    • Roots Of Rabbinic Judaism

      $32.99

In a bold challenge to the long-held scholarly notion that Rabbinic Judaism was already an established presence during the Second Temple period, Gabriele Boccaccini here argues that Rabbinic Judaism was actually a daring reform movement that developed following the destruction of the Jerusalem temple and that only took shape in the first centuries of the common era. Through careful analysis of Second Temple sources, Boccaccini explores the earliest roots of the Rabbinic system of thought in the period from the Babylonian exile to the Maccabean revolt, or from Ezekiel to Daniel. He argues convincingly that a line of thought links Rabbinic Judaism back to Zadokite Judaism through the mediation of the Pharisaic movement. Roots of Rabbinic Judaism is sure to be widely debated by all interested in the origins and development of modern Judaism.

    • Yahweh Is Exalted In Justice

      $38.33

Focusing on Yahweh, the “God of Justice,” Leclerc discusses how each of Isaiah’s three parts emphasizes justice in its own unique way. In Isaiah 1-39 justice is fidelity and judgment. In Isaiah 40-55 it is treated as a manifestation of Yahweh’s sovereignty and incomparability; Yahweh and his servant are the exclusive agents of justice. And in Isaiah 56-66 it is an obligation of the covenant that can be realized only through divine intervention. In addition to providing an overview of the importance of justice in the Hebrew Bible, Leclerc addresses liturgical issues through an analysis of those Isaiah passages that appear in the lectionary readings.

    • Human Being : Jesus And The Enigma Of The Son Of Man

      $56.66

The epithet “the son of the man” (or “the Human Being”) in the Gospels has been a highly debated topic. Wink uses this phrase to explore not only early Christology but the anthropology articulated in the Gospels. Jesus apparently avoided designations such as Messiah, Son of God, or God, though these titles were given by his disciples after his death and resurrection. But Jesus is repeatedly depicted as using the obscure expression “the Human Being” as virtually his only form of self-reference.

Wink explores how Jesus’ self-referential phrase came to be universalized as the “Human Being” or “Truly Human One.” The Human Being is a catalytic agent for transformation, providing the form and lure and hunger to become who we were meant to be, or more properly perhaps, to become who we truly are.

The implications of this are profound, Wink argues. We are freed to go on the journey that Jesus charted rather than to worship the journey of Jesus. We can rescue Jesus from the baggage of christological beliefs added by the church. We are enabled to strip away the heavy accretion of dogma that installed Jesus as the second person of the trinity. Now he can be available to anyone seeking to realize the Human Being within. Jesus becomes uniquely a criterion of humanness. He shows us something of what it means to become human, but not enough to keep us from having to discover our true humanity ourselves. That means we are to be co-creators with God.

    • Forbidden Glory : Portraits Of Pride

      $23.73

None of us can accurately foresee the changes that time will bring. In 1973, my first book, Let Us Praise, swept across the Charismatic bookstore shelves and conference book tables. We were all excited with the glory of praise and how to release that glory verbally, melodiously, and demonstratively. The truths in that book fed praise conventions and worship conventions throughout the Christian world.

Like David, I can affirm that “I have been young, and now am old” (Psalm 37:25). In that first book, nearly sixty years ago, I excitedly embraced God’s glory, but in this, my final book, written while dying of bone cancer, I am concerned with another glory, the Forbidden Glory. It seems that the glory God chose to share with us was insufficient to fill our egos, and we have reached out to embrace the glory that belongs exclusively to Him.

This should not surprise us. Lucifer did it in Heaven, Eve did it in Eden and the disciples did it when ministering with Jesus on the shores of Galilee. But will we use this as an excuse for our prideful behavior? Or could we better use it as a tutorial to guide us around the destructive pathway into which pride seeks to steer us? I trust that your decision will be the latter.

    • Speaking Of Sin

      $19.92

In Speaking of Sin, Barbara Brown Taylor brings her fresh perspective to a cluster of words that often cause us discomfort and have widely fallen into neglect: sin, damnation, repentance, penance, and salvation. She asks, Why, then, should we speak of sin anymore? The only reason I can think of is because we believe that God means to redeem the world through us.

