Before You Go
$15.99Add to cartA crisis of faith isn’t always what it seems.
To alleviate a crisis, you have to get to its source, not just treat the symptoms. Many say they are leaving the faith as the result of conscious intellectual doubts or relational hurts. But often, what’s driving the doubt is just outside of one’s conscious awareness. Unbeknownst to those struggling and those trying to help them these unconscious factors can be the actual source from which their doubt springs.
Before You Go is a diagnostic tool for addressing doubts. Rather than rehash surface-level apologetic answers, Marriott and Wicks dig deeper into overlooked factors that frequently are the real culprits when it comes to faith crisis, namely the unconscious aspects of our experience. Find real hope for those struggling to maintain their faith and genuine help for those trying to prevent faith loss in those they love.

Leaving Faith Behind
$14.99Add to cartLeaving Faith Behind gives voice to women and men who were born into Muslim families and communities, but who have made the decision to leave Islam or to dissent against some of the most significant aspects of Islamic doctrine.
Aliyah, who realized as a young woman that she did not have to live by rigid rules and concepts that suffocated her true self.
Hassan, who became a practicing Muslim in his teens, but for whom doubts led him to leave the faith in his fifties.
Jimmy, banished from his home and family when he was discovered to be gay.
Marwa, who keeps secret from her community the fact that she can no longer practice a religion that she believes degrades and denies basic rights to women.
Aisha, for whom the journey from belief to disbelief was a gradual process involving personal challenge and confrontations with friends and family.
As increasing numbers of people in Western society choose to turn away from organized religion, this book allows the stories of some of them to be heard: the reasons for their decisions to leave, the challenges of leaving, and the effects on their lives and relationships. It also captures portraits of life and culture within Muslim communities in our fast-changing world, and how they are reacting and responding to migration, secularization, more inclusive attitudes to gender and sexuality, and other trends of modern society.

How The Nations Rage
$18.99Add to cartHow can we move forward amid such political strife and cultural contention?
We live in a time of division. It shows up not just between political parties and ethnic groups and churches but also inside of them. As Christians, we’ve felt pushed to the outskirts of national public life, yet even then we are divided about how to respond. Some want to strengthen the evangelical voting bloc. Others focus on social-justice causes, and still others would abandon the public square altogether. What do we do when brothers and sisters in Christ sit next to each other in the pews but feel divided and angry? Is there a way forward?
In How the Nations Rage, political theology scholar and pastor Jonathan Leeman challenges Christians from across the spectrum to hit the restart button. First, we shift our focus from redeeming the nation to living as a redeemed nation. Second, we take the lessons learned inside the church into our public engagement outside of it by loving our neighbors and seeking justice. When we identify with Christ more than a political party or social grouping, we avoid the false allure of building heaven on earth and return to the church’s unchanging political task: to represent a heavenly and future kingdom now. It’s only when we realize that the life of our churches now is the hope of the nation for tomorrow that we become the salt and light Jesus calls us to be.

Irresistible Faith : Becoming The Kind Of Christian The World Cant Resist
$19.99Add to cartFrom an influential pastor and author–whose writing Ann Voskamp calls “sharp, informed, [and] culturally savvy”–comes a revelatory blueprint for an utterly transformative and enticing Christianity.
Jesus said his followers would be a light to the world and a city on a hill. He envisioned a wildly diverse yet compellingly unified multitude of strangers that would penetrate the world with love. They would be a counter-culture, in a way that was for the culture not against it. They would lead the world in acts of love and justice and be the most life-giving bosses, employees, neighbors, and friends. They would also be the best enemies, returning insults with kindness and persecution with prayers. They would stay true to their biblical convictions and–not in spite of those convictions but because of them–would love, listen to, and serve those who don’t share their convictions. Over time their movement–Jesus’ movement–would become irresistible to people from every nation, tribe, and tongue.
This is not how many, perhaps most, today see Christianity. And justifiably so, given that many bearing the name Christian use the Bible to justify behavior that Jesus would never endorse and would always condemn, that would in fact make Jesus furious. But Jesus’s vision for the church is possible, and Irresistible Faith provides a blueprint for Christians to pursue it as redeemed individuals, as a renewed community, and as those working for a restored world. This is a way of being that gives a tired, cynical world a reason to pause and consider Christianity . . . and to start wishing it was true.

