Trapped By Control
$13.99Add to cartThere is a question that every Christian would do well to ask: Day by day, who or what controls my life? Control can be godly or ungodly, depending on whose authority is in place. It’s harmful to us when it undermines our freedom to choose what is right. For many of us, the Lordship of Jesus is continually being challenged by ungodly controls that come from people, past and present situations, and even from within ourselves – fear being one of the key issues. The enemy is seductive and deceptive. His primary aim is to gain control through our sinful beliefs and behaviors. When control is not in the hands of God it’s in the hands of the kingdom of darkness.Wrongful control spoils relationships and seriously damages lives. This book takes a closer look at how and why people control. Controlling behavior is always a symptom of a deeper issue; it’s a sinful response to inner wounding and insecurity. As God reveals the roots of control we can choose to forgive those who have hurt us and receive His comfort, His acceptance and His healing at a deep level. This book is therefore ideal for those who want to understand ungodly control in their own lives or in others and find the keys to walking in freedom.

Spirituality In Season
$27.49Add to cartWe are used to making Lent a special time for spiritual renewal, but the whole of the liturgical year offers an endless resource for growth in faith and understanding. Spirituality in Season explores the treasures that Christian tradition has accumulated over centuries and suggests new and creative-ways of drawing on these riches in ways that nurture both individual experience and the worshipping life of the church.
All of human life is reflected in the Christian year – the drama of its joys and sorrows, the times of waiting, the long stretches of uneventful ordinariness. This book aims to unlock the great potential of the seasons, both for those who plan and lead worship, and for those who use the church’s year as a resource for their own and others’ spiritual growth. Each chapter draws out the distinctive spiritual ‘mood’ of a particular season and offers:
-An overview of the season, its major themes and markers for the journey
-An exploration of seasonal liturgies, the lectionary readings and other resources
-Insights from writers from the Christian tradition and from literature
-Creative ideas for seasonal worship
-Practical tools for spiritual exploration.
Spirituality, liturgy and theology are often disconnected in contemporary Christian practice. Spirituality in Season offers a coherent vision for worship and personal spiritual growth that reconnects these great gifts at our disposal.

THE LAYING ON OF HANDS FOR THE RECEPTION OF THE SPIRIT
THE LAYING ON OF HANDS FOR COMMISSIONING AND ORDINATION
CONCLUSIONSAdditional Info
This study investigates the procedural techniques, significance, and the tangible effects of the laying on of hands in the New Testament. The author investigates the background of the New Testament practice by conducting investigation in the Old Testament and contemporary Judaism and the Graeco-Roman and Near-Eastern literature. The main chapters are exegetical, each discussing a particular use of the laying on of hands in the New Testament: for blessing, healing, reception of the Spirit and ordination. A special attention is given to the inner process of transfer of power through physical contact. It is the author’s conclusion that in the New Testament the gesture always signifies transfer of some positive materia: blessing, ‘life-force’, the Spirit and charismata. In the final section, an attempt is made to gauge the possibility of any uniformity in the significance of the various New Testament uses of the laying on of hands. -

$19.99Add to cartDr. Charles Stanley identifies nine destructive temptations and gives Christians the hope and skills they need to live an abundant and obedient life. However, he does not always employ an all-out frontal assault. Sometimes the danger comes in subtle schemes–landmines hidden along our paths. These landmines, once detonated, can paralyze us spiritually and stop us from living an abundant and obedient life. In Landmines in the Path of the Believer, beloved pastor Dr. Charles Stanley shows readers how to identify, avoid, or defuse landmines of Pride, Jealousy and Envy, Insecurity, Compromise, Unforgiveness, Sexual Sin, Laziness, Disappointment, and Fear. “Avoiding serious trouble is not difficult,” says Dr. Stanley, “especially if you follow the route God has given you to travel. God knows the way through every minefield.”

