    Additional Info
At moments in history, individuals have embodied the gospel message with creativity and passion. One such moment began when a returned veteran named Francis Bernardone found a whole new world in a desolate space just outside Assisi: a leper colony. Drawn to discover the incarnate God, and joined by a collaborator as able and determined as he, Francis and Clare of Assisi’s desire to live authentically in gospel simplicity ushered in a revolutionary sensitivity to the presence of God within the human community.

Today, eight hundred years later, the first pope to take the name Francis invites us to engage the “revolution of tenderness” to which we are “summoned by the God who became flesh.” The example of Pope Francis gives us a new and vivid sense of just how compelling radical sincerity and reverent encounter with others can be. Capitalizing on the legacy of Francis and Clare and the energy of a visionary pope who raises critical questions about how to be faithful to the gospel, The Tenderness of God invites readers into a rich conversation across time and space about how to recapture our humanity and nurture our God-given capacity to live meaningfully and joyfully in communion with others.

  • Dual Reception : Eusebius And The Gospel Of Mark

    $49.00

The ending of Mark’s Gospel is one of the great unsolved mysteries. However, interest in the Markan conclusion is not a modern phenomenon alone. Comments about the different attested endings date back to Eusebius’s Ad Marinum in the fourth century. Responding to the apparent discrepancy between the timing of the resurrection in Matthew and Mark, Eusebius notes one may solve the difficulty in one of two ways: either ignore the passage on the basis of the manuscript evidence or harmonize the two passages. Unfortunately, Eusebius’s comments are all too often viewed through the lens of the modern text-critical endeavor, and for that reason, his intent has largely been missed.

A Dual Reception, a volume from the Emerging Scholars series, argues that Eusebius’s double solution can be read as recognizing the authority of both the Longer and the Abrupt Conclusions to Mark’s Gospel. The solution represents his ecumenical synthesis of those authors who preceded him, the “faithful and pious” from whom the Scriptures have been received. Only with this understanding of the double solution may we fully appreciate Eusebius’s dual reception, which is indicative of a different approach to the issue-one that prioritizes the question of reception over authorship, and one that is comfortable affirming a pluriform canon.

  • Grand Sweep : 365 Days From Genesis Through Revelation (Large Type)

    $29.99

Study the whole Bible in a year with J. Ellsworth Kalas. The Grand Sweep: 365 Days from Genesis through Revelation guides adults to read through the Bible in a year, reading three to four chapters daily. The Psalms and Proverbs are scattered throughout the reading as devotional elements. Because the plan moves through the Bible in biblical sequence, readers grasp the grand weep of the Scriptures–something missed in most Bible studies that take up only a certain book or section of the Bible. Also, daily readings are manageable; someone who is just beginning a serious devotional life need not feel threatened or inadequate. By the time readers finish their year of reading, they will have a grasp of the biblical story from beginning to end. And with it, because of the daily discipline, a stronger devotional life. Kalas also provides a faithful daily summary of each day’s reading, but with a devotional quality to encourage warmth of spirit as well as knowledge of mind. Congregations, study groups, and individuals can begin The Grand Sweep at any time during the year with this study. Allow at least 30 minutes daily when using this resource. Includes a reflection from son David Kalas and selected quotations from Kalas’s 35 books. The book includes: Questions or directions and daily devotional summary/commentary for Days 1-7 each week call for written response to the assigned Scripture and provide a devotional element. “Prayer Time” suggests a focus for daily and weekly praying and invites you to identify persons and concerns for prayer. “How the Drama Develops” summarizes the week’s Scripture and situates it in the ongoing biblical story. “Seeing Life Through Scripture” invites you to view life through the lens of Scripture in order to draw guidance and insights for living. Think of yourself in conversation with Scripture. “The Sum of It All” in a verse or verses, sums up the week’s Scripture. Over the course of fifty-two weeks, the verses become a synopsis of the biblical story.

The Grand Sweep is designed for personal use. The added component of a Leader Guide enables congregations and study groups to share the experience. It provides an overview of how to use the book as a study, along with specific content for weekly, monthly, or occasional group meetings.

  • Servant Of All

    $24.99

Biblical encouragement for pastors and Christian leaders who struggle with ambition

There is a deep tension between the biblical view of servant leaders and the status that Christian leaders today often desire and pursue. Many pastors and other church leaders, like it or not, struggle with ambition. In this book Craig Hill mines the New Testament to help Christian leaders deal with this issue honestly and faithfully.

