    • Find A Niche And Scratch It

      $37.14

Jesus was uniquely adept in the art of “reading” people. He fit his approach to the precise needs and interests of the person with whom he was dealing, and he spoke the cultural language of that individual. In this book, Robert Perry takes what Jesus and others have done intuitively-niche marketing-and provides a framework for applying those principles in everyday practice.

Convinced that congregations can learn from the wisdom of secular disciplines and apply that wisdom to congregational life without damaging the integrity of the Christian faith, Perry offers a detailed process for using sound marketing principles to identify a congregation’s strengths and the needs of its community, and to develop strategies for effective ministry.

Perry’s plan: to create a common vocabulary that will bridge the communication gap between the disciplines of business marketing and congregational outreach strategizing. The key: to keep in mind the reason we are working to reach people-not to make money for shareholders, but to share the Good News that God loves us. The goal: to foster genuinely healthy, growing congregations! Foreword by Robert D. Dale.

Here is a superb example of the new way of doing theology. C. S. Song tells a charming story of long ago and then proceeds to draw some not-so-charming implications for what it means in our time. The ‘safe’ tale turns out to have devastating impact on what we thought was our own secure world. Scripture, tears, prophetic insight, social analysis, politics, hope — all of them are incorporated in this deceptively small package. –

    • Writing : A Way To Pray

      $19.93

In Writing — A Way to Pray Arnold Cheyney offers a practical method of writing as an act of prayer. He shows how to pray with more meaning, thought, and imagination by writing with Scripture as our focus. This method differs from other kinds of prayer forms because it allows one to organize thoughts and highlight ideas that would otherwise remain unexplored. The concept of praying through writing, based on the Ignatian tradition of exploring images to bring God into personal focus, involves reading Scripture, writing Scripture, and praying Scripture concurrently.

By writing reflections on Scripture, a connection is formed between God’s word and its relevance to our lives. We are better able to understand Jesus’ thoughts, comprehend the meaning of Scripture, and focus on the message of God. Cheyney offers several ways to apply writing to prayer for example, writing stories, letters, poems, or scripts. A section at the end of the book contains practical applications of the methods discussed in the text.

    • Light Of The Mind

      $18.68

St. Augustine is not only the bridge that links ancient philosophy and early Christian theology with the thought of the Middle Ages, but one who, in his philosophy and especially in his epistemology, anticipated some of the most important ideas of Descartes and Malbranche, Berkeley and Kant. In this study of the central aspect of St. Augustine’s thought, the author analyzes the various facets of his theory of knowledge and offers a new interpretation of his idea of divine illumination.

St. Augustine’s views on skepticism and truth, on faith and reason, and on sense perception and cogitation are first examined in order to show their relation to this theory of divine illumination as the ultimate source of truth for man. The proper understanding of the theory of illumination, of how man apprehends the divine ideas, is the most difficult problem in St. Augustine’s epistemology, for he did not formulate any systematic theory of knowledge. Any account of the Augustinian epistemology, Mr. Nash believes, must resolve three paradoxes: how the intellect is both passive and active; how the forms are distinct from – and not distinct from – the human mind; and how man’s mind is and is not the light that makes knowledge possible.

In explaining the nature of divine illumination, Nash discusses four interpretations that have been advanced; the Thomist (which he rejects as not faithful to St. Augustine’s general philosophy), the Franciscan, the Formalist, and the Ontologist. He argues here for a modified Ontologist view. In his synthesis of Christian theology and Neoplatonic philosophy, St. Augustine held that all creation partakes of truth in varying degrees, that man as the highest part of creation, created in God’s image and thus sharing to some degree the divine nature, is able to know truth through the divine light and the light of his own mind. In attempting to find an answer to the perennial problem of knowledge, St. Augustine, Nash suggests, was struggling to find a theory that would combine the benefits of conceptualism and realism, and his answer was more modern than many have given him credit for.

    • Gregory Of Nazianzus

      $20.00

This study on the life and thought of St. Gregory of Nazianzus was written by feminist theologian and Patristic scholar, Rosemary Radford Ruether, as her doctoral dissertation and originally published by Oxford University Press in 1969. The focus of the study is the tension and conflict in the life of Gregory of Nazianzus and his contemporary Christian companions, such as Basil the Great and Gregory Nyssa, between rhetoric and philosophy.

