    • Rapture And The Second Coming Of Christ

      $16.23

As humanity steps into a new millennium, thoughts turn easily to questions of what the Bible has to say about our future. Will the Lord return soon? When will the rapture take place? Will the church endure the tribulation? Will the Antichrist rule the world?

For years, believers have relied on Finis Dake to provide simple explanations of sound doctrine-especially in matters of Bible prophecy. Those who hunger for such truth will find solid meat in the pages of The Rapture and the Second Coming of Christ.

      $50.00

Picking up where he left off in The Historical Jesus: A Comprehensive Guide, Theissen discusses religion as “a cultural sign language that promises a gain in life by corresponding to an ultimate reality”; and presents Christianity as a religion with elements of myth, ritual, ethics, and an emergent symbolic system.

    • Paul : The Man And The Myth

      $48.33

We are left to reconstruct a portrait of Paul with only scraps of what was once a large and imposing canvas-a small collection of letters and a historical narrative written a generation after his death. This reconstruction focuses on important parts of the image that usually fall in the shadows, parts dealing with Paul’s sexual asceticism, his preoccupation with holiness-holy Spirit, holy community, and holy ethos-the evolution of his theology, and his emergence as a legendary figure. Although I have tried to follow the strict rules of historical investigation, of necessity much guesswork is involved in any exploration of Paul’s life. All of these efforts are attempts to deal with the gaps in the text, understood in the broadest sense to include not just Paul’s written words but also the culture, social world, and political realities surrounding them.

      $46.00

In this well-researched history of the rise, development, and near-demise of Karl Barth’s theology, Gary Dorrien carefully analyzes the making of the Barthian revolution and the reasons behind its simultaneously dominating and marginal character. Dorrien discusses Barth’s relationship to his predecessors and his contemporaries, as well as to modern theologians. He argues that Barth’s approach to theology was deeply indebted to his liberal past and was not essentially a form of “neoorthodox” positivism.

      $14.99

For decades Americans have turned to the Commerce Department’s Index of Leading Economic Indicators to spot trends in the economy. The Index of Leading Cultural Indicators brings a similar kind of empirical analysis to the moral, social and behavioral condition of American society-a vivid, clear accessible portrait in numbers of who and where we are as a nation. First published in 1995 and now completely updated and considerably expanded, it draws from a wide array of government sources to offer comprehensive chapters on crime, family and children, youth pathologies and behavior, education, popular culture and religion, as well as new chapters on the American spirit, on international and decade by decade comparisons, and a ranking Os states and cities. For each topic covered, there are statistical and numerical breakdown tables and graphs and a “Factual Overview” interpreting the data.

    • Final Steps In Christian Maturity

      $10.95

The King of France ordered Jeanne Guyon to appear before Archbishop Bossuet for interrogation. This would be a fateful event for her, for the results of that interrogation would decided whether or not she would be imprisoned.

Jeanne Guyon made the decision to present to Bossuet a clear statement – and defense – of her teachings. The result was a massive three-volume work entitled Justifications.

This work was later printed in French, probably appearing in only one printing. Justifications has never appeared in English, and has been virtually forgotten. Final Steps In Christian Maturity is a careful selection of some of the very best material found in that original three-volume work.

Here, then, is some of the finest literature ever penned on the deeper Christian life.

    • Little Lost Girl

      $15.00

The events of Leisha Joseph’s life are sensational, but the deeper story lies in her relationship to God, and in what she can now teach others who suffer from the fear and hurt that result from violence and trauma.

As the treasured only daughter of an upper-middle-class family, Leisha, as well as her brothers, enjoyed a happy childhood. When she was eight years old, all this changed abruptly with the death of her father. The strain on her mother manifested itself in wild behavior. In between frequent stays in private mental hospitals, she brought home a string of boyfriends, some of whom preferred children and made their way to Leisha’s bed. After trying to burn down the house and chasing Leisha with a kitchen knife, her mother was confined to the state mental hospital. While friends and family lent a hand, it was largely up to Leisha and her brothers to keep the family intact.

