December 1941 : 31 Days That Changed America And Saved The World
$22.99Add to cartIn the days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, eyes in America were focused on the war in Europe or distracted by the elevated mood sweeping the country in the final days of the Great Depression. But when planes dropped out of a clear blue sky and bombed the American naval base and aerial targets in Hawaii, all of that changed. December 1941 takes readers into the moment-by-moment ordeal of a nation waking to war.Best-selling author Craig Shirley celebrates the American spirit while reconstructing the events that called it to shine with rare and piercing light. By turns nostalgic and critical, he puts readers on the ground in the stir and the thick of the action. Relying on daily news reports from around the country and recently declassified government papers, Shirley sheds light on the crucial diplomatic exchanges leading up to the attack, the policies on internment of Japanese living in the U.S. after the assault, and the near-total overhaul of the U.S. economy for war.Shirley paints a compelling portrait of pre-war American culture: the fashion, the celebrities, the pastimes. And his portrait of America at war is just as vivid: heroism, self-sacrifice, mass military enlistments, national unity and resolve, and the prodigious talents of Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley aimed at the Axis Powers, as well as the more troubling price-controls and rationing, federal economic takeover, and censorship. Featuring colorful personalities such as Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull, and General Douglas MacArthur, December 1941 highlights a period of profound change in American government, foreign and domestic policy, law, economics, and business, chronicling the developments day by day through that singular and momentous month.December 1941 features surprising revelations, amusing anecdotes, and heart-wrenching stories, and also explores the unique religious and spiritual dimension of a culture under assault on the eve of Christmas. Before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the closest thing to war for the Americans was uncoordinated, mediocre war games in South Carolina. Less than thirty days later, by the end of December 1941, the nation was involved in a pitched battle for the preservation of its very way of life, a battle that would forever change the nation and the world.

Glimpsing Into The Kingdom
$11.99Add to cart“Friend, your sins are forgiven.” That is what Jesus said. And that is good news indeed. Now what?
This is the question that confronts all of us who come to faith in Christ. Just as the demon-possessed man was left with a gnawing sense of unknowing, we are left with that same feeling. We know that what we were is not what we are to be. And we know that the process of becoming is a great metamorphosis.
To understand the glimpses of truth in the kingdom teachings is to peer down the road a ways into a great adventure with God.
In this new kingdom we have entered, the king himself calls us friend and tells us something brand new about us: our sins are forgiven. Whereas before our identities have been forged by brokenness, deception, shame, and hurt, our new identities are something else altogether. We are kingdom citizens, intent on being about the business of the kingdom. -

Peace : A Crittenden County Christmas Novella
$15.99Add to cartBeth Miller has a secret. Ever since she met Englischer Chris Ellis while helping out at the Yellow Bird Inn, she can’t stop thinking about him. She knows nothing could ever come of a relationship, of course-Chris had revealed he was working undercover in Crittenden County with his job as a DEA agent. That meant he faced danger daily, carried a gun, and was completely unsuitable for an Amish woman like herself.
But she knew he felt the attraction, too. It was the reason he had left so suddenly, telling her he’d never see her again. Nothing good could ever come from a romance between the two of them.
Then, three days before Christmas, as Beth is once again filling in at the Yellow Bird Inn, Chris shows up on the doorstop, bleeding. And as Beth cares for him, it’s clear that a relationship between the two of them is inevitable. But are they ready to sacrifice everything for this chance at love?

