Endless adventures while growing up in Kenya; wild animals close to the front door; an American community built on the side of the Great Rift Valley: these are the settings for the growing pains, trials and triumphs of a young Canadian-British boy studying in an American school in Kenya.

The threat of Mau Mau, a period of civil unrest, and the growing movement towards independent nations in Africa paralleled the spiritual and emotional unrest in the youthful rebellion of David Phillips.

Rift Valley Academy, a boarding school for missionary children, aimed to provide excellence in academic studies and spiritual formation. Unfortunately, the temptation of stepping out of bounds into the forests close by was stronger than the threats of losing points in the ever present Point System.

  • Im Fat And Nobody Cares

    $16.49

The stares, the mocking laughter, the hurt, and the pain; this is one woman’s journey of learning that being fat really does matter to everyone. In “I’m Fat and Nobody Cares”, Kathleen Frank tackles the many issues that face people who battle obesity and the reasons why they do. This is the author’s personal testimony of how she overcame sexual and emotional abuse, her constant struggle with weight and how she was able to find the Lord amidst every temptation to turn against Him.

Through her own battle and heartbreak, Kathleen attempts to uncover the roots of this rampant issue and bring to light the pain that she and many others have experienced through weight gain. She sheds light on the real reasons why many people have become obese and how there is hope for them. The author could have very easily used this book as an outlet for her emotions, anger especially, but instead this book is very tactfully written.

A rough childhood, two bumpy marriages with one ending in an affair that changed her life forever, Kathleen details her own struggle of weighing over 330 pounds and how through the love of Christ and the practical implementation of His Word in her life she has been able to come to terms with her weight and believe God for a miracle.

  • Faith Factor : The Art And Science Of Faith

    $17.49

Faith is a universal principle, simple as perhaps it is complex. In life we unknowingly interact with delicate laws. We plant a seed and expect a tree. Although much science is involved in the transformation, life has ‘user friendly’ packages ready for implementation. A computer’s designer allows man to communicate with machine through the coordination of complex subsystems – anyone who presses the power button gets the same result!

Faith is the law God created by which man accesses sources and resources outside of himself. To every crisis God has programmed a solution. We simply start the process.
Let the seed show you how!

A textbook on how faith works:

    * Looking behind the scenes of visible miracles
    * Perfecting faith at the point of greatest weakness
    * Interfaces – God’s supernatural solutions to our problems
    * Miracle faith requires miracle ‘hearing’

Now in paperback, Senator Joe Lieberman shows how ceasing all activity for a weekly Sabbath observance has profound benefit-including health, relationships, and even career advancement-for people of all religions.

The Sabbath is a gift that Senator Joe Lieberman, as an observant Jew, received from his parents who, in turn, received it from their parents, who received it from generations of Jews before them. According to ancient tradition, the line of transmission extends back to Moses at Mt. Sinai, who received the Sabbath as the fourth of the Ten Commandments. In this book, Lieberman offers the gift of Sabbath observance-a gift that has anchored, ordered, and inspired his life-to readers of all faiths.

In the past century, the Sabbath has fallen on hard times. It is thought of as just another day or as a time to squeeze in some extra errands or recreation that may have been missed during the work week. Combining personal and political memoir with history and broadly informed religious reflection, this book is a practical how-to guide with simple suggestions for introducing the Sabbath into your own life. With The Gift of Rest by your side, no more will weekends pass in a blur of meaningless activity.

  • Love Your Enemies

    $25.00

From 1971-1974 John Piper attended the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München for doctoral work. In choosing a dissertation topic he decided to explore Jesus’s command in the Synoptic Gospels to love one’s enemies, and its relationship to similar ethical exhortations in the epistles (the Early Christian Paraenesis).Using a “history of traditions” approach, Piper begins by examining each New Testament reference to Jesus’s command in an attempt to place its origin within the broader paraenetic tradition. Piper moves on to survey similar exhortations for enemy love in the environment of the early church, then analyzes this particular command of Jesus within the broader context of his whole message. He investigates the theological significance of Jesus’s love command in the paraenesis and finally concludes by focusing on the Gospel tradition’s use of the command, particularly in Matthew and Luke.First published by Cambridge University Press in the Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series, this repackaged edition features a new, extensive introduction. A serious work of Christian scholarship by a long-time respected author and pastor, this will be of interest to scholars, students, and lay people who have training in New Testament studies.

