  • Hear My Heart

    $17.49

Hear My Heart is a collection of writings from singer-songwriter, Sheri Easter. Sometimes in life words seem superficial, shallow and empty. We struggle to put our feelings into words that convey an honest representation of the heart. By embracing the quiet moments, we hear what our heart cries in the darkness of a loved one’s death, a battle with breast cancer or caring for an aging parent suffering from Parkinson’s disease. We hear the shouts of triumph of wedding bells, anniversaries, and the celebrations of life. We hear the heart.

At the lavish home of Kumar Lal, the wealthy landowner who can trace his lineage back to a convert of the Apostle Thomas, Virat begs for help. He gets the loan – along with a life of slavery for himself and his family.

  • Beginning And End Of Wisdom

    $25.00

These explications show how the gospel shines out in the first and last chapters of the Old Testament Wisdom Literature. The wisdom literature of the Old Testament can be daunting. Sidney Greidanus, in the book’s foreword, describes Old Testament wisdom literature as “one of the more difficult genres to interpret and preach.” Yet the numerous proverbs and sayings meet us in everyday life, teaching us much about understanding and applying the gospel. Pastor Douglas O’Donnell writes, “Just as every book of the Old Testament adds light to our understanding of Jesus, so the revelation of God in the person of Christ enlightens our understanding of the Old Testament.” Not only do the wisdom books teach us about Jesus Christ, but we understand the books better in light of the revelation of God’s Son. O’Donnell opens up the genre of wisdom literature through six chapters that look at how the gospel shines through Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job. He specifically centers on the first and last chapters of each book, noting how the texts illustrate “the wisdom of God in the sufferings of our Savior.” Pastors, church leaders, and students of Scripture will find this thoughtful volume demonstrative of seeing the gospel in the Wisdom Literature.

  • Spirit Filled Church

How the Holy Spirit works through the church today

A lucid account of the function of the Spirit in the growth of the church. Through the history of God’s people the constant element has been the presence of the Almighty. The baptism in the Holy Spirit, which so galvanized the young church, equipped and empowered the believers, boosting courage, fostering fluency and granting insights to ordinary men and women. Terry Virgo was baptized in the Holy Spirit as a young believer, and delighted in the experience. ‘As we began to welcome the presence of the Holy Spirit, our church life was transformed,’ he explains. ‘The presence of the Holy Spirit changed everything.’ As the Spirit moves, so there are healings, often dramatic. But there is more: a discovery of God’s grace. As people discover grace for themselves a far more profound healing takes place, leading first to worship, then a recognition that we are a prophetic people.

Part 2: The Identity Of The Biblical Mark Viewed From African Tradition
    Part 3: Mark In Africa
Part 4: Mark In The Historical Record
Part 5: The Ubiquity Of Mark
    Conclusion

    Additional Info
We often regard the author of the Gospel of Mark as an obscure figure about whom we know little. Many would be surprised to learn how much fuller a picture of Mark exists within widespread African tradition, tradition that holds that Mark himself was from North Africa, that he founded the church in Alexandria, that he was an eyewitness to the Last Supper and Pentecost, that he was related not only to Barnabas but to Peter as well and accompanied him on many of his travels.

In this provocative reassessment of early church tradition, Thomas C. Oden begins with the palette of New Testament evidence and adds to it the range of colors from traditional African sources, including synaxaries (compilations of short biographies of saints to be read on feast days), archaeological sites, non-Western historical documents and ancient churches.

The result is a fresh and illuminating portrait of Mark, one that is deeply rooted in African memory and seldom viewed appreciatively in the West.

  • Quest For The Historical Satan

    $29.00

The figure of Satan has for centuries embodied or incarnated absolute evil. Existing alongside more intellectualist interpretations of evil, Satan has figured largely in Christian practices, devotions, popular notions of the afterlife, and fears of retribution in the beyond. Satan remains an influential reality today in many Christian traditions and in popular culture. But how should Satan be understood today?

