  • When You Dont Know What To Pray (Reprinted)

    $12.99

It’s easy to pray for others’ needs. If God takes a long time in answering–or answers with a no–it’s easier to take. Far more difficult is focusing on your own needs, when sometimes you don’t get the answers you want. What do you pray when life gets hard or even unbearable? When you lose a spouse or a child? When your health deteriorates? When your spiritual life seems barren? Linda Evans Shepherd knows what it’s like to pray in the most dire of circumstances. She shows readers the how, what, and when of praying for themselves. As she takes readers through her own prayer journey and the stories of others, they will be encouraged and equipped to pray for themselves in any circumstance. They’ll also find that whether or not God changes their circumstances, he will use prayer to change them.

  • Kierkegaard

    $15.99

Abingdon Pillars of Theology is a series for the college and seminary classroom designed to help students grasp the basic and necessary facts, influence, and significance of major theologians. Written by noted scholars, these books will outline the context, methodology, organizing principles, primary contributions, and key writings of people who have shaped theology as we know it today.

Sren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) “foresaw, the power of mass culture to numb the human spirit has only waxed in strength and virulence. The prostitution of religion to legitimate self-aggrandizing ideologies has become a veritable global industry. The reduction of neighbor-love to the most minimal standards of decent behavior has devolved to the point where slightly altruistic celebrities are heralded as Christ-like saints. The deep yearnings of the human heart are being suffocated by trivial amusements, technological toys, and the manipulation of the psyche. Now, perhaps more than ever, Christianity needs an aggravating Socrates to disturb its complicity with a culture of individual self-gratification and corporate self-deification.” from the book

  • Beyond Maintenance To Mission (Revised)

    $27.00

Here, in a newly revised edition, is a powerful and pertinent guide for congregations wanting to move away from “maintenance thinking” to powerful, creative engagement with the world.

Visionary yet practical, Nessan’s influential book makes a persuasive case for the centrality of mission in the life of the church. Nessan’s model of mission-driven leadership is strongly centered on the community of faith’s worship and draws unique connections between the worship life of a congregation and every aspect of the church’s ministry. Around the twin foci of congregational identity and mission, the chapters in this dynamic book provide solid theological and radical direction on the themes of worship, education, fellowship, stewardship, evangelism, global connections, and social ministry.

Equally pertinent to seminary classroom and parish life, the new edition highlights worship’s centrality, adds a new chapter on prayer and spiritual practices in this framework, significantly revises the treatments of fellowship and evangelism, and adds a full set of materials designed for congregational visioning and planning.

  • Turning Point That Changed Everything

    $26.99

In every person’s life, there comes a moment in time when circumstances or events require decisions and responses that greatly determine the future. This book has no design to be another volume on leadership techniques. Rather, it is a candid exploration of those unexpected turns birthed out of the experience of being confronted with a reversal of circumstances in the life of an individual. Frankly, it is a study about the drama of life. The intention of the author is to give a sincere and straightforward examination of why turnabouts often get high-jacked and fail to live up to people’s expectations. Even more, individuals will find a plea for courage and faith when things do not occur as they once envisioned they would. Consequently, it is a clarion call for courage to go further than some would desire, but also a caution to impatient leaders to be watchful of their own intentions to push a change further than would be wise. In the end, some leaders must be willing to consider a more contemplative life built on valuing people above their own ideological mindset.

Have you ever told God never to do something specific in your life? This book is an amazing story of how Jesus Christ worked through the life of a 60-year-old widow, leading her to live and work with the churches in Kenya that were planted on previous mission trips. It tells of the people and churches of Nandi Hills growing in number, strength, and unity in the Lord, and how God worked in marvelous ways. May your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ grow as you read this inspiring story.

Never Say “Never” is a vivid picture of God at work in the life of one of His choice servants, Judy Rushing. Through challenges from major life decisions, to literal life and death situations, God told her just what she needed to know to follow His plan for her life. “FAITH, TRIALS AND VICTORIES”
A true story of a man and his rescue from Iran.

