    • 10 Commandments : The Reciprocity Of Faithfulness

      $65.00

Offering a host of classic and new essays surveying the scholarly ethical and biblical debate surrounding the Ten Commandments, William Brown organizes his volume into three parts: the history of interpretation, contemporary reflections on the Decalogue as a whole, and contemporary reflections on individual commandments. A useful addition to ethics as well as Old Testament and Hebrew Bible courses, Brown’s The Ten Commandments will be a standard reference for all Decalogue research, as it facilitates a helpful balance between moral, theological, and biblical study.

The Library of Theological Ethics series focuses on what it means to think theologically and ethically. It presents a selection of important and otherwise unavailable texts in easily accessible form. Volumes in this series will enable sustained dialogue with predecessors though reflection on classic works in the field.

    • Grammar And Grace

      $65.00

This book is a collection of new essays on Aquinas and Wittgenstein written by some of the leading theologians and philosophers of religion in the English-speaking world. It is inspired by – and dedicated to the memory of – Victor Preller, whose powerful interpretations of these figures did much to prepare the ground for recent discussions of religious language, knowledge of God, the role of grace in human life, and the ethical significance of virtue. Grammar and Grace frees Aquinas from the trappings of traditional Thomism, just as it liberates Wittgenstein from the relativism of the Wittgensteinian fideists. But the book is no mere exercise in scholarly revisionism, for its main purpose is to advance our understanding of the issues on which texts like the Summa Theologiae and the Philosophical Investigations have a bearing.

This book will be essential reading for all those interested in the interpretation of Aquinas and Wittgenstein, the interface of religion and ethics, and the dialogue between philosophy and theology.

    • Educating For Shalom

      $30.99

In addition to his notable work as a premier Christian philosopher, Nicholas Wolterstorff has become a leading voice on faith-based higher education. This volume gathers the best of Wolterstorff’s essays from the past twenty-five years dealing collectively with the purpose of Christian higher education and the nature of academic learning.

Integrated throughout by the biblical idea of shalom, these nineteen essays present a robust framework for thinking about education that combines a Reformed confessional perspective with a radical social conscience and an increasingly progressivist pedagogy. Wolterstorff develops his ideas in relation to an astonishing variety of thinkers ranging from Calvin, Kuyper, and Jellema to Augustine, Aquinas, and Kant to Weber, Habermas, and MacIntyre. In the process, he critiques various models of education, classic foundationalism, modernization theory, liberal arts, and academic freedom.

    • Anglicans And Orthodox

      $31.25

Elizabeth I deliberately divided her episcopate at the outset of her reign between Geneva reformers and bishops who looked to the Fathers of the Early Church. Thereafter in the Church of England there would always be divines who would be drawn to the Orthodox East. Such men suffered mightily in the 17th century at the hands of the first Puritans and then Whigs when these gained political power, and their suffering impelled them more and more to ‘look to the East.’

This book traces the fortunes of the quest, through the study of Greek texts, involvement in the intricate politics of the Near and Middle East, deprivation and isolation in the Nonjuror schism, and finally the rejection by the Greek Patriarchs of requests for Orthodox Communion in the 1720’s.

How could a conservative Christian, an ordained minister with a beard, no less be against not only Christianity, but theology, sacraments, and ethics as well? Yet that is the stance Peter Leithart takes in this provocative “theological bricolage.”

Seeking to rethink evangelical notions of culture, church, and state, Leithart offers a series of short essays, aphorisms, and parables that challenge the current dichotomies that govern both Christian and non-Christian thinking about church and state, the secular and the religious.

But his argument isn’t limited to being merely “against.” Leithart reveals a much larger vision of Christian society, defined by the stories, symbols, rituals, and rules of a renewed community, the city of God.

This classic work demonstrates how an authentic black theology of liberation today must listen to the divine spirit that once fed and continues to feed the black religious experience. Current scholarship in the study of ancient Christianity is now available to non-specialists through this collection of essays on anti-Judaism in the New Testament and in New Testament interpretation. While academic writing can be obscure and popular writing can be uncritical, this group of experts has striven to write as simple and clearly as possible on topics that have been hotly contested. The essays are arranged around the historical figures and canonical texts that matter most to Christian communities and whose interpretation has fed the negative characterizations of Jews and Judaism. A select annotated bibliography also gives suggestions for further reading. This book should be an excellent resource for academic courses as well as adult study groups.