De La Torre and Hernandez’s volume probes the murky origins of the satanic legends and beliefs back to their pre-Christian roots in the Middle East. They unearth the Satan’s roots in Egyptian and Babylonian understandings of evil. They also show, however, that the ancient Satan has some characteristics we would hardly recognize, especially his appearance in most ancient cultures and survival in many traditional religions as the “trickster” figure. While a minor tradition in historic Christianity, the authors argue, seeing Satan as trickster is historically accurate and holds real promise for Christian rethinking in “theology, philosophy, and practice of evil” and how it can be dealt with. This is a fascinating story that helps the reader reframe basic elements of our worldview of good and evil.

Through his careful interpretation of Paul’s letters and broader New Testament teaching, the author shows how Christ’s submission to the church models an appropriate understanding of gender roles and servant leadership. As Christ submits to the church, so all Christians must submit to, serve, and care for one other. • Nurture : Give And Get What You Need To Flourish

    $19.99

Nurture (verb): 1. To give tender care and protection. 2. To encourage to grow, develop, thrive, and be successful.

This beautifully describes what God’s daughters so desperately need. In this heartfelt work, Lisa explains how women of all ages must awaken and restore their capacity to give and receive nurture.

The need for this indelible force is far more urgent than we know. Is it possible we are too busy surviving to assure that the vulnerable among us thrive? Are we too guarded, wounded, and afraid to open our lives to the nurture of others? What can be done to reestablish this language of the feminine heart? It is time women are healed and empowered.

If you have never experienced nurture, this is your season. Lisa’s stirring message shows you how to make these vital heart connections. We need each other’s comfort and assurance as we define ourselves, find our voice, and begin to fulfill God’s purpose on Earth.

In Lisa’s own words: “There is such a resonance in my spirit . . . this is in fact our season to grow, develop, and thrive. Heaven is passionately and purposefully reconnecting with our wounded, war-torn earth and the people who inhabit her. In this season I believe the daughters of God will prove integral agents. Nurture is not expensive-it is expansive. The life of everyone enlarges when it is added. As this happens, we will cease to merely function-we will indeed flourish.”

Paul’s absence from the church had allowed serious problems to arise within the Corinthian community, but the problems that he addresses in this letter do not always seem based on explicitly theological ideas. The brilliance of Paul, though, is that he frames the issues in theological terms and reflects on them in the light of the gospel.

When the book of Acts is mentioned, a cluster of issues spring to mind, including speaking in tongues and baptism with the Holy Spirit, church government and practice, and missionary methods and strategies. At the popular level, Acts is more often mined for answers to contemporary debates than heard for its natural inflections.

Instead of using Acts as a prooftext, this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume brings a biblical-theological framework to the account to expose Luke’s major themes as they relate to the book as a whole. With this framework in place, Alan Thompson argues that Acts is an account of the ‘continuing story’ of God’s saving purposes. Consequently we find that Luke wants to be read in light of the Old Testament promises and the continuing reign of Christ in the inaugurated kingdom.

Read in this way as a snapshot of God’s dynamic, unfolding kingdom, the book of Acts begins to regain the deep relevance it had in the first century.

Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.

  • Saving Desire : The Seduction Of Christian Theology

    $22.99

Traditional Christian theology has generally treated desire as a dark and negative force intimately related to sin – something to be restricted and repressed, closeted and controlled. But, according to LeRon Shults and Jan-Olav Henriksen’s Saving Desire, we see only part of the picture if we do not also perceive that desire can be a powerful force for great good. Grounding their work firmly in the experiential realm of human life, the eight eminent theologians contributing to this volume celebrate together the positivity, the sociality, and the physicality of saving desire – that is, humankind’s innate desire not only for the “good life” but also, more vitally, for the life-transforming goodness of God.

  • How To Read The Bible In Changing Times

    $20.00

Many find it difficult to take words that were written thousands of years ago and apply them to twenty-first-century life in the Western world. How do we read God’s unchanging Word in a world that is increasingly defined by change?