This is a conflict that has deep roots in Greek culture, going back to the time of Isocrates and Plato. It reflects two major streams of Greek culture, the literary tradition of classical education and public argumentation, with its often specious use of language, and the philosophical search for truth which saw itself as culminating in spiritual communion with the Good, the True and the Beautiful. In the Christian context of the fourth century A.D. this conflict had been translated into a tension between classical literary education, which still shaped the socialization of Christian leaders such as Gregory and informed the patterns of their preaching, and their search for contemplative union with God. Gregory and others spoke of the ascetic life of emerging Christian monasticism as “the philosophical life,” thus incorporating this tension between rhetoric and philosophy into their own lives.

For Gregory and other Christian leader of his time, Christians should renounce worldly ambition and even Christian positions of power, such as episcopacy, to pursue the separated life of monastic discipline, yet even in this ascetic retirement they found it difficult not to continue to employ the much-loved literary culture of their youthful education. This book shows how this tension played out in Gregory’s own life, including his relation with his friend and school companion, Basil the Great, who shared the quest for the monastic life with Gregory, but later became a bishop and sought to secure his power against church rivals by forcing episcopacy upon both Gregory Nazianzus and his own brother, Gregory Nyssa.

The volume also studies the way in which Gregory of Nazianzus employs rhetorical conventions to shape his own literary style in his sermons and treatises. It then focuses on the anthropology and cosmology that underlay Gregory’s understanding of the “philosophical life” as a journey of communion with God. In the final chapter it reviews Gregory’s own struggles to find a modus vivendi between the two cultures of clas

      $40.00

In this book, Thomas Ogletree seeks to establish common ground between biblical understandings and contemporary ethical inquiry. Drawing upon phenomenological investigations, he criticizes and modifies some of the most prominent conceptions of ethics, and moves toward a more coherent and comprehensive ethical theory. Guided by this theory, he critically engages selected biblical treatments of the moral life, placing special emphasis on biblical accounts of eschatology in its import for the ordered life of emerging Christian communities.

Vestments-the robes, stoles or other items worn by clergy, or cloths used at the altar-not only add beauty to a worship service, but are visual clues to the liturgical season and to the tone of a particular service. The most beautiful and meaningful vestments are often those made for a particular priest, serving in a specific sanctuary. But many shy away from trying to sew vestments, which seem too complicated and difficult to make.

In Vestments for all Seasons, Barbara Baumgarten demystifies the making of vestments-from designing and fitting patterns, to fabric and color selection, to putting on the finishing touches. She provides patterns and directions for producing special vestments for Advent and Lent, Easter, and Pentecost, and general instructions for designing and making vestments completely from scratch. A history of the development of vestments from Roman times to the present is included, as well as a full glossary describing the various vestments worn by clergy.

Not only is Scobie’s attempt to bridge the biblical testaments admirable, but he also takes great care to present scholarship that is at the same time informed by, and relevant to, the daily life and work of the church. The result is a book that is relevant to readers everywhere.

Accessible to teachers, clergy, students, and general readers alike, this book will reinvigorate the study of the Bible as the unified word of God.

As we enter a new millennium, there is a growing vacuum of leadership among the younger generation. This is the rallying call Paul Borthwick puts forth in Leading The Way. He asserts that leadership is not just reserved for those with the right education, abilities, status or background. Rather, God is calling all young Christians who have the vision and responsibility to persevere, to fill this growing leadership vacuum.

