Soul Searching : The Religious And Spiritual Lives Of American Teenagers
$148.33Winner of the 2006 Christianity Today Book Award for Christianity and Culture Description
In most discussions and analyses of American teenage life, one major topic is curiously overlooked–religion. Yet most American teens say that religious faith is important in their lives. What is going on in the religious and spiritual lives of American teenagers? What do they actually believe? What religious practices do they engage in? Do they expect to remain loyal to the faith of their parents? Or are they abandoning traditional religious institutions in search of a new, more “authentic” spirituality?
Answering these and many other questions, Soul Searching tells the definitive story of the religious and spiritual lives of contemporary American teenagers. It reports the findings of The National Study of Youth and Religion, the largest and most detailed such study ever undertaken. Based on a nationwide telephone survey of teens and their parents, as well as in-depth face-to-face interviews with more than 250 of the survey respondents, Soul Searching shows that religion is indeed a significant factor in the lives of many American teenagers. Chock full of carefully interpreted interview data and solid survey statistics, Soul Searching reveals many surprising findings. For example, the authors find that teenagers are far more influenced by the religious beliefs and practices of their parents and other adults than is commonly thought. They challenge the conventional wisdom that many teens today are “spiritual seekers.” And they show that greater teenage religious involvement is significantly associated with more positive adolescent life outcomes.
Soul Searching reveals the complexity of contemporary teenage religious life, showing that religion is widely practiced and positively valued by teens, but also de-prioritized and very poorly understood by them, yet significant nonetheless in shaping their lives. More broadly, Soul Searching describes what appears to be a major transformation of faith in the U.S., away from the substance of historical religious traditions and toward a new and quite different faith the authors call “Moralistic Therapeutic Deism.”Add to cartin stock within 3-5 days of online purchase

Gods Judgement : Regarding Controversial Issues
$21.23Fulfilled prophecy PROVES that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. This book discloses what the Lord’s Supper should really look like. It exposes the “gospel of the sacraments” as a false gospel. It debunks water baptism as a means of salvation. It exposes the “gospel of good works” as a way to Hell, not Heaven. Does the Church have the right to demand 10% of your income? Why are Pro-Life and Pro-Capital Punishment views very much compatible? Women pastors-is this Biblical? Multi-Culturalism and Diversity: Are they good for America? Are five billion people really under God’s wrath and condemnation? Is having sex before marriage morally acceptable? War On Terrorism And The Terror Of God Print On Demand Ttle
$38.99A Print on Demand Title
Uniquely relevant to a world shaken by recent acts of terror, this provocative analysis of our culture of violence calls people of faith back to the way of peace that has always been the proper Christian response to aggression.
With the newspaper in one hand and the Bible in the other, Lee Griffith takes a frank look at the historical events and modern forces that contribute to terrorism. This is not a book about small guerrilla bands of terrorists nor about so-called “Islamic terrorists” – it is a cogent, open-eyed analysis of a worldwide epidemic of violence.
In a discussion that will no doubt be controversial, Griffith argues that terrorism and counter-terrorism are identical phenomena when viewed at the spiritual level. To oppose terrorism with violence acknowledges the terrorist assumption that meaningful change is only possible through suffering and fear. Likewise, terrorism and counter-terrorism both employ similar God language to justify horrendous acts of violence. This is true not only of “rogue states” but also of Western leaders who use religious language on the eve of battle.
In response to today’s culture of terror, Griffith points the way to a theology of peace. He first looks at specific current events that contribute to terrorism. Next, he mines the history of the church to see how the tradition has responded to violence in the past. Finally, he probes the biblical texts for meaningful answers. The result is a stirring message for our day: rather than serving as an incitement to violence, the biblical concept of “the terror of God” stands as a renunciation of all violence – and of death itself.
Posing a radical faith for radical times, The War on Terrorism and the Terror of God is sure to generate discussion from every quarter.

