  • Return To Justice

    $22.00

Reclaiming an Evangelical History of Activism
In recent years, there has been renewed interest by evangelicals in the topic of biblical social justice. Younger evangelicals and millennials, in particular, have shown increased concern for social issues. But this is not a recent development. Following World War II, a new movement of American evangelicals emerged who gradually increased their efforts on behalf of justice.

This work explains the important historical context for evangelical reengagement with social justice issues. The authors provide an overview of post-World War II evangelical social justice and compassion ministries, introducing key figures and seminal organizations that propelled the rediscovery of biblical justice. They explore historical and theological lessons learned and offer a way forward for contemporary Christians.

The church in the West is at a critical moment. While the gospel is exploding throughout the global south, Western civilization faces militant assaults from aggressive secularism and radical Islam. Will the church resist the seductive shaping power of advanced modernity? More than ever, Christians must resist the negative cultural forces of our day with fortitude and winsomeness. What is needed is followers of Christ who are willing to face reality without flinching and respond with a faithfulness that is unwavering. Os Guinness describes these Christians as “impossible people,” those who have “hearts that can melt with compassion, but with faces like flint and backbones of steel who are unmanipulable, unbribable, undeterrable and unclubbable, without ever losing the gentleness, the mercy, the grace and the compassion of our Lord.” Few accounts of the challenge of today are more realistic, and few calls to Christian courage are more timely, resolute?and hopeful. Guinness argues that we must engage secularism and atheism in new ways, confronting competing ideas with discernment and fresh articulation of the faith. Christians are called to be impossible people, serving an Impossible God.

  • Death Row Chaplain

    $15.99

From a former criminal and now chaplain for the San Francisco 49ers and the Golden State Warriors, comes a riveting, behind-the-bars look at one of America s most feared prisons: San Quentin. Reverend Earl Smith shares the most important lessons he s learned from years of helping inmates discover God s plan for them.

In 1983, twenty-seven-year-old Earl Smith arrived at San Quentin just like everyone thought he would. Labeled as a gang member and criminal from a young age, Smith was expected to do some time, but after a brush with death during a botched drug deal, Smith s soul was saved and his life path was altered forever.

From that moment on, Smith knew God had an unusual mission for him, and he became the minister to the lost souls sitting on death row. For twenty-three years, Smith played chess with Charles Manson, witnessed twelve executions, and negotiated truces between rival gangs. But most importantly, Smith helped the prisoners of San Quentin find redemption, hope, and understand that it is still possible to find God s grace and mercy from behind bars.

Edgy, insightful, and thought provoking, “Death Row Chaplain “teaches us that God s grace can reach anyone even the most desperate and lost and that it s never too late to turn our lives around.

  • Spiritual Friendship After Religion

    $20.95

Hardly a day goes by without some poll or news story documenting the changing relationship between the general population and religion, often accompanied by predictions of doom. The rise of the “nones” and the “dones” leaves many adrift in a world with multiple complex challenges. Providers of “spiritual friendship”-pastors, spiritual directors, pastoral counselors, concerned Christians-will need to change their approach as those with whom they interact distance themselves from the church. How should we talk with the “nones” and the “dones” about their spiritual lives? How can we be with them in their struggles when they are suspicious of our motives? These are questions providers of spiritual friendship face every day. This book offers answers that can help them look at their work in new ways. Stewart-Sicking presents an innovative approach to spiritual friendship, addressing major challenges of modern life and significant challenges in the lives of individuals, as well as making accessible scholarship on the subject that is difficult for practitioners to access.

From New York Times bestselling author and former Muslim Nabeel Qureshi comes this personal, challenging, and respectful answer to the many questions surrounding jihad, the rise of ISIS, and Islamic terrorism. San Bernardino was the most lethal terror attack on American soil since 9/11, and it came on the heels of a coordinated assault on Paris. There is no question that innocents were slaughtered in the name of Allah and in the way of Jihad, but do the terrorists’ actions actually reflect the religion of Islam? The answer to this question is more pressing than ever, as waves of Muslim refugees arrive in the West seeking shelter from the violent ideology of ISIS. Setting aside speculations and competing voices, what really is Jihad? How are we to understand Jihad in relation to our Muslim neighbors and friends? Why is there such a surge of Islamist terrorism in the world today, and how are we to respond? In Answering Jihad, bestselling author Nabeel Qureshi (Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus) answers these questions from the perspective of a former Muslim who is deeply concerned for both his Muslim family and his American homeland.

  • Philosophy In Seven Sentences

    $18.99

Philosophy is not a closed club or a secret society. It’s for anyone who thinks big questions are worth talking about. To get us started, Douglas Groothuis unpacks seven pivotal sentences from the history of western philosophy?a few famous, all short, none trivial. Included are:

Socrates? The unexamined life is not worth living.
Augustine? You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.
    Descartes?I think, therefore I am.
Pascal? The heart has reasons, that reason knows nothing of.

Protagoras, Aristotle and Kierkegaard round out this quick tour. Since every philosopher has a story, not just a series of ideas, Groothuis gives us a bit of each one’s life to set the stage. The seven sterling sentences themselves, while they can’t tell us all there is to know, offer bridges into other lands of thought which can spark new ideas and adventures. And who knows where they might lead?

