How To Profit From Prophets
$16.18Prophets have not done well in history — at least not by ordinary standards:
Elijah seemed to be the only one in Israel resisting Baalism
Amos was told to keep silent and go back where he came from
Jeremiah was scorned and imprisoned
John, the Baptist was beheaded, and …
Jesus, the greatest of them all, was crucifiedBy ordinary standards the prophets have not done well because, as Jesus said, we ignore or kill the messengers of God. And yet it is the extraordinary standards of the prophets that intrigue us, inspire us and stimulate our minds and consciences to God’s ways and thoughts. Because of their extraordinary standards the prophets continue to shape us and history.
In this challenging Advent-Christmas book, Maurice A. Fetty reminds us again how it is important to “profit from prophets.”

Upside Down : The Paradox Of Servant Leadership
$15.99If you’re tired of feeling like there is more to leadership than telling others what to do, Upside Down will help you practice true spiritual leadership and follow Jesus’ leadership advice to empower others.
THE LEADERSHIP STYLE OF JESUS. Most believers are familiar with Jesus’ recipe for leadership success: “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” (Mark 10: 43-44) But when it comes to putting that into practice, many leaders are content to leave Jesus’ advice on a dusty road in Galilee and follow society’s leadership trends.
Servant leadership-the kind of leadership Jesus practiced-is something that sets believers apart. The choice of whether to follow the leadership path to power, authority, and control or the road to humility and putting others first is an important one. Jesus cuts through the superfluous issues surrounding leadership and moves straight to the heart of the matter, addressing our motives and values, writes Dr. Rinehart.
If you’re ready to take your leadership to a new level by following Jesus’ footsteps, Upside Down will challenge you to equip and liberate others to fulfill God’s purposes for them in the world.

But we can be set free from these and other difficult emotions and situations that pull us out of fellowship with God.J. Dwight Pentecost draws from his years of teaching and counseling experience to find the answers to life’s problems in the Word of God by surveying fifteen Bible characters who struggle with issues such as guilt, doubt, and resentment. But this is much more than a survey of Bible characters! It’s a path to finding unwavering hope, unsurpassable peace, and unlimited love.

500 Illustrations : Stories From Life For Preaching And Teaching
$29.99They are the lifeblood of preaching, the sparks that allow the sermon to catch fire in the imaginations of the congregation. Without them the best exegesis of the text, the most well-reasoned argument, the most polished delivery fall flat. They are illustrations, and they are an indispensable part of the preacher’s craft. Consistently they appear at the top of the list when pastors identify the areas in which they need more and better resources for preaching. Books of illustrations have been around for a long time to help address this problem, but too often the illustrations they contain have been circulating for fifty years or more, and therefore sound out-of-date or simply not in tune with the lives of today’s congregations. 500 Illustrations: Stories from Life for Preaching and Teaching meets the need for contemporary, engaging stories and quotations with which to illustrate the sermon. Each of the illustrations has been taken from recent newspapers, magazines, television programs, and the like. They are truly what the book’s title suggests: stories drawn from the lives of real people, presented as brief anecdotes to be used to deepen the preaching and teaching of the gospel.

Covenants And Care
$30.00Covenants and Care takes these hard realities into account as the authors, a team of experts in ministry and the Bible, offer skills for the long haul. They employ the Old Testament notion of covenant and ask ministers to enter a covenant both for their own self-care and as a key to framing and enlivening their care for others in ministry. True-to-life stories show how biblically-based covenantal relationships with clear boundaries promote healthy relationships, and how they are integral to faithful personal and pastoral care. The authors’ sensible yet sensitive approach offers practical help for the minister’s self-care while providing tools for meeting such challenges as conflict in the congregation, issues of sexual ethics, questions of power and conscience, and the dynamics of spirituality.

Junior High Ministry (Expanded)
$24.99Rowdy, restless, silly, out of control, moody, vulgar, disrespectful, unpredictable — this may be the junior high stereotype, writes youth ministry expert Wayne Rice. In this edition of Junior High Ministry — updated and expanded to reflect the realities of middle school ministry at the turn of the century — the cofounder of Youth Specialties takes a comprehensive look at the early adolescent experience: – A case for junior high ministry — and what it takes to work effectively with junior highers. – New material of turn-of-the-century trends in the youth culture — and on programming for kids living in this culture. – A chapter each on the five pivotal areas of development — physical, social, intellectual, psycho-emotional, and faith — among junior highers. – Altogether new chapters on parental involvement and mentoring in the context of junior high ministry . . . all topped off with 50 creative and practical ideas — fun and games, Bible study openers, mixers, entire events — that are tailored for junior highers in Sunday school, the youth room, or your living room. Whether you’re training for youth work or a trainer of youth workers, Junior High Ministry will keep finding its dog-eared way to the top of your most used resources.