Sadly, Leisha experienced the pain of isolation because of her family situation. She found God as a teenager, but that comfort did not last long. Leisha became disillusioned with Christianity and began taking drugs until an overdose had her on her knees, promising to serve God all her life if He saved her. She was sober in an instant, and has kept her promise.

Just when she had managed to turn her life around and was a finalist in the Miss Teen USA pageant, recently graduated with honors from high school, and engaged to marry a godly young man, Leisha experienced an attack at the hands of a serial rapist. Yet God intervened once more, giving her the words that would save her life and would eventually cause her attacker to confess in court. Even when he escaped and came after her, as he had threatened to do, Leisha refused to let fear dominate her life. She rejected the advice of the Witness Protection Program, instead relying on God’s saving hands.

    • Hope Against Hope

      $23.99

Two leading New Testament scholars explore the Christian vision of the future from the perspective of life today.
The start of the twenty-first century evokes fresh concern for what the future holds. Will it bring an end to suffering and evil? Can we look for a new heaven and earth? Will judgment be cosmic or personal? HOPE AGAINST HOPE revisits these and other questions central to Christian eschatology and provides a fresh yet responsible look at the church’s vision of the future. Integrating images from the Bible and Christian tradition with analysis of contemporary Western culture, Richard Bauckham and Trevor Hart reinterpret the meaning of such eschatological themes as the antichrist, the last judgment, and the kingdom of God in terms that will benefit students and general readers alike.

      $11.95

There have been more copies of this book burned than perhaps any other single Christian book ever published.

So powerful was its influence on Europe that within 6 years of its release this book had been translated into every language in Western Europe. In Naples, Italy it was said that 20,000 Christians gathered in small groups to practice inward prayer.

Michael Molinos came closer to reforming the Catholic church than any other single man in history, yet he ended up sealed in a dungeon, his book condemned. A man so controversial that even until today the Vatican will not release the transcript of his (secret) trial. Now, for the first time ever, this book appears in modern English. The first English language release in over a hundred years.

Included in the book is the first biography of Michael Nolinos to appear in English in over 100 years.

      THE HISTORY OF THIS BOOK

One of the most influential spiritual books ever penned, even secular historians acknowledge the great impact Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ has had in Christian history. Madame Guyon is generally credited, even by her enemies, as being one of best-known women in church history. Will Durant, in his 11-volume Story of Civilization, recounts the impact of Jeanne Guyon’s life and writings on French history.

At one time this book was publicly burned in France, and yet it has also been received by seeking Christians as one of the most helpful and powerful Christian books ever written. Penned by one of Christianity’s most famous saints, Jeanne Guyon, it has played a major part in the lives of more famous Christians than perhaps any other Christian book. Here is the very first edition written in modern English.

Watchman Nee saw that this book was translated into Chinese, and made available to every new convert of The Little Flock. Fenelon, Count Zinzendorf, John Wesley, the early Quakers, Jessie Penn-Lewis and Hudson Taylor all highly recommended it to the believers of their day.

This book will introduce you to a whole new – and deeper – relationship to Jesus Christ.

Rejection. Ugh! Many of us have been devoured by its ravages, and most of us have also given it out. Praise. Now there’s a happier word! But the sinister tentacles of man’s praise constantly seek to disqualify God’s servants from their highest inheritance. Rejection and Praise are like twin gullies that flank the narrow highway of holiness. Every step counts. For Jesus, man’s opinions were meaningless in light of the exuberant affection and passionate approval of His Father. Learn how to hold your heart before God in a way that pleases Him in the midst of both rejection and praise from people.

      $38.99

Histories of women and American religion have tended to focus on women’s religious activities rather than on women’s religious lives. Studies of early American religion and spirituality have usually depended on the journals and sermons of male preachers. In order to understand the religious lives of ordinary Methodist women, Jean Miller Schmidt has looked at their diaries, letters, spiritual autobiographies, and the accounts of their pious lives and holy deaths that appeared as obituaries in publications like the Methodist Magazine. These powerful stories of faith are part of the shared history of Methodist people.