  • Ruth

    $25.99

    Introduction

    1. A Dialogue Of Determination

    2. Terms Of Endearment

    3. A Cloaked Covenant

    4. A Dialogue Of Identity

    Conclusion

    Additional Info
    from the Introduction:

Described by Goethe as “the most charming little whole” of antiquity, Ruth has long been recognized for its literary quality. This beautifully composed narrative continues to attract readers across generations and boundaries of gender, class and ethnicity. In fact, the beauty of the book often distracts from the practical nature of the narrative. For all of its appeal, Ruth is, after all a story about family and survival. The marriage between Ruth and Boaz is a levirate marriage. The goal of this practice is to ensure the continuation and stability of the family line. Thus this “charming little whole” has as its subject preservation of life in the face of death and upholding memory to ward off the loss of identity.

This story of survival is short; it consists of four chapters with elements of loss and recovery; famine and harvest, barrenness and fruitfulness, life and death. These elements afford the book a broad appeal as it speaks to various stages and seasons of life, all the while upholding the power of faithfulness against an ever-changing backdrop. Named after one of the major characters, the book of Ruth tells the story of Naomi of Bethlehem and her family “in the days when the judges ruled.”

…So much of what happens in Ruth happens where no one can see. Ruth binds herself to Naomi in the “in between place” of Moab and Judah. No one is there to witness it. Similarly, Ruth asks Boaz for redemption in the middle of the night when we presume everyone else is asleep. These events allow for the inclusion of Ruth as Boaz’s people, first as a gleaner and then as a wife. The pattern of what happens away from our observation and then bursts forth where we can see it draws on the images of planting and harvest, conception and birth. On a theological level, it suggests that even in the famine times, God is planting seed, preparing for the next harvest, even when we cannot see it. We must assume then, that whatever we know or recognize about the work of God is only a small piece of the larger whole. We cannot know it all.

  • Seat At The Table

    $14.99

Why are so many 20- and 30-something Christians disappearing from the church?

They are told how much the church wants young people, yet there is growing suspicion among young believers about who is in and who is out of the scope of Christian orthodoxy. Through this suspicion, a rift between the generations has emerged. In the face of frustration, of being cut out because they don t seem to fit, young believers often take their gifts and leave the church.

This book helps those who feel displaced by this generational collision to find a sense of place and welcome with a church that is still becoming all that God wants it to be.

If you are a young person who wonders if there is a place in the church for someone like you, or if you want to know if your own church can be the kind of body in which young people are welcome, A Seat at the Table will give you a new personal and kingdom perspective. Embrace the challenge to re-imagine your relationship with the church in light of this generational collision , not seeing it as an unredeemable rift, but as an opportunity to give and receive hospitality.

    Additional Info
Do you send the wrong signals when you share the gospel? The importance of signs for communicating truth has been recognized throughout the ages. Crystal L. Downing traces this awareness from biblical texts, through figures from church history like John Wycliffe and William Tyndale, to more recent writers Samuel Taylor Coleridge and C. S. Lewis. In the nineteenth century, this legacy of interest in the activity of signs brought about a new field of academic study. In this book, Downing puts the discipline of semiotics within reach for beginners through analysis of the movements key theorists, Ferdinand de Saussure, Charles Sanders Peirce, Mikhail Bakhtin and others. She then draws out the implications for effective communication of the gospel of Jesus Christ within our shifting cultural landscape. Her fundamental thesis is that “Failure to understand how signs work–as effects of the cultures we seek to affect–inevitably undermines not just our political and moral agendas but, worse, the gospel of Jesus Christ.” Writing with humor, clarity and flare, Downing lucidly explains the sophisticated thinking of leaders in semiotics for nonexperts. Of value to all those interested in communication in any context, this work will be of special interest to students majoring in communications or English or to students in evangelism and preaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.

  • Eternal Generation Of The Son

    $35.99

Should all Christians, especially evangelicals, hold on to the doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son? What is lost if we don’t? Theologian Kevin Giles defends the historically orthodox and ecumenical doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son of God. He argues on biblical, historical and theological bases that, given its fundamental meaning, this formulation is indispensable, irreplaceable and faithful to Christian revelation. The book will be especially helpful in the current discussion of this doctrine. It will also be of interest to students, pastors and laypersons who want to delve into the Christian understanding of the identity of the Son of God and serious study of trinitarian theology.

