Once Upon A Time
$19.99Add to cart“Stories have always been about us, a mirror in which we can see ourselves-our hopes and dreams, but also our greatest dilemmas.” In Once Upon a Time: A Collection of Short Stories for Those Trying to Find Their Way Home, retired clinical psychologist Samuel L. Blumenthal, Ph.D. illustrates gospel truths on the themes of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration, all of which come into clearer focus through the lens of God’s perfect love.
Sam Blumenthal came to faith in Christ in mid-life, after growing up in a Reform Jewish home in the South. His thirty years as a psychoanalytically-oriented psychologist gives him a unique perspective on the inner workings of the mind and heart. He says, “Since the dawn of man, stories have been pregnant with meaning, much of which has gone unnoticed. But if you are willing to slow down and listen more closely, stories will meet you in the very places you need them and guide you home where you will be healthy and whole.”
He presents stories to touch hearts and remind us of just how much God desires to be present in our lives. These stories offer us courage to look deeper within ourselves to learn why we think and feel as we do, why we struggle as we do, and what can truly help and redeem us and enable us to find our way home.

Summoned
$30.95Add to cartEvery life has a story. Human nature looks for meaning in all circumstances. Our journeys seldom unfold smoothly, but amidst turmoil and tragedy, mind-numbing boredom or maddening frustration, the mind weaves a narrative that tries to make sense of it all.
Kathleen Stauffer’s previous novels have shown how God molds the lifelong spiritual journeys of those who seek him. In this, her sixth book, she zooms in for a closer look at the nitty-gritty of life.
Summoned includes a novelette and six short stories, each of which portrays a unique individual facing unexpected challenges. Despite the sometimes dark subject matter, the characters are painted with such loving details and their stories are so well-surrounded with the context of an eternal viewpoint that the general effect is one of hope. Each protagonist in this book of stories is an affirmation that our stories, too, may be a part of a far-reaching narrative and that our lives can be part of something bigger and beyond our imaginations.

Thieves Of The Sky
$12.99Add to cartWhen I started thinking about my poetry book I decided to write about things that I love and enjoy so much. I feel for poems come out right and enjoyable the poet has to be genuine and true about her feelings and what to write about and word must come from the heart. Also the vocabulary and expressions used must reflect a mastery of the language to choose the most suitable words that will be great match perfect for each situation, that is a skill and a gift that God had blessed me with an I am thankful for that. I have also chosen my subjects and situations based on the simple things in life that people enjoy and find it close to their hearts because I believe that when it comes to poetry the simpler the better. I have also written about a range of topics to make it exciting and give the reader the experience and enjoy different situations and reflections, after all variety is the spice of life. Some of the topics that I picked for my reflections and poems were included animals, nature, cultures and values, and faraway places. I am a huge animal lover and you will feel that throughout this book, I spend a lot of my time looking at them, watching animals and wildlife shows, going to zoos and aquariums. The animal world that shares our planet, there is so much beauty and serenity in connection with nature and learn many lessons in struggle, hard work, and motherhood. However, not everything in the animal kingdom is rosy fairy tales of beautiful fur, colorful feathers, and fluffy cubs, there are also a lot of savagery, blood, and cruel fight for survival. I felt to covey that world as it is just like it takes place in nature in a very unique way that hasn’t been described before that that reader will find interesting and amusing. In “”Thieves of the Sky,”” “”Dracula of the Jungle,”” “”I smell Blood,”” “”Gentle Giants,”” and “”Racing the Wind”” I spoke of the beauty and of heartwarming sights and discipline of these animals, but at the same time I uncovered their schemes and manipulation in stalking their Prays and tearing them apart in cruel and bloody manner as a mean of survival and domination of the strong over the venerable. In a related topic, but also a matter of principle I wanted to make my voice heard to add that to the many calls and protests against the brutality and savagery oh bullfighting in Spain and other places. The torture and sedition that is inflicted on that poor creature is beyond comprehension. I wanted to portray that in an imaginativ