In June 1996, to celebrate Jurgen Moltmann’s seventieth birthday, a remarkable group of theologians, both Catholic and Protestant, gathered in Tubingen. They spent the day discussing, before a large audience, how their theology had changed or not changed over the previous thirty years. This book is a record of what they said, together with the text of a subsequent television broadcast and an assessment of the day by a distinguished journalist. The participants include: Jurgen Moltmann, his wife Elisabeth Moltmann-Wendel, Eberhard Jungel, Dorothee Solle, Johann Baptist Metz, Norbert Greinacher, Jorg Zink, Philip Potter, and Hans Kung. They cover many areas of theology, from systematic theology to feminist theology to liberation theology. They also show in a striking way how their careers were stamped by the war and the subsequent divisionof Germany, lending an amazing personal touch to their accounts. Jurgen Moltmann is Emeritus Professor of Systematic Theology in the Protestant Theological Faculty at the University of Tubingen.

    • Thomas Merton And The Monastic Vision A Print On Demand Title

      $25.99

Though the outlines of Thomas Merton’s life are generally known to his many readers, the details of his spiritual development are less familiar. Taking up where Merton’s own Seven Storey Mountain ends, this penetrating biography by Lawrence Cunningham explores Merton’s monastic life and his subsequent growth into a modern-day spiritual master.

Cunningham shows that Merton’s prolific writings and his continuing influence can only be understood against the background of his contemplative experience as a Trappist monk. “If one does not understand Merton as a monk,” writes Cunningham, “one does not understand Merton at all.”

Following the trajectory of Merton’s life, starting from his entrance into the Abbey of Gethsemani, Kentucky, in 1941, Cunningham highlights the development of Merton’s monastic life against the cultural background of the American experience and the vast upheavals in the Roman Catholic Church. This unique approach clearly reveals the paradox of Merton’s life. Here was a person deeply involved in the cultural struggles of his day despite having made a conscious decision to draw away from the world in silence and solitude. With both pen and voice, Merton construed to face the most seething issues of the century, including the antiwar and civil-rights movements. Equally intriguing was Merton’s dialogue with Zen Buddhism, a figurative and literal journey to the East that ended with his death in Bangkok in 1968.

Adding to the interest of this balanced and reliable biography is a foreword by Father Timothy Kelly, the current abbot of the Abbey of Gethsemani, who was himself a novice under Merton.

      $66.65

Narrative theology emphasizes the priority of the story of Jesus Christ because the story precedes categorizing or conceptualizing. An exercise in postmodern narrative theology, this book shows how the distinction between narrative and story enables one to read the Bible as a single story that finds its focus in Christ. Loughlin sees the Church as the telling and continuation of Christ’s story, with the Bible and the community as the context in which Christ makes himself known and available for faith.

      SPIRITUAL TORRENTS

This book is a spiritual autobiography in which Jeanne Guyon likens her life to a torrent making its way out of the high mountains down into the canyons and chasms of life, passing through many experiences until finally coming to the spiritual experience of death. From there the torrent experiences resurrection and a life lived in concert with the will of God while still going through many stages of refinement. At last the torrent finds its way into the vast, unlimited sea. Even here the torrent does not totally come to be one with the vast ocean until it has once more passed through final dealings by the Lord.

The reader will find this book to be the saga of one believer’s journey with Christ. It does not serve as a pattern for any other life, but simply allows the reader to see how Guyon viewed the Lord’s work in her life. Nevertheless, this is one of the greatest books ever written on the subject of the cross as it works in the life of the believer.

Based on interviews with more than a hundred gay and lesbian clergy, Dann Hazel constructs a mosiac depicting the ministry of gays and lesbians across the denominational spectrum.

Hazel’s subjects describe the personal challenges faced by gay and lesbian clergy, their efforts to do constructive work in theology in order to build faith communities where gay men and lesbians can flourish spiritually, and the growth of congregations led by gays and lesbians in various denominations.

The book concludes with predictions about the future shape of mainline churches, many of which are currently riven by the issue of gay and lesbian ministry.