How to Read the Bible in Changing Times shows everyday Christians how to interpret and apply the Scriptures regardless of time and culture. Rather than seeing the Bible as a magic answer book, a list of commands to obey, or a series of promises to claim, this insightful book allows the Bible to retain its identity as a complex, inspired document while showing that the truth it contains is relevant and life-changing. It shows the reader how to:
*determine the meaning of the text in its original context
    *identify culturally relative features
*understand what the text teaches about God, his will, and his purposes
*apply the truths discovered to contemporary life situations

It even shows readers how to discern God’s will on the many modern issues that the Bible does not directly address.

  • What They Didnt Teach You In Seminary

    $20.00

In churches today, there are ever fewer older pastors speaking into the lives of younger leaders, and fewer younger leaders feeling there is much to be learned from the experience of their elders. Street-smart wisdom is gone from training as there are many men and women preparing pastors who have never themselves pastored a church. Intriguingly, even older, more seasoned pastors yearn for insight into their task, as they remain “undiscipled” in the school of leadership.

In What They Didn’t Teach You in Seminary, veteran pastor James Emery White provides the kind of mentoring young pastors desperately need but cannot get from academia or leadership books. These “from the trenches” insights will help them transform their relationships with staff and parishoners, develop healthy boundaries, deliver hard truths, avoid spiritual pitfalls, use their time effectively, and much more.

From leading Old Testament scholar Douglas A. Knight comes the latest volume in WJK’s Library of Ancient Israel series. Using socio-anthropological theory and archaeological evidence, Knight argues that while the laws in the Hebrew Bible tend to reflect the interests of those in power, the majority of ancient Israelites-located in villages-developed their own unwritten customary laws to regulate behavior and resolve legal conflicts in their own communities. This book includes numerous examples from village, city, and cult.

Volumes in the Library of Ancient Israel draw on multiple disciplines-such as archaeology, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, and literary criticism-to illuminate the everyday realities and social subtleties these ancient cultures experienced. This series employs sophisticated methods that depict the reality of the people behind the Hebrew Bible and interprets these insights for a wide variety of readers.

  • With : Reimagining The Way You Relate To God

    $19.99

Instead of life over, under, from, or even for God, what leads us into freedom and restoration is life with God. Why are American Christians, who have more access to biblical teaching than any other people in history, failing to experience the freedom of the Christian life? Why are pastors, those closest to the work and ministry, burning out at an alarming rate? Why do many church members, who give large amounts of their time and wealth to Christ and his kingdom, secretly question the legitimacy of their efforts? And why are spiritual seekers dismissing the validity of the Christian message? Is it possible we’ve misunderstood the call of the Christian life?

With explores the narrative of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and the stories of faithful women and men throughout history, to show that we were created to be with God, and that restoring this connection is his mission. When we neglect this calling in favor of a life over, under, or even for God, we will not know the freedom Christ intended. But a life lived in rich communion with God cultivates faith, hope, and love in a way that transforms both us and the broken world we inhabit.

For more than a decade, Marion Jones was hailed as the “the fastest woman on the planet.” At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, she became the first woman ever to win five medals at one Olympics. That same year, the Associated Press and ESPN named her Athlete of the Year. She was on the cover of Vogue and Time. She seemed to have it all-fame, fortune, talent, and international acclaim. Now she is a convicted felon.
The trouble started in 2003 when she lied to federal agents about her use of a performance-enhancing drug and her knowledge of a check fraud scam. In 2007, no longer able to live with the lies, she admitted the truth. In a sad end to what seemed like a storybook career, she was stripped of her medals, and her track-and-field records were wiped from the books.

She was incarcerated at Carswell federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas-a prison known for its violence and abuse. While there, she kept herself in shape and her sanity intact by running on a dirt track and a treadmill in the prison’s improvised weight room. But her imprisonment was not the end for Marion Jones. In fact, it marked a new beginning. She is now using her story to change the lives of people the world over and inspire others who, like her, face obstacles that seem insurmountable.