Walk With Me
$12.99Add to cartPerhaps you feel your testimony isn’t worth sharing. Think again. In a world filled with megachurch preachers, complicated theologies, and distortions of the good news of Jesus, what can a down-to-earth faith look like?
“Daddy loved to fish. This particular afternoon found me with him at one of the ponds close to our camp house out in the Walker community just off the Transport Cemetery Road. I was at an age where playing on the sandy bank with a stick was every bit as entertaining as fishing.
Making a little too much noise resulted in a plea to be quiet, but he still kept fishing. I went on playing. The nearby minnows would dart in the shallows right along with dad’s patience when I would stamp my feet. He asked me to stop, and he kept on fishing.
Maybe I took it as a challenge. I’m not sure now what was going through my head, but in a glaring display of the restlessness of a child, I had to slap my foot on that bank one more time. As he started toward me I knew I’d gone too far.
I’d made a number of mistakes that afternoon, what was one more? I ran. Up the hill and away from certain doom I went. Not even halfway up the hill, terror took over when I realized he was right behind me. Like a scene from an educational program where a lion is chasing a baby deer, you knew it was not going to end well, and the narrator was going to be talking about how it was nature’s way. Man, did I feel sorry for that deer…”
Walk With Me is a collection of stories and observations meant to encourage faith, examine your hope, and even laugh.

Since then, the ministry has served 271 patients in crisis from a medical emergency. This book shares their stories and some of the amazing patient transport stories. On a deeper level, it challenges all readers to hear and answer God’s call to love and serve others. “I was most captivated by the stories of the patients helped by the Grace on Wings ministry. Countless times while reading the book, I was reminded of the friends who helped the paralytic go through the roof of a house to be healed by Jesus. Dr. Milstead and his team are the friends in that story.” Rev. Dan McNerney, Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship “I remember well the day Hal presented to me and our senior lender. The deep passion oozed out of him. The love of Jesus and commitment to this ministry was compelling.” Karen Miller, President and CEO, The Farmers Bank “Answering the Call tells the wonderful story of friends who heard God’s call to go beyond the usual, beyond the normal way of life, into an exciting and unique way of serving the Lord and helping people who desperately need help. Jim Milstead shares the challenges, the responses, and the blessings of God as the Grace on Wings team steps forward in faith to do the seemingly impossible. This book is a great read, as it turns our personal thoughts into how we too can answer the call and do the impossible with God’s leading.” Donna Thomas, Christian Vision Ministries For more information or to make a flight request, call 1.877.75.GRACE, find Grace on Wings on Facebook, or visit the ministry website at www.graceonwings.org.

Daddy Is That Story True Or Were You Just Preaching
$16.99Add to cartPopular author James W. Moore recalls how several years ago, while delivering the sermon at his church one Sunday morning, he had told a moving story about a boy and his dog. The author’s then-five-year-old son, Jeff, was fascinated by the story, but feeling a bit uncertain about some of the details of it, during the family’s car ride home from church, Jeff asked his father, “Daddy, is that story true, or were you just preaching?”
Highly amused by Jeff’s question, Jim Moore went on to explain to his young son that there are two kinds of stories: TRUE stories, stories that happened factually in history; and TRUTH stories, stories like Jesus’ parables, which are shared to underscore a dramatic truth in life.
The several short chapters and stories in this book are designed to highlight such life-truths, with chapter titles such as “Go out Singing,” “Roadblocks,” “Should I Forgive?” “One Step at a Time,” “Who’s in Control Here?” “What Can One Person Do?” “Tell Me, Please, How to Be Happy,” “Why not You?” “Keep on Keeping On,” “Jesus: The Message and the Messenger,” “The Importance of Uniqueness,” and others.
This book contains a discussion guide.