Hill examines such passages as the Christ Hymn in Philippians 2 to show how New Testament authors helped early Christians construct their identity in ways that overturned conventional status structures and hierarchies. Status and ambition, Hill says, are not often addressed forthrightly in the church, as Christians either secretly indulge those impulses or feebly try to quash them. Hill’sServant of All will help Christian leaders reconcile their human aspirations and their spirituality, empowering them to minister with integrity.

The significance of the event at the end of the Gospel and the beginning of Acts have long been recognized. While select studies have focused on particular aspects of these accounts, however, the importance of the ascension to Luke-Acts calls for renewed attention to the narratological and theological significance of these accounts. Here, leading scholars discuss the ancient, literary and theological contexts of the ascent-into-heaven accounts for the next generation of interpreters.

  • Anomalous Jew : Paul Among Jews Greeks And Romans

    $31.99

Lively, well-informed portrait of the complex figure who was the apostle Paul

Though Paul is often lauded as the first great Christian theologian and a champion for Gentile inclusion in the church, in his own time he was universally regarded as a strange and controversial person. In this book Pauline scholar Michael Bird explains why.

An Anomalous Jew presents the figure of Paul in all his complexity with his blend of common and controversial Jewish beliefs and a faith in Christ that brought him into conflict with the socio-religious scene around him. Bird elucidates how the apostle Paul was variously perceived – as a religious deviant by Jews, as a divisive figure by Jewish Christians, as a purveyor of dubious philosophy by Greeks, and as a dangerous troublemaker by the Romans. Readers of this book will better understand the truly anomalous shape of Paul’s thinking and worldview.

But this feelingthis underlying sensation that pricks our national cognition with a constant needling, demanding to be fought against and yet powerful enough that it inspires hopeless demoralizationhas occurred before. From the Bohemian Reformation of John Wycliffe and Jan Hus in the 1300s to the Jesus People of the 60s and 70s, every era ripe with public dejection and faith-drought foreshadowed spiritual awakenings. These often began in the unlikeliest of places by the most inconceivable of personalities, and then spread like uncontrollable brushfires across the land resulting in millions surrendering their hearts and lives to the Lord. As todays world becomes more desperate to experience such personal meaning and social healing, the world is inadvertently moving toward another Great Awakening! What practices were employed that reformed traditional religious rituals into personal relationships with Christ, and how those methods are poised to be repeated in the near future. Why the age of social networking through virtual technology is keeping families and communities from real human relationships, how this relates to an international and spiritual hunger for revival, and how this very same technology will pave the way for an even vaster spreading of the Gospel.

Warren Carter addresses how New Testament writings construct their presentation of God using narrative and thematic approaches. Chapters will discuss Matthew’s Gospel, Luke-Acts, John’s Gospel (and letters), Paul, post-Pauline letters, Hebrews, and Revelation. In addition there will be a chapter on the Catholic Epistles. The author uses four questions to show how God is presented:
How is God presented in relation to Israel?
How is God presented in relation to Jesus and the Spirit?
How is God presented in relation to believers/disciples/the church?
How is God presented in relation to “the world” (both material creation and humanity)?
The approach is not to impose these questions, grid-like, on the material but to use them to surface the important factors of each writing’s emphases.

  • Unceasing Kindness : A Biblical Theology Of Ruth

    $28.99

The Old Testament book of Ruth is understandably a firm favorite in the church for small-group study and preaching: a heart-warming story of loyalty and love, a satisfying tale of a journey from famine to fullness. In the academy, the book has been a testing ground for a variety of hermeneutical approaches, and many different ways of interpreting it have been put forward. However, the single interpretative lens missing is the one that is most beneficial for the church: biblical theology. While commentaries have adopted a biblical-theological approach of one form or another, there has not been a detailed treatment of the themes in Ruth from that perspective. Lau and Goswell’s valuable New Studies in Biblical Theology volume aims to fill this gap. First, they focus on the meaning of the text as intended by the author for the original readers, but are mindful that the book is set within the wider context of Scripture. This context means not only the books surrounding Ruth in the canon, or even a particular section of Scripture, but also the rest of the Old Testament and the New Testament. Second, they discuss selected themes in Ruth, including redemption, kingship, mission, kindness, wisdom, famine, and the hiddenness of God. Within the overarching narrative of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, these themes can be viewed as different threads within the same cloth, or can be heard as different instrumental ‘voices’ within a symphony. Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.

The word spirituality is notoriously difficult to define. It is often used in a vague way to refer to the inner relationship between the self and God. The implication is that people only relate to God with their “inner” being (soul/spirit) and not with any other part of who they are.