Captain America And The Crusade Against Evil
$36.99As immediate and relevant as today’s headlines, this book sets forth a bold argument with direct implications for political life in America and around the world. Combining incisive cultural analysis and keen religious insight, Robert Jewett and John Shelton Lawrence maintain that American crusading – so powerfully embodied in popular entertainments – has striking parallels with Islamic jihad and Israeli militancy.
According to Jewett and Lawrence, American civil religion has both a humane, constitutional tradition and a violent strand that is now coming to the fore. The crusade to rid the world of evil and “evildoers” derives from the same biblical tradition of zealous warfare and nationalism that spawns Islamic and Israeli radicalism. In America, where this tradition has been popularized by superheroic entertainments, the idea of zealous war is infused with a distinctive sense of mission that draws on secular and religious images. These crusading ideals are visible in such events as the settling of the western frontier, the World Wars, the Cold War, the Gulf War, and America’s present war on terrorism.
In exploring the tradition of zealous nationalism, which seeks to redeem the world by destroying enemies, the authors provide a fascinating access to the inner workings of the American psyche. They analyze the phenomenon of zeal – the term itself is the biblical and cultural counterpart of the Islamic concept of jihad – and address such consequential topics as the conspiracy theory of evil, the problem of stereotyping enemies, the mystique of violence, the obsession with victory, and the worship of national symbols such as flags.
This critical book, however, is also immensely constructive. As Jewett and Lawrence point out, the same biblical tradition that allows for crusading mentalities also contains a critique of zealous warfare and a profound vision of impartial justice. This tradition of prophetic realism derives from the humane side of the biblical heritage, and the authors trace its manifestations within the American experience, including its supreme embodiment in Abraham Lincoln. Isaiah’s “swords into plowshares” image is carved on the walls of the United Nations building, thus standing at the center of a globally focused civil religion. Grasping this vision honored by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam alike includes recognizing the dangers of zealous violence, the illusions of current crusading, and the promise of peaceful coexistence under

IndexAdditional Info
Is a thoroughly Christian and biblically informed doctrine of creation compatible with widely held conclusions of modern science, especially biology? For Darrel R. Falk, this is not just an abstract question but one with which he has personally wrestled. A professor of biology, Falk brings together his biblically based understanding of creation and the most current research in biology. The result of his efforts to acknowledge the validity of science and the authority of Scripture is a new paradigm for relating the claims of science to the truths of Christianity. Written with the undergraduate student in mind, this book nonetheless will help anyone who is looking for a place to stand in the creation-evolution debate, fearful that they’ll have to choose between intellectual integrity and the faith of the church. Calling for charitable discussions within the church, Falk shows how an original and ongoing interaction of God with creation is fully reconcilable with the kinds of development identified by current biological science.Add to cartin stock within 3-5 days of online purchase

Sacred Longings : The Ecological Spirit And Global Culture
$33.33What do we really want? Internationally noted theologian Mary Grey believes we have gotten out of touch with our deepest desires. Trapped by the seductions of the marketplace, addicted to more and more, our culture has acquiesced in global capitalism’s most problematic characteristics, including widespread poverty and global maldistribution of resources. Grey’s hopeful book argues that there is a deeper language of desire that plumbs to what humanity really wants. Emergent in story and myth and symbol, these sacred longings can be seen in the simple yet profound elements–within and beyond Christianity–or water, light, and sacred space. Getting back in touch with our sacred longings entails a spiritual quest–a kind of ecomystical renewal–that can transform our desire, enliven our communities, simplify our lifestyles, and ultimately rekindle our global prospects.

Godawful : Connections Between Biblical Journeys And Life Transitions
$21.18Whether it’s leaving home, having children, losing a parent, or retiring, we spend much of our lives passing through transitions — and it is often very stressful to cope with changing circumstances, as we feel lost, confused, and depressed, sometimes even wondering “Where is God in all of this?”
The scriptures offer valuable guidance for navigating these difficult passages. Andre Papineau suggests that if we think of biblical journey stories (such as the Prodigal Son or Jonah’s journey to Nineveh) as accounts of life transitions, we can begin to understand the profound spirituality of our own transitions — no matter how “godawful” the experiences may seem.
By viewing transitional experiences and journey stories through a common lens, this enlightening book provides abundant insight into both the scriptures and the human condition, helping us to see how the hand of God, yes even “Godawful,” is at work in our everyday lives. Each chapter includes helpful exercises and discussion questions, making it an ideal individual or group study resource.