Hope In The Dark
$19.99Add to cart“I want to believe, I want to have hope, but…” Pastor and bestselling author Craig Groeschel hears these words often and has asked them himself. We want to know God, feel his presence, and trust that he hears our prayers, but in the midst of great pain, we may wonder if he really cares about us. Even when we have both hope and hurt, sometimes it’s the hurt that shouts the loudest. Can God be good when life is not?
In Hope in the Dark, Groeschel explores the story of the father who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus, saying, “I believe! Help my unbelief!” In the man’s sincere plea, Jesus heard the tension in the man’s battle-scarred heart. He healed not only the boy but the father too, driving out the hopelessness that had overtaken him. He can do the same for us today.
As Groeschel shares his pain surrounding the current health challenges of his daughter, he acknowledges the questions we may ask in our own deepest pain: “Where was God when I was being abused?” “Why was my child born with a disability?” “Why did the cancer come back?” “Why are all my friends married and I’m alone?” He invites us to wrestle with such questions as we ask God to honor our faith and heal our unbelief.
In the middle of your profound pain, you long for authentic words of understanding and hope. You long to know that even in overwhelming reality, you can still believe that God is good. Rediscover a faith in the character, power, and presence of God. Even in the questions. Even now.

Faith For This Moment (Reprinted)
$17.00Add to cartFor three generations, God’s chosen people were exiles in the land of Babylon. Today, many Christians in America feel like exiles within their own country, and there is growing disagreement regarding how to live faithfully in this complex cultural moment. Some desire to conquer our Babylon and return to a type of Christendom they believe existed in an idealized past. Others seek to assimilate the values of our culture into the church. And in between are those who are uncomfortable with either extreme, who feel spiritually homeless. These exiles are looking for a new way of understanding what faith looks like in a polarized, pluralistic, post-Christian culture. They want to know: What does it mean to be the people of God now?
That’s the question Rick McKinley seeks to answer. He shows exiled Christians how people of faith from other times and places discovered how to live faithfully, prophetically, and imaginatively, neither compromising their principles nor their compassion, and never giving in to despair.

Learning To Speak God From Scratch
$20.00Add to cartIn a rapidly changing culture, many of us struggle to talk about faith. We can no longer assume our friends understand words such as grace or gospel. Others, like lost and sin, have become so negative they are nearly conversation-enders.
Jonathan Merritt knows this frustration well. After moving from the Bible Belt to New York City, he discovered that the sacred terms he used to describe his spiritual life didn’t connect as they had in the past. This launched him into an exploration of an increasing American reluctance to talk about faith-and the data he uncovered revealed a quiet crisis of affecting millions.
In this groundbreaking book, Jonathan revives ancient expressions through incisive cultural commentary, vulnerable personal narratives, and surprising biblical insights. Both provocative and liberating, Learning to Speak God from Scratch will breathe new life into your spiritual conversations and invite you into the embrace of the God who inhabits them.

Cancer Girl wraps herself in a cape of grace, freely sharing her experiences of diagnosis, traversing the medical system, finding faith in God again, and learning to live with cancer. Cancer Girl learns that there is no stronger “magic word” than “Trust God.” Part journal, part sage advice, Fitch Courie weaves her experience as a nurse throughout her story. Using her real-time blog posts during the course of diagnosis, treatment, and living with the disease, Fitch Courie covers the cycle of grief and relearning a new norm, offering assurance to others that they are not alone. Readers are encouraged to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences with their illness in order to contribute to overall healing. -
Landscape Of Faith
$23.99Add to cartTaking a nondenominational approach similar to the “mere Christianity” advocated by C. S. Lewis, Alister McGrath uses the creeds as framework with which to explore the teachings of the Christian doctrines and what it means to live a life of faith.
In this new book, he tells of his discovery of Christianity while a student at Oxford University and takes readers on a panoramic tour of the landscape of the Christian faith. Using the story of his own crisis of faith, he looks at why Christians believe what they do, how we can best understand these ideas, and the difference they make to the way we think about ourselves and our world so that readers can find their own map to navigate the landscape of faith.

