Poder Vivo – (Spanish)
$14.99It’s time for us to get hold of the Holy Spirit-or rather, to let him get hold of us. Pastor Jim Cymbala of the Brooklyn Tabernacle cuts through the theological clutter about the Holly Spirit with this fundamental truth: We need the Spirit desperately. All our cleverness can’t transform a single crack addict, heal the heart of a rape victim, or draw a jaded businessman to Christ. Only God’s Spirit can do that. Drawing examples from the Bible and from the sidewalks of New York City, Fresh Power show what happens when the Spirit of God moves in your midst. With passion and convictions, Pastor Jim Cymbala of the Brooklyn Tabernacle reminds us that in this sin-torn, heart-broken culture, we cannot do without the Holy Spirit. And we can’t afford to presume his presence. We need to seek him with the same fervor as the early belivers. Discover what happens when the Holy Spirit moves in power. Jim Cymbala shares with you the witness of Scritpure and the stories of men and women whose lives have been transformed. From the healing of the lame man in the book of Acts to the stirring conversion of serial killer David Berkowitz, better known as “Son son Sam” you’ll see how the Spirit accomplishes what no human wisdom or power can produce. Fresh Power will expand your vision of what God can and will do and inspire you to pray like never before of the power of the Spirit in your church – and in you.

Birthing The Sermon
$29.99“For these women, preaching is not one of the tasks of ministry-preach, teach, pastor, govern. Preaching is who they are. Whatever process they follow-which include admitting to writing ‘Saturday night specials’ and grabbing a children’s book to read from the pulpit-preaching is about connecting their lives to the pulse of the congregations, and to the heartbeat of God.”

Size Transitions In Congregations
$38.33Congregations that seek growth are often frustrated at hitting a plateau-caught in a transition zone between sizes. The Alban Institute has long been recognized as a leader in size transition research and learning, and this anthology offers an in-depth collection of resources, through new articles developed for the book as well as previously published and highly regarded pieces that inform and provoke.
In a new essay, Arlin Rothauge, director of the Seabury Institute and author of Sizing Up a Congregation for New Member Ministry, a classic on the subject, offers his reflections on the state of the research and the models that have been used to frame discussion about size transitions. Alban senior consultant Alice Mann describes key findings from her current research on the pastoral-to-program size transition, perhaps the most common and most difficult to address. Other new material focuses on size transition in synagogues; the program-to-corporate transition; and the “awkward size” congregation with the resources of a pastor-centered congregation, but the desire to be program size.

Wrestling With The Divine
$33.33In this important and enlightening book, Christopher Knight advances the work of John Polkinghorne and Arthur Peacocke and explores exciting new possibilities for the notion of revelation. Knight shows how natural processes are the form of divine immanence and the locus of divine action. He probes the psychology of religious experience as a medium of divine revelation. Employing the paradigmatic instance of revelation–the early Christian experience of the risen Jesus–to investigate the psychological basis of revelatory experience, Knight goes on to address its referentiality, authentication, implications for propositional truth, and historical models of revelation. Knight’s affirmation of the sacramental and revelatory potential of creation yields a new understanding of natural theology and opens up to other faiths of the world.

Vos addresses a wide range of questions surrounding both individual and collective eschatology from key passages throughout the Old Testament. In this book, the first in the New Studies in Biblical Theology series, Dr. David Peterson challenges the common assumption that the New Testament views sanctification as primarily a process. He argues that its emphasis falls upon sanctification as a definitive event, “God’s way of taking possession of us in Christ, setting us apart to belong to him and to fulfil his purpose for us.” Simply to identify sanctification with growth in holiness, he contends, obscures teh emphasis and balance of New Testament teaching and creates unrealistic expectations. Throughout Dr Peterson builds his case on the careful exegesis of relevant passages, with a keen eye for the pastoral implications of his findings.Add to cartin stock within 3-5 days of online purchase