    • Calling : The Seven Days Of Religious Tolerance

      $18.73

The characters in this book find themselves in a fight with Satan for the creation of a one-world religion. We are quickly approaching the rapture of the Church. Time is running out to make a difference. I feel it is an important piece because it says a lot of things that the Christian community today needs to say, but is unwilling or afraid to say. We will continue to lose our religious freedoms in this country if we continue to do nothing. Right now, the only ones speaking are special interest groups. I think most Christians today feel Jesus will be coming back soon; He’ll take care of everything. While we’re waiting, our God-given rights are being pushed under the legislative carpet. Reform goes to the loudest voice. What was “one nation under God” is quickly drying up in our unwillingness to stand up and say, “NO MORE.” What sets this book apart from other angel-type books is that the angelic character here is mostly interested in teaching the Word of God. His devotion to duty and his desire to tell of the things of God are paramount in his existence. All kinds of different emotions will be brought to bear as you read, THE CALLING: SEVEN DAYS OF RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE. May God be praised. -Frank Deming

“The idea of the desert as being a place where we escape the pressures of everyday life in order to hear God speak afresh is intimately associated with Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness – our model for keeping Lent today. It is easy to gain a romantic idea of desert sands beneath starlit skies, but in reality the desert is a hard palce tat tests our endurance and few venture there, geographically or emotionally. Reflecting on the work of writers such as Salman Rushdie and R.S Thomas, and bands such as the “”Manic Street Preachers””, Leslie Griffiths explores the deserts in today’s world and teaches us to hear the voices of these unlikely prophets who tell the truth about the human condition and challenge us to change.”

A number of years ago, John Clayton, a second-generation atheist and respected scientist and teacher, set out to disprove the Bible from a scientific point of view. Instead, his six-year study brought him to a profound faith in the God of the Bible.
Now, in this highly informative and easy to understand book, John Clayton and Nils Jansma – a geotechnical engineer and geologist – present convincing evidence that the Bible and the facts of science agree. As the public moves away from a belief in God as Creator of our heaven and earth, it becomes imperative that all believers be well informed on this vital subject. This book will become a resource you will use again and again.

    • Lifes Worth : The Case Againt Assisted Suicide

      $23.99

Today there is growing acceptance of the idea of physician-assisted suicide. Even Christians are beginning to factor the possibility into their ethical understandings. Would it not be compassionate to acquiesce in a terminally ill patient’s request to end it all? This sentiment seems reasonable, even humane. But as Harvard ethicist Arthur J. Dyck shows in this powerful work, there are solid moral and practical bases for the existing laws against assisted suicide in the United States and elsewhere. Over the course of four interconnected, tightly reasoned arguments, Dyck takes readers from a basic concern for human suffering–the main focus of those who support assisted suicide–to the deeper truths of life’s inherent worth. Dyck begins by examining the arguments of some physicians, moral philosophers, and theologians for making assisted suicide available. He also discusses the alternative practice of “comfort-only care,” explaining why it differs morally from assisted suicide and euthanasia. Dyck then explores and defends the moral structure underlying the West’s long tradition of homicide law as well as current laws against assisted suicide and euthanasia–laws designed to protect both freedom and human life. Finally, Dyck shows that the moral structure under girding our system of law is compatible with the views of Christianity, and he points to certain Christian beliefs that provide comfort and hope to those who are suffering, dying, or experiencing the death of loved ones. Throughout the book, Dyck staunchly maintains that assisted suicide is unacceptable in any and all circumstances. The practice denies terminally ill patients the possibility of recovery and robs them of the chance to rethink the meaning of their lives or to achieve spiritual growth. Furthermore, because it undermines the shared moral structure that makes community possible, assisted suicide bodes ill for society as a whole. This book is a must-read for anyone grappling with this hotly debated issue.

      $21.99

Chances are, no church is immune to the drug demographics in America. Pointing out that addiction is a pervasive problem in North American society, Lynn Dann provides pastors and other pastoral caregivers with crucial help in understanding the needs of the addicted, their families, and the congregations of which they are a part. He draws on years of experience as a pastor and a certified alcohol and substance abuse counselor to offer practical guidance on how to recognize the addicted and minister effectively to them.

Dann begins by outlining, in clear and accessible terms, the best contemporary thinking on the nature of addiction. From there he moves to a discussion of the particular resources that Christian churches can add to the treatment of addiction and the support of the addicted and their families. Finally, he includes tools for preaching and teaching on the nature of our drug-obsessed culture and biblical themes related to the care of the addicted. Those who are just beginning in pastoral ministry, as well as those who have engaged in it for many years, will find this an invaluable resource for knowing how to deal with this tragic and increasingly prevalent problem.

