  • Message Of Jonah (Revised)

    $25.00

The book of Jonah is likely the best known of the minor prophets. It is often remembered for its oddity: a runaway prophet swallowed by a whale! But there must be more to the book than that.

In Jonah we find charted the course not just of a discontented prophet but of Israel’s attitude toward its most despised neighbor in the Mediterranean world. Jonah refuses God’s call because he knows God will respond in mercy and grace should the Assyrians repent. Jonah will have no part of it-until he is compelled. And even then he pities himself.

The irony of this prophet’s story is amusing, but it also reaches out and touches us where we are today. Rosemary Nixon explores the depths of the book and helps us make connections with our view of God and his world.

Part of the beloved Bible Speaks Today series, The Message of Jonah offers an insightful, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. Used by students and teachers around the world, the Bible Speaks Today commentaries are ideal for those studying or preaching the Bible and anyone who wants to delve deeper into the text. This revised edition features lightly updated language, current Scripture quotations, and a new interior design.

  • Message Of Obadiah Nahum And Zephaniah (Revised)

    $30.00

Among the books of the Bible, Obadiah, Nahum, and Zephaniah are rarely read or preached. Gordon Bridger moves against this trend, encouraging the study and application of these Old Testament prophets.

Important biblical themes are found at the heart of these books: God’s personal, sovereign, righteous, and loving character; facing up to sin and judgment; responding in repentance and faith; and hoping for future salvation and restoration. And in touch with the social and political issues of their day, the prophets speak to the real world: immoral political and religious leaders, personal and national pride, and the exile of God’s people from their home.

Part of the beloved Bible Speaks Today series, The Message of Obadiah, Nahum and Zephaniah offers an insightful, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. • Message Of Amos (Revised)

    $20.00

They neglected the needy, gained material riches through exploitation, and indulged in inauthentic religious practices. And rather than following God in the pursuit of justice, they drew on the divine name to justify their pretense. This is the social landscape in which the prophet Amos delivers a message from God. With searing clarity and daring hope, Amos calls God’s people to repent, turn back toward the ways of God, and take up his will through clear acts of obedience.

In this volume Alec Motyer exposes and explains Amos’s prophetic call for Israel’s repentance, showing the message’s astonishing relevance for today. Part of the beloved Bible Speaks Today series, The Message of Amos offers an insightful, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. • Message Of Daniel (Revised)

    $20.00

Many have heard the story of Daniel in the lion’s den, but there is much more to the book of Daniel than lions. Interspersed with memorable stories is a complex series of visions that touch on the whole scope of human history.

In this Bible Speaks Today volume, former pastor and professor Dale Ralph Davis explains the background of Daniel, analyzes the stories and visions within it, and sifts through interpretative issues. While acknowledging the challenges of the book, Davis reveals how it offers “a realistic survival manual for the saints” in the present day.

  • Ezra And Nehemiah

    $20.00

In this introduction and commentary to the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, Derek Kidner’s clear prose and theological insight helps readers understand the complex literary and historical issues surrounding these two books and their chief characters.

“The chequered story of the Kings, a matter of nearly five centuries, had ended disastrously in 587 B.C. with the sack of Jerusalem, the fall of the monarchy and the removal to Babylonia of all that made Judah politically viable. It was a death to make way for a rebirth. So begins Derek Kidner in this introduction and commentary to the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, which chart the Jews’ return from exile to Jerusalem and the beginnings of a new start.

As the drama unfolds, we see how international politics, nationalist pride, wise leadership, political intrigue and opportunism, internal dissension and compromise all shape events. But above all we see the hand of God at work. In this volume, formerly part of the Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries series, Kidner’s clear prose and theological insight will help readers understand the complex literary and historical issues surrounding these two books and their chief characters.

    $25.00

The checkered story of the kings, lasting nearly five centuries, ended disastrously in 587 BC with the sack of Jerusalem, the fall of the monarchy, and the removal to Babylonia of all that made Judah politically viable. It was a death to make way for a rebirth. The closely related books of Ezra and Nehemiah chart the Jews’ return from exile to Jerusalem and the beginnings of that rebirth. As the drama unfolds, Geert Lorein explains, we see the good hand of God at work through it all.

Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries are designed to help the reader of the Bible understand what the text says and what it means. The Introduction to each book gives a concise but thorough treatment of its authorship, date, original setting, and purpose. Following a structural Analysis, the Commentary takes the book section by section, drawing out its main themes, and also comments on individual verses and problems of interpretation. Additional Notes provide fuller discussion of particular difficulties. In the new Old Testament volumes, the commentary on each section of the text is structured under three headings: Context, Comment, and Meaning. The goal is to explain the true meaning of the Bible and make its message plain.

“The Lord shepherds me, and nothing will be lacking for me. In a place of tender grass, there he causes me to encamp.”

In his reading of Psalm 23, early Christian theologian Didymus the Blind perceived the comfort that is provided only by Christ, the good shepherd: “The disciples of Christ who have become perfect in his instruction . . . do not simply hear a voice, but they are familiar with the teacher himself.”

Born around the year when the Edict of Milan legalized Christianity, Didymus the Blind (ca. 313-398) lost his sight due to an illness at a young age. He nevertheless excelled at learning and became a defender of Nicene orthodoxy against Arianism. Over the course of his career, he wrote numerous theological treatises and exegetical works. Though some of his theological speculations would later earn the ire of the Second Council of Constantinople, Didymus was also a careful exegete of Scripture.

This Ancient Christian Texts volume presents Didymus’s lectures on portions of the Psalms as they were originally presented to his students. Here readers can learn at the feet of this early Christian teacher and find comfort in the Word of God.

Ancient Christian Texts are new English translations of full-length commentaries or sermon series from ancient Christian authors that allow you to study key writings of the early church fathers in a fresh way.

  • Message Of Lamentation (Revised)

    $20.00

The destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 587 BC is the likely setting for the book of Lamentations. This was the most traumatic event in Old Testament history, as Israel faced extreme human suffering, the destruction of the ancient city, national humiliation, and the undermining of all that was thought to be divinely guaranteed, such as the Davidic monarchy, the city of Zion, and the very temple of their God. It is out of such unspeakable pain that Lamentations speaks, through poetry of astonishing beauty and intricacy, although soaked in tears.

If we neglect this book of the Bible, says Chris Wright, we miss the challenge and reward of wrestling with the massive theological issues that permeate it. How can suffering be endured alongside faith in an all-loving, good God? If death and destruction stalk the land, can Israel’s faith in the covenant God of faithfulness and mercy be sustained?

Through this commentary, Wright shows that we must not isolate Lamentations from the rest of the Bible, nor should we read the rest of the Bible without Lamentations. It is a crucial part of the narrative that still has many messages for us to learn from today.

Part of the beloved Bible Speaks Today series, The Message of Lamentations offers an insightful, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. Used by students and teachers around the world, the Bible Speaks Today commentaries are ideal for those studying or preaching the Bible and anyone who wants to delve deeper into the text. • Message Of Isaiah (Revised)

    $25.00

The book of Isaiah is outstanding in its brilliance of style, poetic power, and foretaste of the hope of the gospel. It tells how God himself has provided the highway to holiness for those who have been redeemed. These are images that evoke the exodus from Egypt and foreshadow Christ’s achievement at the cross. There is joy even in Isaiah’s portrayal of judgment-rebuilding within the demolition, the new replacing the old-as world events reveal God’s hand.

In the visionary world of Isaiah, the varied themes and imagery of the Old Testament converge and blend as they project an extraordinary climax of the story of Israel and of the world. Barry Webb calls Isaiah the Romans of the Old Testament, where all the threads come together and the big picture of God’s purposes are most clearly set forth. Attuned to the magnificent literary architecture of Isaiah, Webb escorts us through this prophecy and trains our ears and hearts to resonate with its great biblical-theological themes.

  • Message Of Jeremiah (Revised)

    $30.00

The prophet Jeremiah addressed the people of Judah over a forty-year period leading up to the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 BC. The book of Jeremiah addresses the exiles, especially those in Babylon, in the years after the catastrophe.

In this Bible Speaks Today volume, we encounter the prophet who delivered the word of God to the people of Israel at the most terrifying time in their history. Understanding Jeremiah’s context is essential to understanding his life and message. Even more, Christopher Wright shows, we must encounter the God of Jeremiah-an encounter that should be both profoundly disturbing and ultimately reassuring, as it was for Jeremiah.