There is a lurking influence of Neoplatonism within Christian thinking that tends to assume that the material is bad and the spiritual good, that there is a gaping hole between our inner and our outer selves and that the proper location of devotion is our inner being. There is a further assumption that, especially in the writings of Paul, the soul is to be placed in the “good” category while opposite it, in the “bad” category, is the body-leaving the question of what is meant by heart and mind largely ignored.

Paula Gooder here explores the meaning of six key concepts in the Bible, especially in the writings of Paul, before moving on to explore what Paul intended by the contrasts he drew, and what implications this all has for the way we think and speak about our spirituality today.

  • Paul Behaving Badly

The apostle Paul was kind of a jerk. He was arrogant and stubborn. He called his opponents derogatory, racist names. He legitimized slavery and silenced women. He was a moralistic, homophobic killjoy who imposed his narrow religious views on others. Or was he? Randolph Richards and Brandon O’Brien explore the complicated persona and teachings of the apostle Paul. Unpacking his personal history and cultural context, they show how Paul both offended Roman perspectives and scandalized Jewish sensibilities. His vision of Christian faith was deeply disturbing to others in his day and remains so in ours. Paul behaved badly, but not just in the ways we might think. Take another look at Paul and see why this “worst of sinners” dares to say, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”

There are chapters on its five main sections: the Pentateuch, the Historical Books, Poetry and Wisdom, the Prophetic Books, and the Apocrypha/Deutero-Canon. Each of the core chapters covers three areas: an introduction to the general significance of each section in its ancient context; a survey of major ways these sacred texts have been interpreted in the global history of Christianity; and suggestions for how its texts apply to Christian ministry and mission today. These areas are often treated separately by scholars, but this book usefully offers an integrated overview of these areas that will inform and inspire, and serve the interests and needs of students and general readers alike.

Israel’s poets and sages left a scriptural legacy that has powerfully shaped the worship, thoughts and actions of the people of God. In the highs and lows and crossroads of life, we instinctively turn to their poetry, proverbs and discourses for the language we do not possess and the wisdom we desperately seek. Yet there is more to this literature than meets the eye–or fills the momentary need. A study of the Bible’s wisdom and poetry will dramatically enhance its power and effectiveness. From the depths of lament to the heights of praise, from the eroticism of the Song of Songs to the hard realism of Ecclesiastes, and from the aphorisms of Proverbs to the discourses of Job, this guide introduces readers to the ancient background, the literary artistry, and the varied and timeless messages of the Psalms and Wisdom literature. Ernest C. Lucas gives us an informed, illuminating and interactive introduction to this portion of Scripture. Sparkling with interest and geared to the needs of students, this is an excellent textbook introduction to the Psalms and Wisdom literature.

The historical books, from Joshua to Ezra and Nehemiah, form the narrative backbone of the Old Testament. Without them the Pentateuch would stop cold and the Prophets would hang in suspension. Even the Psalms and Wisdom literature would lose some of their luster for lack of a setting. Without these historical books the New Testament would be resolving an incomplete narrative, answering a question only half and hesitantly posed. For all these reasons and more, it is a tragic fact that many of us today cannot give a brief and coherent account of this story. We fear that books with names like Judges, Kings and Chronicles would bore us. But nothing could be further from the truth. For the story they tell is full of action and intrigue, tragedy and suspense, vivid characters and memorable events. They are the stuff of great art and literature, and they have inspired men and women to lives and deeds of uncommon faith and courage. Exploring these books is essential for a true education, whether religious or otherwise. In this guidebook, Philip E. Satterthwaite and J. Gordon McConville introduce us to the content and the context of these historical books. We view them within the setting of ancient history and history writing, and come to appreciate their literary artistry, their role within the Scriptures of Israel, and their lasting value as theological and ethical resources. The male is in crisis. Traditional roles once gave men stability and continuity from generation to generation. Today, the world is sending out conflicting signals about what it means to be a man. Many men are questioning who they are and what roles they fulfill in life-as a male, a husband, and a father-leaving them frustrated and causing them to live far below their potential. Best-selling author Dr. Myles Munroe examines cultural attitudes toward men and addresses critical issues such as:
*How can men gain their footing in the ever-shifting environment of cultural expectations?
*What does it mean to be male?
*What definition of masculinity should men adopt?
*What roles should men fulfill-in the workplace and in the home?
*What do gender roles have to do with the male’s purpose?
*What are the differences between males and females?
*How are men and women meant to relate to one another?
*How can a man build a better life for himself, his family, and the world?