“Why does God hate me?” “How can I believe in a God who has allowed my suffering?” These are just two of the difficult spiritual questions that survivors of child sexual abuse struggle with. In addition, survivors often have mixed feelings about the church because of perceived judgment and indifference, their own shame, or their discomfort with certain aspects of worship. Of the many aftereffects of sexual abuse, spiritual wounds are the least talked about, yet they are central to adult survivors who seek to heal and find faith and meaning in their lives. With grace and gentleness, this book seeks to answer survivors’ spiritual questions and address some of the common misconceptions that often develop when young victims attempt to understand what has happened to them. It explores the origins of their spiritual issues with clear psychological insights and guides survivors on a spiritual journey toward healing, wholeness, and a deeper relationship with God.

  • Do Ask Do Tell Lets Talk

    $9.99

Conversations among friends accomplish more than debates between opponents…

Conversations on controversial issues do not to go well when the dialogue happens community-to-community or figurehead-to-figurehead. Whether it’s race, religion, or politics, groups don’t talk well with groups. Too much is at stake when we feel like our words and actions speak for the collective whole. Platforms and podiums will never accomplish what can only be done around dinner tables and in living rooms.

Two individuals from those respective groups are much more likely to forge a good relationship, influencing one another in various ways. Unfortunately, an individual who listens well is often viewed by his or her collective compatriots as engaging in compromise; at the group level, representing each side fairly feels too much like agreement.

That is why the aim of this book is friendship. Friendship is the level at which influence can be had, because the dialogue does not seek to represent an agenda but to understand a person. Friendship is what protects good points from becoming gotcha moments.

The subject for which this approach may be most vital for the modern church may be homosexuality and same-sex attraction (SSA). Yet our approach has tended to be more polemical or political than pastoral and personal.

Churches have articulated their position on a conservative sexual ethic. Churches have re-examined the key biblical texts that are challenged in defense of a progressive sexual ethic. As important as these things are, however, they do not equip everyday Christians to develop meaningful friendships with people who experience same-sex attraction or have embraced a gay identity.

In the absence of relationship, our theology becomes theory.

Many Christians are seeing that the church’s unwillingness to befriend people who experience SSA has blocked us from engaging with the subject of homosexuality on a person-to-person level. We are reticent to engage relationships where it feels probable that there will be awkwardness.

Admittedly, this book is not as “neat” as you might like for it to be. Many tensions will be navigated; maybe not all contradictions will be avoided. However, when it comes to being salt and light for the sake of the gospel, it seems far better to choose possible messiness over guaranteed ineffectiveness.

That means we must realize that it is good for us to have conversations where we don’t know what to say. This is part of the ess

These are real words written by a real girl. There are thousands more just like her. Her pain is real. Her story is true. But her voice has been hidden… until now.

For those who will dare to listen to the truth, tragedy, and triumph found in the desperate words of a generation eclipsed by the white noise of a culture too busy to care, there are incredible stories to be unearthed. This book is a shocking, inspirational expose of just a few of these stories-hidden in plain sight. It is written in response to thousands of personal letters and messages, both for those in crisis and for those who share that crisis with them everyday. These are the stories, the responses, and ultimately the hope that we all should own for each other.

As one of the most sought-after public speakers in the world, Reggie Dabbs has shared his own incredible story with millions of adults and students each year for the past twenty-five years. Because of social media, many of them share their own stories with him in return. These letters contain their stories with names and details changed to protect their anonymity, having otherwise been kept in their original form. They are followed by Reggie’s actual response of hope to that individual. John Driver, MS-a former public secondary educator, as well as a fifteen-year community youth advocate and mentor-adds additional insight and “Breathable Moments” for educators, parents, friends, and family.

Equipping readers to help those in crisis continue breathing another day, Just Keep Breathing provides both the inspiration and the information needed to respond confidently and appropriately-and see those we care about make it to another sunrise.

  • Blood Bought World

    $16.00

If the Church is to rise up full of people who don’t give a damn about the fleeting pleasures of this life and who care only for the glory of Jesus and His Kingdom, we must once again grasp what made Jesus so immanently killable. If Jesus had been born in our day, the council that condemned Him would have included a couple of well-known evangelical pastors, a few outspoken pro-life leaders, a conservative- libertarian-leaning politician, and at least one Bible-thumping fundamentalist. Jesus was murdered by church people, for churchy reasons.

In Blood-Bought World, Toby Sumpter pinpoints the raw spots where modern-day Christians have allowed respectability, comfort, fear, love, fitness, authenticity, or other idols to become “fig leaves” to shield us from the Persons of the Trinity. We have relegated God to Sunday school presentations instead of following Jesus on the path to real authority and power: the cross.

God’s undiluted sovereignty demolishes every false human claim of autonomy. Men and women who know Jesus have no patience for a polite social club with religious jargon. The real Christian faith, delivered to the saints and driven by the Holy Spirit, is a wild, rambunctious, healing force set on the redemption of the world. That is what “being Christian” means: Hello, World! Jesus bought this place with His blood. Deal with it.

