    • Teaching Minister

      $28.00

The authors says the clergy, regardless of their appointment (as parish clergy or judicatory executives, for example), should understand themselves primary as teachers of the Christian faith. They claim it is both wrong and disadvantageous to mainline churches when clergy act as administrators or psychotherapists or in any other way that is fundamentally different from acting as a teacher. The first half of the book shows the urgency of recovering the understanding of ministry and demonstrates that the church has always witnessed to the importance of teaching as an indispensable component of ministry and of the life of faith itself. The latter half of the book provides examples of how the primary role of teaching can be used in the church.

    • Gods Power : Traditional Understandings And Contemporary Challenges

      $40.00

With this book, Anna Case-Winters provides a reconstruction of the doctrine of God based on process theology and feminist thought. She takes a fresh approach to the problem of theodicy (the justification of God’s goodness and omnipotence in view of the existence of evil) and contends that traditional attempts to address this problem are unsuccessful because they do not discuss the meaning of omnipotence. Once the dispute is recast, it is not a question of how much power is attributed to God, but what kind. Case-Winters provides a coherent and theologically viable doctrine of omnipotence that avoids the pitfalls of traditional beliefs.

    • Gods People In Gods Land

      $32.99

In recent sociological approaches to the Old Testament, Christians have been finding unexpected resources for their ethical reflection and action relative to the modern world’s pressing social and economic dilemmas.

This unique survey by Christopher Wright examines life in Old Testament Israel from an ethical perspective by considering how the economic facts of Israel’s social structure were related to the people’s religious beliefs. Observing the centrality of the family in social, economic and religious spheres of Israelite life, Wright analyzes Israel’s theology of land, the rights and responsibilities of property owners, and the socioeconomic and legal status of dependent persons in ancient Israel – wives, children, and slaves – showing the mutual interaction between such laws, institutions, and customs and the nation’s covenant relationship with God.

While primarily exegetical, God’s People in God’s Land contains many useful insights for Christian social ethics: Wright suggests how the ethical application of his findings might proceed as Christians with different theological perspectives and cultural contexts seek to work out the relevance of the Old Testament for today.

    • God Does Not Foreclose

      $26.99

David Lowes Watson wants to remove a major blockage in the church–the self-centered pursuit of spiritual amphetamines–by acknowledging the responsibilities of universal salvation and the demands placed upon faithful discipleship:

How can Christians effectively hold the tension between the gospel and the seductions of the world?
How can we be committed to the church in a way that guards against thoughtless or self-centered discipleship?
How can we be committed to discipleship in a way that guards against theological procrastination?
David Lowes Watson demonstrates through careful biblical exegesis that all persons are the benefactors of divine grace, but that persons known as Christians are called to a disciplined discipleship. When identifying the role of the clergy and laity as facilitators of these disciplined leaders, Watson explains why no person has the right to declare who is inside or outside of God’s universal love.

    • Call To Personhood

      $70.66

“What is a person?” Although the answer is given in largely theoretical terms, the primary concern of this book is to identify the personal, social and political practices required to live as a human in community with others. Christian trinitarian theology is accordingly interwoven with contemporary social thought to provide an account of individuality and of the various dimensions of personal existence (the psychological, the interpersonal, the material, the institutional, the political, the spiritual) in terms of communication. The basic theme of this book is that we become the people we are as our identities are shaped through the patterns of relation, communication and exchange that surround and incorporate us.

    • Theology Of Peace

      $35.00

This gift from one of the greatest twentieth-century Protestant theologians, Paul Tillich, is a collection of hopeful, realistic writings on peace from the years Tillich spent in America. Beginning in 1937, the book documents Tillich’s pre-World War II hope and resistance to Hilter and moves to the time before his death in 1965, when Tillich preached frequently on hope. It includes the first public political speech in America, on anti-Semitism, essays on planning for peace, and criticism of the peace thought of John Foster Dulles and Pope John XXII. The essays on nuclear weapons and German boundary questions illustrate the continuing timeliness of Tillich’s thought.