When men understand the purpose God has given them and the true design of their relationship with women, they will be free to fulfill their destiny and potential. Expanded edition with study guide material included.

On the one hand there is the soaring imagination and evocative phrasing of passage after passage in this magnificent book. But on the other hand there is the challenge of fitting the book together and grasping with confidence the referents Isaiah has in mind. In a well-written and remarkably comprehensive treatment, Andrew Abernethy takes us through the book of Isaiah by unfolding the way God and his kingdom are presented in each of the three major sections of the prophecy. By outlining the way this reigning God uses agents to accomplish his purpose, this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume identifies the links to the broader biblical canon and ultimately to Jesus.

  • Celebrating The Law

Christians often see the Old Testament law as out of date and irrelevant now that Christ has come. Lalleman rejects this view and makes the case for the ongoing importance of the Law in the Christian life something to celebrate. Most helpfully, Lalleman sets out a model for interpretating Old Testament laws in the context of the whole of the Bible. She interacts with the scholarly literature on the subject in a very readable way and provides some basic biblical principles for integrating the whole of God’s word in our lives. Lalleman then fleshes out these principles by applying them to three difficult topics in Old Testament law food laws, the cancellation of debts, and warfare. At the heart of this celebration of the law, she contends, is the wholeness, holiness, and integrity of God himself.

  • What A Difference A Meal Makes

    $16.99

“Biblical scholar Christian Eberhart unpacks the words of institution of Christian communion services by explaining how first-century Christians would have understood “This is my body, this is my blood.” Using a conversational style, Professor Eberhart makes his extensive scholarship accessible to a non-academic audience. Readers will find their own experience of communion deepened after reading this book.”
Rev. Dr. Priscilla Eppinger, Professor of Religion, Community of Christ Seminary at Graceland University

All Christians know that Jesus instituted a celebration with bread and wine. It has various different names, such as Last Supper, Lord’s Supper, Communion, or Eucharist. Why do Christians today still participate in this celebration? What is its meaning? And what does it tell us about the ministry of Jesus Christ?

This book answers these questions by looking closely at the foundational texts in the Bible. It is an invitation to first study relevant New Testament texts on the Last Supper of Jesus. From there the quest for meaning continues to the Old Testament where topics such as Passover, sacrificial rituals, and atonement are investigated. These texts offer decisive clues on how to comprehend forgiveness of sins that is effective during the Last Supper. Moreover, this book shows that the celebration which Jesus instituted was a ritualized meal. Therefore it explores social functions of communal meals in Greco-Roman antiquity. Thus the Last Supper emerges as a powerful symbol that is still relevant today, conveying the love of God and the ideal of an inclusive society.

  • Has The Bible Been Changed

Muslims all over the world are ignoring the message of the New Testament because their teachers say its text has been corrupted. Yet very few of them have checked to see whether what their teachers say is true.
    – David Byle, chairman of the Bible Correspondence Course in Turkey (bccturkey.org)
What does it take to persuade an entire Islamic nation to recall and rewrite their religious education materials in order to no longer teach that the Bible has been changed? Only one thing: the Qur’an itself. The Qur’an clearly states that the Bible has not been changed and, even more shockingly, says that anyone who teaches that the Bible has been changed is in fact doomed to hell.

This book, “Has the Bible Been Changed?, ” was the reason that in 1996 the Department of Religious Affairs in Turkey recalled their existing teaching materials. As you explore these pages, you will see exactly what the Qur’an says that is so powerful that even Islamic leaders are caused to reverse course. But this book is not persuasive with many words. Rather, it shows the reader Scripture verses and other pertinent facts that will help lead one to the ultimate Truth, that there is indeed only one God, and the way to Him is through His Son, Jesus Christ. It behooves you to read this book to know that you can put your faith and confidence in the entire Bible, that it is indeed the unchangeable, inerrant Word of God.

  • Have We Missed The Second Coming

    $16.99

    Victorious Hope Publishing
A new and growing aberration in evangelical prophecy circles is the view that the Second Coming of Christ occurred at the destruction of the Jewish Temple in AD 70. Many Christians are being confused because of the similar language used in Scripture to refer to Jesus’s return at the end of history which also applies to the temple’s destruction. This new movement has developed a cult-like zeal and is causing trouble in many local churches and confusion among numerous Christians. This book demonstrates the error of the “Hyper-preterist” viewpoint. This error teaches that: (1) Christ returned at the judgment of the temple; (2) the resurrection occurred at that time (and there is no future bodily resurrection); (3) that AD 70 was the Final Judgment spoken of by Christ and the Apostles; and (4) that history will never end.