  • Christless Christianity : The Alternative Gospel Of The American Church

    $17.00

Is it possible that we have left Christ out of Christianity? Is the faith and practice of American Christians today more American than Christian? These are the provocative questions Michael Horton addresses in this well-received, insightful book. He argues that while we invoke the name of Christ, too often Christ and the Christ-centered gospel are pushed aside. The result is a message and a faith that are, in Horton’s words, “trivial, sentimental, affirming, and irrelevant.” This alternative “gospel” is a message of moralism, personal comfort, self-help, self-improvement, and individualistic religion. It trivializes God, making him a means to our selfish ends. Horton skillfully diagnoses the problem and points to the solution: a return to the unadulterated gospel of salvation. This insightful book will guide readers in reorienting their faith and the church’s purpose toward the Good News of the gospel. • Word Plus Spirit Equals Power (Reprinted)

    $18.00

Proven Formula for a Balanced, Effective Christian Life

Too often churches emphasize the Bible without welcoming the work of the Holy Spirit, who inspired the Bible. Or they focus on seeking manifestations of the Spirit while neglecting sound Bible teaching. The result: a schism in their faith lives in which they cut God–and his power–out of Christianity’s equation. How can God draw a lost world to his Son through people who are powerless?

With over 170 years of diverse ministry experience among them, respected veteran leaders R. T. Kendall, Charles Carrin, and Jack Taylor restore balance to the Christian walk. They show that when the Word is faithfully preached and the Holy Spirit warmly welcomed, the Lord manifests his power, bringing salvation, miracles, healings, heart understanding, and much more. Only when Christians honor the Word and the Spirit can they lead empowered, fruitful lives.

  • Lectionary Stories For Preaching And Teaching Cycle C

    $12.95

Everyone loves a good story. Storytellers who excel at their craft have the ability to draw readers or listeners into the worlds they create, using characters and situations to entertain and enlighten us. Jesus, the Master Storyteller, often spoke using parables — short stories that conveyed a spiritual truth. By drawing his listeners into his story, he unlocked their minds and hearts to hear the truth he was trying to relate to them.

This compilation of stories for the seasons of Lent and Easter taken from StoryShare follows in that same tradition. StoryShare, a part of SermonSuite.com, is written by various authors brought together to meditate on scriptures in the Revised Common Lectionary for Cycle C and create stories that flesh out these passages, allowing readers to see these words in a new way. These stories can be whimsical and light-hearted or poignant and reflective, even tragic. But they all strive to bring us to a deeper understanding of the scriptures and the God who inspired them. Some of the stories are even based on actual events experienced by the authors, events that influenced their perspective on Christianity.

Useful as sermon illustrations, stand alone sermons, teaching aides, personal devotions, or even just for entertaining reading, “Stories for Teaching and Preaching “will draw you into new worlds with vibrant and engaging images, deepening your relationship with God in the process.

  • Lectionary Preaching Workbook Series 9 Cycle C

    $19.95

“I am very impressed with the way Dr. Ellingsen outlines this” Lectionary Preaching Workbook… “Here is a splendid workbook. It is rich in detail and theological insight. Ellingsen writes clearly, is sensitive to context, and widens [our] horizons… This book should be required reading for all pastors, seminary students, and other lay people who are involved in ministry with adults and youth. It should be regarded as a textbook to enhance one’s knowledge about the meaning of the seasons or major festivals of the [church] year.”
    Reverend Jesse Averett Jr.
Presiding Elder, Christian Methodist Episcopal Church
“If a preacher is looking for quick and easy sermons, this tool is not what s/he is seeking. But if a preacher is looking for solid biblical scholarship, thoughtful exegesis, a possible preaching theme for each of the appointed lessons for each Sunday in the lectionary year accompanied by a variety of ideas for how that theme might be developed, then CSS’ latest “Lectionary Preaching Workbook” will be a valuable resource. Built around the Revised Common Lectionary and the Christian church year, Pr. Mark Ellingsen has put together a highly useful resource.
Ellingsen’s passion for justice and equality as applied to the social issues of the day comes through clearly in some of his “sermon moves” as well as the socio-economic and political illustrative connections he offers. Incorporating insights and quotations from a variety of sources — everything from modern brain research to Luther, Calvin, Liberation Theology, Bonhoeffer, Pascal, and Barth — Ellingsen strives to connect God’s word to our world in ways that the preacher will find stimulating and inspirational.”