Building Character
$16.18Are we facing a moral crisis in today’s world? Perhaps so, judging by the daily headlines that parade the ethical failings of numerous public figures before us. It seems that more traditional role models, whether in the worlds of business, government, sports, or sadly, even the ministry, than ever are disappointing us and falling short of expectations and fostering cynicism rather than idealism. But these lapses are hardly limited to well-known people. Many surveys have made us aware of a cavalier approach to values in general, such as rampant cheating from term papers to tax returns.
So how can we arrest this decline and instill a greater sense of “character” in our lives? “Character” is an elusive term, but we usually use it to describe the quality of a person’s inner being — their “moral fiber.” In this insightful set of meditations, E. Dale Click suggests that the way to develop character is to put God at the center of our lives. And, he points out, the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes provide us with the blueprints to enjoying life. These essays illustrate that the timeless yet timely guides to living in God’s laws (the commandments) and his declarations (the beatitudes) exemplify all the admirable characteristics of the godly, character-filled life.

Reading The Bible In The Strange World Of Medicine
$41.99Author of such major books as “Remembering Jesus: Christian Community, Scripture, and the Moral Life,” Allen Verhey has become one of today’s most trusted Christian voices in contemporary ethics, including the moral challenges that new medical technologies pose to Christian faith and decision-making.
With this new book Verhey brings the biblical tradition to bear on contemporary bioethical concerns. Drawing on an unmatched depth of insight in these two realms, Verhey explores how the Bible can illuminate and guide medical ethics. He argues that churches are called to think and speak clearly about bioethical concerns, and he lays out here the scriptural tools for them to do so. After firmly grounding Christian ethical discourse in Scripture, Verhey shows how the Bible can be applied to such pressing questions as suffering, genetic intervention, abortion, reproductive technologies, end-of-life care, physician-assisted suicide, and more.
Filled with faith-based wisdom and apt illustrations of the moral dilemmas discussed, this book is a must-read for Christians grappling with the ethical dimensions of medicine today.

America A Call To Greatness
$20.00“John W. Chalfant’s important book America – A Call To Greatness is going to produce bountiful blessings upon the Christian ministries of this troubled land. He has captured the essence of militant Christianity as it relates to love of country and devotion to democratic principles which it is every citizen’s opportunity and obligation to uphold. I believe that serious readers everywhere will find the imprint of the hand of God on this marvelous contribution to Christian and patriotic literature.” D. James Kennedy, D.D., Ph.D. Senior Minister, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church “John Chalfant has faithfully strived to demonstrate the incontrovertible fact that God is sovereign over all nations and all peoples. Without a renewed acknowledgment of accountability to our Creator, America will perish.” Howard Phillips, Chairman The Conservative Caucus, Inc. “America – A Call To Greatness! What a title and what a book! I have believed, and taught, that only two nations ever were ordained of God for Greatness! Israel and America! This is a must read for everyone, but especially for clergy and others in key leadership. We must be moved to action and the saving of the freedoms of our great Nation. This book will so motivate every honest reader, but especially the clergy.” Col. E.H. “Jim” Ammerman, Chaplain, U.S. Army (Ret.) President, Chaplaincy of Full Gospel Churches “In a mere 228 pages John Chalfant encapsulates the cause-and-effect relationship between epochal spiritual and political struggles of our times. He offers foolproof, attainable, action-based solutions for the restoration of America’s vanishing freedoms. America – A Call To Greatness is powerful, hard-hitting, and holds no punches. Fully documented, it is filled with Bible-based political realities, hope and inspiration. As Chalfant contends, ‘The most exhaustive book ever written on politics is the Bible.’ America – A Call To Greatness should be MUST reading for every American, including politicians, clergymen, businessmen, high school and college students, homeschoolers and citizens from every rank and religious persuasion. This book contains the keys to the restoration of our country.” Donald S. McAlvany, Editor The McAlvany Intelligence Advisor