  • His Love Endures Forever

God is love-there are few more quoted statements from all of Scripture. Although wonderfully simple, the idea that God is fundamentally loving is incredibly profound. And yet, sometimes we confuse God’s love with our human understanding of love-an understanding that is inherently imperfect, sometimes self-serving, and often fickle. Helping us walk in the belief that God is love-not that love is God-this book explores what the Bible actually teaches about how and what God loves. Readers will discover that, although we often misunderstand, misuse, and take for granted God’s love, it’s actually more wonderful, pure, and satisfying than we ever imagined.

The book stands on four arguments: that the gospel is defined by the apostles in 1 Corinthians 15 as the completion of the Story of Israel in the saving Story of Jesus; that the gospel is found in the Four Gospels; that the gospel was preached by Jesus; and that the sermons in the Book of Acts are the best example of gospeling in the New Testament. The King Jesus Gospel ends with practical suggestions about evangelism and about building a gospel culture.

This is a clear and well-argued work for the authenticity of 2 Thessalonians. Following a critical examination of the history of the dispute, the author examines the life and epistle of the earliest external witness, Polycarp, to show that 2 Thessalonians was accepted as authentically Pauline about AD 90. Through a careful reading of the letter MacDougall demonstrates that ‘tradition’ (2 Thess. 2:15; 3:6) is a characteristic of the undisputed letters of Paul, that the doctrinal content – eschatology and imitation – is Pauline, and that the letter’s style is authentic. A rigorous defence of the letter is long overdue. MacDougall provides a seminal work on the subject.

  • Old Testament Theology 3

In this third volume of his critically acclaimed Old Testament Theology John Goldingay explores the Old Testament vision of Israel’s life before God. The first volume focused on the story of God’s dealings with Israel, or Israel’s gospel. The second volume investigated the beliefs of Israel, or Israel’s faith. Now the spotlight falls on the Old Testament’s perspective on the life that Israel should live in its present and future, including its worship, prayer and spirituality, as well as its practices, attitudes and ethics before God. Goldingay sees three spheres of life giving order to Israel’s vision: its life in relation to God, its life in community and the life of the individual as a self. Within these frameworks he unfurls a tapesetry that is as broad and colorful as all of life, and yet detailed in its intricate attention to the text. With this final volume John Goldingay has given us the third pillar of an Old Testament theology that is monumental in scope and yet invites us to enter through multiple doors to explore its riches. Students will profit from a semester in its courts, and ministers of the Word will find their preaching and teaching deeply enriched by wandering its halls and meditating in its chambers.

Old Testament Theology: Israel’s Faith is the second of John Goldingay’s magisterial three-volume Old Testament Theology. The award-winning first volume, Old Testament Theology: Israel’s Gospel, followed the story line of the First Testament, developing its narrative theology. This volume finds its point of departure in the Prophets, Psalms and Wisdom literature, where we encounter a more discursive thinking that is closer to traditional theology. Whereas the first volume followed the epochal divine acts of Israel’s “gospel” narrative, here Goldingay sets out the faith of Israel under the major rubrics of God Israel The Nightmare The Vision The World The Nations Humanity In a style that cleaves closely to the text, Goldingay offers up a masterful exposition of the faith of the First Testament, one born of living long with the text and the refined skill of asking interesting questions and listening with trained attention. Never one to sacrifice a close hearing of a text for an easy generality, or to mute a discordant note for the sake of reassuring harmony, Goldingay gives us an Old Testament theology shot through with the edge-of-the-seat vitality of discovery. The first volume ofOld Testament Theology has triggered lively discussion in the academy. This volume too will be welcomed and discussed by scholars. But its fresh presentations of theological motifs, as well as its engagement with contemporary contexts, will also greatly enrich the treasury of insights this series makes available to preachers and communicators of the Old Testament.

  • Women Of War Women Of Woe

    $38.99

This volume gathers the writings of thirty-five nineteenth-century women on the stories of women in Joshua and Judges. Recovering and analyzing neglected works by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and many others, Women of War, Women of Woe illuminates the biblical text, recovers a neglected chapter of reception history, and helps us understand and apply Scripture in our present context.

The stories of Rahab, Deborah, Jael, Delilah, Manoah’s wife, Achsah, Jephthah’s daughter, and the Levite’s concubine raised thorny questions for these female biblical interpreters – questions that they addressed candidly in their writings. Could a Victorian woman use her intelligence to negotiate like Rahab? Was the seemingly well-educated Deborah an appropriate role model? Or did Jephthah’s daughter more correctly model a pious woman’s life as she submitted to her father’s vow? The voices collected in this book offer thoughtful reflection on and responses to these questions and more.

