Ordering Of Love
$21.00Add to cart“In a brilliant marriage of myth and manner, histories sacred and profane, prayers of petition and of praise, these poems both articulate and illumine the trouble in the gap in which we live-the gap between human affections and Divine Love. L’Engle is unfailing in her willingness to see through-not around-human suffering, and in so doing announces no final severing of spirit and flesh but an enduring vision of resurrection in that crux, in the cross, in the One in Whom all things meet, continuing.”
-Scott Cairns, author of Slow Pilgrim and Philokalia: New and Selected Poems“I love L’Engle’s poetry for the way it incarnates not only the great Truths of the faith, but all the little truths of our ordinary existence-our working and playing and loving and fighting and dreaming and idling and all the rest of it-and for the way it shows us that those big and little truths should not, cannot, be separated.”
-Carolyn Arends, recording artist and author“Why is L’Engle one of the defining poets of our time? Because when life hurts, she does not shrink from the wounds. She clarifies the murk with hope as we feel the lift of grace.”
-Calvin Miller, Beeson Divinity School
Birmingham, Alabama“We are, all of us, the richer for this carefully crafted and prayerfully rendered collection.”
-Phyllis Tickle, Author, The Divine Hours“Poetry, at least the kind I write, is written out of immediate need; it is written out of pain, joy, and experience too great to be borne until it is ordered into words. And then it is written to be shared.”
-Madeleine L’EngleMadeleine L’Engle’s writing has always translated the invisible and intricate qualities of love into the patterns and rhythms of visible life. Now, with compelling language and open-hearted vulnerability, The Ordering of Love brings together the exhaustive collection of L’Engle’s poetry for the first time.
This volume collects nearly 200 of L’Engle’s original poems, including eighteen that have never before been published. Reflecting on themes of love, loss, faith, and beauty, The Ordering of Love gives vivid and compelling insight into the language of the heart.

Substance Of Things Seen
$23.99Add to cartWhile the average person rarely sees it, the visual arts play a subtle yet profound role in the teaching and formation of faith, both for individuals and religious communities. The Substance of Things Seen explores the intersection of art and faith, offering thoughtful reflections on the way art functions in Christian life and practice.
Highly readable and featuring instructive illustrations, this book is meant to engage church leaders as well as artists in constructive conversation about the critical role that art can play in the renewal of Christian education, worship, and study. It also challenges anyone who thinks the arts are only of marginal importance to the religious life. Robin Jensen considers here a broad range of topics relevant to Christian faith and culture, including the construction of sacred space, the use of art in worship and spiritual formation, the way that visual art interprets sacred texts, and the power and danger of art from a historical and contemporary perspective.

Loving Jesus
$18.00Add to cartIn this biblical spirituality for today, Powells earnest plea is for Christians to revisit their faith not by blazing in religious enthusiasm but by harboring a steadier flame and deeper commitment. Living at the poetic heart of faith, he argues, entails seeing the coordinates of religious life–love, understanding, truth, hope, and especially devotion–in a new way. Powell espouses the old fashioned idea of piety. Drawing on his wide knowledge of the Bible and Christian tradition, as well as insights from his own journey, he shows how simple religious practices move us beyond the old certitudes of a naive and youthful faith into the less certain but more bracing terrain of a second naivete, a closer walk with Jesus.

Mustard Seed Of Faith
$10.99Add to cartLongfellow Press
I have known Donna Warren all of my life (which is most of hers). In the early years, I found her to be very headstrong, mean, determined, and slightly vain. She often tried to take an authoritative role with everyone, which resulted in major conflict. To put it in simple terms, I didn’t like her. You see-she’s my oldest sister. About seven years ago, quite by default, my husband and I went to Galveston, Texas, to visit Donna and her husband. We had booked flights to attend her daughter’s wedding a few weeks earlier but were unable to make the trip. With two roundtrip tickets to Texas that we had to use, I had no choice but to pay her a visit. It was during this visit that, for the first time, I MET DONNA WARREN! I found her to be very self-assured, yet humble; very stern, yet compassionate; and very opinionated, yet understanding. The woman I met is truly chosen and anointed by God, and I love her. You see, she’s my friend, mentor, confidante, and prayer partner, and since our mother went on to be with God, she’s been my mother. This book, A Mustard Seed of Faith, is Donna’s testimony. Throughout her life, she has held on to her faith to make it through the trails, tribulations, and triumphs of this world. As you read each poem and inspirational writing, and look into the heart and soul of Donna Warren, I know that you will feel God’s power, wisdom, guidance, and comfort, and will be richly blessed. When you’ve been blessed, pass it on by planting another Mustard Seed of Faith, the way Donna has. -Denese Artis -