It’s a story of an ordinary person who faced many challenges in life, yet only One, Jesus Christ, was in control all along. You will meet Him in a unique way and see how He influenced my life, and be inspired and encouraged that He can and will do the same for you.

Faith: Although I was born to have a “Father-child” relationship with the almighty God, the truth of that had not been revealed to me until God removed the veil and opened my eyes to this truth, and conversion took place in my heart.

Trials: Thirty years later, when visiting my homeland for the second time, I was faced with an unpleasant surprise when the government of Iran did not permit me to leave the country!

Victories: After two months of going between government offices and courtrooms, I realized that I might be there for a very long time! Then I chose a daring path and escaped from Iran with the aid of some men as my angels. These men, using horses, secretly brought me out of Iran in a dangerous adventure over the mountains into Turkey. God used these men to rescue me from the hands of my adversaries to safety.

  • Heaven Sent Poems

    $10.99

    Dear Reader:

What is the agenda that God has set for your life? How does one retain one’s faith while facing life’s vicissitudes? I received the answers to these questions in a unique way that I now share with you, praying that these messages will also enhance you spiritual growth. As a child I had little religious upbringing. However, I was always drawn to God’s words, strengthening my spiritual beliefs on my own by reading the Bible and praying. After my mother’s death, I joined a Methodist church and its college youth group where I met my husband.

We raised three children, then after living on a sailboat for three years, my husband and I divorced. I returned to California to be reunited with our three children, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and my twin sister.

I continued my spiritual growth by joining a church and two prayer groups. But extraordinary help came to me as I slept. I believed the Holy Spirit sent me the words to these poems, thus strengthening my faith even further.

I now share these poems with you, praying that they will also enrich you faith.

    With God’s blessing,
    Joanne Stocker

    $25.99

Bill Clinton often gets credit for being the architect of the longest economic expansion in U.S. history and for being the catalyst for 22+ million jobs that were created during his tenure. Based on this reputation, the conventional wisdom is that the U.S. can regain the prosperity of the Clinton era by electing a president with similar political values, who will advance similar policies. B. A. Marbue Brown challenges the conventional wisdom by presenting a factbased analysis, which shows that five factors combined to create an economic perfect storm during the Clinton years, and that the President had little if any influence over those factors. He also shows that several popular beliefs about the administration’s economic record are founded on myths. Then leveraging lessons learned from his analysis, he adds prescriptions that policymakers can use to drive economic growth in more typical circumstances. Almost 300 citations back up his conclusions.

  • In Celebration Of Love Marriage And Sex

    $16.99

Love backs us into a corner. It asks for everything we have. And nowhere does love work more deeply than in marriage. Marriage is about exposure. It is about truth between two people, and it is about the opportunity to know and to be known. Sex is the handiwork of love and the tool of marriage. It is sacred ground, a gift filled with beauty, grace, and power. Song of Solomon demonstrates with beauty, reverence, and clarity the celebration of love, marriage, and sex. It offers practical and reliable guidelines for these essentials and more: – Decisions about dating – Choosing a spouse – Keeping romance in marriage – Making and celebrating memories – Leaving a legacy for family Nowhere do we find a more relevant word about these important matters, nor a more beautiful portrait of celebration than in this poetic expression of God’s gift in this Song of Solomon.

  • Liberating Black Theology

    $19.99

When the beliefs of Barack Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, assumed the spotlight during the 2008 presidential campaign, the influence of black liberation theology became hotly debated not just within theological circles but across cultural lines. How many of today’s African-American congregations-and how many Americans in general-have been shaped by its view of blacks as perpetual victims of white oppression?

In this interdisciplinary, biblical critique of the black experience in America, Anthony Bradley introduces audiences to black liberation theology and its spiritual and social impact. He starts with James Cone’s proposition that the “victim” mind-set is inherent within black consciousness. Bradley then explores how such biblical misinterpretation has historically hindered black churches in addressing the diverse issues of their communities and prevented adherents from experiencing the freedoms of the gospel. Yet Liberating Black Theology does more than consider the ramifications of this belief system; it suggests an alternate approach to the black experience that can truly liberate all Christ-followers.