    • New Testament Theology

      $35.70

This work is not a history of New Testament times, nor an account of New Testament religion. Nor does it proceed from a view that the New Testament was written as theology. We must bear in mind that the writers of the New Testament books were not writing set theological pieces. They were concerned with the needs of the churches for which they wrote. Those churches already had the Old Testament, but these new writings became in time the most significant part of the Scriptures of the believing community. As such, they should be studied in their own right, and these questions should be asked: What do these writings mean? What is the theology they express or imply? What is of permanent validity in them? We read these writings across a barrier of many centuries and from a standpoint of a very different culture. We make every effort to allow for this, but we never succeed perfectly. In this book I am trying hard to find out what the New Testament authors meant, and this not as an academic exercise, but as the necessary prelude to our understanding of what their writings mean for us today. — From the Introduction.

    • General Introduction To The Bible

      $22.99

There are two strands woven together in the history of the Bible and its translations. One is the development of the biblical text: its materials, texts, and translations. The second is the story of the men and women who went to great extremes, at times risking death, in order to provide their generation with the Word of God in a language that could be understood. David Ewert skillfully combines both these elements in this informative and captivating book, beginning with what “Bible” means, how the Bible is organized, and how various books were named. He explores such other matters as the development of the biblical languages, the canon and the history of the testaments, and early versions of the Bible. English translations, from the time of Wycliffe to the present, are the focus of several chapters. A General Introduction to the Bible is filled with photographs of ancient texts, pages from various Bibles, photographs of key individuals and settings — all of which add understanding to the Bible’s history. Maps and charts show the development of languages, textual families, and the relationship of various translations and revisions. There are suggested readings and an extensive glossary and index.

This book compares the addresses in the Books of Chronicles with similar material in the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah and in the post-exilic prophets. Dr. Mason contends that there are many features of style, theme, and purpose in these latter books that closely echo features found in the addresses. The striking parallels suggest that the later material has been influenced by homiletical style and preaching practice in the second temple period. Mason shows how the careful reinterpretation of tradition kept faith alive for the post-exilic community in the most challenging circumstances.

      Additional Info
This book posits two pillars as the foundations of Paul’s thought: 1) the interaction between coherence and contingency in Paul’s interpretation of the gospel and 2) the apocalyptic character of his gospel. The author ventures to demonstrate how Paul’s interpretation of the gospel as coherent is integral with Paul’s communication of the gospel as situationally contingent. These ostensibly opposing perspectives actually combine to form a fluid Pauline hermeneutic. The centrality of Christological apocalyptic in Paul’s interpretation is posited and involves a radical shift in traditional conceptions of Paul’s theology. The author is “recasting Paul’s theology as a theocentric theology of hope rather than as a Christocentric salvation-history (O. Cullmann) or as an existentialist theology of the cross (R. Bultmann). A theology of hope views the present as the dawn of the future and the future as the full actualization of the present.” Examining the implications of this approach-the ultimacy of God’s sovereignty and triumph beside the Christ- event, the formation of a “biblical- theology,” a rethinking of traditional concepts of salvation and ethics-the author intends to reveal a fresh and most enlightening view of Paul’s theology.

      About The Author

      Additional Info
For thirty years a confirmed pretribulationist, he now believes that the Church will have to endure the persecution of the Antichrist: “God never promised Hs children immunity from the trials of this godless world or the assault of the Antichrist. He did promise, ‘greater is he [the Holy Spirit] that is in you, than he that is in the world’ (1 John 4:4). ” In view of the fact that Christians will not escape all of the oppression of the “Tribulation” period, Rosenthal urges godly living in light of a clear understanding of the last days so that we will be prepared for Satan’s intense opposition. Rosenthal does, however, believe that the Church win escape the wrath of God, which will be poured out beginning with the opening of Revelation’s seventh seal sometime during the second half of the “Tribulation” period. “For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thess. 5:9).

    • Interpreting The Minor Prophets

      $24.99

Because of language, cultural, time, and geographical barriers interpreting the minor prophets has at times frustrated and even defied Old Testament scholars. In response to this frustration, Robert Chisholm has written this volume. Interpreting the Minor Prophets surveys the structure, message, and theological themes of each of the twelve minor prophets. But the author does not stop with a mere survey. As Ryken and others have demonstrated, literary approaches are sweeping into the arena of biblical studies and, according to Chisholm, this way of studying the Bible is long overdue and most welcome. Therefore, he emphasizes the literary and rhetorical aspects of each prophets’ message as the key to understanding the prophetic books. Interpreting the Minor Prophets is an ideal text or resource for anyone seeking thorough information on any or all of the minor prophets.