  • Saving The Bible From Ourselves

    $24.99

Does the Bible need to be saved? Over the course of the centuries, Bible scholars and publishers have increasingly added “helps” chapter divisions, verses, subheads, notes to the Bible in an effort to make it easier to study and understand. In the process, however, these have led to sampling Scripture rather than reading deeply. According to author Glenn R. Paauw, the text has become divorced from the Bible’s literary and historical context, leading to misinterpretation and a “narrow, individualistic and escapist view of salvation.” Rather than being a culture-shaping force, the Bible has become a database of quick and easy answers to life’s troubling questions. But these deficiencies can be corrected by engaging in what the author calls “big readings.” In these pages Paauw introduces us to seven new (to us) understandings of the Bible as steps on the path to recovering one deeply engaged Bible. With each “new” Bible presented, deficiencies in how we currently interact with the Bible are explored, followed by recommendations for a new practice. The Bible’s transformative power is recovered when we remove the chains Christians have applied to it over the centuries. The Bible does not need to be saved because of any defect in itself, but because we have distorted and misread it.Saving the Bible from Ourselves provides students of the Bible a new paradigm for reading and living the Bible well.”

Presents a doctrine of Scripture based on Hebrews in dialogue with Augustine and Calvin

What vision of biblical authority arises from Scripture’s own use of Scripture? This question has received surprisingly little attention from theologians seeking to develop a comprehensive doctrine of Scripture. Today When You Hear His Voice by Gregory W. Lee fills this gap by listening carefully to the Epistle to the Hebrews.

Lee illuminates the unique way that Hebrews appropriates Old Testament texts as he considers the theological relationship between salvation history and scriptural interpretation. He illustrates these dynamics through extended treatments of Augustine and Calvin, whose contrasting perspectives on the covenants, Israel, and the literal and figural senses provide theological categories for appreciating how Hebrews innovatively presents Scripture as God’s direct address in the contemporary moment.

Money mattered to the apostle Paul. One economic endeavor of signal importance for Paul was the monetary fund that he organized among the largely Gentile congregations of his mission for the Jewish-Christian community in Jerusalem.David J. Downs investigates this offering from a variety of angles. He begins with an attempt to piece together a relative chronological account, based primarily on information from Paul’s epistles, of the apostle’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the Jerusalem church. After reconstructing this complex story, Downs examines the socio-cultural context of the collection, focusing on analogous forms of giving among ancient pagan and Jewish voluntary associations, including practices of benefaction, common funds, care for the poor, and translocal economic links among these associations. With this chronological and socio-cultural context in mind, the author then explores Paul’s use of several cultic metaphors to frame the contribution as a religious offering consecrated to God. Drawing on recent work in the field of metaphor theory, Downs contends that Paul metaphorically frames his readers’ responsive participation in the collection as an act of cultic worship, thus underscoring the point that the fulfillment of mutual obligations within the community of believers results in praise, not human benefactors, but to God, the one from whom all benefactions come. This rhetorical strategy suggests that even the very human action of raising money for those in material need originates in the grace ( charis ) of God and will eventuate in thanksgiving ( charis ) to God (2 Cor 9:14-15).

What Do All Christians Believe? For many people, words like doctrine and theology cause their eyes to glaze over, or they find them difficult to understand and struggle to see how they are relevant to daily life. In Core Christianity, author, pastor, and theologian Mike Horton tackles the essential and basic beliefs that all Christians share. What is core to the Christian faith? In addition to unpacking these beliefs in a way that is easy to understand, Horton shows why they matter to our lives today. This introduction to the basic doctrines of Christianity is a helpful guide by a respected theologian and a popular author, and it includes discussion questions for individual or group use. Core Christianity is perfect for those who are new to the faith, as well as those who have an interest in deepening in their understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

All too often, argues Ben Witherington, the theology of the New Testament has been divorced from its ethics, leaving as isolated abstractions what are fully integrated, dynamic elements within the New Testament itself. As Witherington stresses, “behavior affects and reinforces or undoes belief.” In this paperback edition of The Indelible Image, Volume 2, Witherington offers the second of a two-volume set on the theological and ethical thought world of the New Testament. The first volume looks at the individual witnesses, while the second examines the collective witness. The New Testament, says Ben Witherington, is “like a smallish choir. All are singing the same cantata, but each has an individual voice and is singing its own parts and notes. If we fail to pay attention to all the voices in the choir, we do not get the entire effect. . . . If this first volume is about closely analyzing the sheet music left to us by which each musician’s part is delineated, the second volume will attempt to re-create what it might have sounded like had they ever gotten together and performed their scores to produce a single masterful cantata.” What the New Testament authors have in mind, Witherington contends, is that all believers should be conformed in thought, word and deed to the image of Jesus Christ-the indelible image.