    • Practical Theology For Black Churches

      $30.00

The rift between black theology, with its social and political concerns, and black churches, with their emphasis on pastoral care and piety, has been growing. Andrew’s offers a way to bridge this gap by redefining the paradigm of church as “refuge” in terms of faith identity that brings together a concern for liberation with a pastoral focus on spirituality. This faith identity emerges from the biblical themes of creation and imago dei, the Exodus narrative, the suffering of Jesus and conversion, and eschatology and the kingdom of God. Andrews’s insightful analysis of the gulf between black churches and black theology reveals the invasive influence of individualism in black religious life as well as the shared values for social change and care of the soul. Notably, it is this influence of individualism that has disrupted communal solidarity and brought about the neglect of liberation ethics within black church life. This practical theology will contribute greatly towards renewing the pastoral and prophetic ministry of black religious life.

      $29.00

For more than three hundred years, black women have embodied a theology of hope, which has enabled them to overcome a history of abuse and violence. While a theology of hope has been widely discussed in twentieth century theology, it was born in slavery long before Jurgen Moltmann introduced it to America in 1967. Even womanist notions of hope have not explored the theological character of hope in abused black women’s narratives. Crawford argues that hope is the theological construct that moves black women beyond endurance and survival to transformation of their personal and communal realities. This book identifies and analyzes the theological vision of hope voiced within the narratives of enslaved, emancipated, and contemporary black women and brings that vision into discussion with contemporary womanist theologies

      $40.00

In this examination of the ethical significance of preaching, Charles Campbell provides both fresh insights into the relationship between preaching and ethics, and a challenging moral vision for the contemporary church. Moving beyond a narrow focus on moral decision-making or social-issues sermons. Campbell argues that a particular ethic–nonviolent resistance–is inherent in the practice of preaching and shapes the moral life of the church. In the face of the powers, the fundamental ethical task of preaching involves building up the church as a community of resistance. Employing three dimensions of character ethics–vision, practices, and virtues–Campbell demonstrates the concrete ways in which preachers may undertake this task.

    • Biblical Theology : Retrospect And Prospect

      $39.99

Ever since Brevard Childs’s 1970 declaration of the crisis in biblical theology, the discipline has faced rumors of its imminent demise. But the patient refuses to die. The doctors continue to argue over how to proceed with treatment and even over whether treatment is worth pursuing, but the patient hangs on. The turn of the millennium appears to be a good time for a fresh assessment of the discipline, where it has been, the status of various questions within it and its future prospects. Scott Hafemann pulls together a crack team of practitioners, scholars from the disciplines of both Old and New Testament studies, to give us a status report. After an introductory essay by Hafemann looking back on recent history, John H. Sailhammer (Southeastern Baptist), Brian G. Toews (Philadelphia College of the Bible), William J. Dumbrell (Presbyterian Theological Centre, Australia), Stephen G. Dempster (Atlantic Baptist), Richard Schults (Wheaton College), Gerald H. Wilson (Asuza Pacific) and M. Jay Wells chart the current state of Old Testament questions. James M. Scott (Trinity Western), Andreas J. KOstenberger (Southeaster Baptist), G. K. Beale (Wheaton College) and Peter Stuhlmacher (TUbingen) examine the state of New Testament studies. Questions surrounding the unity of the Bible are explored by Christopher R. Seitz (St. Andrew’s, Scotland), Nicholas Perrin (Westminster Abbey), Stephen E. Fowl (Loyola-Baltimore), Daniel Pl Fuller (Fuller Theological Seminary) and Ted M. Dornan (Taylor University). The prognosis for biblical theology is then suggested by Paul R. House (Wheaton College) and Graeme Goldsworthy (Moore Theological College, Australia).