    • Original Memoirs Of Charles G Finney

      $23.99

The Memoirs of Charles G. Finney, the life record of the great American evangelist of the nineteenth century, became a treasured resource upon its publication in 1876, a year after Finney’s death. But what wasn’t known is that the original editor, Finney’s friend James Harris Fairchild, had edited or omitted what seemed to him outrageous passages, exaggerated language, controversial statements, and repetitions. All subsequent editions had been based on Fairlchild’s work. The discovery of long-forgotten manuscripts a century later led to the publication of “the Complete Restored Text.” This volume, edited by Garth M. Rosell and Richard A. G. Dupuis and published by Zondervan in 1989, made the Memoirs available for the first time in complete form. Portions that had been deleted or changed by Fairchild were restored so as to make Finney’s significant legacy to church history more accurate and more enriching. The 1989 edition included various editorial schemata that have held great value for historians and other scholars. This edition makes the complete Memoirs available to general readers for the first time. Here is the Complete and Restored Text without the editorial schemata and other academic features. This edition enables readers to fully appreciate the firsthand accounts of Charles G. Finney’s remarkable revivals and career in a way never before available. Readers who have treasured the Memoirs for the past century and a quarter now have the complete story in a manageable form for the first time.

    • Wesleyan Tradition : A Paradigm For Renewal

      $33.99

In these important essays, a distinguished group of interpreters of the Wesleyan tradition, identify the central convictions and practices of the Methodist movement. Their purpose in making this identification is twofold. First, they insist that these convictions and practices lie at the heart of what the Wesleyan/Methodist family is, and has been. Second, and more important, they claim that in these distinctive beliefs lies the future of the “people called Methodist.” If renewal and growth in witness and mission is to occur, the authors argue, it will come through a reclamation and reinterpretation of such central beliefs as salvation by grace through faith, the authority of Scripture, disciple-making within community, the vocation of Christian holiness, and the church’s mission to the world.

    • Faith Of 50 Million

      $50.00

Baseball and religion. Though many might say there is no connection, or at the very least wonder what kind of connection there might be, The Faith of Fifty Million will convince you that there is, indeed, a connection, and will help you to understand it better. A collection of essays by religion scholars who are baseball enthusiasts, and longtime fans of our national pastime, The Faith of Fifty Million looks at the cultural, social, and religious aspects of one of the most popular sports of all time.

In nine chapters, or innings as one reviewer called them, The Faith of Fifty Million offers insightful essays probing the good, the bad and the ugly about our national pastime. Topics for the essays include: baseball as civil religion, Shoeless Joe Jackson as baseball’s scapegoat, baseball as a model of racial integration, the kingdom of baseball in America, a spiritual reminiscence of baseball, a comparison of the characters of Christy Mathewson (Matty) and Grover Cleveland Alexander (Ol’ Pete), connections between Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea and baseball, women and baseball, baseball as metaphor, and comparisons between the history of baseball and Christian theology.

Baseball and American culture are intertwined and have been since baseball’s inception. This book argues that the same is true of baseball and religion in America. Stanley Hauerwas, in the foreword notes that as a critic of civil religion in America he must “recognize that baseball, for better or worse, is the great exemplification of that [civil] religion.” And one of the essayists argues that baseball is the outworking of the liberal Protestant hope for the Kingdom of God to be realized in America. In the end, however, this book affirms that whatever the religious and social implications of baseball are, baseball is, ultimately, just a game. A game which reflects and impacts the values of both America and Christianity, but still a game. So step up to the plate and take a swing at The Faith of Fifty Million. You won’t be disappointed, and you certainly won’t strike out.

    • You Dont Look Like A Minister

      $16.18

Here are candid observations and quips from a minister with over 35 years experience. These 36 delightful essays will be instantly recognized by anyone who serves a parish ministry.

      Consider …
You can never hide the fact that you are a clergyman.
Maybe it’s the way we usually sit down front it could be the shameless way we sing hymns as though they were meant to be heard. I’ve gone to church in a sport shirt and pastel slacks and had people say to me, “You don’t look like a minister, but you sure do sing like one.”