Devil And Pierre Gernet
$28.99Add to cartDavid Bentley Hart – author of The Beauty of the Infinite and The Doors of the Sea – turns his theological imagination to narrative fiction in this collection of four short stories and one novella. Anticipating questions about his shift in genre, Hart writes that “God is no more likely (and a good deal less likely) to be found in theology than in poetry and fiction.” Far from simple allegory, however, these stories beguile and entrance the reader because of Hart’s engrossing, opulent writing style and the deep theological and philosophical questions he raises. Occasionally flabbergasting, often bedazzling, sometimes heartbreaking, and ultimately mesmerizing, these stories are wide ranging in context and scope but united by a common thread of haunting religious and philosophical questions about this life and the next. This powerful collection will engage both the mind and the heart.

Moving the Rock portrays several generations of African American women whose families migrated from the South to the Pacific Northwest in the 1940s and 1950s. As members of a small storefront church in central Seattle, these women-grandmothers, mothers, daughters-lean on their faith and church to face the challenges of poverty, racism, ignorance, and health. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, it is painfully obvious that many of us know little about what it is like to be poor and Black in the United States. These powerful, profound stories bring this group of women and their problems (and joys) vividly and movingly to life. -

Guitar And A Pen
$36.00Add to cartNothing tells a story better than the story-songs of country music. A GUITAR AND A PEN presents, for the first time, the literary work of some of the best storytellers in the world: the songwriters who cut and polish tales down to sparkling three-minute gems. A blend of humor and poignancy, these tales range from Kris Kristofferson’s charming tale of how an explicit natural rock formation causes chaos in a small farming town, to the domestic drama of a Kentucky family with six daughters, to Charlie Daniels’ character-driven fable of money and unhappiness, to Gary Nicholson’s riveting tale of an albino African American singer/songwriter who inspired him to be a musician.

Tales And Prayers For New Life In Christ
$15.95Add to cartWhat is a story? Is it simple communication, a way to relay information about an event? Is there more to a story than that? In fact, stories are powerful. They not only inspire our imagination, but they also serve as a connection with our past, preserving core events in our history. Stories can create a feeling of community, bonding people together in a common history. They reveal truths to us that would otherwise remain hidden. Sometimes we cannot grasp a notion until it is revealed in a story. From the story of our birth to our newspaper obituary, stories are the fabric of our lives.
It is no wonder that Jesus taught us using parables, defined in the introduction as “simple translations of the unfathomable word of God into human language.” Like other stories in our lives, Jesus’ parables offer humanity hope and enlightenment. Consequently, stories have pervaded our worship of God, the master storyteller. Through sermons, prayers, and hymns, the grand tale of God’s relationship with humanity is retold every Sunday.
It is in this spirit that Tales and Prayers for New Life in Christ is given. Each story, complete with a synopsis, a link to the liturgical calendar, and a corresponding scripture, offers us a glimpse into the mystery of life and faith. These stories, including “Angie,” “Bullpen Mud,” and “A Vision of Peace,” can be used in sermons, small group discussions, or even as a complement to personal prayer and reflection. It is suitable for congregations, families, friends, and individuals. Let each tale lay down the foundation on which you create a story of your own.

Shining Moments : Visions Of The Holy In Ordinary Lives
$19.95Add to cartThe Bible is filled with stories of shining moments — Moses’ face shone as he came down from the mountain with the ten commandments; Jesus’ face changed and his clothes became dazzling white in a transfiguration witnessed by the disciples; Paul was blinded by a light and heard the voice of Christ on the road to Damascus — and many modern Christians have had equally life-changing experiences of the Lord’s power and presence.
In this third volume of the acclaimed Visions series, 60 contributors share their authentic, intensely personal accounts of holy experiences. Rosmarie Trapp of the Sound of Music family tells of a moment of assurance when “the Lord visited me in a bright, golden light” whose “golden glow brought peace to my soul.” Ralph Milton, author of the historical novel Julian’s Cell, describes a visitation by his late sister: “We were singing together as we often did as children … I don’t recall ever having a memory or dream as clear and powerful as that one, and it left me with a sense of joy and peace.” Karen Steinke recounts the warmth she felt at the moment of her baptism: “I looked up to see the form of Jesus with an overpowering light surrounding him …”
Whether they relate transforming moments like visions, healings, or visitations by angels, joyous moments like being in the presence of a loved one who has died, or just the simple sense of God’s presence while singing in church or sitting in a sunny meadow on a warm spring day, the vignettes in Shining Moments are a testament to the indescribable comfort and peace of an encounter with the divine. And because each story also illustrates a scripture passage, Shining Moments is a valuable preaching resource and an excellent catalyst for small group discussion. But even more, this book provides inspiring and heart-warming reading for personal devotion and spiritual growth.