Taking Leave Of God
$35.99This was the book which first garnered international celebrity and notoriety for its author and which fire-started a debate about the supernatural claims of Christianity. Rejecting Christian doctrines and metaphysics in favour of the religious consciousness which characterises human identity, Cupitt ‘takes leave’ of God by abandoning objective theism. Because he remained an ordained priest of the Church of England, the author attracted considerable attention and criticism for his position. Indeed, Keith Ward, now Oxford’s Regius Professor of Divinity, wrote an entire book – Holding Fast to God – which attempted to counter Cupitt’s views. Whatever one thinks of the author’s beliefs, Taking Leave of God contributed to one of the most important theological discussions of its time.

10 Commandments : They Still Work
$18.73The secular pundits and pollsters, along with some from the religious community, are trying to convince America that the Ten Commandments were designed for an ancient world. They say these laws are no longer relevant, that the advanced thinking of the modern world can do better. So the Ten Commandments are being removed from public places, and are no longer taught to our children in public schools. Dr. Martin Case believes that, contrary to popular belief, the Ten Commandments were not given only for the ancient world, but for the world today. The truth about the Ten Commandments is that they are a gift from a loving God. Dr. Case shows God’s original purpose and intent of His laws, and how they can be applied to our culture today. We do not need new laws; we need to rediscover and obey the original ten laws God gave us centuries ago. Why? Because they still work!

The New Testament finds many ways to depict Christians’ relationships to their Lord. They are his disciples, sons, daughters, and friends. But it is perhaps too little recognized that they are also his slaves. This study sets out to uncover what it means to be a slave of Christ. Murray Harris begins by assessing the nature of actual slavery in the Greco-Roman world and the New Testament’s attitude towards it. Drawing insights from this, he goes on to unfold the metaphor of slavery to Christ. Among the topics discussed are slavery and spiritual freedom, lordship, ownership, and privilege. Slave of Christ is a model of good biblical theology, providing insights both for further study of the Bible and for practical application. It will be appreciated in both church and academy.Add to cartin stock within 3-5 days of online purchase

At the heart of the Christian faith stands a man, Jesus of Nazaereth. Few people seriously question whether he existed in history. But many, influenced by the more sceptical scholars, doubt that the Christ of orthodox christianity is the same as the Jesus of history. In this important book, historian Paul Barnett lays the doubts to rest. He uncovers the methodological weakness present in some forms of critical scholarship, demonstrating a failure to account for important early evidence about Jesus. Once the evidence is properly marshalled, a picture of Jesus emerges that fits well with orthodox belief in him.Add to cartin stock within 3-5 days of online purchase

Peace
$27.99First appearing during the peace-loving 1970s, this book now receives a welcome reintroduction as part of Chalice Press’s Understanding Biblical Themes series. Brueggemann, professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary, looks at the protean concept of “shalom” and its relation to concerns today for peace and justice. The task is daunting, but Brueggemann tackles it with his characteristic penchant for conceptual clarity. He outlines a broad biblical vision for shalom (“one community embracing all creation… including all those resources and factors which make communal harmony joyous and effective”) and identifies some of its comprising factors (freedom, unity, order, justice, etc.). The second half of the book begins to work out what it means for the church and its people to be a community of shalom. One of the best sections is the new introduction, which is Brueggemann’s own insightful critique of the book (and the era in which it was written). Brueggemann seems just as at home with the New Testament as the Old, and like many seminary educators, his style slides between the pedagogical and the sermonic. Once in a while there’s a clunky cluster of theological terms, but just as often a memorable and poetic turn of phrase. This is another fine example of what Brueggemann does best: squeezing the Bible to produce hard-working theology for the church.

With membership and attendance declining, many churches are revamping their worship services to attract or keep participants, but too often the adaptation becomes nothing more than a Spirit-less reflection of popular culture. Stones for Bread presents some of the different programs for “marketing” worship, clarifies the implications for the integrity of a church’s mission and spiritual life, and proposes some alternative means for rejuvenating worship.