Questions Of Faith For Inquiring Believers
$12.95Add to cartHow do we reconcile basic Christian theology with modern life? In today’s church, more people are apt to come to church spiritually hungry, but theologically uninformed. And, Robert Cueni notes, many are no longer content with being told, “Memorize this list of what Christians believe. There will be a test.” This book addresses these concerns by posing broad philosophical questions and then presenting open-ended and non-technical introductions to many core Christian ideas such as atonement, ecclesiology, and prayer. It’s an excellent resource for new member classes, adult Sunday school curriculum, a sermon series, or for personal investigation into understanding the Bible and the faith.
Among the provocative questions Cueni explores are:
* Why Do Good People Do Bad Things?
* How Do We Live With Our Differences?
* What’s Important About Going To Church?
* Must Religion And Science Conflict?
* If Christ Is The Answer, What Is The Question? -

Genetic Turning Points A Print On Demand Title
$38.99Add to cart360 Pages
Additional Info
Human genetic intervention could be considered a microcosm of the larger field of bioethics. According to James Peterson, “it raises almost all the basic issues addressed in a standard bioethics course, from informed consent to the goals of medicine.” Peterson argues that it is imperative to view human genetic intervention from an ethical framework, particularly as the technology in that intervention advances at an exponential rate.Peterson’s goal in Genetic Turning Points was to tie together some of the various questions related to human genetic intervention (better known, perhaps, as genetic manipulation or genetic engineering). He begins with a look at medical technology and moves on to major issues including genetic research, genetic testing, genetic drugs, and genetic surgery (physical manipulation of human genes in the body). The issues are raised in a progressive approach. Genetic research is the foundation for genetic testing and genetic drugs, thus issues related to genetic research are looked at first, and then issues related to genetic testing and drugs. Since genetic surgery techniques are still being perfected, and are not as available as the other technologies, Peterson looks at this vital issue last.
Christians, according to LeRoy Waters, have tended to view human genetics from one of two positions (not usually both): cosmic theology and casuistic analysis. Cosmic theology simply means looking at the grand scheme of God’s plan for humanity; casuistic analysis is that which addresses the questions of practice. Peterson hopes to bring the two positions together in a cogent and effective manner. He feels that one’s understanding of God’s plan for humanity (our purpose) shapes the concrete decisions of life (the practice). Ideally, Christians should be aware of both how purpose shapes practice and how practice questions purpose. Thus, Peterson sees the medical and ethical issues as eminently practical, but defined and shaped by one’s metaphysical beliefs.
Genetic Turning Points is laid out in a progressive manner, but topics can stand on their own. Chapters are generally short and the indexes and cross-references allow one to find a particular topic quickly and easily. Since there are fifteen chapters, the book easily lends itself to undergraduate or postgraduate study (one chapter a week), but is not solely for students. It is also for professionals (doctors, clergy, etc.) and for educated lay people. Its information is timely and it

Why I Believe In A Personal God
$14.99Add to cart“My own investigations over a period of many years have given me a quiet assurance that there is a God who has given us sufficient clues in life, nature, human thought, beauty and art to satisfy the genuine inquirer that he exists, and that he has expressed himself most meaningfully in Jesus Christ. However, you may come to a different conclusion at the end of this book and that is your right as a thinking responsible person. All I can do is to invite you to join me in looking at the arguments again…”

Reason To Believe
$25.95Add to cartIn this book noted Oxford theologian Wiles (What is Theology?) provides a clear and accessible introduction to Christian belief. Rather than simply stating and explaining the doctrinal tenets of Christian faith, however, Wiles sets forth what seem to him appropriate responses to basic questions about Christian belief that perplex Chrsitian and non-Christions alike. Instead of providing a technical overview of Christian doctrine, he offers a short section with each chapter-printed in bold type-that discuss some of the issues that are important for reasonably assissing the truth claims of Christianity. Wiles’ free-flowing argument is not broken up with footnotes, although a bibliography at the end of the book provides suggestions for further reading for anyone interested in pursuing in more detail any of the book’s topics. An index of biblical references is also included.