Abandoning the language of sin will not make sin go away. Human beings will continue to experience alienation, deformation, damnation and death no matter what we call them. Abandoning the language will simply leave us speechless before them, and increase our denial of their presence in our lives. Ironically, it will also weaken the language of grace, since the full impact of forgiveness cannot be felt apart from the full impact of what has been forgiven.

Contrary to the prevailing view, Taylor calls sin a helpful, hopeful word. Naming our sins, she contends, enables us to move from guilt to grace. In recovering this lost language of salvation in our worship and in the fabric of our individual lives, we have an opportunity to take part in the divine work of redemption.

    • Womans Place : Leadership In The Church

      $17.99

“Women have achieved relative parity with men in virtually every area of society–except the church,” writes C.S. Cowles, challenging the long-held practice and belief that a Christian woman’s place is in the pew but not in the pulpit, lectern, boardroom, or other places of leadership. Through a careful study of key biblical texts, Cowles refutes what he terms the church’s “institutional discrimination against women” and calls for it to open leadership positions to “whomever the Holy Spirit should call and whomever evidences gifts for public ministry, without regard to race, social class, or gender.” “It is time for the church to discover the richness, beauty, and spiritual power that can be released only through the full expression of women’s unique gifts and special sensitivities.”

    • Mandaeans A Print On Demand Title

      $40.99

This book brings together for the first time a complete introduction to Mandaeanism, a fascinating branch of Gnosticism that survives into modern times.

The first part of the book provides a historical and sociological introduction to Mandaeanism. Edmondo Lupieri begins by portraying the traditional way of life of the Mandaeans in Iraq and Iran and introduces readers to the world of Mandaean ideas and their literary production. He then reconstructs the history of the interaction between Mandaeanism and the Western world, beginning with Ricoldo di Montecroce, a thirteenth- century Italian monk who is the first known European to write about the Mandaeans, and continuing on to present scholarship. Lastly, Lupieri provides a critical analysis of Mandaean written and oral traditions concerning their origin, history, and self-understanding – including their view that they are the only ones on earth who possess the true and oldest faith.

The second part of the book is an anthology of translated Mandaean texts with notes. This gathering of writings presents the spiritual world of Mandaeanism with fragments of mythical-theological texts and pages of ethical and historical meditations. Special attention is given in the notes to the contraposition against other religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and other minor groups) and to the ideas Mandaeans have of biblical and historical figures.

Expertly researched, engagingly written, and enhanced with pictures of Mandaean art, this volume will interest a wide range of readers.

Our quest to live as God’s people calls us to listen for words of wisdom from our “channel markers”–for life is a journey with choices to be made, values to be pursued, and priorities to be set. In this book, William Enright describes the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount as channel markers and offers new insights on these key parts of the Bible. Responding to our church’s hunger for ethical guidance, Enright masterfully examines each commandment and the Sermon on the Mount and explores why these texts are relevant today.

    • Pastoral Theology In The Classical Tradition

      $24.95

Modern pastoral care, Andrew Purves believes, has been overly influenced by psychological theory and too often uninformed by historical practice. The result is a pastoral practice that has diminished the reality of God. In this book, Purves aims to reclaim pastoral theology as a theological discipline. He does this by examining classical texts from the tradition, texts that have the, and he argues that a thoughtful reading of these works–by Gregory of Nazianus, John Chrysostom, Gregory the Great, Martin Bucer, and Richard Baxter–will force a reevaluation of many of the assumptions that shape contemporary pastoral work. He includes a brief biography of each author, introduces the major themes in each writer’s pastoral theology, and discusses the issues relevant to pastoral work today.

    • Good To Great

      $35.00

      The Challenge
Built to Last, the defining management study of the nineties, showed how great companies triumph over time and how long-term sustained performance can be engineered into the DNA of an enterprise from the verybeginning.

But what about the company that is not born with great DNA? How can good companies, mediocre companies, even bad companies achieve enduring greatness?

      The Study
For years, this question preyed on the mind of Jim Collins. Are there companies that defy gravity and convert long-term mediocrity or worse into long-term superiority? And if so, what are the universal distinguishing characteristics that cause a company to go from good to great?

      The Standards
Using tough benchmarks, Collins and his research team identified a set of elite companies that made the leap to great results and sustained those results for at least fifteen years. How great? After the leap, the good-to-great companies generated cumulative stock returns that beat the general stock market by an average of seven times in fifteen years, better than twice the results delivered by a composite index of the world’s greatest companies, including Coca-Cola, Intel, General Electric, and Merck.

