Multigenerational Congregation : Meeting The Leadership Challenge
$43.33Congregations need to learn new cultural languages and practices in order to speak to and be heard by new generations of people. But how do congregations enter the wilderness of ministry with these new generations when many of those in the entourage do not appreciate the trip?
In contrast to many writers about church growth, Rendle works with three important observations:
Most congregations are not “pure markets,” discrete groups with uniform values and behaviors, that can be targeted to the exclusion of all other audiences;
Some of the differences and discomforts experienced in the congregation are based on the members’ tenure, or length of membership, rather than their age;
Leadership in congregations is not a matter of marketplace savvy but of spiritual authenticity in which we continue to shape our faith tradition to be heard and understood by a changing culture.
Rendle shows us how to talk with and really understand one generational cohort while another cohort is present “looking over one’s shoulder.” Foreword by Lovett H. Weems, Jr., President, Saint Paul School of Theology.Add to cartin stock within 3-5 days of online purchase

Lighten Our Darkness (Revised)
$31.18Revised and with a Foreword by David J. Monge
In this great classic, Douglas John Hall analyzes the inadequacies and dangers of the officially optimistic society of North America and its officially optimistic religion. He then appeals to the thin tradition of Luther and Kierkegaard within Christian history as a way into the darkness of our time. He eloquently appeals to this theology of the cross as not only pointing toward a new image of human nature for Christians today but also affording us a glimmer of true light. Students, laypersons, clergy, and many others will find here a gripping critique of modern Western culture and a way toward genuine Christian faith in challenging times.

Disciples Redeemed
$9.93Though it is perfect for the Easter season, this series of monologues about the lives of the Disciples following Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension, may be used any time throughout the year. Congregations will learn the often overlooked post-Easter story of each of the Disciples as they never have before.
The staging of Disciples Redeemed can be one with a table set up like the last supper table with the Disciples, except for Judas, seated around the table. The story begins with Saul giving his monologue at floor level with the audience and ends with Paul at the table with the rest of the Disciples. The monologue of Judas is optional.
Suggestions for staging and optional costumes are included.

Table Talk
$7.43This service requires little preparation and involves only three readers. The build up to Holy Communion is dramatic and scriptural, climaxing in the betrayal of Judas, the sense of corporate guilt and the need for forgiveness.
In Table Talk we hear conversations between Jesus and his friends, enemies and those who are indifferent. These talks occur at tables where Jesus has come as a guest. The service culminates with Jesus serving as host to his disciples.
In his own table story we learn that whether or not we come to the great banquet, the table of the Lord will be filled. It forces us to ask that if we do come and receive the bread and wine what will Jesus say to us? What will we say to him? How can we not find our faith strengthened, our love enlarged, and our understanding deepened by the table talk of Jesus?

Literary Companion To The Lectionary
$48.33This beautiful book offers poems and literary pieces for Sundays and principal feasts throughout the liturgical year. Each selection relates to an aspect of the Scripture readings for the Eucharist in the Revised Common Lectionary, the Roman Catholic lectionary, and the Book of Common Prayer. Drawn from many centuries and many countries including Britain, Ireland, North America, Africa, and Australia, these readings bridging literature and liturgy can prompt private prayer or public worship through imaginative engagement. Christianity On Trial
$15.95Vincent Carroll and David Shiflett do not shrink from confronting the tragedies that have been perpetrated in the name of Christianity. But they contend that the current fashionable emphasis on the dark side of the Christian record is an instance of willful historical illiteracy.
In Christianity on Trial, Carroll and Shiflett dispassionately and systematically dissect the charges against Christianity-specifically that it has justified racism and misogyny, encouraged ignorance, and promoted the despoliation of the environment and even genocide. Then, in a narrative whose intellectual elegance and verve calls up comparisons to How the Irish Saved Civilization, they show how in fact the Christian tradition has not only injected morality into our political order, but softened brutal practices and confining superstitions, created the foundation for intellectual inquiry, and cultivated the charitable impulse.
Christianity on Trial challenges readers of all beliefs-even those with a belief in disbelief itself-to question the anti-religious bigotry that thrives in our intellectual world and to reevaluate the role of Christianity not only as a source of consolation but of enlightenment and human liberation as well.