    • Roger Staubach Captain America

      $15.95

If at one time the Dallas Cowboys were America’s Team, Roger Staubach was America’s Quarterback. Roger the Dodger was a real-life embodiment of apple pie, world championships, and role models. Staubach was a Heisman Trophy winner at Annapolis who served four years as a naval officer before going on to a stellar eleven-year career with the Dallas Cowboys that included four NFC championships and two Super Bowl titles. Considered the master of the two-minute offense and late-game comeback, Staubach eventually earned a spot in the Cowboys’ illustrious Ring of Honor and, ultimately in 1985, the Pro Football Hall of Fame.If ever there was a perfect meshing of franchise, coach, and on-field leader, it was the silver-white-and-blue Cowboys of the seventies with Tom Landry strolling the sidelines in his trademark fedora and the unflappable Staubach barking signals. He led the NFL in passing five times, and when he retired at age thirty-seven he departed the game in possession of the highest quarterback rating of all time. After his retirement from football, he pretty much left the game behind, forsaking a shot at coaching or television commentary to focus his energies on the corporate world as chairman and CEO of the Staubach Company, a diversified commercial real estate company.Roger Staubach: Captain America is an oral history of Staubach’s life, times, and career. It is told in the words of dozens of former teammates and opponents, friends, business associates, civic leaders, acquaintances, and others who have known him over the years. Staubach turned sixty in 2002, and this book offers a touching and telling testimonial to a true American hero and role model.

    • Historicity Of The Patriarchal Narratives

      $99.91

Archaeology seems to have become an active partner in the attempt to prove the historical truth of the Bible. Biblical archaeologists have gone to the field in search of Noah’s ark or the walls of Jericho, as if the finding of these artifacts would make the events of scripture somehow more true or real.
Thomas Thompson is one of the most vocal contemporary critics of biblical archaeology. His simple but powerful thesis is that archaeology cannot be used in the service of the Bible. Focusing on the patriarchal narratives_the stories of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob_he demonstrates that archaeological research simply cannot historically substantiate these stories.

Going further, Thompson says that archaeological materials should never be dated or evaluated on the basis of written texts. Looking to the patriarchal narratives in Genesis, he concludes that these stories are neither historical nor were they intended to be historical. Instead, these narratives are written as expressions of Israel’s relationship to God.

    • Echo Of The Soul

      $21.95

Few issues have caused the church more difficulty through the ages than those surrounding the human body. Throughout much of Christian history, spiritual seekers have considered the body to be, at best, a hindrance to spiritual enlightenment, and, at worst, an enemy to be suppressed. Many of our contemporary negative preoccupations with physical appearance, image, and sexuality derive from this ancient and habitual denial of the notion that we were created in God’s image.

In Echo of the Soul bestselling author J. Philip Newell finds that the human body, like creation, is actually the dwelling place of God. Using the Old Testament Wisdom literature, which informed Celtic spirituality’s positive understanding of what it means to be human, Newell looks at each part of the body as a sacred text that reveals something of the Divine. Looking back to a time before Christians began to distrust their physicality, Newell shows that our most ancient texts challenge modern assumptions about love, beauty, sexuality, learning, wisdom, power, and responsibility, and bridges the body/spirit divide.

    • Jesus Judaism And Christian Anti Judaism

      $28.00

Current scholarship in the study of ancient Christianity is now available to non-specialists through this collection of essays on anti-Judaism in the New Testament and in New Testament interpretation. While academic writing can be obscure and popular writing can be uncritical, this group of experts has striven to write as simple and clearly as possible on topics that have been hotly contested. The essays are arranged around the historical figures and canonical texts that matter most to Christian communities and whose interpretation has fed the negative characterizations of Jews and Judaism. A select annotated bibliography also gives suggestions for further reading. This book should be an excellent resource for academic courses as well as adult study groups.

    • Abide In Christ

      $16.99

So many Christians, instead of accepting God’s invitation to enter His throne room, stand alone outside the door, uncertain and ashamed. Christ beckons them to His banqueting table and offers them a room in His house, but they foolishly give up the glory of the life He as offered. They come to Jesus as Redeemer but never go beyond the doorway to abide in Him and experience the unspeakable joy of swelling with the King of Kings. Andrew Murray knew what it meant to be continually in the Father’s presence. Read these thirty-one heart-searching readings and learn how to live daily in closer communion and fellowship with Him. Accept God’s invitation and live in His blessing and glory instead of shuffling your feet at the gate.