Rescuing The Raggedy Man
$15.49Add to cartHope for the Hurting Think of the term “homeless person,” and you’ll see him: the raggedy man. Reeking of alcohol and cigarette smoke. Hasn’t showered in weeks. Tattered old coat. Staggering down the sidewalk, clutching a bottle of cheap whiskey. Or maybe you see her. Mismatched clothes that others would have used for rags. Stringy, unwashed hair sticking out from under a dirty, knit stocking cap. Three kids, somewhere, from three different fathers. For more than four decades, in the name of Jesus Christ, the Rockford Rescue Mission has served compassion and generosity to raggedy people. Some look the part. But many more look like people you’d see every day. They’ve simply messed up, and life has unraveled. Hurting, hopeless, raggedy people walk among us-we just don’t see past their masks. They’re in our neighborhoods, our workplaces, and our churches. There even may be one in your mirror. If there’s a common theme to the many stories you’re about to read, it’s this: For all who hurt, there is great news. God is in the rescue business. He changes lives and gives hope where all seemed hopeless, even for raggedy people like us.

Ragman : And Other Cries Of Faith (Expanded)
$12.99Add to cartFirst published in 1984, and now newly revised and expanded, Ragman and Other Cries of Faith helped to establish Wangerin’s reputation as one of the most cutting-edge Christian writers on the market. It presents thirty-four interlocking “stories” in a variety of styles, ranging from gently reflective to incantatory. Together they embody a “story theology” that explores in fresh, powerful ways the meaning of faith, the persons of Christ, the community of faith, and the individual servant of faith. This collection interweaves short fiction, biblical stories, parables, autobiographical essays, prayers, meditations, poetry, drama, fable, and legend. The opening chapter, “Ragman” (still one of Wangerin’s most quoted writings), is a moving parable about Jesus encountered in a most unexpected place—as a rag seller on the streets of a modern city. For this new edition, the author has provided eleven new pieces, making this an all-new, updated definitive edition.

Bearer Of Divine Revelation
$23.99Add to cartWith a spare eloquence reminiscent of Hemingway and an insistence on divine grace even in the darkest circumstances, Lawrence Dorr writes short stories as powerful as they are profound.
The fifteen new and selected stories here, stylistically and substantively rich, follow a central character through episodes reflecting Dorr’s own eventful life: his childhood in Hungary; wartime experiences on the Russian front; hardship and poverty; the death of family and friends. With a subtle depth of feeling and a clear, mature voice, Dorr writes of refugees and survivors, and of the social, cultural, and religious chasms that separate them. The book’s title story, as an example, follows Dorr’s protagonist through Salzburg, Austria, as he struggles to survive both physically and spiritually in the aftermath of World War II.
Each of these stories has its own plot, but the book as a whole offers a subtle yet powerful story line that underscores the protagonist’s deepening sense of life’s meaning and grace. Dorr’s literary odyssey is a pilgrim’s progress: from trials and anguish come hard-won understanding and hope. While war and pain bring loss of friends, of family, of faith, of God slowly a new life, a new faith, and a new love emerge, and with them a deep peace.
As gripping to read as it is moving, “A Bearer of Divine Revelation” will speak to readers at every stage and station in life.