And she isn’t alone. We know we can talk to God, but it just sounds so important, so intimidating, so religious. Only the very spiritual hear from Him directly. Only those who live as missionaries or in a monastery can really pray and move mountains. Right? Wrong. Sheila has come a long way since the days when she shied away from prayer. In fact, today she says, “Every sound we utter, every thank you we say, every tear we cry in God’s presence is prayer.” Her life message has always been You are loved by God just as you are. If we are loved as we are, we can talk to God as we are.

  • Daniel Fast For Spiritual Breakthrough (Reprinted)

    $15.00

Elmer Towns’s Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough has become must-reading as this powerful spiritual discipline of fasting has seen a revival among followers of Christ. Now Towns digs deeper into one of the most popular forms of fasting today, the Daniel Fast. With an emphasis on a healthy, simple diet, the Daniel Fast is named after the prophet Daniel who participated in a partial fast for spiritual purposes. Daniel was taken captive into Babylon when he was sixteen years old. The Babylonian king wanted the young prophet to help him administer his rule over the captive Jews–and he wanted to “Babylon-ize” Daniel, to make the young man of God more like him. The first step the king took in his campaign was to provide a sumptuous feast to tempt Daniel–food fit for a king– basically fattening comfort foods. In response, the prophet refrained from the king’s table, choosing instead to eat only vegetables and to drink only water. He honored God over the king. Dr. Elmer Towns introduces readers to the spiritual, physical, and mental basics of the Daniel Fast, coaching them through either a ten-day or twenty-one-day period of renewal, and he includes original Daniel Fast recipes created by executive chef John P. Perkins. Dr. Towns addresses practical questions, such as what to eat and when, as well as how to pray effectively. Readers will learn how to encounter God during their fast, how to worship through self-discipline, and how to pray for specific answers. They will also explore the role of weeping, repentance, and spiritual warfare in their life of faith. Daniel is a model to God’s people of someone who chooses spiritual nourishment over bodily satisfaction, in The Daniel Fast for Spiritual Breakthrough, God’s people can learn to follow his example.

But when a new English family moves next door and their lovely teenage daughter, Lilly Allen, catches his eye, Joshua wonders if all the plans for his future are too set in stone.

After promising herself to never have a marriage like her parents, she wonders if perhaps another man might be a better match. A man such as Roland Schrock. He’s steady and kind and somewhat boring. If she marries him, she won’t ever have to worry about loving him and getting hurt.

Her family moved to Sugarcreek to hide her pregnancy from their community back home. Once she’s had the baby, they plan to send her off to college without anyone from their old neighborhood knowing the truth. This is the first biography of John A. Mackay (1889-1983), an important Presbyterian leader, missionary, and professor who served as president of Princeton Theological Seminary from 1936 to 1959. As president, he rebuilt the seminary faculty after the split in 1927. His ecumenical vision opened Princeton to a wider ecumenical stance and, under his leadership, the seminary prospered as a leading Protestant theological institution. Mackay was a leading ecumenist for much of the twentieth century and helped establish the World Council of Churches. He also founded Theology Today and is recognized as a major figure in both the Presbyterian Church and in theological education. This biography is made all the more compelling by the fact that it was authored by Mackay’s grandson, John Metzger, son of the late Princeton Seminary professor, Dr. Bruce M. Metzger.

    Additional Info
The heart of Christian reality is a “society”, a Trinity of persons living with and for one another. God created us to live in bonds of society and friendship, not as lone rangers. The Christian faith presents friendship and hospitality not as luxuries but necessities. God does not save us in isolation but in community with other people. There is no possibility of living to the glory of God apart from godly companions. In this book, Steve Wilkins seeks to call us back to the joyous obligations of friendship and hospitality.