Gospel Handles
$53.31Gospel Handles is an exciting reference tool for preachers, and a devotional resource for everyone!
Pastors are always looking for fresh, imaginative ways to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. With Gospel Handles, you’ll learn new techniques to achieve that goal.
Homiletics professor “Rev” Rossow says: “A Gospel handle involves the selection from a biblical sermon text of an excerpt that contains absolutely no Gospel whatsoever; the preacher then uses this excerpt as an approach, bridge, or handle to an account of the Gospel somewhere else in the Bible. For example, Psalm 121:1 says, ‘I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help.’ That verse contains no explicit Gospel text, but one way to lift up our eyes to the hills for God’s help is to gaze in faith at the person and work of the Lord Jesus on the hill of Calvary. That’s the Gospel-handle technique at work.”
Using the beloved King James version of the Bible, Rossow masterfully provides the reader with Gospel messages in surprising, unexpected places. He does this by analyzing each lesson from Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John for all Sundays and major festivals in the church year. So this book can be used effectively by any pastor in any denomination.
What’s more, Gospel Handles is written in a lucid, readable style. It can easily be used for personal or family devotions by everyone who wants to know more about what God has done and continues to do for them through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

5 Women Of The English Reformation
$19.99Books on the history of the Reformation are filled with the heroic struggles and sacrifices of men. This compelling book by Paul Zahl puts the spotlight on five women – Anne Boleyn, Katharine Parr, Jane Grey, Anne Askew, and Catherine Willoughby – who were themselves powerful theologians and who paid the cost of their reforming convictions with martyrdom, imprisonment, and exile.
As enjoyable to read as its subject matter is fascinating, this book not only portrays important women in church history but also has much to say about the relation of gender to theology, human motivation, and God. An epilogue by Mary Zahl contributes a woman’s view of these remarkable Christian women.

What does it mean to teach English in the name of Christ? With thousands of Christians teaching English as a second or foreign language in hundreds of locations around the world, this has become as urgent question. Some Christian English teachers may consider their teaching simply as a means of service (combined with a bit of adventure). Others may see it only as a mean of getting a visa into a closed country for purposes of evangelism. Don Snow’s well-thought out details of how to bear witness, engage in ministry, serve the poor, contribute to peace, and build bridges of understanding between churches clearly show the special role in Christian missions that Christian English teachers have.

Bringing the stories of Jesus to life for the contemporary reader, Robin Griffith-Jones revives the original power and the intent of each of the four gospels. He presents a lively discussion of how and why each gospel was written, considering the substance and style of the testimony itself as well as the unique context of each story. Mark’s gospel tells the rebel’s story of Jesus as a failed revolutionary whose mission mysteriously succeeds. For Luke, Jesus is a heroic, compassionate social revolutionary who confidently and mercifully dies on behalf of all humanity. John’s gospel is a mystic’s interpretation of the divinity of Jesus told in powerful poetic language.“Who do you say I am?” Each gospel offers its own answer to Jesus’ question, influenced by the context of its writing and the personality of its writer. All four gospels taken together provide what one alone could not: a remarkably full and compelling presentation of Jesus and his message.

Beyond The Worship Wars
$46.66Almost every congregation is experiencing tension over worship. Many congregations have been participating in a renaissance of worship known as the “liturgical movement” and have reclaimed worship forms that have served the church for centuries. Yet because the church today is operating in a radically changed cultural environment, many people in our society do not understand liturgical worship and thus we must find language, music, themes, and images that speak to the unchurched, spiritually seeking person.
In Beyond the Worship Wars, Thomas G. Long discusses the nine characteristics of vital and faithful worship practiced by a wide range of “third-way” congregations-all characteristics that make for vital and faithful worship.

What does canonical status imply about texts that are included in the Bible,as well as texts that are excluded from it ? With dazzling skill,George Aichele interrogates the form and function of canon as a mechanism that both reveals and conceals texts from its readers.