Written With Rhyme And Reason
$24.36“He did it without rhyme or reason” is an old saying we’ve heard many times in the past. When considering a title for my collection of writings, I realized that I had written poetry with rhyme and reason. Thus, the title and the layout for the book: the reason will appear on the left and the rhyme will appear on the right. I’ve been reminded that “this just isn’t done.” But, as my daughter, Susie, said, “Just because it isn’t done doesn’t mean that it couldn’t or shouldn’t be done. For instance, think of the art world. Doesn’t it enhance Wyeth’s painting, ‘Christina’s World,’ to know the story behind it?” I have sought to “catch the current in events” in the world and in our everyday lives. I have tackled everything from politics to puppy dogs. I invite you to consider then lament, laugh, or praise God with me.

Uneasy Conscience Of Modern Fundamentalism
$17.99Originally published in 1947, “The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism” has since served as the manifesto of evangelical Christians serious about bringing the fundamentals of the Christian faith to bear in contemporary culture. In this classic book Carl F. H. Henry, the father of modern fundamentalism, pioneered a path for active Christian engagement with the world a path as relevant today as when it was first staked out.
Now available again and featuring a new foreword by Richard J. Mouw, “The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism” offers a bracing world-and-life view that calls for boldness on the part of the evangelical community. Henry argues that a reformation is imperative within the ranks of conservative Christianity, one that will result in an ecumenical passion for souls and in the power to meaningfully address the social and intellectual needs of the world.

Addiction
$21.99Chances are, no church is immune to the drug demographics in America. Pointing out that addiction is a pervasive problem in North American society, Lynn Dann provides pastors and other pastoral caregivers with crucial help in understanding the needs of the addicted, their families, and the congregations of which they are a part. He draws on years of experience as a pastor and a certified alcohol and substance abuse counselor to offer practical guidance on how to recognize the addicted and minister effectively to them.
Dann begins by outlining, in clear and accessible terms, the best contemporary thinking on the nature of addiction. From there he moves to a discussion of the particular resources that Christian churches can add to the treatment of addiction and the support of the addicted and their families. Finally, he includes tools for preaching and teaching on the nature of our drug-obsessed culture and biblical themes related to the care of the addicted. Those who are just beginning in pastoral ministry, as well as those who have engaged in it for many years, will find this an invaluable resource for knowing how to deal with this tragic and increasingly prevalent problem.

Charmed Life : The Spirituality Of Potterworld
$15.00Potter fever has swept the world and shows no signs of abating. the books and the recent movie have attracted millions of followers and fans, all of them eagerly awaiting the next installments. Along with the widespread enjoyment and appreciation of Harry Potter and his friendships, however, criticism of the series has also emerged. The opposition has focused on two issues; the darkness of the novels and their apparent endorsement of witchcraft and the occult. In A Charmed Life, Francis Bridger, a theologian and pastor, argues that far from promoting the dark arts, the Potter books are firmly based in Christian values, and offer valuable insights into our characters, our relationships, our priorities, and our spirituality.
Taking readers on an entertaining tour of Potterworld, Bridger shows that each adventure presents new ways of expressing and exploring key spiritual issues, from the meaning of justice, to the need to confront fears, to the debilitating effects of evil. As Harry and his friends deal with one another, face their enemies, cope with their variously dysfunctional families, and experience the common problems o fgrowing up, Bridger domonstrates, it is their intrinsic human goodness, love, and friendship–not wizardry or magic–that allows them to triumph over evil.