The book of Acts is a remarkable fusion of the historical and theological, and its account of the early church has fascinated theologians and biblical scholars for centuries. Just who was the author of this work? And what kind of book did he write? How do we classify its genre? The Acts of the Apostles provides an advanced introduction to the study of Acts, covering important questions about authorship, genre, history and theology. Osvaldo Padilla explores fresh avenues of understanding by examining the text in light of the most recent research on the book of Acts itself, philosophical hermeneutics, genre theory and historiography. In addition, Padilla opens a conversation between the text of Acts and postliberal theology, seeking a fully-orbed engagement with Acts that is equally attuned to questions of interpretation, history and theology.

“At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD” (Genesis 4:26 ESV). From this first mention of prayer in the Bible, right through to the end, when the church prays “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20), prayer is intimately linked with the gospel?God’s promised and provided solution to the problem of human rebellion against him and its consequences. After defining prayer simply as “calling on the name of the Lord,” Gary Millar follows the contours of the Bible’s teaching on prayer. His conviction is that even careful readers can often overlook significant material because it is deeply embedded in narrative or poetic passages where the main emphases lie elsewhere. Millar’s initial focus is on how “calling on the name of the Lord” to deliver on his covenantal promises is the foundation for all that the Old Testament says about prayer. Moving to the New Testament, he shows how this is redefined by Jesus himself, and how, after his death and resurrection, the apostles understood “praying in the name of Jesus” to be the equivalent new covenant expression. Throughout the Bible, prayer is to be primarily understood as asking God to deliver on what he has already promised?as Calvin expressed it, “through the gospel our hearts are trained to call on God’s name” (Institutes 3.20.1). This New Studies in Biblical Theology volume concludes his valuable study with an afterword offering pointers to application to the life of the church today.

  • How To Read The Bible

    $18.99

Renowned religion expert and Harvard Divinity School professor Harvey Cox deepens our experience of the Bible, revealing the three primary ways we read it, why each is important, and how we can integrate these approaches for a richer understanding and appreciation of key texts throughout the Old and New Testaments.

The Bible is the heart of devotional practice, a source of guidance and inspiration rich with insightful life lessons. On the other side of the spectrum, academics have studied the Bible using scientific analysis to examine its historical significance and meaning. The gap between these readings has resulted in a schism with far-reaching implications: Without historical context, ordinary people are left to interpret the Bible literally, while academic readings overlook the deeply personal connections established in church pews, choir benches, and backyard study groups.

In How To Read the Bible, Cox explores three different lenses commonly used to bring the Bible into focus:

    Literary-as narrative stories of family conflict, stirring heroism, and moral dilemmas;
    History-as classic texts with academic and theological applications;
Activism-as a source of dialogue and engagement to be shared and applied to our lives.
By bringing these together, Cox shows the Bible in all its rich diversity and meaning and offers us a contemporary activist version that wrestles with issues of feminism, war, homosexuality, and race. The result is a living resource that is perpetually evolving as our understanding changes and deepens from generation to generation.

  • Justification : Gods Plan And Pauls Vision

    $32.99

Few issues are more central to the Christian faith than the nature, scope and means of salvation. Many have thought it to be largely a transaction that gets one to heaven. In this riveting book, N. T. Wright explains that God’s salvation is radically more than this. At the heart of much vigorous debate on this topic is the term the apostle Paul uses in several of his letters to describe what happens to those in Christ-justification. Paul uses this dramatic image from the law court to declare that Christians are acquitted of the cosmic accusations against them. But justification goes beyond this in Paul’s writings to offer a vision of God’s future for the whole world as well as for his people. Here in one place Wright now offers a comprehensive account and defense of his perspective on this crucial doctrine. He provides a sweeping overview of the central points in the debate before launching into a thorough explanation of the key texts in Paul’s writings. While fully cognizant of tradition and controversy, the final authority for his conclusions is the letters of Paul themselves. Along the way Wright responds to critics, such as John Piper, who have challenged what has come to be called the New Perspective. For Wright, what Paul means by justification is nothing less than God’s unswerving commitment to the covenant promise he made to bless the whole world through Abraham and his family. This irenic response is an important contribution for those on both sides of the debate-and those still in between-to consider. Whether you’re a fan of Wright’s work or have read his critics and would like to know the other side of the story, here is a chance to interact with Wright’s views on the issues at stake and form your own conclusions.