      The Comparisons
The research team contrasted the good-to-great companies with a carefully selected set of comparison companies that failed to make the leap from good to great. What was different? Why did one set of companies become truly great performers while the other set remained only good?

Over five years, the team analyzed the histories of all twenty-eight companies in the study. After sifting through mountains of data and thousands of pages of interviews, Collins and his crew discovered the key determinants of greatness — why some companies make the leap and others don’t.

      The Findings
The findings of the Good to Great study will surprise many readers and shed light on virtually every area of management strategy and practice. The findings include:

Level 5 Leaders: The research team was shocked to discover the type of leadership required to achieve greatness.
The Hedgehog Concept (Simplicity within the Three Circles): To go from good to great requires transcending the curse of competence.
A Culture of Discipline: When you combine a culture of discipline with an ethic of entrepreneurship, you get the magical alchemy of great results. Technology Accelerators: Good-to-great companies think differently about the role of technology.

Carter writes about the powerful rhythms of countryside and community in a sharecropping economy, offering an unforgettable portrait of his father, a brilliant farmer and a strict segregationist who treated black workers with respect and fairness; his strong-willed and well-read mother; and the five other people who shaped his early life, three of whom were black.

Carter’s clean and eloquent prose evokes a time when the cycles of life were predictable and simple and the rules were heartbreaking and complex. In his singular voice and with a novelist’s gift for detail, Jimmy Carter creates a sensitive portrait of an era that shaped the nation and recounts a classic, American story of enduring importance.

    • Man Who Was Thursday

      G. K. Chesterton’s surreal masterpiece is a psychological thriller that centers on seven anarchists in turn-of-the-century London who call themselves by the names of the days of the week. Chesterton explores the meanings of their disguised identities in what is a fascinating mystery and, ultimately, a spellbinding allegory. As Jonathan Lethem remarks in his Introduction, The real characters are the ideas. Chesterton’s nutty agenda is really quite simple: to expose moral relativism and parlor nihilism for the devils he believes them to be. This wouldn’t be interesting at all, though, if he didn’t also show such passion for giving the devil his due. He animates the forces of chaos and anarchy with every ounce of imaginative verve and rhetorical force in his body.

He also highlights some of the most important interpretive issues in the transfer of the hereditary religion of Europe to America.

    • Sacrament Of Reconciliation

      $29.95

Although it did not come from Christ in the form it has today, it is clear from Scripture that reconciliation was central to the ministry of Christ. In The Sacrament of Reconciliation David Coffey examines the theology of reconciliation and addresses the crisis that the sacrament faces in the present pastoral situation of the Church.

Father Coffey calls on Scripture and tradition, to the magisterium, and to theology in his analysis. However, he also moves beyond these to look at the practice of the Church and to the liturgy as it is regulated, celebrated, and experienced. In doing so, he presents a theology of the sacrament of reconciliation that is truly based on, and inspired by, the liturgy. This theology is molded by two contextual factors: the crisis that the sacrament is currently undergoing in the developed nations of the West and the restrictions imposed by Rome on the “third rite,” the most communal of the three forms of the sacrament.

Since the sacrament of reconciliation exists for the forgiveness of postbaptismal sin, chapter one is devoted to a theology of sin. Here, Father Coffey identifies what the main theological cause is at the heart of the present crisis, namely, a serious and widespread confusion about the nature of sin. Chapter two focuses on the Church’s ministry of reconciliation. This chapter provides both essential knowledge and a response to the widely held view that one does not need to turn to the Church in order to obtain forgiveness from God for sin. Chapter three examines the four parts of the sacrament: contrition, confession, absolution, and the prescribed work of penance. The investigation in this chapter suggests theological limits to possible future reforms of the sacrament. In chapter four Father Coffey offers a detailed examination of the three sacramental rites and the nonsacramental service set down by The Rite of Penance. Finally, in chapter five, Father Coffey offers some predictions about the future of the sacrament, based on his study.