Personally, I’ve always thought of heaven as down, like down in the Caribbean in February.

The ad in the church supplies magazine said, “We put the van into evangelical.” It was from a company that sells buses and other vehicles to churches. If you can’t afford a van look what Peter did with only a pair of sandals and a heart of love.

During a sermon, a spider dropped down from the end of the microphone. Ordinarily, I can take spiders, but in the middle of a sermon, I don’t need any more distraction. I get enough sirens, coughers and bookdroppers — and people who sit there grinning and I can’t figure out why.

    • Inside The Small Church

      $50.00

Even as so-called megachurches capture the attention of many church watchers, small congregations continue to dominate America’s religious landscape in both rural and urban settings. Although sometimes obscured by their larger siblings, these small churches play a prominent role and hold a unique place in both local and national cultures. How can leaders help to keep these often at-risk churches alive and to meet their potential for ministry?

Small-church expert Tony Pappas has gathered a cornucopia of essays into an indispensable book for anyone interested in the rich life of these small but significant congregations. Drawing on classic and updated articles by a variety of writers from his own small-church newsletter The Five Stones; from Alban journals Action Information and Congregations; and adding new pieces developed especially for this volume, Pappas provides timeless ideas on learning to value, pastor, develop, and lead the small church.

In addition to time-honored articles by the editor, other contributors to this volume include Sherry and Douglas Alan Walrath, Gary Farley, Lawrence W. Farris, Loren Mead, Caroline Westerhoff, Steven Burt, Carl Dudley, David Ray, James Lowery, and a host of others known for their work-and love-for the small church. Readers of Inside the Small Church will come away with a renewed love and appreciation for these vital congregations as well as with new skills for ministry.

    • Last Letters Of Thomas More A Print On Demand Title

      $25.99

Written from the Tower of London, these letters of Thomas More still speak powerfully today.

In the spring of 1534, Thomas More was taken to the Tower of London, and after fourteen months in prison, the brilliant author of UTOPIA, friend of Erasmus and the humanities, and former Lord Chancellor of England was beheaded on Tower Hill. Yet More wrote some of his best works as a prisoner, including a set of historically and religiously important letters.

The Last Letters of Thomas More is a superb new edition of More’s prison correspondence, introduced and fully annotated for contemporary readers by Alvaro de Silva. Based on the critical edition of More’s correspondence, this volume begins with letters penned by More to Cromwell and Henry VIII in February 1534 and ends with More’s last words to his daughter, Margaret Roper, on the eve of his execution. More writes on a host of topics–prayer and penance, the right use of riches and power, the joys of heaven, psychological depression and suicidal temptations, the moral compromises of those who imprisoned him, and much more.

Valuable to a range of readers, this volume records the clarity of More’s conscience and his readiness to die for the integrity of his religious faith. It also throws light on the literary works that More wrote during the same period and on the religious and political conditions of Tudor England. Gripping reading awaits those who delve into these pages.

    • Mimesis And Intertextuality In Antiquity And Christianity

      $91.58

This riveting and groundbreaking collection of essays, by a distinguished group of scholars, examines the ways in which early Christian writers practiced mimesis–the conscious imitation of literary models from the Greco-Roman world. While the study of intertextuality has deeply influenced the study of the Synoptic Gospels and other early Christian texts, few scholars of early Christian literature have enriched their observations with studies of mimesis. The apocryphal Acts of Andrew, for instance, contains extensive imitation of Homeric and Euripidean poetry, and both Luke-Acts and Mark contain extensive imitaion of the Homeric epics. These essays examine the phenomenon of mimesis and intertextuality through an in-depth examination of particular texts, ranging from the apocryphal book of Tobit to Luke-Acts and the Synoptic Gospel.