New Intrepreters Handbook Of Preaching
$73.99Add to cartThe New Interpreter’s Handbook of Preaching is a major reference tool for preaching, with articles on every facet of Christian sermon preparation and delivery. This resource is both scholarly and practical. It focuses on the most distinctive feature and greatest strength of homiletics as a discipline: It is rooted in interdisciplinary scholarship and it develops theory geared to practice. Its theory arises out of the study of both excellent preaching past and present and actual sermon preparation and composition. When theory and practice critique each other, it is possible to produce guidelines that assist greater excellence and economy in preaching the gospel. Excellence in standards is an area in which homiletics needs to grow, and this project will be both a means to encourage and develop it. A guiding question throughout will be, Will it preach? The answers will be offered in the sense that “here is something that works well,” rather than “here is something to try.”

The Psalms have long served a vital role in the individual and corporate lives of Christians, expressing the full range of human emotions, including some that we are ashamed to admit. The Psalms reverberate with joy, groan in pain, whimper with sadness, grumble in disappointment and rage with anger. The church fathers employed the Psalms widely. In liturgy they used them both as hymns and as Scripture readings. Within them they found pointers to Jesus both as Son of God and as Messiah. They also employed the Psalms widely as support for other New Testament teachings, as counsel on morals and as forms for prayer.
But the church fathers found more than pastoral insight in the Psalms. They found apologetic and doctrinal insight as well, as is attested by the more than sixty-five authors and more than 160 works excerpted in this commentary. provided more than pastoral
Especially noteworthy among the Greek-speaking authors cited are Hippolytus, Origen, Eusebius of Caesarea, Athanasius, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nyssa, Didymus the Blind, Evagrius of Pontus, Diodore of Tarsus, John Chrysostom, Asterius the Homilist, Theodore of Mopsuestia, Theodoret of Cyr, Cyril of Alexandria and Hesychius of Jerusalem. Among noteworthy Latin authors we find Hilary of Poitiers, Ambrose of Milan, Jerome, Augustine, Arnobius the Younger and Cassiodorus.
Readers of these selections, some of which appear here for the first time in English, will glean from a rich treasury of deep devotion and profound theological reflection.

It demonstrates the power of Berry’s vision and shows how his account of the world resonates with the biblical narrative of creation. Elijah : A Man Of Heroism And Humility
$21.99Add to cartExploring the depths of Elijah’s fascinating life as a prophet of God in Great Lives: Elijah, Swindoll does not gloss over his human weaknesses; rather, he presents an honest picture of this ordinary man whom God transformed into His personal spokesman to confront idolatry and evil in the ancient world. Alone, Elijah faced off with over four hundred prophets of the false god Baal-and won. Yet, on another occasion, he became so terrified of a woman that he ran for his life. He was Elijah–the man in a whirlwind, the humble hero. In a world that has lost its way, due in part to the lack of balanced, godly leadership, we are more than ever in need of a few Elijah-like men and women who are not afraid to live courageously among their peers as they walk humbly with God.

There is one “right” biblical model for family life.

Man In White
$16.99Add to cartJohnny Cash. The Apostle Paul. Passionate. Controversial. Fiery. Destructive. Redeemed. Two legendary men. Two thousand years apart-yet remarkably similar. It also turned him into one of the most influential men in history. Johnny Cash’s vision was of another man entirely-his recently deceased father-a vision that helped spark his imagination to write this historical novel about the amazing life of the intriguing figure with whom Cash identified so deeply-the Apostle Paul. See Paul as you’ve never seen him before–through the creative imagination of one of the greatest singer-songwriters America has ever known. Subsequently see Johnny Cash, the man in Black, as you’ve never seen him before–as a passionist novelist consumed with the Man In White.

Additional Info
In this book, Jarvis Streeter details Ernest Becker’s anthropological theories and compares them with traditional and contemporary Christian thought on human nature, sin, and salvation in order to see how the two approaches compare and where Becker might have insights to offer contemporary Christian thinkers.Ernest Becker was a pioneer in the interdisciplinary study of human nature and motivation, drawing from the fields of evolutionary biology, psychology, psychiatry, cultural anthropology, sociology, philosophy and religion to create what he termed a Science of Man. His goal was to understand the most basic human motives, particularly those that led to evil behavior in order to ameliorate them and create a more humane world. He concluded, following the thought of Alfred Adler, Otto Rank and philosophical and religious existentialism, that the related urges to avoid death anxiety, gain self-esteem and symbolically deny death were the key human motives–ones which were also responsible for human evil–and that religion has had a complex role to play for both good and ill in human history.