    • In The Latter Days

      $19.98

“What in the World is God Doing?” asks Vinson Synan. Evil has swept the earth in the twentieth century-the bloodiest in human history. Yet this century has also seen an astounding outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Writing with both a historian’s perspective and prophetic urgency, Synan helps us understand our times. Today, God is giving great gifts in times of great trouble. In the Latter Days, describes the Pentecostal outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the twentieth century. It is the greatest revival in human history. It has touched millions of lives, reached across denominational barriers, restored spiritual gifts to Christian life, and permanently reshaped Christianity. The Pentecostal movement began humbly in a Kansas farmhouse and a shabby Los Angeles meeting hall. It spread rapidly throughout the U.S., spawning several new fast-growing denominations, and within a few decades had taken hold in every continent. then, in the 1960s, even Pentecostal Christians were amazed when a neo-Pentecostal movement erupted in the mainline Protestant denominations and the charismatic renewal unexpectedly appeared in the Catholic Church. In the Latter Days tells the whole dramatic story of God’s Pentecostal working our day–a day of great evil and–a day of great blessing

      $18.99

Prayer is vital to the Christian life, and yet who is satisfied with their own prayer life? Daily devotions draw Christians into a deeper faith, and yet who believes their devotional life to be rich and deep enough? This one-year daily devotional provides rich rewards in the reader’s prayer and devotional life. • Jesus And The Village Scribes

      $45.00

This volume challenges Gerd Theissen’s dominant thesis of “wandering radicals” as the earliest spreaders of the Jesus tradition. Several conclusions emerge: (1) the textual evidence for the “wandering radicals” hypothesis is not tenable and it must be replaced with one that more closely comports with the evidence: (2) the immediate context of the Jesus movement, and of Q in particular, is the socio-economic crisis in Galilee under the Romans; and (3) the formation of Q is the product of Galilean village scribes in the Jesus movement reacting to the negative developments in Galilee that affected their social standing. Arnal moves decisively beyond earlier Q studies, which focused almost exclusively on literary history without dealing with the social realities of the first century.

Building a marriage is a lifelong endeavor for both men and women. Most marriage books cover the three C’s–communication, compromise, and consideration-but fail to address many issues critical to a healthy relationship. Family advocate Kay James calls these the “things I wish I had known before I got married”: advice on finances, sex, children, and dealing with the extended family. Noting that the apostle Paul exhorted older women not to inspire or counsel younger women, but to teach them how to be wives to their husbands, Kay offers a lifetime’s wealth of wisdom for creating an unbreakable marriage relationship.

    • Case For Marriage

      $20.00

A groundbreaking look at the most basic and universal of all human institutions, this authoritative and provocative book reveals the benefits-emotional, physical, economic, and sexual-that marriage brings to individuals and society as a whole.

Everyone knows that we are experiencing an epidemic of divorce; rates of single-parenthood and unmarried cohabitation are skyrocketing while marriage rates continue to decline. Yet 93% of Americans still say they hope to form a lasting and happy union with one person, though fewer now believe that this is possible.

Numerous books have been written about the impact of divorce on men, women, children, and society at large. But no one has yet studied the long-term benefits of being and staying married. The Case for Marriage is a critically important intervention in the national debate about the future of the family. Based on the authoritative research of family sociologist Linda Waite and other scholars, the book’s findings dramatically contradict the anti-marriage myths that have become the common sense of most Americans. Today a broad consensus holds that marriage is a bad deal for women, that divorce is better for children when parents are unhappy, and that marriage is essentially a private choice, not a public institution. Waite and Gallagher flatly contradict these assumptions, arguing instead that by a broad range of indices, being married is actually better for you physically, materially, and spiritually than being single or divorced. Married people live longer, have better health, earn more money and accumulate more wealth, feel more fulfilled in their lives, enjoy more satisfying sexual relationships, and have happier and more successful children than those who remain single, cohabit, or get divorced. Statistics show, for example, that violence is less prevalent in married households and that divorce reduces male life expectancy on the order of a pack-a-day cigarette habit.

While their book is not primarily a work of moral exhortation, the authors argue that in order for marriage to do its beneficial work it must be treated as a socially preferred option, not merely one choice among others that are equally valid. Combining clearheaded analysis, penetrating cultural criticism, and practical advice for strengthening the institution of marriage, the authors provide clear, essential guidelines for reestablishing marriage as the foundation for a healthy and happy society.