  • People To Be Loved

    $18.99

Christians who are confused by the homosexuality debate raging in the US are looking for resources that are based solidly on a deep study of what Scripture says about the issue. In People to Be Loved, Preston Sprinkle challenges those on all sides of the debate to consider what the Bible says and how we should approach the topic of homosexuality in light of it. In a manner that appeals to a scholarly and lay-audience alike, Preston takes on difficult questions such as how should the church treat people struggling with same-sex attraction? Is same-sex attraction a product of biological or societal factors or both? How should the church think about larger cultural issues, such as gay marriage, gay pride, and whether intolerance over LGBT amounts to racism? How (or if) Christians should do business with LGBT persons and supportive companies? Simply saying that the Bible condemns homosexuality is not accurate, nor is it enough to end the debate. Those holding a traditional view still struggle to reconcile the Bible’s prohibition of same-sex attraction with the message of radical, unconditional grace. This book meets that need.

  • Thinking About Sex

    $14.00

“Very many people, including not a few Christians, do not find the Christian tradition very helpful for making sense of sex. It is not that people willfully forsake a demanding sexual ethic for a more easygoing worldly one. It is that they often cannot see the point of its ‘demandingness.'”

Thus begins author Adrian Thatcher’s project of laying out an unashamedly and wholeheartedly liberal approach to sex and sexuality. Fully aware that for some the word liberal has taken on negative connotations, Thatcher builds on a liberalism in which individuals are encouraged to make up their minds about what faith is and how they are to apply it to their own lives, recognizing that within the boundaries of faith there is much scope for variety in individual belief and practice.

Using familiar theological ideas, biblical passages, and Christian doctrines, Thatcher sets out to place them intelligibly in a twenty-first-century context. Subjects covered include desire, bodies, sexual difference, marriage, spirituality, and sexualities.

In today’s world, the topic of homosexuality seems to be part of everyday conversation in the media, in politics, and even inside churches, with pressure to accept one view or the other. And if you’re a Christian teen, there seems to be few easy answers to the issues you regularly encounter, such as: Can you be friends with someone who is gay? What if your sister is a lesbian, or you sometimes wonder if you might be as well? Does the Bible really say homosexuality is wrong? What does God want us to do and say? Preston Sprinkle has encountered these same questions, and as a theologian and a college professor he has dealt with these issues firsthand. Through honest conversation, real-life examples, and biblical research, Sprinkle unpacks what we can know to be true, and how Scripture’s overall message to us today allows us to move forward and find answers that align with God’s intent.

Ever since John Winthrop told his fellow colonists in 1630 that they were about to establish a City upon a Hill, the idea of having a special place in history has captured the American imagination. Through centuries of crises and opportunities, many have taken up this theme to inspire the nation. But others have criticized the notion because it implies a sense of superiority which can fuel racism, warmongering and even idolatry.

In this remarkable book, John Wilsey traces the historical development of exceptionalism, including its theological meaning and implications for civil religion. From seventeenth-century Puritans to twentieth-century industrialists, from politicians to educators, exceptionalism does not appear as a monolithic concept to be either totally rejected or devotedly embraced. While it can lead to abuses, it can also point to constructive civil engagement and human flourishing. This book considers historically and theologically what makes the difference.

Neither the term nor the idea of American exceptionalism is going away. John Wilsey’s careful history and analysis will therefore prove an important touchstone for discussions of American identity in the decades to come.

Together for the Common Good is a network of scholars, church leaders and activists engaged in matters of social justice. Its first major event was a conference in Liverpool in 2013. Since then the network has developed and grown and its website and e-newsletters have a wide reach. Research undertaken prior to the conference showed that the importance of churches, clergy and lay people being involved in working for social justice on the ground and for this activism to be rooted in the Christian tradition. Therefore it is time for a popular, accessible short book aimed at practitioners.

It is written in non- technical, accessible language and designed to be of interest to clerical and lay audiences across denominations, including those who create, manage and implement social justice initiatives.

It contains lots of illustrative examples of the ways that churches work together and of the range of social action undertaken by churches locally and nationally – pastoral, advocacy, campaigning.

    $17.00

A pastor with an unforgettable inside story shows evangelicals how to nurture healthy, respectful, and biblically informed relationships with people in the LGBT community

When Caleb Kaltenbach was a toddler, his parents divorced and independently pursued homosexual lifestyles. As a result, Caleb was lovingly raised in the LGBT community, attending lesbian parties with his mother and her partner, marching in gay parades…and experiencing hatred and bitterness by Christians. To his enduring surprise, Caleb became a Christian-and a pastor-as a young adult.

Messy Grace invites readers into what may be the most urgent and difficult conversation evangelicals face today: “How can we relate to the gays, lesbians, and transgendered among us in a way that honors differences and demonstrates Christ’s love while adhering to what we believe Scripture requires?”

Through revealing personal story, biblical teaching, and practical solutions, Caleb’s non-judgmental voice and life-tested counsel will appeal to a broad psychographic of evangelicals who understand that despite the good intentions of most on this issue, some Christians have done great harm and we desperately need constructive answers.

“The conflict is only ‘seemingly’ beyond solution, because all historical-political problems have solutions, if there is enough courage, honesty, and steadfastness.”

In Chosen?, Walter Brueggemann explores the situation in modern-day Israel that raises questions for many Christians who are easily confused when reading biblical accounts of God’s saving actions with the Israelites. Are modern Israeli citizens the descendants of the Israelites in the Bible whom God called chosen? Was the promise of land to Moses permanent and irrevocable? What about others living in the promised land? How should we read the Bible in light of the modern situation? Who are the Zionists, and what do they say?