    • Finding The Church

      $44.99

Amongst the churches, Anglicanism is distinctive by virtue of its attempt to participate in the life and purposes of God and to make them known through history and in the practicalities of particular situations. Yet the distinctiveness of this position, and what its implications are for the Church’s ongoing life, are not well appreciated. As a result, the churches of the Anglican Communion often find themselves caught in painful struggles about major issues concerning their own basis and practice, to such a degree that there are constant threats of division. The essays in this book begin from the struggles which have emerged in recent years, since the 1998 Lambeth conference, and show the deeper issues at stake. They respond with proposals for the future, focusing especially on the wisdom which manifests itself in the Church, and how this needs to be furthered in the worship, order and practice of the Church in the breadth of its mission in each place. They conclude with some considerations of the wider role of the Church.

      Additional Info
Caring Well provides a fresh approach to problems in medical ethics. It shows how attending closely to the concerns and religious commitments of both patients and professionals enables ethicists to offer wiser critiques of moral issues in the field of health care. Beginning with chapters that work to recover an experience-near method of engaging moral problems from classic twentieth century writing on religion and medicine, the contributors next consider how the practice of care-giving is shaped by the particular commitments they serve, and patients themselves. Then, through on-the-ground accounts of issues attending the donation and transplant of organs, contributors consider how ethicists might help patients, their families, and professionals work through conflicts between commitments. The final chapters offer perspectives on the ways experience-near appraisals of care for the dying can help all parties concerned_health care professionals, patients, their families, and ethicists_to affirm the dignity of the dying and to connect the experience of mortality with what it means to be human.

In 1637 Anne Hutchinson spoke in her own voice declaring that she had received a revelation directly from God. This action led to her excommunication from the Massachesetts Bay Colony because the ordained clergy saw themselves as designated meditators of God’s word to laypeople. But Anne became her own person and a model of womanhood for us over four and one-half centuries later.
Sister Blandina Segale found her own voice when she stopped a lynch mob and kept the Billy the Kid gang from scalping doctors in Colorado in the 1870s.
At the turn of the century, Ida B Wells-Barnett claimed her own voice to expose the evil of lynching propagated against her African American brothers by white persons. Her forthrightness led to the burning of her office and to threats against her life, but she never allowed her voice to be silenced.
Sally Priesand gained her voice to preach and officiate at Jewish religious services when she became the first woman rabbi ordained in the Reform Movement of Judaism in 1972.
Pilulaw Khus, Native American elder of the Chumash tribe, found oil companies to prevent them from desecrating Chumash ceremonial areas in California in the 1980s.

These are only a few of the stories told by women in their own voices in this book. Gender and multiculturalism intersect in every chapter as we share accounts of women trying to gain their full and equal stature as persons before God and their sisters and brothers. In Our Own Voices becomes a metaphor of women’s efforts to speak and act as persons with authority in their own right.

    • Paideia Of God

      $16.66

You can teach your students the Trivium, but if that is all you teach them, then you’re both in trouble. As these essays point out, education must remember the lessons of old without ignoring the demands of now.

In the ancient world, paideia was an all-encompassing education and involved nothing less than the enculturation of the future citizen. Scripture requires Christian fathers to raise their children in “the nurture and admonition (paideia) of the Lord.” However, the boundaries of paideia are much wider than the boundaries of what we understand as education. Wilson elaborates on this, as well as canvassing educational hot topics such as vouchers, uniforms, and college choices.

      $22.00

Creating and participating in art are essential ways of discovering and conveying truths by merging the senses with the imagination. Like lightning bolts across a dark sky, poetry, paintings, parables, and all of the arts can reveal whole new vistas. Like dreams, they can bring forth symbols and stories from the recesses of our psyches. Raising fundamental questions, art takes us deeper into an understanding of ourselves and others, and, just as important, art imprints truths upon our hearts forever through sensual joy.
Kay Snodgrass has brought together a delightful collection of poems and short inspirational essays illustrated with original art and photographs. These devotional readings are arranged thematically in broad categories – creation, growth and community, pain and death, and restoration. Represented here are such well-know writers as Frederick Buechner, John Purdy, Sara Covin Juengst, Kathleen Long Bostrom, and Bard Young. Voice of Many Waters offers helpful material for inspiration, reflection, and growth.

    • Role Of The Bishop

      $30.00

The essays in this book describe, from several perspectives, the role of the bishop in leading the church. The writers, from their global perspective, bear witness to the fact that the role of the bishop is an ever-changing one as bishops work in the world as it is. Rather than focusing on what will be an anachronistic concept of leadership, the writers hold up the evangelical principle that leadership in the church must be subject to the gospel.