On the Right Track is the candidly told story of how Marion came to grips with her lies and the consequences of her actions, and how she found meaning in all of it. What she tells her children and has now applied to her own life is that when you make a mistake, you admit it, you accept the consequences, you move on, you make the wrong a right. She teaches her children and others to take a break and pause before making impulsive and potentially harmful decisions.

At the heart of this book are real issues that we all face: learning to grow through pain; making decisions that will help us far into the future; overcoming failure and discouragement; and applying practical principles that point the way to personal and spiritual breakthrough.

Have you ever raised funds for your church, another organization, or a mission trip? Maybe you felt uncomfortable about asking people to donate money. It’s time to change the way you view this important task.

“Fundraising is, first and foremost, a ministry,” renowned author and teacher Henri Nouwen writes in the introduction. “It’s a way of announcing our vision and inviting other people into our mission.”

  • Unnoticed Neighbors : A Pilgrimage Into The Social Justice Story (Reprinted)

    $14.99

    This isn’t a book.

    This is a pilgrimage.

Pilgrimage takes us outside our expected patterns and into something immediately more challenging and dynamic. It’s on pilgrimage that our souls begin a journey that takes us up mountain passes and brings us down transformed.

This pilgrimage of Unnoticed Neighbors seeks to do the same so we can taste and see what’s around us and meet the different people with whom we share this world-a world that is both beautiful and ugly.

You’ll meet women from northern Uganda who are AIDS and civil war survivors and Burmese refugees living down the street in U.S. neighborhoods. You’ll uncover why the poor remain poor, despite aid and charity. You’ll see the saving grace of education and the real protection it gives to some from the most brutal injustices. You’ll go behind and into the human trafficking underworld and perhaps you’ll see your neighbor-from across the street or across the world-for the first time.

    Additional Info
For the first-century Roman world the cross was first and foremost an instrument of shameful and violent execution. But early Christians, who had seen their world upended by the atoning power of the cross of Christ, came to view it in an entirely different light. Deeply scandalous, it was paradoxically glorious. For the cross of Christ marked the epochal saving event in God’s dealings with Israel and the world. And its meaning could not be fathomed or encircled by a single image or formulation.

Since its publication in 2000, Recovering the Scandal of the Cross has initiated among evangelicals a new conversation about the nature of the atonement and how it should be expressed in the varied and global contexts of today. In this second edition Green and Baker have clarified and enlarged their argument in a way that will continue to provoke thought and conversation on this critical topic.

  • Truth Considered And Applied

    $29.99

For philosophy and theology students, Truth Considered and Applied examines the leading theories of truth in relation to postmodernism, history, and the Christian faith. Author Stewart E. Kelly defends Christianity in the face of postmodernist challenges that would label such religious faith as merely one version of truth among many in a pluralistic world. Likewise, in looking at Christianity as a historical faith, Kelly supports the need for Christians to develop a hermeneutic that does justice to the biblical texts and our informed understanding of the past in general; because if a genuine past cannot be recovered in some meaningful sense, the claims of Jesus being incarnate and risen from the dead are seriously jeopardized.

  • Fighting For Your Prophetic Promises

    $15.00

Many Christians who receive a prophetic message, or “word,” from the Lord don’t understand that its fulfillment is not necessarily automatic. Others don’t know how to determine if a prophetic word really is from the Lord. And still others don’t understand what prophetic ministry is and how it works. A veteran prophetic warrior, Barbara Wentroble is aware of the need for training in Bible-based prophetic ministry. With insight and wisdom, she explains not only how prophetic ministry works, but also how believers today–like biblical characters of old–may need to engage in spiritual warfare in order to receive promises that really are from God. Wentroble shows that prophetic words are not confined to church walls, and are not for a select few Christians but for all. She gives readers the guidelines and prophetic etiquette they need to help prevent abuse and misunderstanding, while helping them find the incredible blessing of the biblical gift of prophecy.