In the end, Jeremiah is a book about the victory of God’s love and grace. God’s redemptive work constitutes the book’s portrait of the future-a future that we see fulfilled in the New Testament through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah, and ultimately in God’s dwelling with his redeemed people forever in the new creation.

  • Message Of The Song Of Songs (Revised)

    $25.00

At first reading, the Song of Songs appears to be an unabashed celebration of physical attraction, mutual love, and sexual consummation between a man and a woman. Tom Gledhill maintains that the Song of Songs is in fact just that-a literary, poetic exploration of human love that strongly affirms loyalty, beauty, and sexuality. Yet in God’s story, these things are not ends in themselves. They are also transcendental longings, whispers of immortality. Like all of creation they point beyond themselves to their divine author, who in this Song is nowhere mentioned but everywhere assumed.

Gledhill explores this unique biblical book that forms an interlude in the Old Testament story. He incorporates reflections on other biblical material concerning issues raised by the Song-such as human nature, mortality, and social and cultural conditioning-while staying focused on the text as an extended love poem, both beautiful and mysterious.

Part of the beloved Bible Speaks Today series, The Message of the Song of Songs offers an insightful, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. Used by students and teachers around the world, the Bible Speaks Today commentaries are ideal for those studying or preaching the Bible and anyone who wants to delve deeper into the text. • Matthew

    $45.00

This inaugural Interpretation Bible Commentary volume on Matthew by Mark Allan Powell brings theological and pastoral sensitivity to the text, exploring how the Gospel of Matthew might be understood today by readers who receive it as its intended audience.

It leads us to understand how the church can embody God’s abiding presence in the world, to explore how biblical ethics can remain relevant for ever-changing situations, to consider healthy interfaith dialogue between Jews and Christians, and to move progressively toward values of compassion, mercy, justice, and love. Powell’s exegesis emphasizes the Gospel’s sustained critique of coercive power and its support for children, immigrants, and other vulnerable or marginalized populations. It also makes an honest assessment of the text’s legacy, exposing unfortunate ways that it has been used throughout history (e.g., to justify Crusades and colonialism, or to sanction sexism, racism, and anti-Semitism). The volume also offers summaries of 17 prominent themes developed throughout Matthew, with cross-references to discussions of individual passages, and provides several excursuses that illuminate special topics such as worship, the Sermon on the Mount, the presence and absence of Jesus, stewardship, and Jewish responsibility for the death of Jesus.

Emphasizing sound critical exegesis with strong theological sensibilities, the new Interpretation Bible Commentary series features innovative interpretive approaches that help readers engage the biblical text as a source for participating in the larger social world. These new volumes, written by an array of new and diverse authors, are designed to meet the needs of clergy, teachers, and students by inviting readers into the lively work of careful biblical interpretation for the purpose of faithful exposition. Through its engagement with Scripture, the Interpretation Bible Commentary series illumines our relationship with God, one another, and creation so that readers are propelled with new understanding and energy for fulfilling God’s claims on us in our rapidly changing contexts.

  • Listening To The Jewish Jesus

    $17.99

Paul Luckraft’s book explores the Hebraic nature of the teaching of Jesus and shows how a first-century rabbi spoke to other Jews of the time and in particular taught his disciples. What can we expect to find from such an exploration, and what can this mean for us today?

Jesus used many Hebraic idioms, expressions commonly used in one language but which make less sense in another. Someone outside the culture or who is not a native speaker can easily be confused. A better grasp of such Hebraisms within the gospels will greatly improve our understanding of what Jesus is saying to us.

In his teaching Jesus often hinted at the Jewish scriptures, employing the rabbinic technique of remez. These allusions to the Old Testament would be readily picked up by his listeners but we can miss them. We need to find these and unpack the depths of their meaning.

Jesus’ teaching also reflects aspects of first-century Judaism with which we are largely unfamiliar and need to appreciate more fully. One of these is the relationship between a rabbi and his disciples, a theme which occupies the first part of the book.

This book will help those who teach the Bible as well as provide a companion for anyone wanting to read the gospels more accurately and follow Jesus more closely.
Come and listen afresh to the Jewish Jesus.