    Assistant to the Bishop

When it comes to preaching from a lectionary, it can often be a daunting task to create new ways of preaching about a passage that has been around for thousands of years. It would seem that, after a while, there would be no new ways of looking at a scripture passage. A different perspective, however, can be most beneficial in finding a new way to help your congregation see each of the readings.
This is the inspiration behind the “Lectionary Preaching Workbook “series and this special edition for Lent and Easter. By providing new insights into each of the readings in the Revised Common, Roman Catholic, and Episcopal Lectionaries, Mark Ellingsen has given pastors everywher

  • Heretics : The Other Side Of Early Christianity

    $35.99

According to the official view, held for almost two thousand years, early Christianity was marked by great harmony, and heresy only emerged at a later stage. This book, written in nontechnical language for interested non-theologians, argues that such a picture is wishful thinking.
Using all available sources, including newly-discovered Gnostic texts, Professor Luedemann argues that in many areas, ‘heresy’ in fact preceded ‘orthodoxy’ and was later forcibly replaced by it. The controversies shed an interesting light on the human character and concerns of the first Christians, who were occupied not only with right belief but also with power. The first chapter investigates the positions of Christians in Jerusalem in the first two centuries, since they were the ones who in fact introduced the concept of heresy into the church, and pays particular attention to the revision of the portrait of Paul and his theology. Then it goes on to the dramatic events around Marcion and his approach to a scriptural canon. Thirdly, it examines the conflicts underlying the Johannine writings, the formation of the Apostles’ Creed and the formation of the New Testament canon.
Professor Luedemann argues that his findings have important and liberating consequences for the understanding of both Christianity and the Bible.

There are many views today on morality, relativity and right and wrong. Dr. Tony Evans refuses to let the voice of God be drowned out amidst the clamor of the crowd. In the age where people can get a “no-fault” divorce (When is it ever nobody’s fault’) believers who claim to live by God’s word cannot dodge the issue: we cannot skip it, run from it, or ignore it. God has spoken clearly on this subject and while it is far from easy to address, it must be dealt with. Combining a high view of marriage, compassion, and biblical authority, Tony Evans gives invaluable insight into divorce and remarriage as he explores real-life fears and questions by looking at the issue from God’s vantage point, not from our emotional one.

  • How Should Christians Vote

    $6.99

Christians are a large and influential voting block today. But as each governmental election approaches, an increasing polarity occurs within those claiming the Christian faith. This comes as a result of party-voting rather than voting according to Biblical mandates and authority. To refocus correctly, Dr. Tony Evans goes back to the basics and teaches on how God established government as a divine institution whose tasks include promoting the well-being of those within its realm and protection from evil. Scripture trumps all political alliances making the voting decision a critical opportunity for Christians to promote God’s Word and His values through whom they elect. In the face of increasing emotions the Christians representing God’s kingdom values should communicate His truths in a manner reflective of the King – in a gracious and strategic way. Dr. Evans also looks at the necessary qualities in a good candidate which include intellect, education, competency, skill and spiritual beliefs – whether certain issues are non-negotiables, and how a responsible citizen is to research a candidates’ position in order to evaluate it against God’s Word.

  • Rose Guide To The Temple

    $34.99

In the late afternoon sunlight, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem is one of the most breathtaking places in the world. This was the site of Solomon’s great Temple, a “house of prayer for all people” – the center of worship and celebration.
For centuries it stood, until the Babylonians captured Jerusalem and destroyed the Jewish temple. The devastation was both physical and spiritual: the Temple was an awesome structure, but it was also the place of the Lord’s presence with his people, the place of worship.

About seventy years later, the people returned to Jerusalem and built a second temple. It wasn’t as spectacular as the original, and those who remembered Solomon’s golden pillars, wept over the difference. Yet it was the house of God to the exiles who came home.

Some 300 years later, Herod the Great, one of the greatest builders in the ancient world, renovated and expanded the second Temple and made it famous, rivaling the finest monuments of that time. This is the temple where Jesus was dedicated as a baby, where he honored the widow for giving all she had, and where he threw out the money changers.

The Temple is important, both as a historical and architectural masterpiece, and as a spiritual symbol of God’s desire to dwell with his people.