  • Introduction To The Historical Books

    $21.99

Steven McKenzie here surveys the historical books of the Old Testament – Joshua through Ezra-Nehemiah – for their historical context, contents, form, and themes, communicating them clearly and succinctly for an introductory audience. / By providing a better understanding of biblical history writing in its ancient context, McKenzie helps readers come to terms with tensions between the Bible’s account and modern historical analyses. Rather than denying the results of historical research or dismissing its practitioners as wrongly motivated, he suggests that the source of the perceived discrepancy may lie not with the Bible but with the way in which it has been read. He also calls into question whether the genre of the Bible’s historical books has been properly understood.

    $21.00

A faith should be a living thing. What we believe necessarily evolves in response to insights into the Bible, to questions or doubts we face, to changes in life circumstances, or to things that happen in the larger world. Nevertheless, Christians often find it helpful to identify what they can most fully believe at a given moment. Such clarity empowers the present and leads us toward the future. Such moments can also be mile markers by which we measure our faith journey.

How can Christians contribute to the debates about climate change and global warming? What ethical criteria do they bring to the conversation? How does the Bible figure in their deliberation?

Carol Robb brings together the several dimensions of this one overarching issue of our lifetimes: hers is an ecological ethics in theological perspective, and it integrates economic theory, environmental policy, and most distinctively New Testament studies. Alongside deliberation on scenarios for the future in light of climate change and assessing criteria for ethical policy in this area, she reflects on implications of the New Testament worldview for ethics now. Relating Jesus’ life, ministry, and teachings to the resurrection, then probing how Paul and other early followers of Jesus related to the empire, Robb provides a surprisingly fruitful fund of ideas for Christian responsibility in this area.

  • How God Acts

    $32.00

How does the Christian doctrine of creation square with the picture of an evolving universe we receive from science today? How do the badly predatory behavior and wasteful extinction of whole species fit in with a Christian understanding?

These and a host of related questions raised by ordinary experience are tackled in this important and original work from theologian Denis Edwards. From providence and miracles to resurrection and intercessory prayer, Edwards shows how a basically noninterventionist model of divine action does justice to the universe as we know it and also to central convictions of Christian faith about the goodness of God, the promises of God, and the fulfillment of creation. Here is wonderfully lucid theology supporting a vision of how God is at work in the universe.

  • Get Real : On Evangelism In The Late Modern World

    $19.99

The Gospel is more than information about the death and resurrection of our Lord. It is an invitation to enter, by way of personal faith, into a relationship with the person referenced by our propositions. Our task as believers is to mediate saving communion with a personal being upon whose will our very existence is contingent. It is precisely this personal aspect of our message, the Gospel-as-Person, that is in conflict with the late-modern notions of the Self and social discourse.

Get Real: On Evangelism in the Late Modern World describes how the late-modern phenomena of existential anxiety, social alienation, and epistemic uncertainty have resulted in what some have called “the loss of Self.” It also identifies ways in which that loss obstructs both the presentation of and the reception of the Gospel-as-Person. Finally, it shows how the Gospel-as-Person facilitates the recovery of the Self and social discourse, and how that message can be effectively presented in the late-modern context.

  • Roots And Remedies

    $18.99

The Christian movement is entering a new postcolonial era with centers of the faith on all continents. American Christians have often felt uniquely qualified to lead this growing movement because of a long history of sending missionaries and funding mission projects. Yet something is hampering the relationship between Western and non-Western churches, preventing the dynamic synergism that Christians might expect.

Roots and Remedies of the Dependency Syndrome in World Missions, Robert Reese identifies this hindrance as the Dependency Syndrome, a relic of colonial mission methods. With three decades of experience in Zimbabwe, Reese explains the roots of dependency and how this continues to cloud the vision of many well-meaning Western Christians. He documents the tragic results of relying too much on foreign ideas, institutions, personnel, and funding that sideline non-Western churches from fulfilling the Great Commission.