Reasoning From Faith
$35.00Add to cartIndiana University Press
Merold Westphal is considered to be one of the preeminent Continental philosophers of religion. His articulation of faith as the task of a lifetime has become a touchstone in contemporary debates concerning faith’s relationship to reason. As Justin Sands explores his philosophy, he illuminates how Westphal’s concept of faith reveals the pastoral, theological intent behind his thinking. Sands sees Westphal’s philosophy as a powerful articulation of Protestant theology, but one that is in ecumenical dialogue with questions concerning apologetics and faith’s relationship to ethics and responsibility, a more Catholic point of view. By bringing out these features in Westphal’s philosophy, Sands intends to find core philosophical methodologies as well as a passable bridge for philosophers to cross over into theological discourses.

Faith On A Sticky Note
$10.23Add to cartDo you ever doubt your faith in God because you never had that one defining “salvation moment” that other Christians talk about – you know the one where you drop to your knees, plead to be saved, then receive a feeling, vision, or some other heavenly sign of confirmation? This is exactly how author Mark McKinney felt, until he faced the daunting task of going public with his Christian testimony. Enter: the sticky note.
Over the last several decades, the sticky note has become a hallmark of modern life. Reminders, schedules, even love notes have been relegated to these small paper squares, which we tack onto the computer monitor, the refrigerator, or the dashboard. Little do we know that in posting them, we leave veritable paper trails – mini-documentaries of what we do, what is important to us, and what defines us as people.
In Faith on a Sticky Note, McKinney uses this idea to relay how he discovered his faith, tracking down the “spiritual sticky notes” of his life, then piecing them together like a puzzle. “I never had my moment…” he writes. “I had many moments.”
Through the heartwarming, personal accounts of his father’s battle with alchoholism and eventual death, McKinney reminds us that faith, like life, in not made in a single defining moment, but rather in everyday situations attuned to God’s perfect timing.

Nexus : Understanding Faith And Modern Culture
$29.95Add to cartThe Nexus,” so-named because of the operational intersection or “Nexus” of faith and culture, is an alphabetized manual of cultural artifacts of significance to Christians.
In “The Nexus,” Jon Widener observes how Christianity has lost many battles over the years and how the evangelical community has been fraught with endemic anti-intellectualism. He sees an evangelical insularity taking the form of retreat and retrenchment from the comings and goings of the larger society.
Dr. Widener proposes that modern Christian believers correct these deficits by exercising the exhortation of I Pet 3:15 (KJV) to always be prepared “to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you.” Believers should educate themselves on culturally relevant issues where there are questions of Christian morality. This is the burden and purpose of the book. Accordingly, the standard for inclusion is straight-forward. If the topic is culturally encountered and has moral implications, then it meets the threshold standard for inclusion in the work.

Beauty And The Riches Of Redemption
$15.99Add to cart“The Beauty and the Riches of Redemption” presents to us the drama of humanity from the Garden of Eden – where the curtain opened and the stage was set – to the Garden of Gethsemane – where the curtain was not only drawn, but cut: End of drama. Is Jesus really the only way to God and so, the only hope of salvation? How could Jesus, born of the Jewish people, be the Savior of the whole world? How could the son of Mary, an Israelite woman be said to be the Son of God? Can Jesus really save me and guarantee me entrance/eternity in heaven? In about 180 pages, the author, with the help of the Holy Spirit answers all these questions and explains to us with clarity and simplicity what we need to know from creation to redemption. You need this book…This book clearly brings out the difference between religion and salvation. Jesus came to redeem mankind back to his Creator. Man through sin was cut off from God, but now there is no “salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved…”

