After Paul Left Corinth A Print On Demand Title
$33.99Add to cartAfter Paul Left Corinth gathers for the first time all the relevant extant material from literary, nonliterary, and archaeological sources on what life was like in the first-century Roman colony of Corinth. Using this evidence, Bruce Winter not only opens a fascinating vista on day-to-day living in the Graeco-Roman world but, more importantly, helps us understand what happened to the Christian community after Paul left Corinth. As Winter shows, the origin of many of the problems Paul dealt with in 1 Corinthians can be traced to culturally determined responses to aspects of life in Corinth.
The significance of the role that culture played in the life of the Corinthian Christians has either been ignored or underestimated in explaining the reasons for their difficulties after Paul left. Winter first examines the extent to which Paul communicated alternative ways of behaving while he was in Corinth. Winter then explores the social changes that occurred in Corinth after Paul left. Severe grain shortages, the relocation of the Isthmian Games, the introduction of a new federal imperial cult, the withdrawal of kosher meat from the official market_all of these cultural events had a substantial impact on the life of the emerging Christian community.Accentuated with photos of relevant archaeological artifacts, this volume provides a significant new perspective from which to read Paul’s Corinthian correspondence.

3. Jesus And The Father
4. Jesus And The Father In The Synoptic Gospels
5. “Heirs Of God, Heirs With Christ”
6. “The Living Father”Additional Info
What does it mean to confess that God is “The Father of our Lord Jesus Chrst”? The Promise of the Father begins by showing that Judaism’s claim of God as “Father” never attached an ontological gender or “masculine” essence to God. Instead of setting the standard for the conduct for human personal fathers or men in general as some argue, God’s identity as “Father” served as an example for the entire community of faith as one who promotes mercy, justice, and humility. Jesus’ address to God as “Father” thus did not introduce a new private experience of intimacy with the divine, rather, it evoked Israel’s ancient and corporate hope of God’s saving power and covenant faithfulness. Above all then, to speak of God as “Father” signifies the redemptive and life-giving work of God and then only subsequently to human experience of that work. Christians can confess God as “Father of Jesus Christ” because God was first “Father” to the people of Israel and to Israel’s Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth and to the followers of Jesus. -

Proverbs Ecclesiastes And The Song Of Songs
$40.00Add to cartProverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs, though entirely different books, are similar in that they provide spiritual guidance about what it means to live wisely before God. In this thorough and readable commentary, Ellen Davis points out that the writers of these books considered wisdom and the fruits of wisdom – a well-ordered life and a peaceful mind – to be within the grasp of all those wholeheartedly desiring it.
From the confident “wise dealing” instructions in Proverbs, to the world-weariness of Ecclesiastes, to the exuberance of the Song of Songs, these books take the reader through the full range of human emotion. Their words cause one to reflect on both the ordinary and the extraordinary experiences of life: birth and death, poverty and wealth, education and work, grief and joy, human love and love of God. Though books of ancient wisdom, they continue to speak with particular power to the spiritual needs of our highly secularized age.

Voice Of Jesus In The Social Rhetoric Of James
$124.00Add to cartView other formats: Adobe eBook Reader Paperback
This programmatic socio-rhetorical investigation approaches the Epistle of James as an instance of written deliberative rhetoric, and it seeks to ascertain the social texture of James 2.5, a rhetorical performance of language that in other contexts is explicitly attributed to Jesus. Utilizing the conventions of Greco-Roman rhetoric, Dr Wachob successively probes the inner texture, the intertexture, the social and cultural texture, and the ideological implications of the rhetoric in James 2.1-13. He analyses James’ activation of antecedent texts in the LXX, common conceptions and topics in the broader culture, and also sayings in the Jesus tradition. He concludes that James emanates from the same milieu as the pre-Matthean Sermon on the Mount and shows James 2.5 to be an artful performance of the principal beatitude in that early epitome of Jesus’ teachings. -

II and III John are warnings against wandering preachers who taught false doctrines, and against individuals within the church who repudiated the writer’s authority. Jude is a strong indictment of immoral persons (antinomians) who had insinuated themselves into the church.

THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES“What Acts aims to do,” says Dr. Barclay in this important volume, “is to give us a series of typical exploits and adventures of the great heroic figures of the early Church. Although the book never says so, from the earliest times Luke has been held to be its writer.” He wrote both his gospel and Acts for the principal purpose of showing how the new faith that began so humbly in Palestine had expanded. Dr. Barclay discusses the plan in Acts, Luke’s skill as a historian, the accuracy of his sources, and the honesty with which he used them.