This comprehensive study, cosponsored by the Christian College Coalition, addresses questions faced by students in introductory literature courses. It examines literature as a form of human action and argues that the reading and writing of literary works provide vital ways for men and women to act as responsible agents in God’s world.

Building upon the doctrine of Creation, the authors show how the reading of literature helps us to be more effective interpreters of the stories and images we encounter daily. They demonstrate that great works of literature open up a realm of beauty and truth and help us gain an understanding of ourselves, God, and the world.

In twelve thoughtful and provocative essays, the writers ask important questions about the relationship between sacred spaces and the worship that takes place in them:

-How do our buildings convey a vision of God’s kingdom on earth?
-How are our places of worship reflecting our beliefs?
-In what visible, tangible forms are we proclaiming a faith in the living God?

    • Romans And The People Of God A Print On Demand Title

      $33.99

A great deal of scholarly energy of late has been dedicated to the interpretation of Romans.
The intense debate concerning Paul and the law has led some scholars to reevaluate long-held positions with regard to Paul’s great letter, while other scholars are seeking fresh formulations of deep -rooted convictions. In addition, there are ongoing investigations into Paul’s sophisticated use of Old Testament traditions, his mastery of subtle rhetorical devices, his use of Spirit language, and his formulation of missiological principles. Classical themes such as the fatherhood of God and the divine sonship of Jesus are in continual need of refinement, as are the practical implications of the Pauline perspectives for contemporary living and ministry.

All of these topics and others are dealt with in this superb collection of essays on Romans presented to Gordon D. Fee on the occasion of his 65th birthday. The contributors, themselves all New Testament scholars of international standing, come from a wide circle of Gordon’s friends and associates. Their explorations into various exegetical, theological, and pastoral aspects of Romans not only serve as a fitting tribute to Gordon’s own work in New Testament scholarship but also represent the very best studies available in this critical area of biblical research.

That this is a lively collection of essays is entirely appropriate for a very “lively” scholar and lecturer. Formerly of Southern California College, Wheaton College, and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Gordon has served for the last thirteen years as Professor of New Testament at Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia. His worldwide teaching/preaching ministry has taken him from the Philippines to Croatia, from India to Sweden, and many places in between. His many publications, catalogued at the back of this book, speak for themselves.

Never ashamed of his Pentecostal background, Gordon has made a significant mark on biblical scholarship by calling for and demonstrating in his own life the integration of heart and mind, Word and Spirit. The essays included in this symposium are intended both to honor that contribution and to further the kind of scholarship that has motivated the life work of this much loved and respected colleague.

In this collection of talks and essays, he calls us to live for the Sermon s ultimate goal: the overturning of the prevailing order of injustice. In its place, Arnold writes, we must build up a just, peaceable society motivated by love.”

    • Abraham Kuyper A Print On Demand Title

      $43.99

Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) is one of the most remarkable men in the history of Reformed Christianity. He was eminent in Dutch public life for half a century and left a deep imprint on Dutch immigrant communities in the United States, Canada, and South Africa. A theologian, politician, journalist, university founder, and seminal thinker in the history of modern Calvinism, Kuyper offered an engaging critique of the nineteenth century that still has much to say at the end of the twentieth.

This anthology, published in the centennial year of Kuyper’s famous Stone Lectures, gathers sixteen key writings by Kuyper never before available in English. Included in this volume are Kuyper’s definitive statements on politics, education, culture, and the religious currents and social problems of his time. Also included are Kuyper’s own conversion narrative, his critiques of Modernism and of Holiness theology, his proposals on common grace and Calvinist politics, his reflections on a culture in thrall to pantheism and evolution, and his classic address on “sphere sovereignty.”

Freshly translated and rendered in a clear, accessible style, these writings clearly display Kuyper’s wide-ranging and creative Christian mind. Editor James Bratt provides helpful explanatory notes and an introduction to each piece. Photographs, cartoons, and short excerpts from some of Kuyper’s better-known works also make this an attractive volume that will stand as the premier Kuyper reader for years to come.