Taking Pascals Wager
$30.99Add to cart14 Chapters
Additional Info
Since we can’t know with absolute certainty that God exists, each of us in a sense makes a bet. If we believe in God and are right, the benefits include eternal life. If we are wrong, the downside is limited. On the other hand, we might not believe in God. If we are right, then we will have lived in line with reality. If we are wrong, however, the consequences could be eternally disastrous. This was the challenge posed by the French philosopher Blaise Pascal over three hundred years ago. But Michael Rota contends that Pascal’s argument is still compelling today. Since there is much to gain (for ourselves as well as for others) and relatively little to lose, the wise decision is to seek a relationship with God and live a Christian life. Rota considers Pascal’s wager and the roles of uncertainty, evidence and faith in making a commitment to God. By engaging with themes such as decision theory, the fine-tuning of the universe, divine hiddenness, the problem of evil, the historicity of the resurrection and the nature of miracles, he probes the many dynamics at work in embracing the Christian faith. In addition, Rota takes a turn not found in many books of philosophy. He looks at the actual effects of such a commitment in three recent, vivid, gripping examples?Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jean Vanier and Immaculee Ilibagiza. Like Pascal, Rota leaves us with a question: What wager will we make? -

Human Development And Faith (Reprinted)
$39.99Add to cartThis book, now in its second edition, brings together the best available understandings of human development from a multidisciplinary perspective. Uniquely inclusive of the moral and faith dimensions of context and life-cycle development, Human Development and Faith examines the interplay of mind, body, family, community, and soul at every stage of development. It addresses two central questions: What are the “good-enough” conditions of parenting, family, and community in each phase of life, from birth to death, that support growth and development? What gives life adequate meaning as development proceeds? If human development describes the normative and hoped-for passages of life, then faith provides the necessary component of meaning. Throughout the various perspectives offered in this volume is the premise that faith is that quality of living that makes it possible to fully live.

Faith : The Abyss We All Face
$38.99Add to cart“Why is God killing my child?”
The Russian mother asked as she looked into my eyes. I didn’t know what to say. Another mother asked, “Why does God allow innocent babies to suffer and die?”
My heart broke as I listened to these mothers sobbing.
“FAITH: The Abyss We All Face” is a true story of one man’s journey to the literal “Ends of the Earth” where time after time, he heard these and similar questions.
Dr. Bill Becknell has wrestled with the tragic cries of brokenness, pain and suffering in himself and others. They are everywhere, and they challenge our faith. There are no cliches or trite answers to these difficult questions. But despite extreme hardships, pain, brokenness, sacrifices, miracles and even near-death experiences along this road, he found an unexpected treasure… JOY!
No matter how difficult the circumstances, the pain, and the brokenness, God has an unfailing Love that is beyond comprehension.
Brokenness and sorrow are a part of living, and no one can change that. What we do about tragedy in our lives is an issue of faith. “FAITH” is written to encourage all believers not to be afraid to step out into the unknown “abyss of faith.” Non-Believers may also find the stories apply to their lives, because “faith” is something everyone has.
There is no greater JOY than following Jesus, even if He leads you to the “Ends of the Earth.”

Kierkegaards Concept Of Faith
$38.99Add to cartIn this book renowned philosopher Merold Westphal unpacks the writings of nineteenth-century thinker Soren Kierkegaard on biblical, Christian faith and its relation to reason.
Across five books – Fear and Trembling, Philosophical Fragments, Concluding Unscientific Postscript, Sickness Unto Death, and Practice in Christianity – and three pseudonyms, Kierkegaard sought to articulate a biblical concept of faith by approaching it from a variety of perspectives in relation to one another. Westphal offers a careful textual reading of these major discussions to present an overarching analysis of Kierkegaard’s conception of the true meaning of biblical faith.
Though Kierkegaard presents a complex picture of faith through his pseudonyms, Westphal argues that his perspective is a faithful and illuminating one, making claims that are important for philosophy of religion, for theology, and most of all for Christian life as it might be lived by faithful people.