Reese addresses remedies for dependency, examining healthy mission models tried and tested since the days of the apostle Paul. From issues that arise from globalization to best mission practices in the twenty-first century, Roots and Remedies aims to achieve what most Christians are seeking but find elusive: how all parts of the diverse Body of Christ around the world can cooperate productively to bring Christ where He is not now known without creating dependency.

  • Christianity In The Greco Roman World (Reprinted)

    $35.00

A creative introduction to the world of our New Testament belief
Background becomes foreground in Moyer Hubbard’s creative introduction to the social and historical setting for the letters of the Apostle Paul to churches in Asia Minor and Europe.

Hubbard begins each major section with a brief narrative featuring a fictional character in one of the great cities of that era. Then he elaborates on various aspects of the cultural setting related to each particular vignette, discussing the implications of those venues for understanding Paul’s letters and applying their message to our lives today. Addressing a wide array of cultural and traditional issues, Hubbard discusses:
    * Religion and superstition
    * Education, philosophy, and oratory
    * Urban society
    * Households and family life in the Greco-Roman world

This work is based on the premise that the better one understands the historical and social context in which the New Testament (and Paul’s letters) was written, the better one will understand the writings of the New Testament themselves. Passages become clearer, metaphors deciphered, and images sharpened. Teachers, students, and laypeople alike will appreciate Hubbard’s unique, illuminating, and well-researched approach to the world of the early church.

The Abingdon Old Testament Commentaries provide compact, critical commentaries on the books of the Old Testament for the use of theological students and pastors. The commentaries are also useful for upper-level college or university students and for those responsible for teaching in congregational settings. In addition to providing basic information and insights into the Old Testament writings, these commentaries exemplify the tasks and procedures of careful interpretation, to assist students of the Old Testament in coming to an informed and critical engagement with the biblical texts themselves.

From the book, “The effects of the Judean refugees’ trauma would be far reaching. Certainly an individual named Ezekiel might have experienced persistent reactions to trauma for the length of time covered by the book. Moreover, the experience and effects of exile were not limited to Ezekiel, nor even to his generation. The book’s existence attests that others in the exilic community, and beyond, found their experiences reflected in its words.”

The people are starting to catch on. There s this guy who has spent his life working in his dad s wood shop, making beds, stools, and some real nice end tables. But, around the age of thirty he gets to thinking a career change is necessary. Only problem is he wants a position that is seemingly already filled, the job of priest. Doesn t stop him. Call him an entrepreneur of sorts, cause he begins preaching and healing in ways no one has ever seen without the employment of the temple. And to top it all off, he starts collecting a good fan base lots of people begin showing up to all his public appearances.

One day, he climbs up on a mountain and says there is a new kingdom at hand, and that this kingdom will be contradictory to everything they have known before.

And the people get the feeling this is only the beginning. You see, they were expecting a king arriving in grand fashion, but instead they got a carpenter, turned speaker and healer, who was about to shake things up a bit.

The Kingdom Experiment is a challenge to live this kingdom intentionally. It won t be easy. And it may get uncomfortable. But if you commit to live what a carpenter started 2000 years ago, you too will experience the kingdom He spoke of.

    How it works:

    1. Read and discuss each chapter with your group
    2. Pick one of eight experiments (challenges to live intentionally) to do throughout the week.
    3. Journal your thoughts and experiences
    4. Share your experiences as a group the following week

The point of The Kingdom Experiment is community. And to share stories while we re at it. To grapple with what good news means in the context of this specific time and place. The Kingdom Experiment is an 8-week challenge, but who says it has to end there. Journey with your students through 8 weeks of the beatitudes. With both community and individual challenges each week, this study helps students engage the kingdom in every aspect of their lives.

Many modern Christians are familiar with the name, and perhaps even some of the writings of, A. W. Tozer, but few living today were blessed to sit under his weekly teaching from the pulpit. In this never-before-published collection of teachings on 1 Peter, adapted from sermons given to his parishioners, Tozer examines what it means to call oneself a Christian. In his view, to be a recipient of God’s salvation is to become “the pride of all heaven,” indestructible and able to withstand anything and everything that seeks to undermine one’s faith. The Epistle of 1 Peter was written to a group of just such Christians, to encourage them to live in the center of God’s redeeming love. Through Tozer’s incomparable teaching and commentary, this ancient letter becomes a fresh and life-infusing admonition for today’s Christian!