  • Voices From The Hospice

    $27.00

Hospice chaplain Bob Whorton takes us deep into the human experience of suffering and waiting. Framed as a train journey, we are invited to travel through various stations and stop for a while in many different station waiting rooms. The counter-cultural message is that there are difficult situations in our lives which we cannot escape from and must be lived; there are no short-cuts, and the stations must be travelled through one by one. However, in following this path we will find a new orientation to life, and we will find ourselves mirroring the way of Christ. In these pages we listen to the voices of patients and family members in a hospice; they become our teachers. And we listen also to the ancient voice of the psalmist who was well versed in the ways of suffering love.

Seminary professor Leah Gunning Francis was among the activists, and her interviews with more than two dozen faith leaders and with the new movement’s organizers take us behind the scenes of the continuing protests. Ferguson and Faith demonstrates that being called to lead a faithful life can take us to places we never expected to go, with people who never expected us to join hands with them. Pope Paul VI characterized the Second Vatican Council’s Declaration on Religious Freedom — Dignitatis Humanae — as one of the greatest documents of Vatican II. It is also perhaps the most intensely debated document of the Council; both the drafting of the Declaration of Religious Freedom and its reception have been marked by deep disagreements about what this teaching means for the Church.

In this book David Schindler and Nicholas Healy promote a deeper understanding of this important document. In addition to presenting a new translation of the approved text of the Declaration, Freedom, Truth, and Human Dignity makes available for the first time in English the five drafts of the document that were presented to the Council bishops leading up to the final version. The book also includes an original interpretive essay on Dignitatis Humanae by Schindler and an essay on the genesis and redaction history of the text by Healy.

  • Rich Christians In An Age Of Hunger

    $19.99

Do you want to make a true difference in the world? Dr. Ron Sider does. He has, since before he first published Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger in 1978. Despite a dramatic reduction in world hunger since then, 34,000 children still die daily of starvation and preventable disease, and 1.3 billion people, worldwide, remain in abject poverty. So, the professor of theology went back to re-examine the issues by twenty-first century standards. Finding that Conservatives blame morally reprehensible individual choices, and Liberals blame constrictive social and economic policy, Dr. Sider finds himself agreeing with both sides. In this new look at an age-old problem, he offers not only a detailed explanation of the causes, but also a comprehensive series of practical solutions, in the hopes that Christians like him will choose to make a difference.

Few topics are more contested today than gender identity. In the fog of the culture war, complex issues like gender dysphoria are reduced to slogans and sound bites. And while the war rages over language, institutions and political allegiances, transgender individuals are the ones who end up being the casualties. Mark Yarhouse, an expert in sexual identity and therapy, challenges the church to rise above the political hostilities and listen to people’s stories. In Understanding Gender Dysphoria, Yarhouse offers a Christian perspective on transgender issues that eschews simplistic answers and appreciates the psychological and theological complexity. The result is a book that engages the latest research while remaining pastorally sensitive to the experiences of each person. In the midst of a tense political climate, Yarhouse calls Christians to come alongside those on the margins and stand with them as they resolve their questions and concerns about gender identity. Understanding Gender Dysphoria is the book we need to navigate these stormy cultural waters.

Hearts & Minds Bookstore’s Best Books of 2015, Social Criticism and Cultural Engagement In our post-Christian context, public life has become markedly more secular and private life infinitely more diverse. Yet many Christians still rely on cookie-cutter approaches to evangelism and apologetics. Most of these methods assume that people are open, interested and needy for spiritual insight when increasingly most people are not. Our urgent need, then, is the capacity to persuade?to make a convincing case for the gospel to people who are not interested in it. In his magnum opus, Os Guinness offers a comprehensive presentation of the art and power of creative persuasion. Christians have often relied on proclaiming and preaching, protesting and picketing. But we are strikingly weak in persuasion?the ability to talk to people who are closed to what we are saying. Actual persuasion requires more than a one-size-fits-all approach. Guinness notes, “Jesus never spoke to two people the same way, and neither should we.” Following the tradition of Erasmus, Pascal, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, Malcolm Muggeridge and Peter Berger, Guinness demonstrates how apologetic persuasion requires both the rational and the imaginative. Persuasion is subversive, turning the tables on listeners’ assumptions to surprise them with signals of transcendence and the credibility of the gospel. This book is the fruit of forty years of thinking, honed in countless talks and discussions at many of the leading universities and intellectual centers of the world. Discover afresh the persuasive power of Christian witness from one of the leading apologists and thinkers of our era.

How can we work together for the common good today? Thirteen contributors – Christian, Jewish, Muslim, non-religious – discuss the common good from a wide range of viewpoints. How have thinkers like Aristotle and Edmund Burke talked about the common good in the past? Catholic Social Teaching has a lot to say about the common good: what does the common good mean for the world’s great religious traditions today? How can we usefully talk about the common good in a plural society? What responsibility has the state for the common good? Can the market serve the common good? If we care about the common good, what should we think – and do – about immigration, education, the NHS, inequality, and freedom? This book starts from the example of David Sheppard and Derek Worlock, the Anglican Bishop and Roman Catholic Archbishop, who famously worked together for the good of the city of Liverpool in the 1980s. The contributors call for a national conversation about how, despite our differences, we can work together – locally, nationally, internationally – for the common good.

Much like a person who has awaked from a decades-long coma to be introduced to a radically different world, evangelicals are just awakening to the reality that they have lost the culture war in this country.