Prospering In Hard Times By Applying Your Faith
$13.00Add to cartProspering in Hard Times by Applying Your Faith: Receiving the Object of Your Faith by Wallace Frazier Prospering in Hard Times by Applying Your Faith explores the truth and knowledge imparted by religion from sources beyond that of the traditional reference Bible. In this analysis of faith, Wallace W. Frazier breaks down and reviews the hierarchy of the multitude of celestial figures. He describes a revelation of Christ Jesus of Nazareth unknown-or at least unrevealed- in traditional religious or sacred books. In exploring lesser-known spiritual personalities, he de-conditions the enlightnened reader and truth seeker from the limited, primitive, and traditional concepts of faith and fills the void with a process of applying your faith that produces both spiritual and material fruit. In this philosophical breakdown of faith and its history, the author seeks to encourage, enlighten, and inspire the people–brothers and sisters of humankind–to receive the Spirit of Truth, who is Christ Jesus (since His ascension, no longer one-in-the-same with Christ Jesus of Nazareth). Furthermore, Prospering in Hard Times by Applying Your Faith exposes truths to be found and received outside the Bible and traditional religious organizations

About The AuthorAdditional Info
Faith is an inspirational and motivational word and not just a religious jargon. This book is not a religious book; even though it contains biblical principles. It contains tested principles by which anyone can succeed depending on your own definition of success. Faith is a powerful success button. It is such an amazing gift but so many people neglect out of ignorance.Faith is the compass of the soul. As the airplane cannot go far without a compass, so we are not able to effectively and successfully navigate the troubled waters of life without a well developed understanding and application of our faith-power. Faith is the lifeline of all humans; without it, fear, doubt, anxiety, unbelief, sickness and failure are the alternatives. A strong faith is an antidote against stress, fear, sickness and failure. Faith is the mother of all achievements.
You might not be able to overcome all fears; whether it is the fear of failure, death, poverty, sickness, man, criticisms, personal insecurities or any other fears, until you have mastered or become familiar with faith: your 7th Sense. With the added advantage of a vibrant faith-ability or 7th Sense you stand taller in the spirit than those who only rely on the five senses.
After reading this book you will discover the amazing power of faith. Your faith will rise to action-oriented and problem-solving levels. You will also receive a faith that potentially destroys fears, generates miracles, and changes situations. This is because faith is a developed ability and a conditioned state of mind to trust and not doubt. It is a life support and life sustainer in times of adversity. You could do more for yourself through the power of your faith than a million dollars would. You are richer than you think through faith and poorer than you can imagine without i

Faith The Link With Gods Power
$16.99Add to cartSome believe that simply having faith is an entitlement to blessing and prosperity. Others believe that faith in oneself is all that is needed in life. Still others contend that faith is a cosmic force that breeds superhuman, super-spiritual, invincible power. It is none of these.
Faith is not something requiring you to believe in what you know is not true, nor is it believing something for which there is no evidence. The Bible-a book all about faith-provides the evidence that makes faith so vital, so important, and so astounding.

Faith is the law God created by which man accesses sources and resources outside of himself. To every crisis God has programmed a solution. We simply start the process.

* Looking behind the scenes of visible miracles
* Perfecting faith at the point of greatest weakness

Rumors Of God
$18.99Add to cartRumors of God is a call to Christians seeking a vision of the life God is calling them to, one that transcends the shallowness of our culture. Most Christians today live with tension. What is promised in the Scriptures seems like a far cry from what we experience in our lives. As a result, we can lose our passion to live out our faith in the world, and the God of Scripture seems more a series of rumors of divinity than actual tangible, accessible reality. As our world grows more ungodly, it often feels as if the future of the people of God hangs in the balance. In the seventh century B.C., the prophet Habakkuk also fell prey to a spirit of discouragement, and he penned these words: “LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.” Today we live in a similar spiritual and cultural moment to that of Habakkuk, and we, too, long to renew the words and deeds of God in our time. Like Habakkuk we question the future of the church and of God’s mission in our lives. In Rumors of God, authors Darren Whitehead and Jon Tyson call us to reject what is plausible, and to cry out for God to bring what is possible in our lives and in the church.
It will resonate with Christians seeking a vision of the life God is calling them to, one that transcends the shallowness of our culture.