Liberty And Justice For All
$55.00In the century between the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln and the “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King, Jr., America sought both to rebuff and to redeem the promise of “liberty and justice for all.” The story of slavery and the bloody civil war that abolished it has been told, but the story of the struggle for liberty and justice by and for African Americans in the half-century following the end of Reconstruction has been largely overlooked. In this highly readable narrative, distinguished historian Ronald C. White, Jr. portrays the people, their ideas, and their ongoing struggle for racial reform in the United States from 1877-1925–a vital prelude to the modern civil rights movement and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Myth Of The American Superhero
$39.99From the Superman of comic books to Hollywood’s big-screen action stars, Americans have long enjoyed a love affair with the “superhero.” In this engaging volume John Shelton Lawrence and Robert Jewett explore the historical and spiritual roots of the superhero myth and its deleterious effect on America’s democratic vision.
Arguing that the superhero is the antidemocratic counterpart of the classical “monomyth” described by Joseph Campbell, the authors show that the American version of the monomyth derives from tales of redemption. In settings where institutions and elected leaders always fail, the American monomyth offers heroes who combine elements of the selfless servant with the lone, zealous crusader who destroys evil. Taking the law into their own hands, these unelected figures assume total power to rid the community of its enemies, thus comprising a distinctively American form of pop fascism.
Drawing widely from books, films, TV programs, video games, and places of superhero worship on the World Wide Web, the authors trace the development of the American superhero during the twentieth century and expose the mythic patterns behind the most successful elements of pop culture. Lawrence and Jewett challenge readers to reconsider the relationship of this myth to traditional religious and social values, and they show how, ultimately, these antidemocratic narratives gain the spiritual loyalties of their audiences, in the process inviting them to join in crusades against evil.
Finally, the authors pose this provocative question: Can we take a holiday from democracy in our lives of fantasy and entertainment while preserving our commitment to democratic institutions and ways of life?

Struggling With Scripture
$18.00Challenging the traditional meaning of Scripture is not easy, even in the face of issues that call into question those traditional interpretations. In these reflections, Brueggemann says that the Bible, as the live word of the living God, will not submit to the accounts we prefer to give of it. The Bible’s inherent, central evangelical proclamation has greater and more permanent authority than our inescapably provisional interpretations. Placher notes that taking the Bible most seriously means struggling to understand its meaning as well as affirming its truth. And Blount distinguishes what some may claim as a “last word,” which is necessarily a dead word, from the living word that is God’s word to us today.

Wrath Of Jonah
$56.66Internationally renowned scholar Erhard Gerstenberger here offers a radical departure from traditional treatments. Rather than a systematic approach to theological topics in the Old Testament, Gerstenberger discusses its various theological voices rooted in different social settings within ancient Israel: the family and clan, the village, the tribal group, and the kingdom. Further, he discusses the variety of Israel’s views concerning the divine – polytheism, syncretism, and monotheism. Gerstenberger concludes with his reflections on how contemporary theology is informed by the biblical witness and how it must be contextual and ecumenical in order to be authentic.

Who Is My Enemy
$19.99Who Is My Enemy? is designed as a popular level introduction to eight current flash-point issues in our culture. The book provides a summary overview designed to enable the reader to respond to the issues as Christ would–not by resorting to privitization of our faith, or abdication, but to engagement that leads to transformation. The book is designed to help Christians understand how the world is thinking in order to begin to develop an appropriate Christian response to each issue. Rather than presenting simplistic either/or answers, the book recognizes that each issue contains elements that biblical Christians can strongly support and also strongly oppose. The hot topics are: pluralism, postmodernism, New Age explosion, evolution, abortion/euthanasia, feminism, homosexuality, therapy idolatry, and materialism. Picture it as an extended newscast reporting on each issue and weaving biblial perspective throughout.