This full-color book gives a complete easy-to-understand overview of the history of the Temple in Jerusalem. People who enjoy Bible study will love the fact that it answers many questions about how the Temple looked during biblical times. Bible scholars and professors will enjoy the well-annotated text. The author is archaeologist and professor Dr. Randall Price. He has spent more than 30 years exploring the Holy Land studying the Temple.

This book has more than 100 images, charts, diagrams, photos, and illustrations, many of which have never published before. It covers the span of time from Abraham to modern day.

This latest collection of sermons by Eric James is also the best, drawing as it does on a lifetime of experience, a deep personal faith, and a love of people, music, literature and the richness of life. It also has a valedictory quality, since during the period covered by the collection the charity Christian Action, of which Eric James had been director, closed down after fifty years, and he resigned from being Preacher to Gray’s Inn, an office which he had held for nineteen years. Here too is a farewell to an era, with ‘In memoriam’ sermons on a number of distinguished figures who embodied that era, and constant references to a world which is passing away.aHowever, that is only part of the story. In Season, Out of Season is dedicated to an ordinand preparing to preach to the next generation, and like Eric James’s favourite collect, ‘0 God, who hast prepared for them that love thee such good things as pass man’s understanding…’, it is full of hope for the future.

  • Daddy Is That Story True Or Were You Just Preaching

    $16.99

Popular author James W. Moore recalls how several years ago, while delivering the sermon at his church one Sunday morning, he had told a moving story about a boy and his dog. The author’s then-five-year-old son, Jeff, was fascinated by the story, but feeling a bit uncertain about some of the details of it, during the family’s car ride home from church, Jeff asked his father, “Daddy, is that story true, or were you just preaching?”

Highly amused by Jeff’s question, Jim Moore went on to explain to his young son that there are two kinds of stories: TRUE stories, stories that happened factually in history; and TRUTH stories, stories like Jesus’ parables, which are shared to underscore a dramatic truth in life.

The several short chapters and stories in this book are designed to highlight such life-truths, with chapter titles such as “Go out Singing,” “Roadblocks,” “Should I Forgive?” “One Step at a Time,” “Who’s in Control Here?” “What Can One Person Do?” “Tell Me, Please, How to Be Happy,” “Why not You?” “Keep on Keeping On,” “Jesus: The Message and the Messenger,” “The Importance of Uniqueness,” and others.

Not for the first time, reviewers have had very mixed feelings about Dr Barclay’s writing, and his approach to the theology of the sacraments has been found wanting. On the other hand, considerable personal correspondence and requests to use the liturgy with which the book concludes show that once again, for the ordinary reader, the author has managed to bring new meaning to what he claims has become ‘a ritual rather than a reality’. `When we can neither grasp nor teach the truth,’ Dr Barclay goes on, ‘it is better to get hold of some part of the truth which we can understand and on which we can act. All I have tried to do is to examine the history of the sacrament, and then to set down a view of it which I know is incomplete and which I know ineans something vital to those to whom it has been through the years presented. • Gaius Diary : The Continuing Saga Of One Mans Impact On The Early Christian

    $12.95

In this gripping narrative we hear of many historical events that cause perilous times for the fledgling church. Gaius tells of the fall of Jerusalem and the martyrdom of Christians torn apart by wild animals in the Colosseum and of others perishing as human torches in Nero’s garden. Near the end of the book Paul’s own death is very movingly described. His friends shout encouragement as Paul approaches his execution:
We will fight the good fight…as did you. We will carry on!
Despite seemingly overwhelming persecution, the church survives and successfully incorporated Gentile and Jewish Christians with the incredible shepherding of two apostles: Paul (founder of many Gentile churches) and Peter (Jesus’ disciple and head of the Jerusalem church).

  • Christianity In England From Roman Times To The Reformation 2

    $45.00

This is the second of three volumes on the history of Christianity in England from Roman times to the Reformation. It covers the period from the Norman Conquest to the death of John Wyclif. Although there has been much scholarly work in the last fifty years on Christianity in England during these crucial and most interesting centuries, this has mostly concentrated on specific and fairly circumscribed topics or quite narrow spans of time. There has been a paucity of works which attempt to describe and comment on the changing fortunes of Christianity in England in this mediaeval period as a whole; and none which takes account of recent scholarly work up to the end of the twentieth century. This is an opportune moment to fill a gap, and to provide a comprehensive and analytical overview of a pivotal age for the development of Christianity in England, which will be attractive and useful to students of history and theology, and also to clergy, ministers, and a much wider readership. Christine had shared everything with Jennifer. There was a moment of silence as the two women considered all that Christine had confessed. Jennifer could see that Christine still felt a great amount of love for Bo.