We are seeing the rapid deterioration and dismantling of a Judean-Christian culture in America – and believers are finding themselves in unfamiliar positions. Values once held sacred are being discarded. Freedoms once offered are being withheld. Biblical absolutes once embraced are being replaced by relativism. Trend lines, unless altered, point to accelerated cultural change and even greater drift from the historic roots of this country.

As a result, there is a growing intolerance towards believers and their message. Increasingly, followers of Jesus are being viewed as narrow, bigoted and hateful.

Yet all of this was predicted by Christ before His departure. Prepare: Living Your Faith in an Increasingly Hostile Culture will set forth a biblical, theological, and practical approach to navigating the challenging days ahead and a reason for hope and optimism – the power of the Gospel and the possibility of societal transformation.

  • Nonviolent Action : What Christian Ethics Demands But Most Christians Have

    $23.00

There are numerous examples throughout history of effective nonviolent action. Nonviolent protesters defied the Soviet Empire’s communist rulers, Gandhi’s nonviolent revolution defeated the British Empire, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s peaceful civil-rights crusade changed American history. Recent scholarship shows that nonviolent revolutions against injustice and dictatorship are actually more successful than violent campaigns. In this book, noted theologian and bestselling author Ron Sider argues that the search for peaceful alternatives to violence is not only a practical necessity in the wake of the twentieth century–the most bloody in human history–but also a moral demand of the Christian faith. He presents compelling examples of how nonviolent action has been practiced in history and in current social-political situations to promote peace and oppose injustice, showing that this path is a successful and viable alternative to violence.

What is a worldview? What lies behind your thoughts about almost everything? For more than thirty years, James W. Sire has grappled with this issue. In his widely used textbook The Universe Next Door, first published in 1976, Sire offered a succinct definition of a worldview and catalogued in summary fashion seven basic worldview alternatives. Students, critics, new literature and continued reflection have led him to reexamine and refine his definition of a worldview. This second edition companion volume to The Universe Next Door is the fruit of that effort, offering readers his most mature thought on the concept of a worldview, addressing such questions as

What is the history of the concept itself?
What is the first question you should ask in formulating a worldview?
How are worldviews formed existentially as well as intellectually?
Is a worldview primarily an intellectual system, a way of life or a story?
What are the public and private dimensions of a worldview?
What role can worldview thinking play in assessing your own worldview and those of others, especially in light of the pluralism in today’s world?

Naming the Elephant is an excellent resource for exploring more deeply how and why worldview thinking can aid you in navigating your pluralistic universe.

Divorce can make someone feel that their life can never be right again. Where is God? Could he possibly understand? Would he even want to lead me through this? And why has this happened to me? Today’s seminary and religious-education instructors are expected to design and redesign their courses more nimbly than in the past. We have to adapt our courses to novel learning environments, for more diverse learners, toward more diverse vocations. At the same time, institutional rewards for time invested in course design are fewer than ever. Understanding Bible by Design introduces the reader to Understanding by Design: an approach to course design that is proven time-efficient and grounded in the instructor’s most closely-held convictions about her subject matter’s “big ideas and essential questions.” This book’s contributors (one in Old Testament, one in New Testament, and one in Jewish Studies) demonstrate the value of Understanding Bible by Design for the Biblical Studies instructor, whether at seminary or university, face-to-face or online, from the intimate seminar to the massive MOOC.

Lester’s synopsis of course design and suggested action is followed by a collaborative dialogue with Jane S. Webster and Christopher M. Jones. Webster and Jones provide practical commentary regarding the successful implementation of Lester’s proposed approaches. As a group, Lester, Webster, and Jones create a text that extends pedagogical innovation in inspiring but practical ways.

  • Effective Social Learning

    $24.00

The ground of higher education is shifting, but learning ecosystems around the world have much more space than MOOCs and trendy online platforms can fill, and Loewen shows how professors have an indisputable pedagogical edge that gives them a crucial role to play in higher education. By adopting the collaborative pedagogical process in this book, professors can create effective social learning experiences that connect students to peers and professional colleagues in real-time.

Loewen moves beyond surface questions about technology in the classroom to a problem best addressed by educators in bricks-and-mortar institutions: if students are social learners, how do we teach in a way that promotes actual dialogue for learning? Designing learning experiences that develop intercultural competencies puts the test to students’ social inclinations, and engagement with course material increases when it’s used to dig deeper into the specificities of their identity and social location. Loewen’s approach to inter-institutional collaborative teaching will be explored with examples and working templates for collaborative design of effective social learning experiences. This is done by collaborative dialogue with G. Brooke Lester and Christopher Duncanson-Hales. As a group, Loewen, Lester, and Duncanson-Hales create a text that extends pedagogical innovation in inspiring but practical wa

  • To Everyone An Answer

    $40.99

In a society fascinated by spirituality but committed to religious pluralism, the Christian worldview faces sophisticated and aggressive opposition. A prior commitment to diversity, with its requisite openness and relativistic outlook, has meant for skeptics, critics and even many Christians that whatever Christianity is, it cannot be exclusively true or salvific. What is needed in this syncretistic era is an authoritative, comprehensive Christian response. Point by point, argument by argument, the Christian faith must be effectively presented and defended. To Everyone an Answer: A Case for the Christian Worldview offers such a response. Editors Francis J. Beckwith, William Lane Craig and J. P. Moreland have gathered together in this book essays covering all major aspects of apologetics, including:

    faith and reason
    arguments for God’s existence
    the case for Jesus
    the problem of evil
    postmodernism
    religious pluralism and Christian exclusivism

Preeminent in their respective fields, the contributors to this volume offer a solid case for the Christian worldview and a coherent defense of the Christian faith.