    • Gospels For All Christians

      $28.99

Not many books on the canonical Gospels are truly groundbreaking, but this one is. The author and his collegues convincingly challenge one of the most deeply rooted assumptions of contemporary scholarship, namely that the Gospels were written out of and for fairly restrictive early communities that enjoyed relatively little contact with the whole church. This book persuasively argues that both in intent and in reality the Gospels were written for “all Christians.”

    • Sewing Room : Uncommon Reflections On Life Love And Work

      $26.95

In these insightful essays, Barbara Cawthorne Crafton reflects on a broad range of experiences ministering among merchant seafarers, the homeless, the bereaved, AIDS patients, and others in need of personal and spiritual help. She shares honestly her own emotions as she grapples with the harsh realities of the world, while delighting in the humor and joy found in everyday living.
Crafton compassionately recounts the unique stories of the men, women, and children she worked with during her service as a port chaplain in New York and New Jersey and as a minister at Trinity Church on Wall Street. In doing so, she weaves together threads of the mundane and the traumatic, the lovely and the ugly, and the down to earth and the holy, creating an original tapestry of the richness of life.

    • For The Nations A Print On Demand Title

      $29.99

These essays in Christian social ethics, some previously published but most appearing in print here for the first time, are all about the way in which the church, in the midst of the world, is called to think and act on behalf of the world.

As the title indicates, this affirmative stance is the opposite of the way John Howard Yoder has often been interpreted under the label of “sectarian.” The church is called to serve as a prophetic model and discerning pioneer, addressing the surrounding society’s concerns about power and righteousness. The examples chosen for interpretation range from the ancient Jewish experience of dispersion as mission to modern examples like Martin Luther King, Jr.

    • Makers Of Christian Theology In America

      $49.99

This important reference work presents critical, analytical, and interpretive essays on more than ninety figures who have been particularly important in shaping and influencing the development of Christian theology in America. The work is organized into four major sections: The Colonial Period (1607-1789); The National Period (1789-1865); The Post Civil War Period (1865-1918); and The Modern Period (1918-1970). Each section has a separate introduction by the editors tracing major theological developments in that historical period. A substantial concluding article by Martin Marty traces theological developments, trends and movements in American theology since 1965.

Each essay includes: (1) basic biographical data regarding the life, career, and major writings of the figure; (2) an analysis of the key theological issues and/or concepts to which the figure responded; (3) a critical discussion of the major theological themes developed in the course of the figure’s career; and (4) an assessment of the immediate influence of the figure’s thought and its significance for subsequent theological developments. Brief bibliographies at the end of each essay point readers to the most important and useful primary and secondary literature for each figure.

“Makers of Christian Theology is a welcome and long-needed addition to reference and textbook possibilities for courses on Religion in North America. . . . It is dramatically more inclusive and even-handed in its selection of figures for an historical orientation to theological developments in North American Christianity than any previous attempt. . . . Both the design of the book and the content of the individual essays reflect the fruit of the best current work on Christian theology in America. I recommend it highly!” –Randy L. Maddox, Professor of Religion and Philosophy

    • Essays In Postfoundationalist Theology A Print On Demand Title

      $38.99

How and why do some of us hang on to religious faith amid the confusion of this postmodern age? How can we speak of the certainty of faith or of passionate commitments and deep convictions in a postmodern context that celebrates cultural and religious pluralism? Can Christian theology ever really claim to join this postmodern conversation without retreating to an esoteric world of private, insular knowledge claims? Finally, how does theological reflection relate to other modes of intellectual inquiry, and especially to scientific knowledge, which very often goes unchallenged as the ultimate paradigm of human rationality in our times?

This collection of essays in philosophical theology boldly addresses many of the challenges faced by Christian theology in the context of contemporary postmodern thought. Through a series of profound discussions of theology in relation to epistemology, methodology, and science, J. Wentzel van Huyssteen presses the case for a “postfoundationalist theology” as a viable third option beyond the extremes of foundationalism and nonfoundationalism.