Reformed Worship
$30.0014 Chapters
Additional Info
Pastors, seminarians, and worship leaders often find themselves in a quandary when it comes to worship planning. At one end of the spectrum are congregations that worship in ways that may be amusing, interesting, and entertaining but lack a sense of tradition. At the other end are congregations that go through the motions of repeating inherited patterns of worship, even when those patterns have lost their meaning or are boring or trivial. Finding ways to weave together the tradition inherited from the past and the culture of a particular community can be a difficult task. But the Reformed tradition has, from its beginning, tried to take both tradition and local culture equally seriously. Here, is discussions on the history of Christian worship; baptism; the Lord’s Supper; the Service for the Lord’s Day; music; prayer; the setting for worship; the church year; weddings, funerals, and other special occasions for worship; and worship style, Howard Rice and James Huffstrutler do what no other book does-they explain the Reformed liturgical tradition and give applications to actual settings of worship in congregational life.

At the same time, Rensberger shows how these letters face the problems of theological disagreement and church division, and how they can help Christians today better understand theological diversity and the struggle for church unity.

Ecclesiastes : Ancient Wisdom When All Else Fails
$18.99IVP Print On Demand Title
Recipient of a 2002 Christianity Today Award of Merit! “Meaningless!” says Ecclesiastes. “All is meaningless!” We live. We work. We die. Even with our best efforts to find lasting enjoyment and significance, we are faced with the conclusion that there is nothing new under the sun. Despite this gloomy assessment (or perhaps because of it), people have been drawn to the Middle Eastern wisdom of this enigmatic book for thousands of years. Its brutal honesty doesn’t flinch from life’s difficulties or its thorniest problems. The new translation and interpretive paraphrase provided here by T. M. Moore artfully unveils the ancient mysteries of this often puzzling book. By its very cynicism, Ecclesiastes seems to suggest that to find what is of enduring value we must embrace the hard things, not avoid them. With notes and a useful study guide, Moore skillfully shows us that the dark side will have its say. The question is, will it have the last word?

Mysticism, in the sense of a “longing for God,” has been present in all times, cultures, and religions. But Soelle believes it has never been more important than in this age of materialism and fundamentalism. The antiauthoritarian mystical element in each religion leads to a community of free spirits and resistance to the death-dealing aspects of our contemporary culture. Religion in the third millennium, Soelle argues, either will be mystical or it will be dead. Therefore, Soelle identifies strongly with the hunger of New Age searchers but laments the “religious fast food” they devour. Today, a kind of “democratized mysticism” of those without much religious background flourishes. This mystical experience is not drawn so much of the tradition as out of contemporary experiences. In that sense, each of us is a mystic, and Soelle’s work seeks to give theological depth, clarity, and direction.
This, her magnum opus, conjoins Soelle’s deep religious knowledge and wisdom with her passion for social!justice into a work destined to be a classic of religious literature.

Who Killed Homer
$19.99For over two millennia, familiarity with the literature, art, philosophy, and values of the classical world has been synonymous with education itself. But today classical education is rapidly disappearing from American high school and university curricula, and as a result we are in danger of becoming illiterate about the ideas that created Western civilization.
In Who Killed Homer? acclaimed classicists Victor Davis Hanson and John Heath explain what has been sacrificed, who did it and why. Hanson and Heath argue that if we lose our knowledge of the Greeks, then we lose our understanding of who we are. With straightforward advice and informative readings of the great Greek texts, the authors show how we might still save classics and the Greeks for future generations. Who Killed Homer? is must reading for anyone who agrees that knowledge of classics acquaints us with the beauty and perils of our own culture.