Sound Doctrine : Teaching That Leads To True Fear Of The Lord
$17.98Add to cartAccording to the Bible, sound doctrine creates true fear of the Lord. If this fear of the Lord is missing in our churches, as it seems to be, it must be a sign that we do not preach the true Word of God and sound doctrine. Teaching sound doctrine should cause us to see a need to surrender everything to God and to live in the light. There is no darkness, no sin, when we are walking in the light ( 1 John 1:7). True godliness and holiness is required to walk with God. In this prophetic word to the Church, Torben brings us back to the Bible where sound doctrine is found, including how to address sin in the church and in the individual. Has the church been teaching sound doctrine? Has it become soft on sin? Can the church expect its prayers to be answered if there is sin in the camp? Is the church accursed because it has allowed sin to thrive unchallenged? Can a person truly be born again and continue in conscious sin? Have we been teaching a grace that tramples the blood of Jesus? These are serious questions that must be addressed if we expect God to hear our prayers. His word to the church: REPENT!

Inspired : The Holy Spirit And The Mind Of Faith
$28.99Add to cartEarly Jews and Christians understood the Holy Spirit in a very different way than most Christians understand it today. They understood the spirit of God as something given to all flesh as part of creation — a spirit no less divine or holy than the spirit one might receive through charismatic endowments.
In this book John Levison works to recover that early conception of the Holy Spirit and to embrace the belief that the power of God’s spirit pulses in every breath we take. Levison sums up historical and biblical arguments and discusses implications for the church today. “The gift of the spirit is not a moment’s work,” Levison says. “The gift of the spirit is steady and continuous — something worth knowing in the struggles that have the potential to shatter life into meaningless shards.”

Justification Reconsidered : Rethinking A Pauline Theme
$18.99Add to cartLively, accessible introduction to recent scholarly debates about justification
Much has been written of late about what the apostle Paul really meant when he spoke of justification by faith, not the works of the law. This short study by Stephen Westerholm carefully examines proposals on the subject by Krister Stendahl, E. P. Sanders, Heikki Raisanen, N. T. Wright, James D. G. Dunn, and Douglas A. Campbell. In doing so, Westerholm notes weaknesses in traditional understandings that have provoked the more recent proposals, but he also points out areas in which the latter fail to do justice to the apostle.
Readers of this book will gain not only a better grasp of the ongoing theological debate about justification but also a more nuanced overall understanding of Paul.

Calvin Vs Wesley
$20.99Add to cartThe theology “de jour” orginates with John Calvin, with an emphasis on “the elect” and “sovereign will of God.” So much Calvinism saturates our air that Christians may not know there is another way of thinking about their faith, one well represented by Wesley. But no matter what people think, many act in ways that promise to change the world by offering grace and hope but also food and shelter to hurting people. In other words, they might believe like Calvinists but they are live like Wesleyans. So it behooves us to learn more about Wesley. This book is not intended to put down Calvin but to point to significant difference between Calvin and Wesley. Each wrote about major tenets of the church: who God is and what God’s will is for us; the place of Scripture; the atonement of Christ; the role of human responsibility; the work of God’s grace, the relation of the church and world; and how these beliefs can connect to how people practice their faith. But Calvin and Wesley were different and following their prescriptions will lead us down different paths.

The doctrine of Christ is a field of broad ecumenical convergence, inviting theologians from all denominational settings to fruitful collaborative exploration. In the contemporary setting, it is especially crucial for theologians to investigate the scriptural witness afresh, to retrieve classical criteria and categories from the tradition, and to consider the generative pressure of soteriology for Christology proper. The first annual Los Angeles Theology Conference sought to make a positive contribution to contemporary dogmatics in intentional engagement with the Christian tradition. Christology, Ancient and Modern brings together conference proceedings, surveying the field and articulating the sources, norms, and criteria for constructive theological work in Christology.