As the unsurpassed Christian epic poem, Dante’s Divine Comedy provides not only far more personality and emotional depth than the pagan epics, it opens up all the issues on which Western history turns-truth, beauty, goodness, sin, sanctification, and triumph. In this guide, Peter J. Leithart brings his rich biblical-typological insight to bear in opening up the Comedy for students, high school and up, mainly the sort of kids who keep looking for the jokes in the comedy. After examining the meaning and place of the courtly love tradition leading up to Dante, the heart of the guide walks us carefully through the craft and symbolisms of each progressive stage – Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Each section contains helpful study questions.

Reading Galatians Phillippians And 1 Thessalonians (Revised)
$40.29Cousar interprets three letters of Paul, each of which shows him in a different light. In Galatians, the apostle contends for the gospel against a group of Jewish Christian missionaries who have come into the congregation. In Philippians, Paul addresses his favorite community in intimate terms to offer thanks for a gift they have sent him and to urge them to maintain unity in the face of opposing forces. 1 Thessalonians, Paul’s first letter, is written to encourage the congregation in that city to lead lives worthy of the gospel.
The commentary traces the movement of the letters, paragraph by paragraph, and pays particular attention to the literary character of the writing, and to the theological implications of the text for the church today.

Raising The Roof
$43.33Pastoral-to-program size change is frequently described as the most challenging of growth transitions for congregations. Now Alban senior consultant Alice Mann, author of The In-Between Church: Navigating Size Transitions in Congregations, addresses the difficulties of that transition in this resource designed specifically for a congregational learning team.
Conceptualized and developed by Mann for an Alban on-line seminar program test event conducted with 12 congregations in transition, her newest book features a five-step process enabling the learning team to engage a wider circle of congregational leaders and members in study, discernment, and planning. Never-before published resources include discussion of a major new concept-passive barriers to growth-plus Mann’s “System Change Index” tool to help congregations measure their progress from pastoral-size to program-size ways of operating.
From preparing the congregation’s board and members, selecting the person to guide the learning process, and recruiting the learning team, to creating and celebrating a plan for congregational learning and action, Mann provides all the resources a congregation needs to address this significant size transition period.

Anatomy Of God
$19.99208 Pages
Additional Info
Special Order Title
God is a Spirit, yet, throughout Scripture, He describes Himself in anatomical terms and images we are familiar with. His eyes wink and squint. His mouth whispers, His smile radiates, and He inclines an attentive ear to our cries. God has hands, arms, and fingers that build, shape, give, protect, and deliver. His heart can be broken, and His nostrils flare when He is angry. His face reveals His glory and His favor. This book God is an invitation to see God at work in us, for us, and through us. With appropriate humor and humility, Dr. Kenneth Ulmer introduces us to the Father as we seldom see Him-touchable, emotional, and accessible. He navigates the seemingly unfathomable depths of the person of God with a pastor’s care, a teacher’s skill, and a preacher’s passion, guiding us into deeper, more meaningful communion. This book is for every man or woman who desires to know God, or to know Him better. It is for anyone who questions God’s closeness, or doubts His concern. The Anatomy of God brings us closer to God by bringing God closer to us.Add to cartin stock within 3-5 days of online purchase

The woman at the well; The adulterous woman who was nearly stoned to death; Cleopas’ wife whom Jesus may have met on the road to Emmaus; The woman who touched Jesus’ cloak in order to be healed; Mary and Martha; Phoebe; Prisca; Pilate’s wife; The bride at the wedding of Cana.
As in her first volume, the book includes references to the biblical passages along with study questions, making this an excellent book for group study.