Earth Habitat : Eco Injustice And The Churchs Response
$35.00This single volume gathers theologians from around the world to address three pressing questions: How can Christianity and Christian churches rethink themselves and their roles in light of the endangered earth? What “earth-honoring” elements does justice- oriented Christianity have to contribute to the common good? And how can communities and churches respond creatively and constructively on a local level to these vast global forces? This volume captures the chief themes and presentations from the October 1998 conference on social justice, ecology, and church entitled “Ecumenical Earth” and held at Union Theological Seminary. Among the 18 contributors to this trailblazing conference are Rasmussen and Hessel, James Cone, Kusumita Pedersen, Brigitte Kahl, Ibrahim M. Justice Men Owe Women
$26.66This new Sacred Energies volume shows how the world’s major religious traditions, though largely patriarchal, can also serve as a profound resource for redressing gender injustices. This reassessment must be taken up by men themselves. The heritage of our sacred texts speaks in a male voice and almost always to male advantage. Men therefore owe it to themselves to extricate themselves from this complicity and to ask, as does this book, how our scriptures, founding prophets, and ancestors can be used today to further justice in relations between the genders.

Gifted By Otherness
$22.95Gay and lesbian Christians are in the awkward position of trying to explain themselves to two mutually hostile audiences. On the one side, the gay-lesbian community is often deeply suspicious of anyone connected with Christianity. On the other side sits the church, which often wishes that gays and lesbians would go away, or at least disappear into the woodwork quietly. But the gay and lesbian community has a unique vocation in today’s church, one of challenging the church to be inclusive of all God’s children–the central message of the Gospel. Based on retreats they have presented to churches and seminaries, authors L. William Countryman and M.R. Ritley explore what it means to affirm, not merely accept, being gay or lesbian, as well as Christian. This pro-active and self-affirming book provides new hope for the lesbigay community, their families and their communities, confidently appropriating and re-telling the biblical story of this unique and gifted minority’s spiritual journey.

Letters Across The Divide (Reprinted)
$15.00In this stirring book, two friends–a black minister and a white businessman–discuss candidly the hang-ups, stereotypes, and sins that inhibit interracial friendships. Some people may think that racism is no longer a problem in our society, but David Anderson and Brent Zuercher make an effective case for just the opposite: both black and white people still harbor wrong assumptions and resentments toward each other.
Believing that the church is called to a deeply felt reconciliation between the races, Anderson and Zuercher strive to understand each other. They hash out their differences, giving voice to feelings most of us have had but would never express out loud. The result is a book that provokes thought, arouses emotion, and ultimately spurs actions, stressing that the most effective way of dealing with the many facets of racial reconciliation is through real and connected friendships.

Genetic Turning Points A Print On Demand Title
$38.99360 Pages
Additional Info
Human genetic intervention could be considered a microcosm of the larger field of bioethics. According to James Peterson, “it raises almost all the basic issues addressed in a standard bioethics course, from informed consent to the goals of medicine.” Peterson argues that it is imperative to view human genetic intervention from an ethical framework, particularly as the technology in that intervention advances at an exponential rate.Peterson’s goal in Genetic Turning Points was to tie together some of the various questions related to human genetic intervention (better known, perhaps, as genetic manipulation or genetic engineering). He begins with a look at medical technology and moves on to major issues including genetic research, genetic testing, genetic drugs, and genetic surgery (physical manipulation of human genes in the body). The issues are raised in a progressive approach. Genetic research is the foundation for genetic testing and genetic drugs, thus issues related to genetic research are looked at first, and then issues related to genetic testing and drugs. Since genetic surgery techniques are still being perfected, and are not as available as the other technologies, Peterson looks at this vital issue last.
Christians, according to LeRoy Waters, have tended to view human genetics from one of two positions (not usually both): cosmic theology and casuistic analysis. Cosmic theology simply means looking at the grand scheme of God’s plan for humanity; casuistic analysis is that which addresses the questions of practice. Peterson hopes to bring the two positions together in a cogent and effective manner. He feels that one’s understanding of God’s plan for humanity (our purpose) shapes the concrete decisions of life (the practice). Ideally, Christians should be aware of both how purpose shapes practice and how practice questions purpose. Thus, Peterson sees the medical and ethical issues as eminently practical, but defined and shaped by one’s metaphysical beliefs.
Genetic Turning Points is laid out in a progressive manner, but topics can stand on their own. Chapters are generally short and the indexes and cross-references allow one to find a particular topic quickly and easily. Since there are fifteen chapters, the book easily lends itself to undergraduate or postgraduate study (one chapter a week), but is not solely for students. It is also for professionals (doctors, clergy, etc.) and for educated lay people. Its information is timely and it