Questions God Asks Us
$14.99Add to cartTransformation comes from questions, not answers. We often look to the Bible as the book of answers. How often, though, do we consider the challenging questions God asks? Hudson notes that Jesus was asked 183 questions in the Gospels but directly only answered three. The Creator is teaching us as we teach children when they struggle with schoolwork: You learn more by doing than being fed an absolute answer. In Questions God Asks Us, we’re encouraged to focus on the quest than a resolution. Such an approach leads to deeper dialogue and intimacy with the divine. This is a critical turning point in our journey with God – as it was for the author. “I thought the Bible existed to give me solutions to my everyday concerns and dilemmas,” writes Hudson. “Then I realized I might be approaching God and the Bible from the wrong direction. It was as if God said to me, ‘Trevor, rather than you always asking questions of me, start listening to the questions I have for you.” Each of 10 questions Hudson excerpts from the Old and New Testaments serve as a starting point for genuine conversation with the Creator. He assures, “We’re not starting the conversation with God from scratch. God has already begun it. We just need to plug into the conversation that is already going on.” Questions God Asks Us offers a fresh approach for personal devotions and a unique discussion tool for small group Bible studies. It’s sure to bless anyone longing for a meaningful, growing relationship with God.

How To Argue Like Jesus
$19.99Add to cartUses Jesus’ words and actions found in the New Testament to systematically evaluate his rhetorical stylings, drawing real lessons from his teachings that today’s readers can employ. Jesus of Nazareth never wrote a book, held political office, or wielded a sword. He never gained sway with the mighty or influential. He never took up arms against the governing powers in Rome. He was a lower-class worker who died an excruciating death at the age of thirty-three. Yet, in spite of all odds-obscurity, powerlessness, and execution-his words revolutionized human history. How to Argue like Jesus examines the life and words of Jesus and describes the various ways in which he sought-through the spoken word, his life, and his disciples-to reach others with his message. The authors then pull some very simple rhetorical lessons from Jesus’ life that readers can use today. Both Christian and non-Christian leaders in just about any field can improve their ability to communicate effectively by studying the words and methods of history’s greatest communicator.

$14.99Add to cartCharting the rise of religion from Stone Age spirituality to the recent spread of Christianity in Africa, Asia, and South America, Discovering God asks the age-old question, if god was present from the beginning of time, why did god wait to reveal god’s self to humans until (according to their respective traditions) Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, the Buddha, etc., came along? Stark asks, why a variety of world religions all sprang up at about the same time (referred to as the Axial Age). And Stark asks, why do many religions seem to share similar features? As the title suggests, Stark’s thesis will be that god was here all along, and humans “discovered” (not invented) god in keeping with their own intellectual and spiritual evolution.

Performance In Preaching
$30.00Add to cartWhile there are no shortage of texts offering advice on the writing and delivery of sermons, most of them adopt a fairly traditional approach to the subject. This volume takes a unique approach by examining the role of performance in preaching.
The contributors, who teach in seminaries and divinity schools across the nation, bring a variety of theological and denominational perspectives to the subject. They are united, however, in their concern for the importance of the performance of the sermon-not in a shallow or theatrical sense but as an essential aspect of bringing God’s word to life for the congregation. To that end, they offer wide-ranging studies that examine theological, artistic, and musical aspects of a compelling performance.
This volume inaugurates the Engaging Worship series from Fuller Theological Seminary’s Brehm Center for Worship, Theology, and the Arts. It offers an innovative approach and alternative perspectives to the subject of preaching that will engage and challenge clergy who are already in the pulpit as well as students in seminary classes. The volume comes with a 90-minute companion DVD that complements the text, covering practical subjects that range from warm-up exercises to the mechanics of oral presentation.