    $40.99

‘Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith. He was even called the friend of God.’ (James 2.23)

Abraham is the only character in the Bible to be described as ‘the friend of God’, and this comprehensive study by John Lennox shows why.

Abraham is unquestionably one of the most outstanding and influential figures in world history. He had no political or military achievements, and he left no literary remains, yet today billions of people – more than half of the world’s population – claim him as their spiritual father.

Throughout the Bible Abraham is seen as a pivotal figure in God’s plan of salvation, and in this richly detailed account of his life and times, John Lennox helps us to see through mists of the past to the real flesh-and-blood man, with all his strengths and weaknesses, and to better appreciate all that Abraham stands for as a model of faith for today.

    $60.00

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die…”

When the reformers of the sixteenth century turned to this well-known text from the Book of Ecclesiastes, they did not find a reason to despair, but rather confirmation of their hope and faith in God. For example, Martin Luther pointed to the comfort offered through this text: “You cannot live any longer than the Lord has prescribed, nor die any sooner. . . . To Christians this is a great comfort, so that they know that death has not been placed into the power of tyrants nor into the hands of any creature,” but in the hands of God.

In this volume of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture, Reformation scholar David Fink guides readers through a wealth of early modern commentary on three Old Testament books: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. Readers will hear from familiar voices and discover lesser-known figures from a diversity of theological traditions, including Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans and Roman Catholics. Drawing upon a variety of resources-including commentaries, sermons, treatises, and confessions-much of which appears here for the first time in English, this volume provides resources for contemporary preachers, enables scholars to better understand the depth and breadth of Reformation commentary, and seeks to help readers find comfort in God’s Word.

What is Paul’s letter to Philemon about? Was Onesimus a runaway slave? Or had Onesimus sent Philemon to Paul? Did Paul want Philemon to set Onesimus free? This commentary attempts to show that the usual questions about Onesimus are not the focus of the text itself. Instead, Paul was concerned about Philemon’s acceptance of Onesimus as a brother in the Lord. This acceptance, made possible by the transforming work of Christ in both men and by Paul’s modelling of Christian love, respected the socio-cultural positions of each man but at the same time acknowledged that these positions were now reconfigured by their Christian identity.

“This letter is truly the most important piece in the New Testament. It is purest Gospel… it seems that St. Paul, in writing this letter, wanted to compose a summary of the whole of Christian and evangelical teaching which would also be an introduction to the whole Old Testament.” ~ Martin Luther

Romans is more than a collection of proof texts for Reformed theology. It is an exposition of God’s plan to take back the world.

In this new commentary, Douglas Wilson tackles Paul’s meaty letter passage by passage, explaining Paul’s central message of the Gospel: Jesus’s death and resurrection have transformed the world. God has brought an end to the old covenant and ushered in a new covenant, joining Jews and Gentiles in one new people. And if Jesus is Lord, then Caesar is not, and thus the Gospel requires faithful Christians to defy tyrants when they usurp Jesus’s place.

If Romans hasn’t seemed so before, then certainly by the end of this commentary it will appear to you as it did to Protestant theologian Frederic Godet-as “the cathedral of Christian faith.”

  • 1 And 2 Thessalonians

    $45.00

The Thessalonian correspondence represents the earliest writing in the New Testament, according to many scholars. It speaks to a group of Christians struggling with thorny questions, such as: How should we live in the shadow of the coming parousia? What are our obligations to one another as followers of Jesus? How do we learn to trust the truth of the gospel? For Paul, this earliest correspondence was a test of his apostolic authority and also a means to express his genuine warmth and affection for the Christian community at Thessalonica. In spite of their relative brevity, the letters to the Thessalonians wrestle with ideas and obligations that remain relevant today.

The volumes in the Belief series offer a fresh and invigorating approach to all the books of the Bible. Building on a wide range of sources from biblical studies and the Christian tradition, renowned scholars focus less on traditional historical and literary angles in favor of a theologically focused commentary that considers the contemporary relevance of the text. Why then and why now are overarching questions asked throughout the volumes in the series.

