Was the apostle Paul using hyperbole in calling himself the “worst of sinners” when writing to Timothy just before his death? What does Paul tell us today about about free will, repentance, grace, election, and forgiveness?

How does God take away our hearts of stone and remove the veils from our eyes so that we can see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ? Is there truly anyone beyond the reach of God’s amazing love? Is there anyone that God allows us to refuse to forgive? Can one who has turned his or her back on Jesus be brought back to salvation?

Exploring these questions and more, The Worst of Sinners presents a retelling of the story of Saul and his conversion outside the walls of Damascus. The tale askes us this critical question; Can we follow the royal law found in Scripture, “love your neighbor as yourself” when your own heart is filled with anger, guilt and shame? “I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.”

These words, written by the apostle Paul to a first-century Christian named Philemon, are tantalizingly brief. Indeed, Paul’s epistle to Philemon is one of the shortest books in the entire Bible. While it’s direct enough in its way, it certainly leaves plenty to the imagination. A Week in the Life of a Slave is a vivid imagining of that story. From the pen of an accomplished New Testament scholar, the narrative follows the slave Onesimus from his arrival in Ephesus, where the apostle Paul is imprisoned, and fleshes out the lived context of that time and place, supplemented by numerous sidebars and historical images. John Byron’s historical fiction is at once a social and theological critique of slavery in the Roman Empire and a gripping adventure story, set against the exotic backdrop of first-century Ephesus.

Son of the Father is a modern storytelling of Barabbas, the man released in the hours leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion.

Long before his life is traded for Jesus’, Barrabas’ family is ruined, a consequence of his own rage. Consumed with guilt he resolves to put things right, but this seems an impossible task. Huge debts, a man bent on revenge, theft, and murder hang above his head.

As Barrabas struggles to atone and restore his family’s honor and to bring himself out of poverty, he meets the new religious teacher. Barabbas can’t bring himself to trust this wandering preacher even though his family follows Him, until Barabbas’ life is spared, costing more than he thought possible.

In this thought-provoking and gripping novel by debut author Andrew Stone, readers will discover a much deeper meaning as the lives of Barabbas and Jesus intertwine between the pages and weave a story of love and sacrifice.

  • Behold The Man

    $17.99

Behold the Man is the culmination of the Jerusalem Chronicles and brings readers to an encounter with the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. How could Jesus-who preached righteousness before God, and love and mercy toward neighbors-be so hated and pursued? To the Temple officials, he was a threat to the livelihood and authority of the priesthood. To Herod Antipas, he was a threat to his ambition to be the King of the Jews. And to the Roman overlords, he was seen as a dangerous threat; a man who commanded an army of the common people. He could heal wounds, offer miraculous provisions, and even raise from the dead. If Jesus had accepted popular acclaim and become an earthly king, he would have been unstoppable. Jesus’s last days are explored through three people who interacted with him: Governor Pilate, for whom Judea will either make or break his career; Pilate’s wife, Claudia, desperately seeking aid for her much loved, crippled son; and Centurion Marcus Longinus, caught in the middle between loyalty to the Empire, love for Claudia, and an ever-increasing belief in Jesus as the Son of God. After encountering Jesus, none of them will ever be the same.

The Untold Story of Noah’s Wife
    By Rebecca Kanner
reading group guidecustomer reviewsIn the spirit of Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent comes an extraordinary debut novel that breathes life into Noah’s wife and combines history and mythology in an intensely suspenseful, page-turning narrative.

The Bible neglects to give her a name, but in this ambitious, intricately woven novel, Rebecca Kanner gives Noah’s wife a voice and a rich, complex emotional life.

Cursed with a prominent birthmark on her face that many think is the mark of a demon, she is reviled by everyone except her father. To keep her safe, he gives his virtuous daughter to the ancient and righteous Noah who takes her to the town of Sorum, a land of outcasts and pariahs.

Though the 600-year old Noah prospers there, his wife is more alone than ever, living with an aloof husband who speaks more to God than with her, trying to make friends with the violent townsfolk and raising three sons who have developed some sinful tendencies themselves. When God tells Noah to build an ark so that he, his wife, three sons, and their three wives can repopulate the earth after the flood, her trials only multiply.

Not since The Red Tent has a novel so brilliantly illuminated the plight of forgotten Biblical women. Through her protagonist’s eyes, Rebecca Kanner explores the blurring lines between right and wrong as one woman struggles to find purpose and identity in a drowning world.

  • Iscariot : A Novel Of Judas

    $17.99

Acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Tosca Lee brilliantly adapts the life of Judas Iscariot into a dazzling work of fiction-humanizing the man whose very name is synonymous with betrayal.

Based on extensive research into the life and times of Judas Iscariot, this triumph of fiction storytelling by the author of Havah: The Story of Eve revisits one of biblical history’s most maligned figures and brings the world he inhabited vividly to life.

In Jesus, Judas believes he has found the One-the promised Messiah and future king of the Jews, destined to overthrow Roman rule. Galvanized, he joins the Nazarene’s followers, ready to enact the change he has waited for all his life. But soon Judas’s vision of a nation free from Rome is crushed by the inexplicable actions of the Nazarene himself, who will not bow to social or religious convention-who seems, in the end, to even turn against his own people. At last, Judas must confront the fact that the master he loves is not the liberator he hoped for, but a man bent on a drastically different agenda.

Iscariot is the story of Judas, from his tumultuous childhood to his emergence as the man known to the world as the betrayer of Jesus. But even more, it is a singular and surprising view into the life of Jesus that forces us to reexamine everything we thought we knew about the most famous-and infamous-religious icons in history.