The essays in Part 1 explore the dynamics involved when a philosophical theologian enters the interdisciplinary conversation with strong personal convictions. In the process, van Huyssteen critically engages with the work of Wolfhart Pennenberg, Nancey Murphy, and Jerome Stone. Part 2 focuses on the need for Christian theology to break out of an insularity that is concerned only with its own contemporary intellectual world. Part 3, which begins in dialogue with Gerd Theissen, turns to some of the important issues in the current theology-and-science dialogue as concrete examples of interdisciplinarity in postfoundationalist theology.

Handling abstract themes in a remarkably clear and concise way, this volume sets forth the convincing argument that only a truly accessible and philosophically credible notion of interdisciplinarity will be able to pave the way for a plausible public theology that can play an important intellectual role in our fragmented contemporary culture.

    • Subversive Spirituality

      $29.99

      25 Chapters

      Additional Info
According to respected pastor, author, and teacher Eugene Peterson, “the Christian life, in one of its main aspects, is a recovery of what was lost in Fall. We happen upon, we notice, we reach out and touch things and ideas, people and events, and among these the Holy Scriptures themselves, that were there all along but that our ego-swollen souls or our sin-blurred eyes quite simply overlooked–sometimes for years and years and years….”

In Submissive Spirituality Peterson has gathered together a host of writings penned over the past twenty-five years that reflect on the overlooked facets of the spiritual life. Comprising occasional pieces, short biblical studies, poetry, pastoral readings, and interviews, this work captures the epiphanies of life with the pleasing pastoral style and inspiring depth of insight for which Peterson is well known.

Freshly phrased and refreshingly honest, these reflections will–as do all of Peterson’s writings–help lead readers into a deeper understanding of the spiritual meaning of the Christian life.

    • Trinity In A Pluralistic Age

      $23.99

This provocative collection of papers from an international array of theologians explores the Christian doctrine of the Trinity in the context of twentieth-century cultural and religious pluralism.

How should Christians think about their faith in relation to other faiths and in relation to culture in general? Can the Trinity fit into a global religion? These essays – originally presented at the Fifth Edinburgh Dogmatic Conference – show how a full-orbed Trinitarian doctrine, with a proper emphasis on both the One and the Three, provides the necessary resources for successfully addressing the problems and the possibilities of contemporary pluralism.

    • Mission On The Way

      $43.75

For the past thirty years mission theology has taken a backseat to mission practice. Recently, however, people of all theological stripes have begun to reexamine the theological presuppositions that underlie the mission enterprise. In Mission on the Way Charles Van Engen masterfully articulates the contours of mission theology.

The result is a complete investigation of evangelical mission theology as it relates to (1) biblical and narrative theology, (2) cultural context, (3) ecclesiology, (4) world councils, (5) religious pluralism, (6) interaction with competing theologies, and (7) the overall task of ministry.

    • Bread For The Journey

      $18.99

When beloved author Henri Nouwen set out to record this daybook of totally new reflections, he suddenly found himself on “a true spiritual adventure.” For in these 366 original, interlocking morsels of daily wisdom, Nouwen provides both sustenance and a trail for us to follow, as he unveils, to his own surprise, his personal map of faith. From the delicate interplay of human experience to the surrender to Christ and the embrace of Christian community, that journey of Christian spirituality is explored and celebrated here in each eloquent, thought-provoking passage,

“The table is one of the most intimate places in our lives. It is there that we give ourselves to one another. When we say, ‘Take some more, let me serve you another plate, let me pour you another glass, don’t be shy, enjoy it,’ we say a lot more than our words express. We invite our friends to become part of our lives. We want them to be nurtured by the same food and drink that nurture us. We desire communion…. Every breakfast, lunch, or dinner can become a time of growing communion with one another.”

Intimately personal and inspiring, Bread for the Journey is a daily feast of fresh insight into the challenges and deep joys of a life lived in close communion with God. Nouwen is a wise, loving companion who invites us along as he finds joy in the community of loss, true freedom in forgiveness of others, and hope in surprising places. Each daily meditation is a stepping-stone along a path of private discovery, offering Nouwen’s seasoned yet fresh ideas on kindness, love, suffering, and prayer, the Church as God’s people, and the importance of Jesus in one’s life-reflecting, as a whole, Nouwen’s own ‘personal creed.’ Bread for the Journey brims with daily nourishment and guidance for devoted followers and new friends alike — food for thought on a yearlong journey of discovery and faith.