In this insightful and accessible commentary, Nicholas Perrin explores the many unique pictures of Jesus found in the Gospel of Luke–from being a child in his Father’s house to associating with the poor and disreputable, in communion with the Holy Spirit, and, above all, setting out resolutely for Jerusalem to fulfill God’s plan for the world. With particular attention to the redemptive-historical storyline and its scriptural roots, Perrin examines how Luke’s Gospel is embedded in human history. He also show how it follows a cyclical narrative structure, with each recapitulation expanding the horizons of what has gone before. Part of the Tyndale New Testament commentary series, Luke: An Introduction and Commentary examines the text section-by-section–exploring the context in which it was written, providing astute commentary on Luke’s Gospel, and then unpacking the theology. It offers a thorough understanding of the content and structure of Luke, as well as its continued relevance for Christians today. • Message Of Ezra And Haggai (Revised)

    $20.00

Few sermons or Bible studies focus on Ezra or Haggai, two brief Old Testament books named for relatively unknown figures. But the message of both of these books–their emphasis on building for God, obedience to his Word, and openness to his Spirit–is one that needs to be heard clearly today. In this Bible Speaks Today volume, Robert Fyall’s pairing of Ezra with Haggai enhances our appreciation of each. The background to the books is the exile of Judah to Babylon and the return from exile following the edict of Cyrus. Ezra narrates the history of the period, while Haggai records a prophet’s exhortation to the people who had ceased building the temple because of external opposition and internal failure of nerve. Throughout these chapters we see how the greater purposes of God provide encouragement to God’s people in dispiriting times. Fyall highlights parallels between the challenges Israel faced and those of today’s church, demonstrating the relevance of the books of Ezra and Haggai for God’s people in all times. With passage-by-passage exposition of the biblical text, this resource will be helpful for pastors, teachers, and anyone who wants to dive deeper into these seldom-discussed Old Testament books. The Chronicler finds in the records of Israel the great overall pattern of God’s hand in history. The Lord’s constant mercy, love, and faithfulness shine through. With great perception, the Chronicler first selects and then proclaims this vibrant pattern, highlighted in the living events of the nation’s history. Once we grasp its purpose, the book comes alive. It can be seen as nothing less than a final and momentous look back over the entire Old Testament. In this commentary Wilcock shows how the various characters appearing in Chronicles make vivid the truths by which the Lord’s people in every generation are to live. • Message Of Esther (Revised)

    $20.00

The book of Esther tells the dramatic story of how the destruction of the Jews was averted through the bravery of Esther, the wisdom of Mordecai, and the unity of the Jewish people. Yet Esther is a rather strange book to find in the Bible. Not only is it set entirely outside of the Promised Land, it also shows no interest in that land. More than that, Esther is the only book in the Bible that definitely does not mention God, and it avoids any obviously religious language.

Nevertheless, Esther does have a developed theology. In this BST volume, David Firth explores this paradoxically important book and its implications for our own context, where the reality of God’s presence is experienced against a backdrop of God’s relative anonymity and seeming absence. Using brilliant satire and subtle scriptural allusions, the book of Esther offers us a model for dealing with a world where Christians are frequently a minority voice. It calls us to courageously engage society and be at the forefront of standing for justice, all while trusting in the God who is always at work.

In the face of great odds, this rebuilding represented the people’s renewal of faith, their overcoming of national shame, and the reformation of their conduct.

In this volume, Raymond Brown vividly sketches Nehemiah’s historical and social setting and demonstrates the book’s striking relevance for today. He explores the dominant themes of Nehemiah’s doctrine of God, passion for Scripture, experience of prayer, and example of leadership. In describing Nehemiah the man, Brown concludes, He must surely be regarded as one of the most inventive and resilient personalities in the rich tapestry of Old Testament biography.

  • Message Of Kings (Revised)

    $30.00

At the beginning of 1 Kings, Solomon’s reign brought peace, prosperity, dynamic international trade, and a magnificent center of worship. By the end of 2 Kings, the people faced a complete reversal: they and their king were in exile, and Jerusalem and the temple lay in ruins.