They also tell the story of Ron’s personal journey from sexual brokenness to healing.

  • Reconcile : Conflict Transformation For Ordinary Christians

    $18.99

What if reconciliation is central to the biblical message? And what if Christians, who have been missing the mark for millennia, are waking up to the reconciling mission of God? Reconcile: Conflict Transformation for Ordinary Christians by international mediator John Paul Lederach serves as a guidebook for Christians seeking a scriptural view of reconciliation and practical steps for transforming conflict. Originally published as The Journey toward Reconciliation, this revised and updated book tells dramatic stories of what works-and what doesn’t-in deeply rooted conflicts between individuals and groups. Lederach leads readers through stories of conflict and reconciliation in Scripture, using these stories as anchors for peacemaking strategies that Christians can put into practice in families and churches. He also offers new lenses through which to view conflict, whether congregational conflicts or global terrorism. A section of resources offers tools for understanding interpersonal, church, and global conflict, prayers and worship resources, discussion questions, resource lists for further study, and invitations to actions in everyday life.

Many books seek to predict the future of Christianity, but few help us grasp the opportunities of the current situation and equip us to navigate the present. Doug Pagitt, author, radio host, and pioneering leader, does just that, offering fresh, optimistic insights and practical suggestions. According to Pagitt, the last two centuries can be divided into four epochs: Idyllic, Industrial, Informational and now-Inventive. The Inventive Age – our currently reality – presents distinct opportunities for how faith communities think, what they value, and the tools they use. Pagitt offers leaders in Christian communities (and beyond) essential frameworks for participation in the Inventive Age.

  • Undistorted God : Dispatches Of Reclaiming Faith Amid The Cultural Noise

    $19.99

Ray Waddle encourages us to find meaning inside, sometimes despite, the contentious times we live in. He helps readers see through spiritual insecurity and distraction to see God in new places: in the sky, in writing, in walking, in music, in memory in Gospel reading, the bread and wine, worship, the very name Jesus-and get beneath social habits or routine theological assumptions in order to find a fresh core of epiphany. There’s a long and passionate spiritual tradition of waiting for God, waiting for revival, waiting for a personal sign or the end of time-waiting for something, anything to happen. But when the noise simmers down, and the cameras stop rolling, another truth endures: God is waiting, the faith is waiting, patiently waiting out the world’s false starts. It’s as if God is rooting for the soul to brush past the distractions and move toward the burning light, toward the divine presence, the indestructible news, a less distorted faith.

  • Forgotten Girls : Stories Of Hope And Courage (Expanded)

    $16.99

Expanded edition with a discussion guide to accompany each section of the book, updated statistics and a new preface.

Think of the little girls you know: your daughter, a niece, a friend’s child.

And then think about this: little girls are tossed away every day.

All over the world, women and girls face starvation, displacement, illiteracy, sexual exploitation and abuse.

In fact, statistics show that the world’s most oppressed are overwhelmingly female.

Moved by their plight, Kay Marshall Strom and Michele Rickett took a trip across continents to partner with ministries working to help females and to interview girls in some of the most difficult places in the world.

These pages hold those girls’ stories: stories of deep pain and suffering, inspiring courage, and incredible hope. They are the stories of girls who have discovered their value in God’s eyes, in the midst of cultures that have rejected them. They are stories of rescue and redemption by God working through compassionate people–people like you.

These pages might hold pieces of your story as well, as the authors invite you to pray and speak on behalf of the millions of women and girls who still need to know how much they’re worth. The authors provide specific, practical action steps and prayer points that allow you to get involved as God leads.

Our powerful God will help us as we read, speak and pray on their behalf, that the forgotten might become free.

Our world is multi-cultural, multi-religious, multi-philosophical. It ranges from fundamental monotheism to do-it-yourself spirituality to strident atheism. How can we authentically and effectively present the message of Jesus the Messiah in such a pluralistic and often relativistic context? When Paul visited Athens, as told in the book of Acts, he found an equally multi-cultural and multi-religious setting. From Jews to Gentiles, elite to poor, slaves to slave owners, from olive-skinned Gentiles to dark-skinned Ethiopians–the Greco-Roman world was a dynamic mixture. Religions practices were also wide and varied, with the Imperial cult of Emperor worship being the most prominent. Many also frequented the temples for the traditional Greek pantheon, and participated in the secret rituals of the Mystery Religions. Philosopher Paul Copan and New Testament scholar Kenneth Litwak team up to show how Paul’s example found in Acts 17 provide a practical model that still fits today. They uncover the cultural and religious background of this key episode in the Apostle’s career. With equal facility they show what it means for us who live in an age of competing beliefs and value systems.