If Christian mission in Asia and most of the non-Western world is ever to advance, it must seriously consider the importance of family networks. Far too long the strategy of a “one by one” approach has stifled the spread of the gospel, reinforced a highly individualized unbiblical theology and destroyed social relationships that might lead to conversation, conversion and social transformation. With this concern in mind, SEANET is proud to present another volume in its series addressing critical missiological issues relevant to the practice of mission in Buddhist, Asian and many other contexts. Our title, Family and Faith in Asia: The Missional Impact of Extended Networks, attempts to issue a wake-up call to serious reflection on a highly ignored social reality in Buddhist and many other social contexts. The book is a resource useful for anyone wishing to study practical approaches to issues related to family and faith in Asia, particularly in Buddhist contexts for mission.

Dr. Gumprecht explores the beginnings of this religious arm of the New Age movement, focusing on Agnes Sanford’s rebellion against the orthodox church, her understanding of God’s will in connection with suffering, her involvement with New Age leader Emmet Fox, and more.

  • Legend Of The Christmas Kiss

    $11.99

Swaddled in a sweet poem and wrapped in beautiful illustrations, “The Legend of the Christmas Kiss” delivers a surprisingly fun tale about how the angels sent a beautiful snowfall on the very first Christmas. It all begins with one little angel who wants to bless the newborn Jesus with a gift — her kiss. But something special happens to her kiss after passing through the clouds below — it becomes a glistening speck, drifting down and landing on the Christ child’s cheek. Then as multitudes of angels add their kisses to hers, the earth is covered in a winter wonderland. Barbie Jenkins’ kid-friendly story is joyously paired with illustrations by Joyce Revoir whose cheerful art is featured in numerous children’s books.

  • Godly Home

    $19.99

In twenty-first century America, at a time when the family structure is crumbling, divorce rates are at an all-time high, and respect for parents is diminishing, The Godly Home serves as a balm for those seeking God’s plan for the family. With an introduction by J. I. Packer, this book includes topics for those passionate about families or those teaching on the characteristics of a godly family. Richard Baxter covers topics such as marriage, children, and family worship methodically and comprehensively through both hypothetical and real-life questions and concerns that arise in family dynamics. He uses arguments, objections, and frequent Scripture to help husbands, wives, and children to live godly lives.

More than three centuries ago, Puritan church leader Baxter compiled a 1,143-page tome entitled Christian Directory, which included a section on family life. The Godly Home is the only stand-alone version of that section of Christian Directory. Editor Randall Pederson has updated the language and syntax to make this seventeenth-century collection of words one that will continue on for generations to come

  • Secret Providence Of God

    $17.99

In 1558 John Calvin held a prominent position of leadership in the Reform movement. He had written prolifically and his works had been widely circulated-and critiqued. It was at this time that he penned an answer to a critique of his position on divine providence, as articulated in the 1546 edition of the Institutes. His polemical defense of his beliefs, The Secret Providence of God, reflects the boisterous, argumentative tone of the Reformation era and is Calvin’s fullest treatment on this most important doctrine. Unfortunately, in recent decades this work has been largely forgotten.

With this new English translation of Calvin’s work, editor Paul Helm reintroduces The Secret Providence of God to students, pastors, and lay readers of Reformed theology. Translator Keith Goad has modernized the English while preserving a Latinized translation style as far as possible. Helm has provided a full introduction, discussing the work’s background, content, style, and relation to Calvin’s other writings on providence.