Disruptive Faith : Expect God To Interrupt Your Life (Reprinted)
$19.00Add to cartThe word faith is common these days, but placing one’s faith in God is a weighty action, uncommonly fraught with consequence and, by His design, inconvenience. Faith in God is reassuring and comforting only insofar as believers trust Him–and that depth of trust is the mark of a mature Christian who has allowed faith to intrude on his life and shift his gaze away from his own aims, needs, and desires. This is nothing if not a painful and disturbing process. A Disruptive Faith is A. W. Tozer’s never-before-published teaching on what he termed “faith that perturbs”–faith that contradicts the unbelieving man and threatens the complacency of the Christian. The renowned pastor and teacher insists in these pages that genuine faith breeds dissatisfaction with this life, by God’s design; it weans us from this temporary life and prepares us for the life to come. Readers will learn to be content with this faith-inspired discontent and to experience a fresh hope for eternity with God.

After Shock : Searching For Honest Faith When Your World Is Shaken
$22.99Add to cartIn the wake of a historic earthquake in the fragile country of Haiti, Kent Annan considers suffering–from the epic to the everyday–as a problem for faith.
Less than two weeks after the release of Kent’s book about his work with Haiti Partners, he heard the news.
Friends trapped under the rubble of buildings. Friends sprinting across the city looking for family. Churches–including one Kent often attended–turned to rubble. Suddenly Kent and his friends were part of an uncomfortable fellowship: people whose faith is shaken by crisis. Taking courage from the psalmists of old and the company of his grieving neighbors, Kent has found that there is solidarity in suffering. Others have followed life to the edge of meaning and have heard God even there, calling for honest faith.
Are there questions or realities your faith can’t handle?
Kent wrote After Shock to help you find out.

Faith Of Your Own
$21.00Add to cartA faith should be a living thing. What we believe necessarily evolves in response to insights into the Bible, to questions or doubts we face, to changes in life circumstances, or to things that happen in the larger world. Nevertheless, Christians often find it helpful to identify what they can most fully believe at a given moment. Such clarity empowers the present and leads us toward the future. Such moments can also be mile markers by which we measure our faith journey.
-
Faith At The Edge
$23.99Add to cartCall it existential doubt. Call it “the dark night of the soul.” However you term it, God-doubting is a spiritual phenomenon endemic to the Christian experience, suffered by saints from Mother Theresa, St. John of the Cross, and Therese of Lisieux to lesser-known Christians throughout history. In fact, there may be something of this God-doubting in nearly all of us.
Faith at the Edge is for those doubters, believers struggling with their faith within the Christian tradition, not for the skeptics and seekers who lie outside it. It is for those who experience uncertainty about faiths to which they have been committed, but who now wonder whether it’s true. This doubt is very personal and deeply disturbing, exemplified when God seems remote, when he is experientially absent, when his very existence seems uncertain, when everything one believes as a Christian is called into serious question.
Robert Wennberg here explores the important questions of existential doubt. What causes our sense of divine absence? Are we at fault, or is there some other explanation for our uncertainty? Why does God allow this to happen? How should we respond? Wennberg answers these and other provocative questions both through personal illustrations and through the wisdom and insight of such figures as Blaise Pascal, G. K. Chesterton, Simone Weil, C. S. Lewis, and Martin Marty. He lays out a credible theological account of what happens during doubt. He further helps us understand how we can cope with these dark episodes and how we can not only stand against them, but even profit from them spiritually.

Holy Restlessness : Reflections On Faith And Learning
$15.99Add to cartPaul Dovre, consummate educator and churchman, speaks knowingly of the holy restlessness that is inherent in people of faith who wrestle with God’s call even whle heeding it. In this collection of chapel talks and homilies selected largely from his years as president of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, Dovre explores a “holy restlessness” that is at the very core of our being: A restlessness he describes as “unanswered and perhaps unanswerable questions…a restlessness that comes in trying to reconcile our need for unity as a people and the reality of our diversity…a restlessness found in the tension between suffering and hope.