One method of enjoying reading the Bible is to live the events as one reads them by becoming an observer or a participant in those events. In this novel, the author became “James,” the lad who was carrying five loaves of bread and two fish which Jesus blessed to feed over five thousand people. From that perspective, he followed James’s growth in love of Jesus Christ. Through listening to Jesus’ teachings, observing His miraculous deeds, following Him on the way to the cross, and hearing the news of His resurrection from the dead, James developed his understanding of who Jesus is. First, he thought of Him as a prophet, the Messiah, and finally he believed that He is the Son of God. At a mature age, James wrote his memoirs, from the first time he met Jesus, to the time he was preparing to leave on his first missionary trip to preach the Way. Although the miracle of feeding the crowd happened almost one year before Jesus was crucified and resurrected, the novel is developed to present to the reader other important events that happened prior to that miracle. Prophecies of the Old Testament were incorporated in the body of the story as they were being fulfilled. The Bible events in the novel are real. James is an imaginary figure whom the author followed in his growth in the love and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

  • Giants In The Earth

    $15.99

“There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them…” Gen. 6:4 (KJV) It didn’t take long after creation before Satan, in his jealousy toward the newly created humans, found a way to manipulate them into trading perfection for the death that comes through sin. But God still loved them anyway. Satan vowed to find a way to destroy them himself, so he charged one of his most devious minions, Azazel, with two tasks to reach his goal. He was to teach the humans war and corrupt the human bloodlines. This led to the birth of the Nephilim; giants who were to wreak havoc on the people of the earth. Standing in his way was Enoch, a man who “walked with God.” When Azazel devises a plan to kill him, he discovers that he is up against an obstacle even larger than his giant sons; the immovable faith of Enoch and his son, Methuselah. With the help of the Creator and a few giant friends of their own, they are able to triumph over colossal evil in this action-packed adventure set during the pre-flood era of the earth.

  • Healings : Three Stories Of Miraculous Healing From Scripture

    $22.99

I have always wondered why the Bible does not give names to certain of its characters. Scripture would stress “a certain man” instead of naming the man, or not give names to the people the Lord Jesus healed. It is noted that some names were of importance to the stories, while others only needed to be acknowledged as those who were healed.

For instance, Naaman the Syrian leper had an unnamed wife. The nameless leper who was healed (along with nine other men) returned to say thanks to Jesus for his miraculous healing. We know that nothing is said about him after his healing. There is also the man healed beside the pool at Bethesda by Jesus and, again, what happened to him after the priests and scribes questioned his healing on the Sabbath?

Hence, in the first story, Naaman’s wife and her little maid now have names and a history. In the second story, I continued the leper’s story as he relates it years later to his daughter-in-law. The third story gives a bit more insight to the character of the man who was healed by Jesus at the Pool of Bethzatha.

  • Gaius Diary : The Continuing Saga Of One Mans Impact On The Early Christian

    $12.95

In this gripping narrative we hear of many historical events that cause perilous times for the fledgling church. Gaius tells of the fall of Jerusalem and the martyrdom of Christians torn apart by wild animals in the Colosseum and of others perishing as human torches in Nero’s garden. Near the end of the book Paul’s own death is very movingly described. His friends shout encouragement as Paul approaches his execution:
We will fight the good fight…as did you. We will carry on!
Despite seemingly overwhelming persecution, the church survives and successfully incorporated Gentile and Jewish Christians with the incredible shepherding of two apostles: Paul (founder of many Gentile churches) and Peter (Jesus’ disciple and head of the Jerusalem church).

  • Martha : A Novel

    $17.00

Perhaps one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented characters of the New Testament is Martha. Often painted in the colors of reproach, Martha seems to be the poster child for how not to be a follower of Jesus. From the mind of Diana Wallis Taylor comes this touching, well-researched portrayal of Martha of Bethany, sister of Mary and Lazarus. Through Taylor’s lush descriptions and inspired combination of imagined and recorded dialogue, Martha’s world–her trials, triumphs, and loves–vibrantly comes to life. Follow Martha as she is jilted by her betrothed, falls in love with a Roman soldier, grieves the death of her father, cares for her siblings, and serves her Lord with dignity and grace. Readers will never read the biblical story of Martha the same way again.

Who was the woman at the well and why was she shunned by her entire community? When her well was empty, her Savior came to fill her with living water. Their stories have been told for two thousand years leaving audiences pondering their circumstances and choices before Jesus came into their lives. Janette Oke has dreamed for years of retelling a story in a biblical time frame from a female protagonist’s perspective, and Davis Bunn is elated to be working with her again on this sweeping saga of the dramatic events surrounding the birth of Christianity … and the very personal story of Leah, a young Jewess of mixed heritage trapped in a vortex of competing political agendas and private trauma.

Caught up in the maelstrom following the death of an obscure rabbi in the Roman backwater of first-century Palestine, Leah finds herself also engulfed in her own turmoil-facing the prospect of an arranged marriage to a Roman soldier, Alban, who seems to care for nothing but his own ambitions. Head of the garrison near Galilee, he has been assigned by Palestine’s governor to ferret out the truth behind rumors of a political execution gone awry. Leah’s mistress, the governor’s wife, secretly commissions Leah also to discover what really has become of this man whose death-and missing body-is causing such furor.

This epic drama is threaded with the tale of an unlikely romance and framed with dangers and betrayals from unexpected sources. At its core, The Centurion’s Wife unfolds the testing of loyalties-between two young people whose inner searchings they cannot express, between their irreconcilable heritages, and ultimately between their humanity and the Divine they yearn to encounter.