Faith Victorious : An Introduction To Luthers Theology
$31.18In Faith Victorious Pinomaa presents a highly lucid and penetrating discussion of some of the major themes in the theology of the great Reformer. Numerous quotations from Luther himself enliven the treatment of such subjects as revelation, redestination, justification, the ministry, and the sacraments. In addition to presenting the results of his own research, the author provides skillful resumes of some of the leading recent studies on such controversial problems and emphases as the bondage of the will, the wrath of God, the Spirit and the Word, marriage, vocation, and church and state.
Throughout his book Pinomaa is concerned to show the existential character of faith in Luther’s understanding and how that is determinative for all that is involved in being a Christian.

Dont Forget The Child
$17.43Alex Gondola says that in our modern culture we sometimes “experience Christmas at its worst: overcommercialized, expensive, exhausting, nearly devoid of spiritual significance.” In this collection of twenty cogent and inspiring sermons for Advent and Christmas, he reminds us of the key to putting the season in its proper perspective — “Don’t forget the child!” For it is only when we are drawn nearer to the child of Bethlehem, celebrating the simple beauties of the stable, that we can escape from the rush of the season into the divine light of saving grace heralded by the birth of God’s Son. This volume is an exceptional source of inspiration for sermon preparation, but it’s also excellent for personal devotions exploring the meaning of Advent and Christmas. It’s a great Christmas gift!

Curious Commercials
$18.68Curious Commercials approaches the Christmas event from a different perspective. Daniel Weitner doesn’t treat the nativity as a kind of warm and fuzzy feeling of longing for universal peace that envelops the earth around the end of the year or as a sign pointing to something greater in our lives. In trenchant messages that are liberally sprinkled with contemporary illustrations, he reminds us that to know what Christmas is all about, we don’t have to look outside Bethlehem…beyond the manger…or past the baby Jesus. Instead we should focus on the birth of Jesus the Redeemer – it is the wonderful event!

$12.43These services can be used by any number of participants, and include an order of service. Paradoxes Of The Passion examines the circumstances leading up to the crucifixion of an itinerant preacher from Galilee. What Shall I Do, Then, With Jesus Who Is Called Christ? brings us face to face with Pilate’s question that has echoed down the centuries.
Each of the Tenebrae services in this booklet can be used by any number of participants. An order of service for your bulletin preparations is also included.
Paradoxes Of The Passion brings to the worshiping congregation the circumstances leading up to the crucifixion of an itinerant preacher from Galilee who was no less than the long-awaited Jewish Messiah. The seven paradoxes are interspersed with hymns and prayers.
What Shall I Do, Then, With Jesus Who Is Called Christ? To Pilate’s surprise the crowd sought freedom for the murderer Barabbas rather than for Jesus. Pilate then asked the question that has echoed down the centuries to every man, woman, and child who has ever heard the Gospel: “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” In this thought-provoking Good Friday Tenebrae service, Douglas Meyer explores how various key characters in the Passion story answered that question. Then he considers how The person in the pew answers that question today.

On The Way To Bethlehem
$9.93Richard Goodlin writes: “Having been born in Bethlehem (Pennsylvania), I wondered what it would be like to get a letter from the IRS stating I had to go back to Bethlehem for the purpose of taxation. This gave rise to On The Way To Bethlehem.”
The assigned scripture lessons for Advent in the lectionary present themes and concepts, but there is little in the way of a story that flows from one week to the next. In these dialogues Goodlin engages people in the unfolding drama of events that lead up to the birth of Jesus, as well as the story of the life of Jesus.
These dialogues may be performed as a readers’ theater and few props are needed. Costuming is optional.

Carpenters Child
$9.93This Christmas Eve service centers on the story of Leah, a young girl from Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth. It is a story of seeming tragedy, despair and restored hope — of a loving daughter, her carpenter father, and the trials they face when he is branded a leper. It could be argued that the title should be The Carpenter’s Children because it refers not only to Leah, but also to the infant Messiah and all people of Christ.
The entire service is about 45-60 minutes in length depending on optional inclusions (such as solos or choir anthems) and can be done very effectively by one liturgist. It can also be split into two or three parts and performed as a readers’ theater, or with characters silently acting out the story as it is being narrated.
A full order of worship, staging instructions, a “children’s moment,” and production and lighting suggestions accompany the story of The Carpenter’s Child.