    • Washing Of The Word

      $28.73

“Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering, for He is faithful that promised.” (Hebrews 10:23) Many believers are familiar with the idea of confession of sins. Howerver, this biblical word “profession” or ” confession” really means to say the same thing as-it is not only a confession on sins, but also a confession of faith. By using The Washing of the Word as a daily discipline, believers can “say the same thing as” God’s Word. This book is a handbook, a tool, to be used as an aid in speaking the Scriptures. Balanced and sound confessions of living trust and faith are excerpted from every book of the Bible. As we accept the Word of God as the ruling standard of our lives, hearts-and mouths-we will experience the reality of “the washing of the Word.”

    • Counseling Before Marriage Is A Necessity Not An Option

      $19.36

In the new millennium, the rate of divorce, erosion of family values, and delinquency of parents and children, are menaces staring at us in screaming headlines. I personally attribute this social cancer to the faulty, ignorant, unholy foundation that people build their marriages on. Most people simply do not start their marriages right! I see eye-to-eye with the issues expounded on by my colleague Rev. Isaac Arku in this book, which he has so painstakingly put together, to express his personal knowledge and emphasis on the importance of Bible-based pre-marital counseling. Single persons need to be adequately taught the essentials of family life before they marry. Rev. Arku’s book has a wealth of information for all sectors of our communities, and the rich contents are timely. -Rev. Dr. Samuel Kissesdoo Professor of Biology, Hampton University, VA Lic. • Psalms Volume 1

      $76.99

In this newest addition to the NIV Application Commentary series, Dr. Gerald H. Wilson examines the first 2 books of the Psalter (Psalms 172), bringing together over 20 years of personal research and teaching. Wilson9s seminal work on the shape and shaping of the Hebrew Psalter has opened a new avenue of psalms research by shifting focus from exclusive attention to individual psalms (through form critical analysis) to include the significance of groups of psalms and the arrangement of the Psalter as a whole. Bridging the distance from the prayer and worship of ancient Israel to the contemporary life of faith, this volume challenges the reader to see familiar psalms with new eyes. Individual interpretation is coupled with insight into the influence of the broader context, and the shaping of the book of Psalms as a whole is explored so that the Psalter emerges as a unified collection with a purpose of its own. When complete, the two-volume set will include original discussions of the shaping of the 5 books of the Psalter and of the collection as a whole, as well as extended consideration of Hebrew poetics, and the theology of the psalms. Scholars and students, clergy and laity will find this volume a stimulating window onto the historical, literary, and spiritual riches of the psalms.

    • City And Sanctuary

      $35.99

This volume challenges some common assumptions about the culture of the early Byzantine Near East by examining the architecture and urban design of five cities in that period. The author assesses the various kinds of religious structure found in each city, including cult centres, temples dedicated to the Olympian gods and buildings set aside for mystery religions. He also shows how the effects of these sanctuaries on civic religious life were hugely important and influential, and shaped the way that citizens conceived of their city and of themselves. This book should be of interest to: scholars and students of the New Testament and of the Hellenistic period; scholars and students of Judaic studies; scholars and students of Classical studies; and non-specialists interested in the life and times of the ancient world.

Difficult times, trials and tribulation are part of living in this world. However, God has provided a way for us to enjoy peace as a part of daily life. We can choose either to allow ourselves to be burdened with worry and anxiety or to live in the peace and joy the Father intended. • Paul And Jesus

      $23.50

It has been fashionable in New Testament scholarship to view the apostle Paul as a religious “freelancer” who corrupted Jesus’ teachings. David Wenham has written convincingly against this view, and in this new book he introduces readers to the “true” Paul.

Rooted in a thorough knowledge of the New Testament, this book fulfills two important purposes. First, it provides a superb introduction to Paul himself. Wenham describes Paul’s early life, shows the importance of his conversion, and follows him on his missionary journeys. Second, the book explores Paul’s relation to Jesus. Writing in dialogue with those who wish to distance Paul from Jesus, Wenham shows just how important the ministry and teaching of Jesus were to Paul’s own thought and evangelism. What emerges from a study of Paul’s epistles is a man who drew extensively on the traditions of Jesus and faithfully worked to spread his message to the rest of the world.