What Is The Meaning Of Sex
$25.00Add to cartSex is a big deal. And in our postmodern, post-Christian culture, Christians are feeling the pressure to ditch their traditional beliefs and conform to society’s evolving views on sexuality and gender. Jesus Greater Than Religion
$19.99Add to cartAbandon dead, dry, rule-keeping and embrace the promise of being truly known and deeply loved.
Jefferson Bethke burst into the cultural conversation in 2012 with a passionate, provocative poem titled “Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus.” The 4-minute video literally became an overnight sensation, with 7 million YouTube views in its first 48 hours (and 23+ million in a year). The message blew up on social-media, triggering an avalanche of responses running the gamut from encouraged to enraged.
In Jesus > Religion, Bethke unpacks similar contrasts that he drew in the poem-highlighting the difference between teeth gritting and grace, law and love, performance and peace, despair and hope. With refreshing candor he delves into the motivation behind his message, beginning with the unvarnished tale of his own plunge from the pinnacle of a works-based, fake-smile existence that sapped his strength and led him down a path of destructive behavior.
Bethke is quick to acknowledge that he’s not a pastor or theologian, but simply a regular, twenty-something who cried out for a life greater than the one for which he had settled. Along his journey, Bethke discovered the real Jesus, who beckoned him beyond the props of false religion.

Christian Philosophy : A Systematic And Narrative Introduction
$30.00Add to cartWith good reason, many Christians tend to view philosophy with strong skepticism. But the discipline is still necessary and understanding it historically and how it function practically remain necessary. The apostle Paul admonished Christians in Rome to be “transformed” by the renewal of their minds, and as Christians in contemporary society we understand this as a change in ‘worldview’.
Whether we like the term ‘worldview’ or even philosophy itself, the truth is whenever we contemplate the world around us-not matter how complex or basic of a level we do this at-we are in fact philosophizing. How can this be done in a Christian way? In Christian Philosophy: A Systematic and Narrative Introduction Craig Bartholomew and Michael Goheen present a historical and narrative introduction to philosophy while also teaching the reader to formulate a philosophy based on the Christian intellectual tradition and the Bible itself.
Examining the nature of ‘worldview’ through the lenses of historic philosophical expression, Bartholomew and Goheen unpack how we develop our perspectives (realized and assumed), how those views change overtime, and then refer readers to what they believe is the most promising philosophical basis for a Christian worldview in the contemporary world.

Life pulls us in many directions, sometimes even to the point of pulling our souls apart. We know rest and reflection are necessary for a healthy life-even Jesus took time to get away from the crowds, away from the demands of everyday life, to pray, to spend time with close friends, to sleep. But when Carolyn Weber-emotionally and physically exhausted from managing her career as a college professor, writing her first book and parenting three children under the age of three-hears this truth from a friend, all she can think is: but who will do everything if I don’t? And this sets her on a journey to find the still, small space in each day. In these pages Carolyn reflects on the eternal beauty that lurks within the present. Drawing from literature, history and everyday life, Holy Is the Day is a collection of spiritual reflections that trace the way God’s ever-renewing grace is a gift of the present. Opening it we find poignant stories of endurance, humility, compassion, remembrance and gratitude, as well a harrowing account of near-death experience. Carolyn gives us new eyes to receive the precious gift of the present and give it away to others. -

When Christ calls people, he invites them on a journey-a journey taken together in community. We have reached a point in history, however, when we think of the church as a fixed place where isolated individuals show up, consume a Christian message, drink some coffee, and get on with their lives. The times demand, and the gospel proclaims, that we recover our identity as a church that is a people on a quest for the kingdom of heaven, formed intimately by a loving God and called onto a long journey for the sake of our neighbors and our world. In The Missional Quest you’ll learn how to take your church on a long run, and how to sustain yourselves and one another along the way, through the power of God for the sake of the world. -

It’s an Either-Or world. We find ourselves caught between competing factions, secular or religious, conservative or liberal. We are pulled between extremes on one side or the other. But the Christian faith holds together seemingly contradictory ideas: Jesus is both human and divine; God is both three and one. There is a paradoxical power in the Both-And. Rich Nathan and Insoo Kim show how Christians can live out the fullness of the gospel through the Both-And. They affirm that we believe in both proclamation and demonstration of the gospel, justice and mercy, and unity and diversity as one body with many parts. The answer is not to choose one or the other, but to hold both together for a richer, more holistic experience of Christianity. Then we will live into the realities of the kingdom of God, both now and not yet, on earth as it is in heaven. The Both-And Christian is both timeless and timely, hewing to the orthodoxy of traditional belief while always contextualizing our witness in a rapidly changing world. Discover how you can deepen your discipleship with the larger vision of the Both-And. -