“Christine, there is one question you must still be able to answer.” Christine knew what Jennifer was pointing to. “Christine, if you see Bo Wyoming again, and he asks you to forgive him for the last twenty-four years, and that he still is in love with you, what will you say?”

Christine had considered this very question throughout the last twenty-four years, especially over the past two or three years. She answered Jennifer very slowly as if to think through each word she spoke.

“I am no longer a young girl in love with a budding hero. I’ve seen a lot, I’ve experienced a lot these past twenty-four years. In some ways, I am happy with my life today. Yet I admit, that I have been lonely for many years. I have never lost my love for Bo even though I have no idea how he feels about me.”

“But what if he tells you that he still loves you Christine? What will you do then?”

“I hope that I am strong enough to tell him that I still love him very much. That I have always loved him and that I have never loved anyone else.”

Jennifer was pressing now but seemed to realize that Christine wanted to confront what might very well happen.

“Christine, if Bo asks you to marry him, will you?”

Christine had come to the end of the road. Jennifer was only asking what Christine had dreamed about.

“Jennifer, so many years have gone by, and we have lived such different lives.”

“Christine, will you marry Bo Wyoming if he proposes to you?”

    Christine knew her answer.

  • Province Of Joy

    $21.00

The Province of Joy is a book of hours rooted in the rich theological imagination of fiction writer, Flannery O’Connor. A lifelong Catholic devoted to liturgical prayer, O’Connor was also an avid reader and thinker who lived a rich spiritual life. Cutting a broad swath through spiritual and theological texts of every stamp, O’Connor engaged ideas about the nature of prayer and its many forms on a daily basis and often shared them in her correspondence, essays, and stories. This book brings together O’Connor’s practice of prayer and the rich spiritual context within which O’Connor lived and out of which she wrote.

O’Donnell organizes this devotional around six themes:

    * The False Self and the True Self
    * Blindness & Vision
    * Limitation & Grace
    * The Mystery of the Incarnation
    * Revelations & Resurrections
    * The Christian Comedy.

In addition, she presents brief reflections suggesting links between the themes, readings, and prayers of the day with O’Connor’s fiction. These parallels illustrate of some of the ways in which O’Connor’s practice of her faith and her art intersect and serve to illuminate one another.

Jesus was a Jew. The writers of Scripture were Jews. The early church emerged in a Jewish environment. So why the tension between Jews and Christians, and why have so few Jews come to believe in the Messiah?

In The Fig Tree Blossoms, Paul Liberman uncovers the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and helps Gentile believers come to a deeper understanding of the historic issues that have fed Jewish suspicion of Christians and Christian prejudice toward Jews.

But in these last days, Liberman writes, God is using the emerging Messianic movement to bring many Jews into His kingdom and to awaken Gentile Christians to their Jewish faith heritage. Instead of casting blame or assigning guilt, Liberman calls Gentile Christians to embrace their Messianic brothers’ and sisters’ Jewish expressions of faith in much the same way Paul encouraged his fellow Jews to embrace Gentile believers who were entering the first century church.

Discover how the “fig tree”-the biblical symbol for the Jewish people-is blossoming, and how many will come to enjoy its fruit.

Paul Liberman became a believer in the Messiah in 1971. He was instrumental in founding Messianic congregations in Washington, D.C., and San Diego and co-led a congregation in Israel. For five years, he served as the Executive Director of the International Messianic Jewish Alliance and is currently Publisher of The Messianic Times newspaper, a board member of MAOZ, Inc. (Israel), and President of the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America.

  • Connecting Christ : How To Discuss Jesus In A World Of Diverse Paths

    $18.99

What does Christian witness look like in post-Christendom?

While it is more important than ever to preach the Word of God, as Scripture exhorts us, it is also important that we dialogue with people from diverse perspectives. Unfortunately, too often the evangelical movement has been guilty of monologue in its engagement (or, more often, its disengagement) of people from other religious traditions and worldviews.

This book is designed to help evangelical Christ-followers remain orthodox while entering into meaningful discussions with people from other faith walks. We live in an age of extremes, where people tend toward monologue or dialogue: a cold turkey, drive-by-shooting evangelistic approach or a lifestyle, relational approach that avoids verbal witness. This book promotes evangelism and dialogue, not one to the exclusion of the other. And as such it also promotes the need for thoughtful, sensitive communication during a time when our nation is reeling from the onslaught of the culture wars.