Act Of God Active God
$16.66This book raises in a straighforward fashion the faith-related questions that victims/survivors of natural disasters have as a result of their experiences. Is the disaster an “act of God”? Did God cause the disaster? If God is all powerful, why did God allow it to hapen? Dr. Gary Harbaught provides insights and understandings to help persons of faith to struggle with that seeming contradiction. Instead of seeing disasters as “acts of God”, he shows that when disasters occur, God in fact is active: active in and through our questions, confusion, and doubts; active in and through our responses and actions; active in and through the community; and active in and through people of faith.

Victims And Sinners
$40.00More than one million Americans participate in nearly 50,000 Alcoholics Anonymous groups in America. Addiction recovery groups such as A.A. often rely on religious themes in their work, offering a form of spirituality as a way to deal with life’s problems. Many recovery groups borrow selectively from theology because the full Christian doctrine of sin can be alienating for those in recovery. Linda Mercadante offers a theological critique of addiction recovery programs and proposes an alternate view of addiction that avoids both excessive blame and excessive victimization. This book is for pastoral counselors, clergy, laypersons, and recovery group members wanting to reassess addiction recovery from a theological perspective. It offers a wake-up call to the church to take seriously the need to establish recovery groups and to construct a language for better dialogue.

Why America Needs Religion A Print On Demand Title
$23.99This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable.
What is wrong with America? It has often called itself a Christian nation, yet its social and moral problems are legion. The increasing rates of crime, juvenile delinquency, teenage pregnancy, sexual promiscuity, and divorce are frequently linked to the declining importance of religious belief. But is there more than a presumed link between the strength of personal religiousness and moral behavior? Yes, says Guenter Lewy, and the large quantity of empirical data in existence which establishes that link ought to move people – Christians and non-Christians alike – to sit up and take note.
In this trenchant analysis of the moral decline of modern America, Lewy describes the moral crisis caused by secular modernity and points to the role of religiousness – especially Christian religiousness – as a necessary bulwark against today’s social ills. This work is all the more intriguing in that Lewy is an agnostic who has nonetheless concluded that a society that cuts itself off from the religious roots of its moral heritage is doomed to decline.
Lewy traces the rise of secularism in Western society, focusing particularly on the cult of individualism, and describes the social consequences of the weakened role of religion. He demonstrates that the crisis of the family and the rise of the underclass in our inner cities are linked to the decline of traditional values and shows, on the basis of surveys and other empirical data, that genuine religiousness can ward off some of the corrosive effects of modernity. Lewy concludes by calling on Christians, adherents of other faiths, and true humanists to join forces in the struggle to reverse the current ethos of radical individualism that threatens the moral integrity of our society.

This book spans a broad range of geographic, ethnic, racial and denominational range of American women’s religious experiences and contributions and attempts to preverse the intregrity and diversity of their voices. In the absense of strong counterevidence, the author has assumed that American women were basically telling the truth about who they were, what they did, and why they did it.

Abandoned Generation A Print On Demand Title
$21.99This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable.
This critical yet constructive assessment of the current state of higher education in America exposes the disconcerting causes and effects of failed campus life while posing real solutions for reforming today’s colleges and universities.
Convinced that America’s institutions of higher learning now face a crisis – that they are not meeting the educational needs of their students, that faculty members can do better – William H. Willimon and Thomas H. Naylor here propose bold changes in the nation’s undergraduate educational system. By looking at academic life from the students’ point of view – the text is filled with real-life situations, reflections from students, and poignant illustrations – The Abandoned Generation evaluates American colleges and universities on the basis of the quality of the lives that they are now producing.
Willimon and Naylor take an honest look at three realities of student life – substance abuse, indolence, and excessive careerism. They then evaluate the underlying causes – the sense of meaninglessness in student life and the absence of community. Finally, they build a provocative four-tier strategy for change – restructuring the academy, teachers who actually teach, curriculum reform, and the creation of learning communities.