How can this story, told by the very people who suffered the defeat, be of value today? In this Bible Speaks Today volume, John Olley shows how the two books of Kings retell the past as preached history, addressing the exilic situation of the original readers. Within the account of paths leading to short-term success but ultimate failure, there are pointers of hope, of God’s continuing purposes and promises, and of the people’s response. In rich and often surprising ways, the narrative in Kings is part of the history that has shaped the faith of Christian believers. Everyday life, along with the turmoil of national and global events, is the arena in which God’s people are called to worship, trust, and obey him. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

When the Reformers of the sixteenth century turned to this biblical text, originally written by Paul to the first-century church in Corinth, they found truths that apply to Christians regardless of their historical context. For example, Reformed theologian Wolfgang Musculus wrote, To be a Christian is to be in Christ. If anyone is outside of Christ, he is not a Christian. It is easy to partake of the sacraments and to be of the name and profession of Christ, but that is not what it means to be in Christ… The largest part of Christians is still an old creature for they have not yet been regenerated and renewed by the spirit of Christ. To know a Christian, therefore, we should not so much examine his external profession, but his life.

In this volume of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture, Reformation scholar Scott Manetsch guides readers through a wealth of early modern commentary on the book of 2 Corinthians. Readers will hear from familiar voices and discover lesser-known figures from a diversity of theological traditions, including Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans and Roman Catholics. Drawing upon a variety of resources–including commentaries, sermons, treatises, and confessions–much of which appears here for the first time in English, this volume provides resources for contemporary preachers, enables scholars to better understand the depth and breadth of Reformation commentary, and seeks to encourage all those who would be newly created in Christ.

  • Matthew : A Commentary

    $90.00

In this new critical commentary for the New Testament Library series, R. Alan Culpepper sets the Gospel of Matthew in the context of the competing Jewish and early Christian voices of the first century, bringing greater clarity to Matthew’s own proclamation of the gospel and inviting readers to give up perhaps long-held assumptions about the book.

In Culpepper’s treatment, Matthew emerges as a Gospel for a Jewish community, distinguishing itself from the Pharisees on one side and other early Christian traditions and leaders, especially Paul and his followers, on the other side. In this framework, Matthew calls his community to faithful observance of the law, a law-observant mission to both Jews and Gentiles, and repentance and the practice of forgiving in preparation for the coming judgment. Accordingly, Matthew takes readers back to an early period, before the separation of Jewish Christians from the synagogues. By taking seriously Matthew’s Jewishness, this volume also enables readers to hear the historical Jesus more clearly. Excursuses on Matthew’s social setting include Jesus as healer, Sabbath observance, Roman taxation, the Pharisees, the tithes, ancient weddings, and the Sanhedrin, as well as many shorter units on Second Temple Judaism, synagogues, and first-century Galilean society.

The New Testament Library series offers authoritative commentary on every book and major aspect of the New Testament, providing fresh translations based on the best available ancient manuscripts, critical portrayals of the historical world in which the books were created, careful attention to their literary design, and a theologically perceptive exposition of the biblical text. The letter to the Philippians illuminates a warm relationship between the apostle Paul and the Philippian believers.

Despite difficult situations being experienced on both sides, Paul finds ample reason to celebrate what God in Christ has done and is doing in the believers’ lives. Jeannine K. Brown’s commentary on Philippians explores the themes of this epistle and how its message is still relevant to Christians in the twenty-first century. Brown shows how motifs of joy, contentment, and unity abound as Paul reminds the Philippians of the supreme value of knowing Jesus the Messiah, and she highlights their significance for shaping the contemporary church toward living more deeply in its identity in Christ. This Tyndale New Testament commentary examines the text section-by-section–exploring the context in which it was written, providing thoughtful commentary on the letter to the Philippians, and then unpacking its theology. It will leave you with a thorough understanding of the content and structure of Paul’s writing, as well as its meaning and continued relevance. The Tyndale New Testament Commentaries are ideal resources for students and teachers of theology, as well as for preachers and individual Christians looking to delve deeper into the riches of Scripture. Insightful and comprehensive, Jeannine K. Brown’s commentary on Philippians is a brilliant introduction that will give you a renewed appreciation for this rich Pauline epistle and a greater knowledge of why it is important to the Christian faith.