The debate over the veracity of modern translations of the Bible continues to create confusion in the minds of believers who know that Scripture lies at the heart of the Christian faith. Pastors and church members alike need solid, sensitive answers to the ongoing questions they confront in ministry regarding the KJV. This honest examination of the “King James Only” position offers a balancred and scholarly presentation of the issues based on biblical and historical evidence. Shadows Of Things To Come
$18.99A fascinating look at Christ’s relationship with His disciples and the activities of the early church so that we can better understand the present and predict the future.
“One of the greatest sources of prophetic vision is found by better understanding our past,” says Rick Joyner. “I studied Christ’s interaction with the apostles as well as the life of the early church to be obedient to a heavenly vision in which I was told that I would not be able to accurately foresee the future until I understood the past.” In this important book Joyner looks at the life and ministry of the apostles and of later generations so that Christians today can close the openings the enemy has used to gain entry and do his deadly work. He examines the successes and failures of Christians of the past so we can better understand how to be God’s servants today.

Beyond Retribution : A New Testament Vision For Justice Crime And Punishmen
$33.99Recently a growing number of Christians have actively promoted the concept of “restorative justice” and attempted to develop programs for dealing with crime based on restorative principles. But is this approach truly consistent with the teaching of Scripture? To date, very little has been done to test this claim. Beyond Retribution fills a gap by plumbing the New Testament on the topics of crime, justice, and punishment.
Christopher Marshall first explores the problems involved in applying ethical teachings from the New Testament to mainstream society. He then surveys the extent to which the New Testament addresses criminal justice issues, looking in particular at the concept of the justice of God in the teachings of Paul and Jesus. He also examines the topic of punishment, reviewing the debate in social thinking over the ethics and purpose of punishment_including capital punishment_and he advocates a new concept of “restorative punishment.” The result of this engaging work is a biblically based challenge to imitate the way of Christ in dealing with both victims and offenders.

Genetic Turning Points A Print On Demand Title
$38.99360 Pages
Additional Info
Human genetic intervention could be considered a microcosm of the larger field of bioethics. According to James Peterson, “it raises almost all the basic issues addressed in a standard bioethics course, from informed consent to the goals of medicine.” Peterson argues that it is imperative to view human genetic intervention from an ethical framework, particularly as the technology in that intervention advances at an exponential rate.Peterson’s goal in Genetic Turning Points was to tie together some of the various questions related to human genetic intervention (better known, perhaps, as genetic manipulation or genetic engineering). He begins with a look at medical technology and moves on to major issues including genetic research, genetic testing, genetic drugs, and genetic surgery (physical manipulation of human genes in the body). The issues are raised in a progressive approach. Genetic research is the foundation for genetic testing and genetic drugs, thus issues related to genetic research are looked at first, and then issues related to genetic testing and drugs. Since genetic surgery techniques are still being perfected, and are not as available as the other technologies, Peterson looks at this vital issue last.
Christians, according to LeRoy Waters, have tended to view human genetics from one of two positions (not usually both): cosmic theology and casuistic analysis. Cosmic theology simply means looking at the grand scheme of God’s plan for humanity; casuistic analysis is that which addresses the questions of practice. Peterson hopes to bring the two positions together in a cogent and effective manner. He feels that one’s understanding of God’s plan for humanity (our purpose) shapes the concrete decisions of life (the practice). Ideally, Christians should be aware of both how purpose shapes practice and how practice questions purpose. Thus, Peterson sees the medical and ethical issues as eminently practical, but defined and shaped by one’s metaphysical beliefs.
Genetic Turning Points is laid out in a progressive manner, but topics can stand on their own. Chapters are generally short and the indexes and cross-references allow one to find a particular topic quickly and easily. Since there are fifteen chapters, the book easily lends itself to undergraduate or postgraduate study (one chapter a week), but is not solely for students. It is also for professionals (doctors, clergy, etc.) and for educated lay people. Its information is timely and it

As the fruit of her non-traditional ministry directed toward those who have never been part of a church or who have been “turned off” or “disenfranchised” by the established church, McCoy’s short, to-the-point messages effectively and relevantly communicate the good news to anyone who is searching for an experience of the Divine. Readers of these sermons will be connected to a deep sense of purpose and enriched by God’s amazing love and grace.