These first-person accounts of despair, triumph, wrenching debates within both congregations and entire church polities, and the geneses of new churches make for powerful reading.

    • Church And Tribulation

      $16.99

In the opening chapter, Robert Gundry states, “It is hoped that the following pages will contribute to an understanding and appreciation of the posttribulational position and that it will do so in a manner characterized by ‘the wisdom from above…first pure, then peacable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy’ (James 3:17). In keeping with this expressed desire, the author presents his thesis regarding Christ’s second coming, not as a polemical argument, but as a reasonable and tenable position.
This book propounds the thesis that Jesus will return after the tribulation and that the first resurrection will occur at that time. Dr. Gundry believes that biblical evidence points most naturally to this conclusion. Because of his discerning analysis of Scripture, his careful logic, and the thoughtful presentation of his views, he is one of today’s leading spokesmen for posttribulational eschatology.

Much of the teaching which our Lord Jesus Christ gave when He was on Earth was clothed in parables. To the Scribes and Pharisees, this brought constant confusion, but to Jesus’s disciples it was a vehicle through which the Holy Spirit could reveal the deep truths and principles of the Kingdom. God is still speaking to His people in parables. The realm of prophetic parables is a vehicle which God is restoring to His Church in this last hour for the purpose of revealing present truth. With these thoughts in mind, the author has undertaken to put into print some of the prophetic parables God has given over the past years to various congregations and conference.

    • Ancient Future Faith (Reprinted)

      $34.11

In a world marked by relativism, individualism, pluralism, and the transition from a modern to a postmodern worldview, evangelical Christians must find ways to re-present the historic faith.

In his provocative new work, Ancient-Future Faith, Robert E. Webber contends that present-day evangelicalism is a product of modernity. Allegiance to modernity, he argues, must be relinquished to free evangelicals to become more consistently historic. Empowerment to function in our changing culture will be found by adapting the classical tradition to our postmodern time. Webber demonstrates the implications in the key areas of church, worship, spirituality, evangelism, nurture, and mission.

Webber writes, The fundamental concern of Ancient-Future Faith is to find points of contact between classical Christianity and postmodern thought. Classical Christianity was shaped in a pagan and relativistic society much like our own. Classical Christianity was not an accomodation to paganism but an alternative practice of life. Christians in a postmodern world will succeed, not by watering down the faith, but by being a counter cultural community that invites people to be shaped by the story of Israel and Jesus.

A substantial appendix explores the development of authority in the early church, an important issue for evangelicals in a society that shares many features with the Roman world of early Christians. Students, professors, pastors, and laypeople concerned with the church’s effective response to a postmodern world will benefit from this paradigmatic volume. Informative tables and extensive bibliographies enhance the book’s educational value.

He focuses on three main themes: how the market economy shapes personal identity, through consumption and the experience of paid employment in relation to the work ethic; the impact of the global economy on local cultures; and the effects of technology and global competition on poverty. In Sit, Walk, Stand, Watchman Nee takes an inspiring look at Ephesians and the believer’s association with Christ, the world, and Satan.

Watchman Nee (1903-1972) is remembered for his leadership of an indigenous church movement in China as well as for the books that continue to enrich Christians throughout the world. Beginning in the 1930s, he helped establish local churches in China that were completely independent of foreign missionary organizations and were used to bring many into the kingdom of God. From them came many of the house churches that continued a faithful witness when Western missionaries were forced to leave the country. Arrested in 1952 and found guilty of a large number of false charges, Watchman Nee was imprisoned until his death in 1972.

    • Churchgoing And Christian Ethics

      $120.00

Robin Gill argues that moral communities should take center stage in ethics. This book examines recent evidence about church communities in relation to faith, moral order and love, and shows that churchgoers are distinctive in their attitudes, beliefs and behavior. Some attitudes change over time, and there are several moral disagreements among different groups of churchgoers. Moreover, their values and behavior are shared by many nonchurchgoers also. The distinctiveness of church communities in the modern world is thus real but relative, and is crucial for the task of Christian ethics.