Faith : Tested By Fire
$15.49Add to cartGold is a symbol of beauty and great value! But what process does it have to go through to become so valuable? It has to be heated in a refiner’s fire so that all the impurities rise to the top and the dross is taken away. Ouch! Like a refiner’s fire, life doesn’t give us comfort or the plans we expect; instead it is filled with trials. But what if these trials, instead of defeating us, are actually revealing in us something greater…the genuineness of our faith. In this book you will be inspired by how Dottie found her faith in God, how her faith affected her raising her children as a widow, why she chose to home school her children, and how her faith has sustained her through many valleys.

Comeback God : A Theological Primer For A Life Of Faith
$12.99Add to cartThe basic thesis is that Yahweh of Israel and the God who raised Jesus, often appearing throughout history to be “down for the count,” has an amazing comeback -ability. In the current postmodern context, where many despair of faith and seem to circle back to the 1960’s conclusion that “God is dead,” this book holds forth a reason to believe and a pathway to probe more deeply in contemporary images and language the age-old truth and traditions of faith.
-
Believing Again : Doubt And Faith In A Secular Age

When You Find Yourself In The Belly Of A Whale
$16.49Add to cartWhat is it like being in the belly of a whale? Well, it’s downright scary. And the surroundings are rather depressing. However, it is quiet. You have time to think-and pray. Singing sounds really good, much like being in the shower. You begin to explore the possibility of climbing out and taming the very thing that has consumed you. Beth Cantrell Whittington used humor, honesty, a battle with cancer, criminal justice career experiences, and down-to-earth devotional thoughts to focus on the big picture-looking at the surprising blows and storms of life through God’s eyes. Jesus was never diagnosed with a life threatening disease. He was never laid off because his company was downsizing. He never had family problems or experienced a mid-life crisis. But he was falsely accused, mocked, spat upon, beaten, and left to die on a cross. He can relate!

What is the relationship between faith and reason? How should faith and reason situate themselves in relation to each other? These are the chief questions that James Gilman seeks to address in Faith, Reason, and Compassion: A Philosophy of the Christian Faith. An innovative new book in philosophy of religion, it treats the problems typical of the discipline in an untypical way, with a methodology that presupposes a particular religious tradition, in this case Christianity, and that reenfranchises emotions (e.g., compassion) as crucial to shaping solutions to philosophical problems.Developing a methodology on the basis of three principles: the principle of symmetry, asymmetry, and supersymmetry, Gilman confiscates these three terms from physics and deploys them collectively as a metaphor in service to a method whereby the problems belonging to philosophy of religion can be critically and constructively treated. While ideal for courses in philosophy of religion, this book stretches across disciplines and is also ideal for use in Christian ethics and theology courses.

$13.49Add to cartAlthough it may appear that the forces of darkness are prevailing over the people of God, the Word declares that the very gates of hell shall not overtake the Church of the Living God. Jesus said, “On this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:18-19). The Church has been marching victoriously for over two thousand years, despite periods of bitter struggle, divisions, and persecution. As the struggles continue, many believers succumb to a spirit of defeat. But if we trust God, we can be confident that the best days are ahead. Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Once more … I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory. … The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine. … The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former. … And in this place, I will give peace” (Haggai 2:6-9)

Shouts And Whispers
$27.99Add to cartFlannery O’Connor once wrote that “to the hard of hearing you shout, and for the almost-blind you draw large and startling figures.” Some of the twenty-one well-known writers included in this book prefer to “shout,” as O’Connor did, while others offer what Doris Betts calls “whispering hope.”
Shouts and Whispers contains a fascinating array of reflections on topics surrounding the often-perilous intersection of writing and faith. The authors all agree that literature can help us to be more faithful, yet they approach the subject in ways as diverse as their biographies. Some, like Katherine Paterson and Frederick Buechner, propose models of how literature and belief can fruitfully intersect. Several authors offer insightful metaphors for the experience of doing faith-filled writing, while others speak of writing as finding hope in the midst of brokenness. Finally, in essays by Madeleine L’Engle, Thomas Lynch, and others, readers are encouraged to make the connection between writing and embodiment, translating words into actions.
While the essays, addresses, and interviews in Shouts and Whispers are by no means the final word, they will provoke rich and nuanced reflection on the dynamic relationship between faith and writing.