Ox Herder And The Good Shepherd
$18.99Add to cartA thoughtful, fascinating take on spiritual truth
In the twelfth century, the Chinese Zen master Kakuan Shien produced the pictures, poems, and commentaries we know as the Ten Ox-Herding Pictures. They were taken to Japan and became the standard version of these icons, tracing a universally recognizable path of contemplative spirituality.
Addison Hodges Hart argues that there is a similar spiritual vision between the Ten Ox-Herding Pictures and the teachings of Christ. Authentic spiritual life must begin with an inner transformation of one’s self, leading to an outward life that is natural and loving. In The Ox-Herder and the Good Shepherd Hart shares the fruit of his years of reflection on the simple, beautiful, humble, humorous, and joyful Ten Ox-Herding Pictures, presenting as they do a perennial parable through art.

Prodigal : A Ragamuffin Story
$17.99Add to cartJack Chisholm is on top of his game: lead pastor of a big church in a big city, thousands of members, a huge physical plant. His books sell millions of copies, and he is a public figure, sharing his life’s philosophy: ‘We have got to do better.’ He is also living a lie—nobody could be as holy as his congregants think he is, and like all of us, he has his share of faults, flaws, sins. When one of these comes to light, the board of deacons gives him a choice: walk away or be publicly shamed. They wouldn’t dare, he thinks. I mean too much to this church. So he laughs at them and refuses to even acknowledge what he has done. And they fire him, publicly, messily. Jack loses everything overnight: his church, his friends, his money, his reputation, and his family. His wife, Tracy, humiliated and disgusted with Jack’s recklessness and unwillingness to take responsibility, takes the church’s buy-out and their daughter Alison and goes into hiding. Jack has been a pastor his entire adult life. His only marketable skill—proclaiming the Word of the Lord—is now valueless. How to live? What to do? Take a minimum wage job? Give up? Kill himself? He falls into a bottle and hopes it all will blow over. At last, out of money, out of hope, the impossible happens. His father arrives to rescue him with these simple words: Come home. Thus begins Jack’s journey back . . . back to himself, back to hope, back to his Father.

Confident Peace : Letting Revelation Change The Way You Live
$17.99Add to cartA Confident Peace shows the book of Revelation as more than prophetic timelines or tales with apocalyptic images. It inspires full surrender to Christ and living with confident peace even when life falls apart. When hurt by the sins of others, when persecuted by ungodly governments, when impacted by the death and disease of a fallen world, when frustrated by friends and family who repeatedly turn from God instead of to Him, Revelation helps us walk these unwanted roads with confident peace. A Confident Peace also reminds us the more things change the more they stay the same. God s holiness, Satan s deception, and humanity s sinfulness are constants from age to age. Looking into the future, Revelation gives us a confident peace to recognize Satan s deceptions, overcome our sinful inclinations and honor God with our lives today. Furthermore, A Confident Peace gives us God s big picture. It reminds us the One who started it all wins it all. With over 550 Old Testament references, the book of Revelation ties together God s activity throughout scripture. Seeing the thread of God s hand tightly woven in our past and future gives us confident peace, especially when it feels life is unraveling all around us.

Raising up men has never been easy, but today is seems particularly tough. The young and old need heroes to embody the eternal qualities of manhood: honor, duty, valor, and integrity. InThe Book of Man, William J. Bennett points the way, offering a positive, encouraging, uplifting, realizable idea of manhood, redolent of history and human nature, and practical for contemporary life.
Using profiles, stories, letters, poems, essays, historical vignettes, and myths to bring his subject to life, The Book of Man defines what a man should be, how he should live, and to what he should aspire in several key areas of life: war, work, leisure, and more. “Whether we take up the sword, the plow, the ball, the gavel, our children, or our Bibles,” says Bennett, “we must always do it like the men we are called to be.”The Book of Man shows how.