The problem has not been our God or the Bible, but our approach to God and the Bible. As a result of our inauthentic witness, our God has looked all too common rather than as the uncommon God revealed as Jesus Christ.

In light of this spiritual and biblical gut check, our witness in the twenty-first century will likely look very different. As Metzger says, “I want Jesus to be the stumbling block to faith, not me.”

What would cause an eighteen-year-old old senior class president and homecoming queen from Nashville, Tennessee, to disappoint her parents by forgoing college, break her little brother’s heart, lose all but a handful of her friends (because the rest of them think she has gone off the deep end), and break up with the love of her life, all so she could move to Uganda, where she knew only one person but didn’t know any of the language? A passion to make a difference. Katie Davis left over Christmas break her senior year for a short mission trip to Uganda and her life was turned completely inside out. She found herself so moved by the people and children of Uganda that she knew her calling was to return and care for them. She has given up a relatively comfortable life-at a young age-to care for the less fortunate of this world. She was so moved by the need she witnessed, she’s centered her life around meeting that need. Katie, a charismatic and articulate young woman, is in the process of adopting thirteen children in Uganda, and she completely trusts God for daily provision for her and her family.

Despite the rough conditions in which Katie lives, she has found a life of service to God to be one of great joy. Katie’s children bring constant delight and help her help others by welcoming whoever comes to their door. As the challenges grow, so does Katie’s faith and her certainty that what she’s doing in Uganda, one person at a time, will have far-reaching rewards. It isn’t the life she planned, but it is the life she loves.

To further her reach into the needs of Ugandans, Katie established Amazima Ministries. The ministry matches orphaned children with sponors worldwide. Each sponsor’s $300/year provides schooling, school supplies, three hot meals a day, minor medical care, and spiritual encouragement. Katie expected to have forty children in the program; she had signed up 150 by January 2008; today it sponsors over 400. Another aspect of the ministry is a feeding program created for the displaced Karamojong people-Uganda’s poorest citizens. The program feeds lunch to over 1,200 children Monday-Friday and sends them home with a plate of food; it also offers basic medical care, Bible study, and general health training.

Katie Davis is more than fascinating, she’s inspiring, as she has wholeheartedly answered the call to serve.

After nine years serving on the staff of a big urban church in Atlanta, Barbara Brown Taylor arrives in rural Clarkesville, Georgia (population 1,500), following her dream to become the pastor of her own small congregation. The adjustment from city life to country dweller is something of a shock — Taylor is one of the only professional women in the community — but small-town life offers many of its own unique joys. Taylor has five successful years that see significant growth in the church she serves, but ultimately she finds herself experiencing “compassion fatigue” and wonders what exactly God has called her to do. She realizes that in order to keep her faith she may have to leave.

Taylor describes a rich spiritual journey in which God has given her more questions than answers. As she becomes part of the flock instead of the shepherd, she describes her poignant and sincere struggle to regain her footing in the world without her defining collar. Taylor’s realization that this may in fact be God’s surprising path for her leads her to a refreshing search to find Him in new places. Leaving Church will remind even the most skeptical among us that life is about both disappointment and hope — and ultimately, renewal.

The Lord’s commitment to make himself known throughout the nations is the overarching missionary theme of the Bible and the central theological concern of Exodus.

Countering scholarly tendencies to fragment the text over theological difficulties, Ross Blackburn contends that Exodus should be read as a unified whole, and that an appreciation of its missionary theme in its canonical context is of great help in dealing with the difficulties that the book poses. For example, how is Exodus 6:3 best understood? Is there a tension between law and gospel, or mercy and judgment? How should we understand the painstaking detail of the tabernacle chapters?

From a careful examination of Exodus, Blackburn demonstrates that

*the Lord humbled Pharaoh so the world would know that only God can save
*the Lord gave Israel the law so that its people might display his goodness to the nations, living in a state of order and blessing
*the Lord dealt with Israel’s idolatry severely, yet mercifully, for his goodness cannot be known if his glory is compromised

In the end, Exodus not only sheds important light on the church’s mission, but also reveals what kind of God the Lord is, one who pursues his glory and our good, ultimately realizing both as he makes himself known in Christ Jesus.