Long after the books initial publication in Chinese our brother once was heard to express the thought that it should not be reprinted because, it being such a “perfect” treatment of its subject, he was fearful lest the book become to its readers merely a manual of principles and not a guide to experience as well. But in view of the urgent need among the children of God today for help on spiritual life and warfare, and knowing our brother as one who is always open to God’s way and most desirous to serve His people with all that God has given him, we conclude that he would doubtless permit it to be circulated in English. Hence this translation.

Translations used. The Revised Standard Version (RSV) of the Bible has been used throughout the text unless otherwise indicated. Additional translations where employed are denoted by the following abbreviations-.
      Amplified-Amplified Old Testament
      ASV-American Standard Version (1901)
      AV-Authorized Version (King James)
Darby-J. N. Darby, The Holy Scriptures.. a New Translation
      Young’s-Young’s Literal Translation

Soulical and Soulish. The adjectives “soulical” and “soulish” have been used to convey distinctly different meanings. “Soulical” as herein employed pertains to those proper, appropriate, legitimate, or natural qualities, functions, or expressions of man’s soul which the Creator intended from the very beginning for the soul uniquely to possess and manifest. “Soulish” appears in these pages to describe that man in toto who is so governed by the soulical part of his being that his whole life takes on the character and expression of the soul.

    • 1-2 Samuel : A Bible Commentary For Teaching And Preaching

      $56.00

The books of Samuel are so packed with good stories, one right after another, that their theological significance is easy to overlook. In this new Interpretation volume, Brueggemann uses literary analysis to show how the writer of Samuel describes God’s actions in human history. He is not so much interested in how the books of Samuel were put together, as in how they communicate God’s care to his people. Preachers and teachers will find this ”big picture” especially helpful. Hardcover from John Knox, 420 pages.

    • Pastor : Readings From The Patristic Period

      $43.33

Patristic theology is primarily pastoral. Yet often the study of writings from the first six centuries of the church is pursued in ways that make the polemical, philosophical, and political aspects stand out. But if one reads around those texts that are profiled in these ways, the pastoral concerns will emerge. Even contemporary interests in social, economic, and deconstructionist approaches locate much of the data for their questions within or near texts that also can be looked at for the descriptions of shepherding the flock. Thus it is likely that any who read ancient Christian literature will find this volume helpful. The introduction is masterful. No other volume known to me does that so well through the translated words of ancient leaders. Whatever historical surveys one finds helpful, they cannot replace this guide. It is done with such competence and flair that specialists who are historians with no particular interest in ministry other than its being a feature of the early church will need to consult it. Those, however, who as believers and ministers are attempting to serve contemporary congregations will devour this book. No seminarian should be without it

    • Oh The Places Youll Go

      $18.99

Illus. in full color. “Don’t be fooled by the title of this seriocomic ode to success; it’s not ‘Climb Every Mountain,’ kid version. All journeys face perils, whether from indecision, from loneliness, or worst of all, from too much waiting. Seuss’ familiar pajama-clad hero is up to the challenge, and his odyssey is captured vividly in busy two-page spreads evoking both the good times (grinning purple elephants, floating golden castles) and the bad (deep blue wells of confusion). Seuss’ message is simple but never sappy: life may be a ‘Great Balancing Act,’ but through it all ‘There’s fun to be done.'”

    • Saving Life Of Christ

      $17.99

Says Dr. V. Raymond Edman in his introduction, “Some Christians learn that the Lord can make life an adventure. Major Ian Thomas of England is one of them. The major is every inch a soldier. With his infantry battalion he served in the British Expeditionary forces in Belgium at the outset of World War II, and took part in the evacuation at Dunkirk. Often in combat he found the Lord Jesus to be his complete sufficiency. The major is likewise a soldier of the cross, faithful to the Captain of our salvation. He has found life an adventure with God and for Him, a pageant of triumph in Christ.”