    • Bride Of The Lamb

      $49.99

Sergius Bulgakov is thought by many to be the twentieth century’s foremost Russian Orthodox theologian. The Bride of the Lamb is widely regarded as Bulgakov’s magnum opus and, even more, as one of the greatest works ever produced in the modern Orthodox church. This book is now available in English thanks to esteemed translator Boris Jakim, along with an introduction to Bulgakov and his theological context.

For readers new to Russian religious thought, The Bride of the Lamb presents a fresh approach to Christian doctrine. Bulgakov examines issues of ecclesiology and eschatology from a sophiological perspective. This distinctive Russian approach, based on the doctrine of Sophia, the wisdom of God, sees the Creator and creation intimately linked as Divine-humanity. The Bride of the Lamb explores the nature of created beings, the relationship between God and the world, the role of the church, and such eschatological themes as the second coming of Jesus, resurrection and judgment, and the afterlife.

      $40.00

The growing cultural diversity of American society is mirrored in the pews and parishes of mainline denominations and represents a dynamic challenge to the effective proclamation of the gospel on Sunday mornings. Preaching to Every Pew, based on extensive field research, takes on the challenge of preaching in such a context. The authors map an approach to culture from four signifigant perspectives: ethnicity, class, displacement, and religious beliefs. They describe the signifigant ways in which culture influences human beings, detail how cultural influences affect and complicate communication in general and preaching in particular, and then recommend practical strategies for improving communication in culturally diverse settings. Preaching to Every Pew is an invaluable aid to pastors and seminaries yearning for more effective ways to proclaim the gospel.

    • 1-2 Chronicles

      $40.00

Paul Hooker suggests here that 1 and 2 Chronicles are not a “history of Israel,” but rather a theological reflection on the story of Israel’s faith. The Chronicler uses the narratives of Samuel and Kings, skillfully edited and augmented, to develop his vision of Israel. At the center of that vision lies the assertion that Israel is the people of God, selected by God from among all the nations, and set apart to worship God in the place of God’s choosing(Jerusalem) and in the manner of God’s intent(according to the instructions of the Torah). His ultimate purpose, however, is not to dwell on long ago. Rather he seeks to sketch the lines of Israel’s future as the people of God by drawing on the resources of Israel’s past. Books in the Westminster Bible Companion series assist laity in their study of the Bible as a guide to Christian faith and practice. In this first of a three-volume, comprehensive history, Gary Dorrien mixes theological analysis with historical and biographical detail to present the first comprehensive interpretation of American theological liberalism. Don Baker begins this guide by saying, “God has given me free will, and while I appreciate his confidence in my ability to choose, there are times when I wish that he would make the decisions for me.” Unfortunately, the Bible cannot give us the answer to every choice we face either. But the Bible does teach us how to make decisions. And these studies will help you to learn those principles and apply them to your life. This LifeGuide Bible Study in the new revised format features questions for starting group discussions and for meeting God in personal reflection, as well as a new “Now or Later” section in each study.

    • Earth Habitat : Eco Injustice And The Churchs Response

      $35.00

This single volume gathers theologians from around the world to address three pressing questions: How can Christianity and Christian churches rethink themselves and their roles in light of the endangered earth? What “earth-honoring” elements does justice- oriented Christianity have to contribute to the common good? And how can communities and churches respond creatively and constructively on a local level to these vast global forces? This volume captures the chief themes and presentations from the October 1998 conference on social justice, ecology, and church entitled “Ecumenical Earth” and held at Union Theological Seminary. Among the 18 contributors to this trailblazing conference are Rasmussen and Hessel, James Cone, Kusumita Pedersen, Brigitte Kahl, Ibrahim M. Abu-Rabi, Steven Rockefeller, Havid Hallman, Ernst Conradie, Peggy Shepard, and Troy Messenger.

    • Justice Men Owe Women

      $26.66

This new Sacred Energies volume shows how the world’s major religious traditions, though largely patriarchal, can also serve as a profound resource for redressing gender injustices. This reassessment must be taken up by men themselves. The heritage of our sacred texts speaks in a male voice and almost always to male advantage. Men therefore owe it to themselves to extricate themselves from this complicity and to ask, as does this book, how our scriptures, founding prophets, and ancestors can be used today to further justice in relations between the genders.