  • Holy Subversion : Allegiance To Christ In An Age Of Rivals

    $20.00

Christians are too often guilty of pledging their allegiance to the influential principalities and powers of this age rather than to Christ alone. In Holy Subversion, Trevin Wax challenges such behavior by urging a return to the subversive lifestyle of the earliest Christians. Their proclamation and demonstration that “Jesus is Lord” directly opposed the Caesar worship of their day.

Today, Christians in the West must choose between Jesus and our “Caesars”: self, success, money, leisure, sex, power. What would it look like, asks Wax, if today’s church reclaimed the communal, subversive nature of the gospel, intentionally undermining all contenders for our devotion? How would the message that “Jesus is Lord” change our thinking about our jobs, our families, and our church participation? Here this gifted pastor-theologian offers help in taking our faith public, dethroning modern-day Caesars, honoring the Lordship of Christ, and understanding the church as the ultimate counterculture-an embodiment of Christ’s supremacy over all.

  • Telling Gods Stories With Power

    $23.99

This is a complete and practical introduction to storying, especially for people who want to learn about using biblical storytelling in cross-cultural contexts and who want to train others to become storytellers. It includes many fascinating accounts of the responses of tribal people to the first proclamation of the gospel through storytelling.

The result of years of research and field testing, Telling God’s Stories with Power is a product of the author’s own journey as he confronted the challenges of teaching the Bible in parts of the world where people are unaccustomed to a Western style of learning. Full of innovative and groundbreaking insights, this study is packed with ideas, explanations, and constructive suggestions stated in clear and simple language.

Throughout the book there are extensive examples from the storytellers’ own experiences. Tracing the movement of the biblical stories across multiple generations of tellers and listeners, storytelling is found to be superior for knowledge transfer and for bypassing resistance to the gospel in oral contexts, thus presenting clear evidence of the effectiveness of biblical narrative among oral learners.

  • War Peace And Nonresistance (Reprinted)

    $24.99

Guy Hershberger made a significant contribution to the development of peace theology in the (Old) Mennonite Church. Perhaps the greatest service of this book is to explain clearly the centuries-old doctrine of nonresistance as understood by Mennonites in the mid-1900s.

Although nonresistance was held as a doctrine since the early days of Anabaptism in the sixteenth century, Hershberger helped expand the concept. Many of the new ideas that Hershberger posed were explorations of the social implications of nonresistance. Particularly as Mennonites assimilated into society, their neighbors pressed them with questions about social responsibility.

At the time when Hershberger penned this volume, nonresistance and nonconformity were intimately linked. Together they formed the two primary distinctives of the Mennonite Church at mid-century.

As nonresistance and nonconformity faded into the background, peace and justice took their place. Today, peace and justice as a rubric is spoken of as the primary distinctive in the Mennonite Church. Unlike the doctrines of nonresistance and nonconformity, which were founded on peculiarly biblical logic, peace and justice may be touted as ideals by even secular groups. In this vein, Hershberger’s clear delineation of the differences between biblical nonresistance and liberal pacifism will be of particular interest to contemporary readers.

Convictions about peace seem oddly out of place in a world where dictators rule with an iron fist and terrorists snuff out innocent lives in pursuit of a cause. We can thank God that Hershberger joined his voice with other faithful leaders who pointed to a better way. May we too be stewards of the charism of peace which Jesus gave to his disciples.

Reaching Muslim Women with the Good News

Like many women in the Church, Joy Loewen didn’t fully understand Muslim women or their roles in the Muslim culture and religion. In fact, she was afraid of them and not particularly interested in befriending them. But with prayer, wisdom, and a lot of love, Joy overcame these obstacles, found that she actually liked them, and that many of these women are irresistibly attracted to the love of Jesus. For the last thirty years she has used this knowledge to build authentic connections with Muslim women, reaching out to them in a sensitive, effective way.

In this practical and very personal book, Joy shares not only her insights into befriending Muslim women, but many helpful stories from her own experiences. Her goal is to help readers “move from fear to love and compassion” so that they, too, can love as Christ does. Woman to Woman is essential reading for Christian leaders, ministries, and any layperson who wants to grow in love for and understanding of Muslims.