Let all creation rejoice before the LORD, for he comes. Psalm 96:13 The Bible is bathed with images of God caring for his creation in all its complexity. Yet in the face of climate change and other environmental trends, philosophers, filmmakers, environmentalists, politicians and senior scientists increasingly resort to apocalyptic rhetoric to warn us that a so-called perfect storm of factors threatens the future of life on earth. Jonathan Moo and Robert White ask, “Do these dire predictions amount to nothing more than ideological scaremongering, perhaps hyped-up for political or personal ends? Or are there good reasons for thinking that we may indeed be facing a crisis unprecedented in its scale and in the severity of its effects?” The authors encourage us to assess the evidence for ourselves. Their own conclusion is that there is in fact plenty of cause for concern. Climate change, they suggest, is potentially the most far-reaching threat that our planet faces in the coming decades, and also the most publicized. But there is a wide range of much more obvious, interrelated and damaging effects that a growing number of people, consuming more and more, are having on the planet upon which we all depend. Yet if the Christian gospel fundamentally reorients us in our relationship to God and his world, then there ought to be something radically distinctive about our attitude and approach to such threats. In short, there ought to be a place for hope. And there ought to be a place for Christians to participate in that hope. Moo and White therefore reflect on the difference the Bible’s vision of the future of all of creation makes. Why should creation rejoice? Because God loves and cares the world he made.

CEO of Large Nonprofit Warns that Charity and Christian Service Can Have a Dark Side

Most Christians today are interested in more than just preaching the gospel with words; they also want to serve others. But what happens when Christian service and social justice lead to burnout, pride, or worse? Peter Greer gives a firsthand account of how this can happen, leaning on his experiences as CEO of HOPE International, a large Christian nonprofit that serves those in need by helping them help themselves. Greer uses stories from his own life and others in ministry to help readers protect themselves from disillusionment and other dangers. He uses the Pharisees as a symbol of how something that starts off with the noblest of intentions can go off the tracks, and how to get it back on again. This book serves as a compassionate warning to everyone who works in ministry or charitable nonprofits, from CEOs to weekend volunteers.

A SOCIALIST AGENDA RIGHT IN YOUR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD Anyone who watches the headlines knows that war rages in our nation. The liberal agenda to destroy America’s three cornerstones of exceptionalism and to transform our nation into a socialist country grows more blatant by the day. What many parents and educators fail to realize, however, is that this agenda has already gained ground in communities across the fruited plain through an avenue few would expect-our public school system. In pushing your neighborhood toward socialism, the public school system: * Attacks family values, Christianity, and American patriotism. * Erodes America’s traditions and Christian foundation. * Pushes the state religion and a spirit of governmental dependence. * Encourages physical, moral, and intellectual weakness. * Handicaps students from achieving their full potential. Written by an educational insider, this eye-opening expose, a must have for every concerned parent, describes the 235-year plan to hijack American democracy. It also reveals a destructive philosophy, based on Plato’s Republic, America must abandon to avert God’s judgment.

Violence against women and girls is a human rights epidemic that affects millions of lives around the world. While many Christians are addressing this crisis through education, advocacy and philanthropic support, there has been a reluctance to name gendercide as a theological and confessional issue, a matter that strikes at the very essence of the Christian faith. In The Cross and Gendercide, Elizabeth Gerhardt draws on Luther’s “theology of the cross” to provide a theological basis for naming and responding to the grave sin of global gendercide. She lifts up the work and witness of Dietrich Bonhoeffer as an especially powerful resource for mobilizing the church today toward political action and social engagement. From the perspective of Christ’s cross, the church must raise a prophetic voice against systemic violence and speak up for the myriad women and girls who are invisible and voiceless in the world today.

Twenty-seven-year-old Sarah Thebarge had it all – a loving boyfriend, an Ivy League degree, and a successful career – when her life was derailed by an unthinkable diagnosis: aggressive breast cancer. After surviving the grueling treatments – though just barely – Sarah moved to Portland, Oregon to start over. There, a chance encounter with an exhausted African mother and her daughters transformed her life again.

A Somali refugee whose husband had left her, Hadhi was struggling to raise five young daughters, half a world a way from her war-torn homeland. • Corruption Of America

    $25.99

The America we know and love is in danger as never before in its history. The Land of George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and the uniquely great American Constitution is under deadly attack. It has already been distorted and heavily damaged. America is being assaulted from within and without by forces of atheism, legalized immorality, socialism, communism, and Islam. Some of these forces go by the deceptive names of “progressives,” “social democrats,” “leftists,” as well as socialism, communism, and atheism, but they have their basis in vile hatred of America, and they work assiduously to malign and defame our country, and overthrow it. Their method is constant lying and deception in every form imaginable. We witness preposterous lies every day from these individuals and groups in their quest to defame America, conservatism, Republicans, and any individual or group that opposes them. They have as their goal the revolutionary overthrow of America, and its replacement by socialism, communism, or Islam and Sharia law. All of these forces have a long historical record of inhuman cruelty, genocide, and democide.