Was Jesus ever married? Yes, indeed, says Addison Hodges Hart – but not in the way that recent sensationalist writers have claimed. In this book Hart opens an illuminating window into John’s Gospel as he explores its rich, poetic imagery, particularly the metaphorical significance of “the Woman.”

Inspired by the writings of early church fathers and medieval theologians, Hart presents the Gospel of John as an incarnational, sacramental text and shows that it is primarily a revelation of salvation, deeply mystical and intended to lead its readers into a living relationship with the one who is the Bridegroom of his people.

    $34.50

Most people associate the term “Samaritan” exclusively with the New Testament stories about the Good Samaritan and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Very few are aware that a small community of about 750 Samaritans still lives today in Palestine and Israel; they view themselves as the true Israelites, having resided in their birthplace for thousands of years and preserving unchanged the revelation given to Moses in the Torah.

Reinhard Pummer, one of the world’s foremost experts on Samaritanism, offers in this book a comprehensive introduction to the people identified as Samaritans in both biblical and nonbiblical sources. Besides analyzing the literary, epigraphic, and archaeological sources, he examines the Samaritans’ history, their geographical distribution, their version of the Pentateuch, their rituals and customs, and their situation today. There is no better book available on the subject.

  • Jesus The Priest

Following his critically acclaimed book Jesus the Temple, Nicholas Perrin here offers an insightful theological contribution to Jesus studies that synthesizes the best in traditional/conservative and liberal reconstructions of Jesus’s life and teaching. Some view Jesus as an eschatological prophet (conservative tradition) while others view him as a teacher of wisdom (liberal tradition). Perrin identifies the priesthood of Jesus as a mediating understanding that sheds crucial light on the kingdom of God. By viewing Jesus as priest, we understand that the central aim of God’s kingdom is not the salvation of individual souls or the creation of a better society but rather the establishment of authentic worship.

  • Not With Wisdom Of Words

    $25.99

  • Gospel Of John

    $11.95

Church tradition maintains that John, the last of Jesus’ disciples left alive, wrote his gospel from the Island of Patmos at the end of a long life. Was his memory still vigorous and clear? Was he tempted to enhance events or even introduce miraculous ones in order to present a more appealing Jesus? Are there inconsistencies between John’s narrative and the other gospels that suggest that all of them may have historic inaccuracies? These are questions frequently asked.

On the other hand, if Jesus was simply a good teacher who performed no authentic miracles, why did it take three years to arrest and convict him? What made the authorities hesitate? And if the gospels are partially exaggerated or fictionalized, why are they so candidly unflattering about the failings of Jesus’ followers? These are questions not frequently asked.

Stuart Hayes has advanced degrees in both science and divinity, so he brings a rigorous but respectful approach to the gospel of John. This book combining reflection and commentary is intentionally written with laypeople in mind using careful, but commonsense thought. That is not to say it will be dismissed by, or is dismissive of, the work of scholars. Instead, it is a book written to people genuinely wrestling with doubts about the authenticity of the work of the gospel writers that often go unaddressed by, or made inaccessible by scholars. In an unusual approach, this book examines John’s Gospel to find internal evidences of historical dependability and also reconciles passages where skeptics think there are errors. There has been much valuable and helpful work examining the historicity of scripture using both textual criticism and higher criticism. However, there is a need for a careful reading and reflection of the gospels themselves, by themselves, in order to uncover and focus on internal authenticities in the narratives.

  • Using The Bible In Spiritual Direction

    $28.95

Spiritual direction is increasingly popular among Christians of all mainstream traditions, with demand for directors outstripping supply in many places. And although the Bible is central to the practice of spiritual direction, very little has been published on how best to use it in this form of ministry.Experienced spiritual director Liz Hoare explores the central role the Bible has played in Christian experience, in order to discourage poor, shallow or rigid use of the Bible, which can lead to damage and inhibit spiritual growth.According to Hoare, the goal of spiritual direction is not a personal improvement plan but a people who are being shaped into the likeness of Christ, for the flourishing of the church as a whole. Using different methods of praying with the Bible and drawing on historical traditions of Christian spirituality, as well as current literature and practice, this book offers a rich, stimulating, and thoroughly biblical resource for all those who give and receive spiritual direction.