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead . . . Cyril of Alexandria (c. 378-444) was one of the most significant figures in the early church: bishop of the church, defender of orthodoxy, proponent of Alexandrian theology. Indeed, he is probably best known as the supporter of the term Theotokos (God-bearer) with regard to Mary in opposition to Nestorius during the early Christological controversies. But Cyril viewed himself, first and foremost, as an interpreter of Scripture. In this volume in IVP Academic’s Ancient Christian Texts series, Joel Elowsky and David Maxwell offer–for the first time in English–a translation of the surviving Greek and Syriac fragments of Cyril’s commentaries on four New Testament epistles: Romans, 1-2 Corinthians, and Hebrews. Abounding with Cyril’s insights regarding these canonical texts and biblical themes such as the triune nature of God, Christ’s sacrificial death, and justification, these commentaries are essential tools for understanding Cyril’s reading of Holy Scripture. Ancient Christian Texts is a series of new translations, most of which are here presented in English for the first time. The series provides contemporary readers with the resources they need to study for themselves the key writings of the early church. The texts represented in the series are full-length commentaries or sermon series based on biblical books or extended scriptural passages.

  • Message Of Joshua (Revised)

    $25.00

The book of Joshua tells the action-packed story of Israel’s entry into and conquest of Canaan, the promised land.

Yet it is often troubling for contemporary Christian readers, perhaps more than any other part of the Old Testament: isn’t there too much violence, and isn’t this violence inconsistent with the gospel of Jesus? In The Message of Joshua, David G. Firth explores this story as part of God’s mission, which goes on to find its ultimate focus in Jesus Christ. He illuminates the meaning that the book of Joshua still has for Christians today. It challenges us, just as it challenges those who have read it down through the ages, to recognize that God not only includes those who join him in his mission, but he also excludes those who choose to set themselves against it. Part of the well-loved The Bible Speaks Today series of commentaries, The Message of Joshua offers a clear, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. Where do we come from? What is our purpose? The key to how and why we are is found in the early chapters of Genesis.

In The Message of Genesis 1-11, David Atkinson explores how the first eleven chapters serve as an overture to the rest of the Bible. They evoke wonder as God is portrayed in his creative power and beauty. As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’

How should one interpret these words of Jesus? The sixteenth-century Reformers turned to Scripture to find the truth of God’s Word, but that doesn’t mean they always agreed on how to interpret it. For example, when approaching this passage from Matthew’s gospel, Martin Luther read it literally, for as he says in his own words, it is his body and his blood, but Thomas Cranmer argued that there must be some figure or mystery in this speech. In this Reformation Commentary on Scripture volume, scholars Jason K. Lee and William Marsh guide readers through a wealth of early modern commentary on the book of Matthew. Readers will hear from familiar voices and discover lesser-known figures from a diversity of theological traditions, including Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans and Roman Catholics. Drawing upon a variety of resources–including commentaries, sermons, treatises, and confessions–much of which appears here for the first time in English, this volume provides resources for contemporary preachers, enables scholars to better understand the depth and breadth of Reformation commentary, and seeks to encourage all those who desire to read the words of Scripture faithfully.

Romans has been described as the theological epistle par excellence.

The apostle Paul emphasizes that salvation is by God’s grace alone and that freedom, hope, and the gift of righteousness are secured through Christ’s death and resurrection, with the promise of a new and glorious destiny. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, believers can discern and do the will of God. God’s purpose is to bring Jews and Gentiles together so that they may glorify him with one voice. In this Tyndale Commentary, David Garland offers clear guidance along the rewarding, though sometimes difficult, paths of this great letter. The Tyndale Commentaries are designed to help the reader of the Bible understand what the text says and what it means. The Introduction to each book gives a concise but thorough treatment of its authorship, date, original setting, and purpose. Immorality inundating the Christian community and gradually eroding the foundations of Christian living.