  • God In The Present Tense Cycle B

    $12.95

One of the enduring legacies of the Revised Common Lectionary is its ability to draw different parts of scripture together to form a coherent narrative, drawing congregations from around the world into the life-changing message of faith in Jesus Christ. Each element of the lectionary brings its own point of view into this message, giving us insights into its origins, the impact on its original hearers, as well as its relevance for our lives today. In the gospel message, we see the drama of Jesus’ life and ministry and are challenged to join in it.

God in the Present Tense covers the middle third of the Pentecost season, examining the ministry of Jesus as presented in the gospels of Mark and John. In this collection of sermons, Carter endeavors to show how these passages are not confined to a singular moment in history, but instead are relevant and valuable in our own time, as well. Jesus’ ministry was not just for first-century Palestine but for all people everywhere throughout time. These sermons will lift the stories off the page and give them new life in our present time.

They will address questions such as “Will everyone be saved?” and “Does God Get What He Wants in the End?” as well as reviewing in depth, everything Jesus said about Hell.

Chan and Sprinkle lay all the evidence on the table and present all the facts from Scripture, so that people can decide what to believe for themselves.

  • Is Hell For Real Or Does Everyone Go To Heaven

    $16.99

The traditional, biblically based view of Hell is again being questioned by people both in and outside the walls of the church. How could Jesus, the one who died for the sins of the world, condemn millions of people to eternal torment because they didn’t believe the right things about him? Doesn’t God’s goodness make it impossible for him to commit such an act of seemingly vengeful judgment? Isn’t eternal punishment disproportionate, and therefore unjust, in light of the temporal nature of all human failings? Can’t Jesus’ love overcome all who resist him, even the most unrepentant of sinners? In light of difficult questions like these—and in part as a response to the controversy stirred up by Rob Bell’s Love Wins—this book affirms with clarity and even-handedness the historic Christian doctrine regarding the final destiny of the unsaved. Together, the contributors explore the biblical and theological reasons for continuing to believe in hell, revealing along the way some of the consequences for the church when it loses sight of this doctrine. Is Hell for Real or Does Everyone Go to Heaven? answers some of today’s toughest questions with deep biblical insights and an irenic tone. This book is ideal for group studies on the topic or for individuals looking for a quick way to better understand the discussion.

  • Now To Him

    $14.99

The case for a more biblical approach to worship which honours the divine and allows space for wonder.

The authors, a theologian and a worship leader, are concerned that modern worship is growing self-indulgent: more about performance, less about an encounter with the divine. They consider what the Bible teaches about worship, addressing four key concerns: Worship as entertainment; worship which lacks wonder and awe; worship as irrelevant to mission; worship which gratifies the worshipper rather than honouring the Almighty. The authors each contribute six chapters, looking at biblical aspects of worship. They tackle worship and holiness; worship with passion; worship and the danger of idolatry. How, they ask, can we rediscover the mystery of an encounter with God, in corporate worship? How can leaders open themselves and their congregations to the heart of God, releasing his presence and power? How should we craft the unique dynamic of a people gathered to sing to God?

  • Rumors Of God

    $18.99

Rumors of God is a call to Christians seeking a vision of the life God is calling them to, one that transcends the shallowness of our culture. Most Christians today live with tension. What is promised in the Scriptures seems like a far cry from what we experience in our lives. As a result, we can lose our passion to live out our faith in the world, and the God of Scripture seems more a series of rumors of divinity than actual tangible, accessible reality. As our world grows more ungodly, it often feels as if the future of the people of God hangs in the balance. In the seventh century B.C., the prophet Habakkuk also fell prey to a spirit of discouragement, and he penned these words: “LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.” Today we live in a similar spiritual and cultural moment to that of Habakkuk, and we, too, long to renew the words and deeds of God in our time. Like Habakkuk we question the future of the church and of God’s mission in our lives. In Rumors of God, authors Darren Whitehead and Jon Tyson call us to reject what is plausible, and to cry out for God to bring what is possible in our lives and in the church.

It will resonate with Christians seeking a vision of the life God is calling them to, one that transcends the shallowness of our culture.