King And Messiah As Son Of God
$33.99Add to cartThis book traces the history of the idea that the king and later the messiah is Son of God, from its origins in ancient Near Eastern royal ideology to its Christian appropriation in the New Testament.
Both highly regarded scholars, Adela Yarbro Collins and John J. Collins argue that Jesus was called “the Son of God” precisely because he was believed to be the messianic king. This belief and tradition, they contend, led to the identification of Jesus as preexistent, personified Wisdom, or a heavenly being in the New Testament canon. However, the titles Jesus is given are historical titles tracing back to Egyptian New Kingdom ideology. Therefore the title “Son of God” is likely solely messianic and not literal. King and Messiah as Son of God is distinctive in its range, spanning both Testaments and informed by ancient Near Eastern literature and Jewish noncanonical literature.

Jubilee Gospel : The Jubilee Spirit And The Church
$24.99Add to cartThis book challenges the church to ask whether or not the gospel as we commonly interpret it today really embodies the jubilee vision of the Bible. Imagine a group of forty adults living in a community, assisting each other to buy houses, sharing material wealth and releasing the surplus to help others as a practical outworking of the biblical principles of jubilee.
Kim Tan was part of this group and in The Jubilee Gospel seeks to unpack these principles of sacrificial generosity, stewardship and social holiness.
Starting with the OT principle of jubilee and tracing the themes through the Bible, we discover a way of living that reflects Gods justice and compassion and embraces kingdom politics and economics.
What may seem buried deep in the early parts of the OT is brought up to date as were confronted by Jesus teaching and principles of wealth distribution, cancellation of debt, hospitality and storehouses.

Christian Moral Life
$23.95Add to cartThis book, a re-issue of the 1999 edition, demonstrates that the way of life we call Christian is lived in relationships to others. Christian faith, understood as practical piety, calls for a life opened to the world at large, concerned for the “stranger” as well as for the neighbor. Sedgwick further emphasizes that the Christian life is grounded in the experience and worship of God. His work thus develops Christian ethics as “sacramental ethics,” an ethic that has at its center a deepening encounter with God.
Written in a style accessible to non-specialists, this book provides teachers, pastors, counselors, and general readers with an ideal introduction to Christian ethics. It renews the topic of Christian ethics by showing readers that faithful moral living is achieved through the daily practices of grace and godliness.

What Did The Ancient Israelites Eat
$20.99Add to cartWhat food did the ancient Israelites really eat and how much of it did they consume? This seemingly simple question yields an incredibly complex answer. Nathan MacDonald sifts through five main types of evidence relevant to this diet examination: the biblical text, archaeological data, comparative evidence from the ancient world, comparative evidence from modern anthropological research, and modern scientific knowledge of geography and nutrition. MacDonald opens by examining biblical descriptions of the land of Israel and the Israelite diet, considering the context of ancient rhetoric and theology. In section two he delves into archaeological finds from Iron Age Israel. The difficult problem of exploring the adequacy of the ancient Israelite diet is tackled in section three where MacDonald points out the impossibility of definitive conclusions on this question. The final section is an evaluation of the variety and healthiness of the diet. He also reflects here on claims made by popular contemporary “biblical diets” and analyzes a number of books calling for a return to “biblical eating.” Diet in Ancient Israel will be useful for scholars and fascinating for general readers.

The Word of Life explores the questions that have been important for generations, including John’s understanding of God, the character of the world and its people, the elusive activity of the Spirit, and what it means to believe. Expressions like being “born again” and the idea that Jesus is “the way” can evoke both interest and uneasiness. Through these, readers can see how the gospel’s own context can shape a more vital and nuanced understanding of what such expressions mean. Koester interacts with the best of current research and makes creative proposals about ways in which to understand the many aspects of John’s theology. Clear and highly readable, this guide to the theology of John’s gospel will appeal to a wide range of readers.