44 Questions For Congregational Self Appraisal
$23.99Churches don’t sit still; they are either planning for the future or wishing for the past. Yet, even when setting about to discern the future into which the Spirit is leading, how does a congregation map its way? How does it understand its strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and limitations, gifts and graces? In 44 Questions for Congregational Self-Appraisal, Lyle E. Schaller directs the reader to the crucial questions a church must ask itself if it is to understand its mission and the course it must chart in order to achieve that mission. He helps pastors, congregational leaders, and strategic planning groups understand that the questions we ask and the data we gather tend to set our priorities, and for this reason it is crucial to seek the correct information from the outset. Schaller shows church leaders how not to become trapped by “means to an end” questions (real estate, staffing, money, and schedules) and focus instead on questions related to the congregation’s distinctive mission (identity, purpose, role, and God’s call) and message.

William H. Willimon, Dean of the Chapel
Professor of Christian Ministry Duke UniversityKeller’s treatment of the Gospel selections is direct, hard-hitting and frequently passionate. This is good fodder for the would-be preacher or layperson who wants to take the scripture seriously. Sometimes sharp-edged, sometimes humorous, these sermons are always thought-provoking.
Rev. Paul F. McCann, Retired Executive Presbyter
Olympia PresbyteryWayne has a gift of helping us make an emotional connection to biblical story, pushing us headlong into an examination of ourselves, the meaning of faith, and the nature of the church.
Rev. Lynn Famum, Executive Presbyter

Lord Is Risen He Is Risen Indeed He Really Is Cycle A
$17.43At first glance the Easter title may seem out of place for a book half full of sermons for Lent. But Richard Sheffield argues and preaches that the sermon for Easter Day is really the sermon for every day in the life of a Christian. The Lord Is Risen is really the only sermon we have or need to have. How we live out our lives in response to that central fact of our faith fills the sermons in Lent, as well as Easter, with hope. Hope in the here-and-now as well as in the hereafter.
Rev. Sheffield has little patience with those who would turn the good news about God into the bad news about us … and it shows. He writes: “Belief is more than just ascertaining the facts and figures of faith. Or figuring out the best way to keep God happy long enough to get into heaven. Belief is living life now certain of the love of God in Jesus Christ for you and me. Living life unafraid — even of death itself.”

Divine Salvage Cycle A
$16.18While fewer than 25 percent of the sermons preached from contemporary American pulpits are derived from Old Testament texts, preachers will find in this book new reason to base their sermons on the First Testament, especially Genesis and Exodus. “… among the main characteristics of the First Testament is the demand by God for us to be accountable; to act in ways that exhibit that we are strong in the ways of God and the world, as the people of God …throughout these passages [there is] a profound testimony to the presence of God in the chaos of life …these passages seek to reveal God’s steadfast love” (from the Foreword).
The authors of this book write with power and conviction and their messages will become inspiration for the reader and a resource for every preacher.

Lectionary Preaching Workbook Series 6 Cycle A
$58.68Welcome, new friend, to CSS Publishing Company’s Lectionary Preaching Workbook, Series VI, Cycle A. As we look forward to our year together and as we come to grips with the words and teachings of the Holy Book, many thoughts are on my mind, some of which I should like to share with you. I have yet to know a brother or sister in this solemn calling of “preacher” who did not have some very definite ideas about preaching. Being no exception to this bent, I dare to set forth some biases which lie behind what I hope you choose to read here. (from the Introduction)
With these introductory words, E. Carver McGriff sets forth to provide some of the most timely and thought-provoking research on the lectionary texts ever made available.
Included for each scriptural lesson in the lectionary are:
A listing of the applicable Revised Common, Roman Catholic, and Episcopal lectionary texts.
Commentary that is more than academic exegesis — McGriff brings to the forefront those points in the text that relate most poignantly to our contemporary reality.
Suggested sermon titles for each of the three texts for each Sunday.
Themes and suggested directions for preaching on each text.
Several additional illustrations to enliven your preaching.
A description of the Psalm of the day.