Reaching For The Invisible God Study Guide (Student/Study Guide)
$12.99In the book Reaching for the Invisible God Philip Yancey steers clear of trite detours, inviting readers to travel through the most difficult parts of pursuing a relationship with the transcendent God. Making use of his wide experience and a rich well of stories, Yancey considers honestly the predicaments of human existence, that we are distracted with daily routines like work and school, we open up the computer more than we open our Bibles, and we seek success instead of God. We forget God and become guilty of worshipping the impossible while failing to believe in the possible–that the relationship of the grace God extends to us daily. In the Bible we can and will encounter God’s loving and gracious personality. Without cliches, Yancey reminds us that doubt and difficulty, two seeming foes of friendship with God, can actually spur intimacy with him.

Theology Of Compassion
$45.00“The wide-scale rejection of metaphysics today has become the test of the postmodern. In this volume, Oliver Davies argues for a renewal of metaphysics, as the language of createdness, based not in a return to outmoded concepts of essence, but in a dynamic new understanding of ontology as narrataive and performance. His repairing of the western metaphysical tradition is grounded both in the divine self-naming in Exodus which, for the rabbis, identified God’s presence in the world with God’s compassionate acts, and in the compassionate resistance of Etty Hillesum and Edith Stein to the violence of the Holocaust. Building upon a new metaphysics of compassion which is attentive to the deepest histories of the contemporary world, Davies offers a renewed systematic theology of divine speech and relation, focused in Jesus Christ who, as the triadic “”Word”” of God, speaks creatively at the heart of human culture and action, and, as the redeeming “”Compassion”” of God, regenerates the world. Bound Only Once
$23.33The problems with Open theism lie deeper than most critiques suggest. This book interacts not only with the truth claims of Open theism but also its distorted aesthetic and ethical assumptions that do so much work in that program.
Open theists characterize the God of classical Christian theism as a distant, despotic, micromanaging, petty, Mr. Burns sovereign, with little time for nonsense or tissues. They depict the god of Open theism as a nineties sort of guy, ready to enter into new experiences, feel our pain, and link pinkies into an unknown future. Open theists insist that God has knowledge, but not all knowledge, certainly not knowledge of the future acts of free beings and some statues. Such Open theistic inferences reveal a deep-seated devotion to Enlightenment categories and narrow unpoetic imaginations.
Ideas have destinations, and one of the consequences of our trying to read the Scriptures without any poetry in our souls will be the eventual destruction of any possibility of ministering to souls. Just imagine the hymn writer trying to lift up the downcast. “I know not what the future holds, but I know Who also doesn’t know much about it either.”
Contributors include the following: Thomas Ascol, John Frame, Phillip Johnson, Douglas Jones, Peter Leithart, John MacArthur Jr., Ben Merkle, Joost Nixon, Steve Schlissel, R.C. Sproul Jr., and Douglas Wilson.

Shape Of Sola Scriptura
$35.00In what shape do we find the doctrine of sola Scriptura today? Many modern Evangelicals see it as a license to ignore history and the creeds in favor of a more splintered approach to the Christian living. In the past two decades, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox apologists have strongly tried to undermine sola Scriptura as unbiblical, unhistorical, and impractical. But these groups rest their cases on a recent, false take on sola Scriptura.
The ancient, medieval, and classical Protestant view of sola Scriptura actually has a quite different shape than most opponents and defenders maintain. Therein lies the goal of this book an intriguing defense of the ancient (and classical Protestant) doctrine of sola Scriptura against the claims of Rome, the East, and modern Evangelicalism.

Paul And The New Perspective
$41.99Understanding Paul and his conversion to Christianity is imperative for a thorough knowledge of the New Testament. In Paul and the New Perspective Seyoon Kim develops his argument that the origin of Paul’s gospel lies in two places–his radical conversion at Damascus and his usage of the Jesus tradition in light of Damascus. This new way of looking at Paul further explains how Paul made strong distinctions between the Spirit and the flesh/law, with further implications for his doctrine of justification. A departure from the New Perspective School represented by James D. G. Dunn, Kim’s Paul and the New Perspective offers a thorough and extensive argument for the foundation off the gospel that Paul spread in the first century.