The truth of God incarnate, the atonement, and the bodily resurrection of Christ under attack–even from within the church. These were the problems that faced the Christians of John’s day. In a society that scorned the gospel and sneered at godly living, John encouraged Christians with a message forged from two words: truth and love. The concerns of John’s original readers are still the concerns of the church now. In this accessible retelling of John’s message, David Jackman provides historical background, identifies key themes, and offers applications for today. After he had washed the disciples’ feet, Jesus said, “Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”

The second half of the Gospel of John, sometimes called the most “theological” of the Gospels, includes John’s account of Jesus’ final night with his disciples, his betrayal and arrest, his crucifixion, his resurrection, and his appearances to his disciples. When the Reformers of the sixteenth century turned to the fourth Gospel, they found a multitude of theological treasures: a clear affirmation of the full divinity of Christ; insights into the relationships among the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; and guidance for the church in their time. For example, John Calvin claimed, “This Gospel is a key to open the door for understanding the rest; for whoever shall understand the power of Christ, as it is here strikingly portrayed, will afterwards read with advantage what the others relate about the Redeemer who was manifested.” In this volume of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture, church historian Christopher Boyd Brown guides readers through a diversity of early modern commentary on chapters 13-21 of the Gospel of John. Readers will hear from familiar voices and discover lesser-known figures from a range of theological traditions, including Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans, and Roman Catholics. Drawing upon a variety of resources–including commentaries, sermons, treatises, and confessions–much of which appears here for the first time in English, this volume provides resources for contemporary preachers, enables scholars to better understand the depth and breadth of Reformation commentary, and seeks to encourage all those who desire to love as Jesus loves.

Yet no one can come away from a careful reading of Ephesians with a privatized gospel. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians clearly sets forth God’s eternal purpose to create the church–God’s new society. In this revised Bible Speaks Today volume, John Stott expounds Paul’s theme of uniting all things in Christ by uniting his church. Guiding readers passage by passage through Ephesians, he provides helpful background, highlights key themes, and offers applications for Christians today. Drawing from his many years of studying and teaching Ephesians, Stott lays out the book’s compelling vision of what the church should be and its ongoing need for renewal. Christians are called to new life, new standards, and new relationships within the new society, where God breaks down all the barriers that have divided us from God and each other. This revised edition of a classic volume features a new interior design, updated Scripture quotations, and light updates throughout.

  • Commentarie On Job Hosea Joel And Amos

    $70.00

In this ACT volume, Thomas Scheck provides a new translation of Julian of Eclanum’s commentaries on Job, Hosea, Joel, and Amos. Gain insight into how early Christians read texts such as God’s speech to Job, Hosea’s symbolic representation of God’s unending love for a faithless Israel, Joel’s anticipation of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and Amos’s call for social justice.

“Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind . . . ” Julian of Eclanum (c. 386-455) was the bishop of Eclanum, located in modern-day Italy. In this volume in IVP’s Ancient Christian Texts series, Thomas Scheck provides a new translation of Julian’s commentaries on the biblical books of Job and those of three Minor Prophets: Hosea, Joel, and Amos. Here, readers will gain insight into how early Christians read texts such as God’s speech to Job, Hosea’s symbolic representation of God’s unending love for a faithless Israel, Joel’s anticipation of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and Amos’s call for social justice. While Julian was a well-known leader among the Pelagians, whose theology was famously opposed by Augustine of Hippo and ultimately determined to be outside the bounds of the church’s orthodoxy, the Pelagian movement was a significant element within the early church. And although Julian’s Pelagianism does not fundamentally affect the commentaries presented in this volume, Christians can gain insight into the truths of Scripture by reading the text alongside others, even when-or perhaps especially when-we might disagree with other aspects of their beliefs.

Guiding readers passage by passage through Galatians, he provides helpful background, highlights key themes, and offers applications for Christians today. • Message Of 1 Corinthians (Revised)

    $30.00

The ancient city of Corinth was well-known for its prosperity, diversity–and debauchery.

Any church planted there was bound to have problems. Indeed, snobbishness, divisiveness, insensitivity, doctrinal looseness, and overexuberance were all too common in the Corinthian church. When the apostle Paul heard about these difficulties, he was grieved because he had founded the church and felt closely tied to it. He wrote them an intense and pointed letter. In this revised Bible Speaks Today volume, David Prior plainly shows the relevance of 1 Corinthians for our times. Along with clear exposition of each passage and information about the letter’s historical background, Prior identifies key principles and applications for today. When we understand the message of this epistle to the Corinthians, all churches may better live out the lordship of Christ in our cosmopolitan world. This redesigned new edition includes updated language and current NRSV Scripture quotations throughout.