The destructive revolutionary activities of the 1960s opened up these avenues of attack, and they have increasingly evolved and been institutionalized since the 1970s and 80s. They run throughout our educational institutions, the courts, the media, entertainment, and have even infiltrated our government. Our universities have been corrupted and politicized by them. Many professors who teach our young people today are avowed Marxists, socialists, and communists. Many of these professors are also radical feminists who are atheists, Marxists, communists, and lesbians. They also express great hatred for America, and seek to radically change it to some form of Marxism, socialism, or communism. The ACLU, an atheist and communist organization from its start in 1920, is now a highly financed organization that actually seeks to legally overthrow Constitutional American liberties, and promote a totally different world of anarchic, atheistic freedom, divorced from God and moral law, and which will be intolerant of anything else. America began as a Christian democratic nation, with Presidents who stood staunchly for liberty under God, Christianity, the Bible, and freedom of worship. They warned us against the results of immorality-tyranny, despotism, corruption, and decline. Constitutional liberties have already been largely swept away by a Suprem

Through her extensive experience in ministering to gay and lesbian Christians, Wendy VanderWal-Gritter has come to believe we need a new paradigm for how the church engages those in the sexual minority. She encourages generous spaciousness, a hope-filled, relational way forward for those in turmoil regarding a response to gay and lesbian Christians. This book offers a framework for discussing diversity in a gracious way, showing that the church can be a place that welcomes a variety of perspectives on the complex matter of human sexuality. It also offers practical advice for implementing generous spaciousness in churches and organizations.

All religions and worldviews seek to answer the fundamental questions of human existence: Why am I here? What does it mean to be human? Why is there evil in the world and how do we deal with it? But not every worldview places equal emphasis on each issue. The main worldviews each tend to stress a different central question. Secular humanism focuses on: What is the inherent value of human beings? Pantheism emphasizes: How do we escape suffering? Islam’s main concern is: How is God great? Abdu Murray digs deeply into these three representatives of major worldviews of our day: atheism, pantheism and theism. This lawyer and former Muslim brings compassion, understanding and clarity to his analysis, comparing the answers of each view to the central message of Christianity.

Far from the dry rhetoric of the customary treatment of the issue of gangs, Eugene breaths vibrant life and great understanding into the depictions of his own experiences and those of the children with which he has worked as a youth advocate. Having experienced life on the streets firsthand, Eugene is uniquely qualified and capable of presenting the issues in a manner accessible to people of all walks of life.

“Hope,” who spoke some words to me that I am sure I will never forget as long as I shall live. Her words to me were: “When one door closes….

Attacking the subject matter from all angles, Eugene educates his readers as to how gang violence, and the greater societal problems of which gangs are a symptom, effects all aspects of society, and further suggests a call to action, and how by strengthening families and an individual’s relationship with God, the problem can be addressed at its roots.

Eugene Lee McDuffie’s “Angels without Wings” boldly takes a stand against gangs, and bullies, exposing the pitfalls of entanglement in gang involvement. “Children develop an attachment to those who show them attention and respond to their needs reliably. The bond that a child has with its caregiver will impact the child for the rest of its life.”

We all can do something about this problem, I learned, as I stepped out on faith alone to educate and help children stay away from gangs, drugs and violence. The question is: Are there angels? You and I know the answer is yes! There are definitely angels! Any person, if we choose to be, can be an Angel without Wings!

  • Dancing With The Devil

    $17.99

In Dancing with the Devil, evangelist Melvin Pillay addresses cultural Christianity in America and the adversary’s plot to pull the Church into a deadly waltz of apostasy. This wake-up call will challenge readers to examine one’s personal faith and understanding of biblical Christianity. As a missionary from South Africa, Pillay shares his heart for the American church to turn the tide back toward a nation that is submitted to God’s authority rather than pinned under man-made institutions. Much like C.S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters, strategies of the enemy are exposed and brought to light. The forgotten pillars of the Christian life are outlined with an honest heart to see God’s people return to their intended purpose and calling. Jesus gave the mandate to discern the times, to watch and pray. This timely word is speaking to the Body of Christ and her need to rise up against the threat of spiritual darkness and prepare for His return.

  • Incarnate : The Body Of Christ In An Age Of Disengagement

    $20.99

    14 Chapters

    Additional Info
The story of Christianity is a story of incarnation–God taking on flesh and dwelling among the people he created. God appointing and sending people as his body, his hands and feet. Disciples of Jesus bearing the good news even as they bear the marks of his passion. Whatever Christianity is, it is at least a matter of flesh and blood and the ends of the earth. And yet so much of contemporary Christian culture is rooted not in incarnation but in escape–escape from the earth to heaven, escape from the suffering of this world, escape even from one another. Christianity is increasingly understood as something personal, conceptual, interior, private, neighborless. If Jesus was God incarnate, the church is in danger of being excarnate. Michael Frost expertly and prophetically exposes the gap between the faith we profess and the faith we practice. And he offers new hope for how the church can fulfill its vocation: the hands and feet of Christ to one another and to our neighbors, to the ends of the earth and to the end of the age.

  • Witness : True Events From A Society Living Working And Dying In Trash

    $16.49

Are God’s actions visible in the world today?

Does He still do the type of works we see in the Bible-provide supernatural guidance, unexplained timely provision and protection, miraculous answers to simple prayer, and physical healing when the doctors have given up hope?

If yes, then where is He at work?

Standing in the middle of a landfill just over five years ago, Brett Durbin was confronted with a reality that has been described by many as being the closest thing to hell on earth that exists in our post-modern culture. Children and families that have nothing scrounge in the trash dump for a few scraps of metal to pay for their next bowl of rice. But what could be done to help such a forgotten society?

Witness is the compelling true story of Brett’s experience as he obeyed the call to reach out to the least, the lost, and the forgotten through the formation of Trash Mountain Project, the organization he founded. It is the story of an amazing God, whose actions are very much visible in the lives of the organization and the people they co-labor with and serve around the world.