Faith Of 50 Million
$50.00Add to cartBaseball and religion. Though many might say there is no connection, or at the very least wonder what kind of connection there might be, The Faith of Fifty Million will convince you that there is, indeed, a connection, and will help you to understand it better. A collection of essays by religion scholars who are baseball enthusiasts, and longtime fans of our national pastime, The Faith of Fifty Million looks at the cultural, social, and religious aspects of one of the most popular sports of all time.
In nine chapters, or innings as one reviewer called them, The Faith of Fifty Million offers insightful essays probing the good, the bad and the ugly about our national pastime. Topics for the essays include: baseball as civil religion, Shoeless Joe Jackson as baseball’s scapegoat, baseball as a model of racial integration, the kingdom of baseball in America, a spiritual reminiscence of baseball, a comparison of the characters of Christy Mathewson (Matty) and Grover Cleveland Alexander (Ol’ Pete), connections between Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea and baseball, women and baseball, baseball as metaphor, and comparisons between the history of baseball and Christian theology.
Baseball and American culture are intertwined and have been since baseball’s inception. This book argues that the same is true of baseball and religion in America. Stanley Hauerwas, in the foreword notes that as a critic of civil religion in America he must “recognize that baseball, for better or worse, is the great exemplification of that [civil] religion.” And one of the essayists argues that baseball is the outworking of the liberal Protestant hope for the Kingdom of God to be realized in America. In the end, however, this book affirms that whatever the religious and social implications of baseball are, baseball is, ultimately, just a game. A game which reflects and impacts the values of both America and Christianity, but still a game. So step up to the plate and take a swing at The Faith of Fifty Million. You won’t be disappointed, and you certainly won’t strike out.

Pilgrim Souls : A Collection Of Spiritual Autobiography
$33.95Add to cartWhat is the source of personal writing? When do we begin to consider our own lives worthy of a story? These powerful and passionate selections of spiritual autobiography do not merely represent a vital literary tradition; they bring together fifty-eight writers whose search for truth and understanding has spanned over two millennia and several continents.
From Saint Augustine and Rabi’a to T. S. Eliot and Kathleen Norris, each of these autobiographers tells the story of the inner life as a spiritual quest. Although separated culturally, historically, and linguistically, they are united by their efforts to respond to Socrates’ challenge to “know thyself.” In four parts this insightful collection includes works by:
* Wanderers and seekers, like Leo Tolstoy and Thomas Merton, who feverishly explore many experiences and world views
* Pilgrims and missionaries, like Anne Bradstreet and David Livingstone, who unwaveringly pursue God and holiness in lives of self-sacrifice
* Mystics and visionaries, like Julian of Norwich and Annie Dillard, who discover the ecstasy of epiphany in a life of contemplation and seclusion
* Scholars and philosophers, like Simone Weil and Blaise Pascal, who seek to ground spiritual conviction in a rational certitude.Strong, deep, and enduring, the selections in this illuminating anthology remind us that “the unexamined life is not worth living” and speak to us with an immediacy that transcends time and space.

My Souls Been Anchored
$19.99Add to cartRev. Beecher Hicks Jr. knows that great preaching and great storytelling go hand in hand. He believes in the power of imagination to teach us about God and about life, and he knows that nothing can spark the imagination like a story well told. In My Soul’s Been Anchored, he presents vivid portrayals of the biblical truth shining through people he has known and experiences he has had.
Family, friends, church members, neighbors. . .well-loved faces peer from these pages. In their warm humanity they illustrate simple, profound lessons that touch us all. You’ll meet “Uncle Mugga,” a woman poor in money but rich in love for neighborhood children. Reverend Jones, whose dentures flew out over the pupil in mid-prayer. Mother Jackson, everybody’s mother at Second Baptist Church. Wilson McCray, who ran his shoes off praising God. Each person is a unique, creative snapshot — sometimes funny, sometimes poignant — of a living faith that helps us overcome obstacles, love God and each other more effectively, and make this world a better place.
Dr. Hicks’ stories read the way his sermons preach — full of life, feeling, and beauty. My Soul’s Been Anchored captures in print the oral tradition of the great African-American preachers — the cadences, the rhythms, the passion, the urgency. And the vision. Dr. Hicks says, “This is a time to rise above our limitations and set our sights on those things that the world believes are beyond us.” He encourages us to reach for purpose, to put our faith in motion, to never give up on our potential or God’s promises. Here is storytelling at its finest from a gifted writer and preacher, with universal truths that speak to every culture.