$38.33A personal testimony of God and politics in the Holy Land. Mitri Raheb is a Palestinian Arab Lutheran Christian pastor who ministers in his hometown of Bethlehem. For many American Christians this combination of identities is incomprehensible. They assume that Palestinian Arabs are Muslims, not Christians, much less Lutherans. Raheb writes as a cultural mediator to the Western Christian world and as a local theologian for the Palestinian community. He grapples with how Palestinian Christians can develop a local theology that can be both truthful and helpful in mediating the conflicts between Israel and Palestine and among Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Both are conflicts in which religion, politics, and collective identity intertwine.

Welfare In America A Print On Demand Title
$53.99This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable.
Between 1992 and 1995, the Center for Public Justice, a Christian civic-education and public-policy think tank undertook an extended project named the Welfare Responsibility Inquiry. In May 1994, the project hosted a conference in Washington, DC, on “Public Justice and Welfare Reform.” The project involved, at its center, a group of scholars who met periodically to discuss the issues involved. Those scholars then wrote the papers which are collected in Welfare in America.
“Welfare in America,” James Skillen writes, “argues that assistance to the needy does not, and should not, come primarily from government. Government, whether at federal or state levels, should help hold people accountable to their various institutional and personal responsibilities rather than fill in for every failure.” The range of topics addressed in Welfare in America is extensive. Though no reader will agree with everything here, those whose calling requires them to think through this issue with care will be wise to include Welfare in America in their list of books to be read.

Ending Auschwitz : The Future Of Jewish And Christian Life
$32.00This book begins with Marc Ellis’s own journey to Auschwitz in 1992 and reflects back on his past, which includes his childhood experience as a Jew and his university years studying under Holocaust theologian Richard Rubenstein. Marc Ellis has taught and traveled among third-world peoples and has been outspoken on Middle Eastern issues. Based on this experience, Ellis has come to see that both Judaism and Christianity are locked in a static position. He shows that there is a continuity between the era of Christendom, exemplified by 1492, and Auschwitz and provides evidence to show that they are intimately linked. He sees the possibility of Jews and third-world Christians joining in a solidarity characterized by suffering and hope. He advocates what he calls “the ultimate religious act of contemporary Judaism and Christianity” to end Auschwitz and 1492 and to begin anew to create a world where all people can claim their own freedom and history.

Using Gods Resources Wisely
$17.00New and different readings of biblical texts are one consequence of a growing awareness of the environmental crisis and how it relates to social relations, especially in urban settings. Walter Brueggemann explores readings from Isaiah and how they relate to the environment and urban crisis. He approaches the readings as an artistic-theological history of the city of Jerusalem–a case study of urban environmental crisis that resulted from a lost sense of covenantal neighborliness. Reflecting on Jerusalem, its failure, demise, and prospect, Brueggemann uncovers some alarming parallels in today’s urban cities, and offers a demanding but hopeful challenge to faith.

Beyond Charity : Reformation Initiatives For The Poor
$36.66The common stereotype is that the Reformers separate public and private morality and were indifferent to the ethical import of social structures and institutions. Beyond Charity calls this understanding into question by providing an analysis of the historical situation and translationof primary documents. The medieval point of view, formed by piety of achievement, idealized poverty — either as voluntary renunciation or as almsgiving. In either case the material effects on actual poverty were slight, and the religious endorsement of poverty precluded urban efforts to address this growing problem. The Reformers impelledby their theology, developed and passed new legislative structures for addressing social welfare needs. The key to their undertakings was the conviction that social ethics is the continuation of community worship. In the first half, this book sets forth the medieval context, details Luther’s critique of the profit economy of his day, and analyzes the actual social welfare programs that issued from his theology. The second half provides translations of selected legislative programs from the church orders of the Reformation.