Preaching The Miracles Series 2 Cycle A
$22.43While this book offers information for the sermon writer, Brauninger avoids presenting a ready-made cloak of words for a morning sermon. Instead she invites preachers and their audiences to explore the gap between the “back then” and the “now.” This not only answers questions, it also generates them — crucial in understanding the miracles of Jesus. Five sections are devoted to each of the miracles:
Text — The entire lectionary text is provided, preventing the need to refer to a Bible.
What’s Happening? — A synopsis of points of action within each miracle story.
Connecting Points – Conversations — The central material of each chapter. Brauninger engages in an imaginary exchange with main characters and an occasional bystander.
Words — Significant terms are examined.
Gospel Parallels — Similarities and differences are highlighted.Add to cartin stock within 3-5 days of online purchase

Parables Of Jesus Cycle A
$23.68Narrative or story preaching has called attention to Jesus’ parables, since many of those parables are stories. Is there a preacher, especially one who uses the lectionary, who does not preach on a parable from time to time? This book conducts an exegesis of scripture, provides context for each passage, suggests contemporary applications with questions that challenge, and gives preachers sample openings for the composition of a sermon/homily.

Each sermon also includes a children’s message.

Word From The Wise Old Woman
$16.18Anyone growing up in the 1940s and 50s was conditioned to interpret the phrase “God is like a Father” almost solely as “God is a Father!” Today we are living in a time in which the metaphors for God are expanding.
This collection of sermons, preached over a ten-year period, reveals God’s self-giving love through the metaphor of a Wise Old Woman.
For at least 25,000 years humanity worshiped feminine images of the divine. Then it all changed, and for the past 6,000 to 8,000 years virtually all mainstream religions have conceived of the divine primarily in masculine terms. We now find ourselves at another transformational time in history regarding our understanding of the divine. It is a time in which we are becoming increasingly aware that no one image, and certainly no one gender, can adequately convey the totality of the ultimate divine mystery of the universe.

Glory Of Our Weakness
$16.18This Lenten series includes sermons for Ash Wednesday, the five Sundays of Lent, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Easter Sunday, and the Sunday after Easter.
The messages issue a call for repentance, appropriate to the Lenten season, yet throughout the series they reach deeply inside relating to human hurts and needs. “Barabbas Speaks” (Fifth Sunday in Lent) is a first-person story sermon spoken from Barabbas’ point of view. The Palm Sunday sermon, “The Strength To See It Through,” merges the celebratory nature of the triumphant day with the dark Passion yet to come. “Resurrection Of The Heart,” an Easter Sunday sermon, preaches forgiveness in very personal terms, and “Late For Easter” (Sunday after Easter) plants the good news in those troubled hearts which haven’t yet received it.

Preaching From The Minor Prophets A Print On Demand Title
$19.99Despite the authority and theological richness of the twelve books of the Minor Prophets, these Old Testament writings are perennially neglected by the church and the pulpit. This volume was written to provide clergy with the tools to once again preach from these important texts with confidence and relevancy.
For each of the twelve Minor Prophets, Elizabeth Achtemeier provides a wealth of information useful for preparing a sermon: recommended commentaries, historical context, theological context, and sections dealing with selected texts. These sections include (1) a brief treatment of linguistic and rhetorical features to note, (2) suggested sermon titles designed to arouse the interest of a congregation, and (3) homiletical exposition intended to stimulate preachers as they develop their sermons.
An excellent guide to the books of the Minor Prophets, this volume is unique for its theological depth, presented in clear and simple language for clergy and laity alike.

Foolishness Of Preaching A Print On Demand Title
$21.99What is the foundation of good preaching? How should preachers prepare themselves to faithfully and effectively address the church? And, just as importantly, what ought congregants, who come to church to hear a word from God, hope for from their preachers? These are often asked – and often answered – questions. But Robert Farrar Capon tackles them with a freshness and a frankness that make both the questions and the answers new.
In Part 1 of the book, “The Bedrock of Preaching,” Capon discusses how essential it is to have “a passion for the Passion” (to believe passionately in the Good News of salvation in Christ), how to overcome the stumbling blocks to genuinely accepting grace, and how to relinquish a false sense of control over our salvation. This part of the book also has important things to say to those of us who listen to sermons and who look to the pulpit for words of grace and hope that are truly meaningful to our lives today.
In Part 2, “The Practice of Preaching,” Capon concentrates on the mechanics of preaching in anything but a mechanical way. He begins by discussing the ingredients of preaching, emphasizing the importance of not just reading but really hearing the Word in the original Greek and Hebrew, and offers some pointed comments on the Common Lectionary. He then goes on to illustrate how to preach effectively from notes, giving specific, day-by-day suggestions for preparation. He also shows, using the full text of one of his sermons as an example, how to preach from a more fully written manuscript and explains how to move from first notes to final notes for a sermon, again using some of his own notes as an example.
In Capon’s creative hands these instructions are not just a nuts-and-bolts exercise; they are lively, challenging lessons in preaching that, for all their practical advice, never lose touch with the center of preaching and belief – the astonishing grace of Jesus Christ.