Gods Plan For Man
$47.00Add to cartGOD’S PLAN FOR MAN
Throughout nearly sixty years of ministry, Finis Jennings Dake passionately pursued the literal truth of Scripture. God’s Plan for Man contains the very heart of his life’s work.
Originally designed as a correspondence course, God’s Plan for Man is equivalent to a three-year Bible college program. As such, it is highly interactive, intended for serious study.
In this comprehensive volume, Dake unfolds the plans and purposes of God from the eternal past to the eternal future, exploring the details of biblical prophecy and the privileges of life in Christ. He systematically discusses the nature of the Bible, principles of biblical interpretation, the Trinity, and much more. Yet God’s Plan for Man isn’t filled with a lot of dry information appealing only to the intellect. Rather, Dake writes with a pastor’s heart. His aim is to encourage faith. The result is a balanced diet that satisfies both heart and mind.

Believing Heart : An Invitation To Story Theology
$34.00Add to cartC. S. Song here invites Christians to see the whole Christian panoply through a story-centered lens. Focusing on Life, Hope, Faith, and Love, Song delves into each theme or locus (1) as it can be approached in people’s experiences or stories, (2) as it appears in related stories from other religious traditions, (3) how its central import can be expressed theologically, and (4) how it can appear in practice. Thus story becomes theology, then theology becomes story. “Central to these stories,” says Song, “is the heart that believes in spite of hardships and despair, the heart that struggles to make sense of what seems senseless in life and history.” Song’s strong narratives and engaging style will make this volume appealing in a variety of settings, especially for introductory students, clergy in search of homiletic material, church groups, and Christians open to insights from non-Western cultures.

Listening With My Heart
$15.00Add to cartHeather Whitestone. Her name has become synonymous with incredible determination and unprecedented achievement. In Listening with My Heart, Heather tells her own story and the stories of others who have inspired her, proving that with hard work, perseverance, and faith, each of us can move mountains. Profoundly deaf since she was eighteen months old, Heather strove to live a normal life, and refused to listen to the voices of discouragement that many of us so often hear, no matter what problems confront us. She wouldn’t listen to the doctor who said she wouldn’t develop beyond third-grade abilities, or to those who said she would never dance ballet, or even speak. She did, however, hear the encouraging spirit of her family and followed the guidance of her own heart’s dreams. Struggling through her difficulties, she was sustained by every success–no matter how small–and ultimately became Miss America 1995. Though she is disabled, her incredible gifts have inspired many throughout the world, and in Listening with My Heart she at last shares her life-changing wisdom.

When Faith Is Not Enough A Print On Demand Title
$23.99Add to cartHow can we believe in God and develop a healthy sense of self and of our enduring value in a world so often troubling, uncertain, and dark? When Faith Is Not Enough is a creative, honest discussion of doubt and the search for meaning that avoids pat answers while offering – to readers from all walks of life – positive reasons for persisting in the quest for faith.
The first section of the book, “The Shadow of a Doubt,” takes the reality of doubt (and doubters) seriously. Clark helps readers to understand faith in a deeper way, presents a powerful case for the existence of God, offers hope for understanding the problem of God and human suffering, suggests positive ways for dealing with doubt, and affirms the excitement of embracing the adventure of life.
The second section of the book, “Searching for a Self,” is a reflection on the meaning of life. Here Clark examines our most profound attempts to find meaning, happiness, and wholeness and shows why they lead to despair, sadness, and brokenness. Revisiting important themes in the writings of Kierkegaard and others, Clark explores the attempt to create a self of abiding value and shows that it is only through faith in God that our true selves are found and our deepest desires satisfied.

Intellectuals Don’t Need God is for people who are not convinced by the arguments of classical, rationalistic apologetics, for people who feel that Christianity must have a broader appeal that to reason alone if it is to be persuasive to non-Christians. Alister McGrath shows convincingly that reason is only one of many possible points of contact between the non-Christian and the gospel. In today’s world, nonrational concerns — such as a sense that life lacks focus, an unconscious fear of death, a deep sense of longing for something unknown we don’t have but know we need — are much more effective points of contact for apologetics. In this book, Dr. McGrath (who is both a theologian and a scientist with a Ph.D. in microbiology) combines the clarity of a brilliant scientific mind with a deep commitment to Christ and to reaching non-Christians. Intellectuals Don’t Need God is for anyone who has questions about the validity of Christianity as well as for students, pastors, and lay leaders. Anyone who works with students and young people especially needs to read this book. As McGrath says, “apologetics is not about winning arguments — it is about bringing people to Christ.” -