Two years later, Maryanne writes to her in desperate need of help. Determined to save her sister the way she could not before, Verity hires private investigator Jonathan Hayes. Together, they embark on a search for Maryanne. It quickly becomes apparent that there is much more afoot than Maryanne’s letter said. Environmental Missions : Planting Churches And Trees
$24.99Add to cartEnvironmental Missions defines an emerging category in missions, one that takes seriously
both the mandate to evangelize the world and the responsibility of caring for God’s good earth.Lowell Bliss was a traditional church planting missionary in India when his best Hindu friend there died of malaria. This was just one of the events that led him to reexamine the politically charged term “environment,” understanding it now as simply “that which surrounds those we love, those for whom Jesus died.” In other words, the church is called to reach not only vulnerable people but the space in which they live and breathe.
Pointing to the narrative of Scripture and the history of missions, Bliss shows us that the gospel of Jesus Christ is good news for the whole creation, that we must unite two traditionally separate endeavors to fulfill the entirety of God’s commission, and that the challenge of the environmental crises of our day is also one of our greatest opportunities to reach the least reached with the love of Christ.

A lot of churches and youth ministries have given up on the idea of small groups, writing them off as too tedious, too difficult to manage, too hard to find volunteers for, too expensive to provide materials or curriculum for, or any other number of reasons. In A Volunteer Youth Worker’s Guide to Leading a Small Group, Mark Oestreicher argues a different perspec- tive, however. Marko insists that small groups pro- mote safe spaces to grow, consistency in teenagers’ emotionally tumultuous lives, and repetition that instills in them the importance of trust and tradi- tion. The Guide to Leading a Small Group is perfect for anyone feeling disenchanted with the concept of small groups, and after Marko succeeds in changing your mind in the first few pages, he’ll use the rest of the book to help you restructure and rethink your small-group programming so you don’t get burned out again. Marko is leading the charge in reviving small groups, and you can join him today. -
Volunteer Youth Workers Guide To Resourcing Parents
$7.99Add to cartEvery youth leader, volunteer, or pastor has failed at some point in their communication or interaction with their teenagers’ parents. Most youth workers are still pretty young themselves, and most parents are guarded and pro- tective of their kids. These factors combine to create a minefield, of sorts, for parents and youth workers to navigate. In fact, youth ministry mogul Mark Oestreicher starts off A Volunteer Youth Worker’s Guide to Resourcing Parents by admitting some of his own failures in his interactions with students’ parents. But then Marko uses the rest of the book to explore the importance and deep significance of being intentional with parent contact and interaction, and not letting family ministry slip through the cracks in favor of teenager-only ministry. If you’ve had some discouraging interactions with parents lately, this book might help provide a new perspective, allowing you to show some grace, both to yourself and the parents you’re trying to minister to.

Volunteer Youth Workers Guide To Understanding Todays Teenagers
$7.99Add to cartMany parents have taken a defeatist approach toward understanding their teens. But that’s where you, the volunteer youth worker, come in. Mark Oestreicher shows that Understand- ing Today’s Teenager is both possible and rewarding, if one has the right tools. Marko explores the dimensions of nature vs. nurture, brain activity, culture, biology, and emotional development, all of which lead teenagers to do the wacky things they do that adults don’t understand and often can’t remember having done themselves. Marko also reminds us that adolescent development doesn’t end at the age of 18 just because United States law says it does. A Volunteer Youth Worker’s Guide to Understanding To- day’s Teenager uses a combination of science, logic, and compassion to help bring us back from the cliff edge and remember why we started working with teens in the first place. Use this book is a jumping- off point to re-ignite your passion for teens.