Starting Small Groups
$22.99In Starting Small Groups: Building Communities That Matter, Jeffrey Arnold discusses small groups and details step-by-step the method for designing a small-group ministry to fit a congregation’s unique situations. Adapted from a workbook format that allows each congregation to identify its own particular needs and character, this resource includes ways to plan, envision, and strategize for the formation of small groups.
The author looks at significant issues related to designing or revamping a small-group ministry, including group types; group structure; leadership training and support; marketing; recruiting people into groups; answering the why, when, how, and what of groups; and evaluating so that positive changes can be continually made. Ending each chapter is a series of workbook-style questions. The answers to these questions form the structure and content of each church’s unique ministry design. While individuals, committees, and churches work their way through the questions, they may consult the sample strategy contained in an appendix at the end of the book.
The writing style employed in this resource is simple, graphic, and easy to read. It is written so that both laypersons and pastors will be comfortable using it. Stories abound so that a process that may seem difficult comes to life in these pages.

Who Comes In The Name Of The Lord
$25.99In Who Comes in the Name of the Lord?, Harold J. Recinos advances the thesis that God has already prepared a future for mainline churches in Christ at the margins of society. That margin is the barrio — a contemporary Nazareth — judged by society as inferior, worthless, and productive of nothing good.
Drawing on the biblical witness, Recinos develops a perspective that shows that God identifies with those who are poor, marginal, weak, and lowly in society. God’s option for the lowly, he asserts, takes the form of incarnation in Jesus of Nazareth. God-in-Jesus is enfleshed in the history of an unimportant place known as Nazareth of Galilee. Nazareth, an inferior and worthless place, supports God on its barrio streets. Far from the Temple, on the town roads and with fisher-folk, Jesus first reveals in a fresh way the God of the poor and lowly.
The cultural role of mainline Christians, argues Recinos, is not to be guardians of society; rather, mainline Christians and their churches are to shape and amend their culture in response to the work of God in human history. That work is imaged by feasting with the uninvited people who are kept isolated from mainstream society, yet presuppose the reality of God. Thus, Recinos argues for a missional ecclesiology suggesting that local congregations are instruments of a sacred love that renews the world of uninvited guests and forgotten people. The true church, he says, does not meet the anguished cry of people at the margins of life with silence but with dikaioma (“a just action”) which assures shalom. The author then suggests several ways the local church can announce the reign of God and peace with justice, beginning in the barrio.
“Once again, Harold Recinos opens up the gospel for us from the perspective of the barrio, and in particular of those recent immigrants who have arrived at the barrio as refugees from situations of unspeakable violence and dehumanization. This is a hard-hitting book about a hard-hitting Jesus. Not recommended for those who are looking for a soft, other-worldly word of inspiration. But certainly required reading for any who wish to be faithful to Jesus in our contemporary society!” –Justo L. Gonzalez

Hard Questions Heart Answers
$22.00Bernice King, the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King, is an ordained minister, an attorney, and one of this country’s most admired speakers. As this remarkable collection of her sermons and speeches makes clear, she shares with her father a rare gift for oratory and the wisdom and compassion to inspire others.
The collection begins with words designed to “disturb the comfortable.” Tackling such controversial subjects as our disaffected youth, gun control, and the death penalty, King paints a compelling picture of the spiritual decay and deep-seated racism that infects our society. In the second part of the book, a selection of sermons focusing on “comforting the disturbed,” King’s belief in the power of faith to restore our communities, morally and spiritually, rings forth. The church, she asserts, must return to its helping and healing mission, and each of us, looking into our hearts, must put aside our differences and remember that each human life is precious.

Of Fiction And Faith A Print On Demand Title
$28.99Of Fiction and Faith features personal interviews with twelve of America’s most significant writers: Doris Betts, Frederick Buechner, Robert Olen Butler, Will Campbell, Elizabeth Dewberry, Clyde Edgerton, Denise Giardina, Robert Goldsborough, Jon Hassler, Garrison Keillor, Peggy Payne, and Walter Wangerin. Conducted over a five-year period, these interviews provide a window into the personal and literary lives of a company of writers whose work continues to defy categorization. These writers talk candidly about their careers, their audiences, their approaches to writing, and their attitudes toward issues of faith. Taken together, the interviews provide a perceptive analysis of contemporary literature and a challenge to the practice of labeling books as “Christian” or “secular.”
The volume also includes photographs, a brief introduction to each of the writers, and a chronological listing of their work. In addition to serving those who are fans of one or more of these writers, this book is also an excellent resource for those interested in finding quality fiction for personal reading.