Politics In The Order Of Salvation
$45.99Where should John Wesley be located on the political spectrum? As a fanatical Tory, politically conservative in his fidelity to the British monarchy, advocation of taxation without representation, and opposition to the American Revolution or as an emerging proponent of political liberalism in his condemnation of slavery, defense of individual rights and liberties, and support of government aid to combat social problems like poverty and hunger? Weber argues for a much more nuanced reading of Wesley’s political thought, which labels Wesley as an “organic constitutionalist,” standing in the same political tradition as Richard Hooker and Edmund Burke. Weber’s historical and theological study also turns constructive, as he challenges Wesley’s antidemocratic and antirepublican sentiments by employing Wesley’s “political image of God” within the larger context of the ordo salutis (order of salvation). A superb contribution to Wesleyan studies, with implications reaching into the fields of theology, political theory, and social ethics. Weber is Professor Emeritus of Social Ethics at Candler School of Theology, Emory University.

Journey To Jesus
$29.99In this book, Robert Webber proposes an alternative: a model of worship that emphasizes the fact that those who come to worship are at very different points in their spiritual lives. Rather than ignore these differences or gear all worship to those already established in the faith, Webber argues that churches should openly recognize the stages of faith through which their members are passing, structure their worship and ministry to celebrate these stages, and openly encourage Christians to move from spiriual infancy to maturity in Christ.

God Sense : Reading The Bible For Preaching
$23.99Throughout the modern period, history has been the dominant lens through which preachers have viewed the biblical text. The historical-critical method, with its emphasis on the context of a scriptural text’s origins, has been the principal, or sole, tool with which preachers have approached the question of the text’s meaning. Preachers have been in danger of losing the Bible as revelation and with that losing the rich varieties of God-centered meanings that our ancient forebears understood were the purpose of Scripture. He then demonstrates how a critical and informed understanding of the “spiritual” meanings of the text, rather than importing meaning into the text, as is often claimed, opens new possibilities for a faithful proclamation of the biblical witness

When Suffering Persists
$19.95The pain of loss may pass quickly, or suffering may go on and on. For people of faith, the resulting crisis may be deeper than the loss itself. We look for ways to comfort those who are hurting. But sometimes, in spite of our good intentions, the cliches and simplistic theology we offer only add to their pain and misery. In When Suffering Persists, Frederick W. Schmidt explores ways to understand suffering, and offers a theology that takes the devastating character of suffering seriously, one that truly allows us to help people in pain.

Divine Becoming : Rethinking Jesus And Incarnation
$38.33In this creative and insightful work, Burns seeks to contrue the significance of Jesus and his incarnation through the category of participation, the ability to enter the experiences of others. This notion enables her to anchor and illumine the tradition’s central theological claims about Jesus and to show that incarnation is present to some extent in all people, in all religions, indeed in God’s own life.

Critical Social Theory

But he also explains the reconception of critical theory in the work of Jurgen Haberma, especially in ideas about interpretation, praxis, communicative action, and civil society. Finally, Simpson shows how Christian theology and Christian congregations can employ critical theory to retrieve their prophetic vocation in the life of our society.

Case Against Q
$99.91Q is a hypothetical entity, part of the standard solution to the Synoptic Problem – the study of the inter-relationship of Matthew, Mark and Luke. This solution supposes that Matthew and Luke made independent use not only of Mark but also another source – now lost – called “Q”. Belief in its existence is commonplace, but there have always been doubters. Mark Goodacre is one of them. In The Case Against Q, Goodacre presents a careful, balanced and detailed critque of the Q hypothesis, examining the most important arguments of Q’s proponents. He offers new arguments and fresh reflections, creating a more plausible picture of Synoptic relationships than has ever been available.
