Nehemiah : Man Of Radical Obedience (Student/Study Guide)
$14.99Add to cart10 Lesson Bible Study
Additional Info
A great job, wonderful friends, financial security. What if God asked you to leave it all behind today – to forsake everything familiar and comfortable? To give it all up to go to a neglected, third-rate portion of the world and to rebuild a city you’ve never seen?Sound unlikely? This is precisely a portrait of Nehemiah, cupbearer to the king of Persia. After hearing that a plan to rebuild Jerusalem’s ruined city wall had tragically failed, Nehemiah’s heart was broken. Yet, he wasn’t satisfied simply to lament the incident from his sheltered life in Persia. Hearing God’s call for him to go back to his homeland and see the wall restored completely, he responded in radical obedience, forsaking everything to follow God’s instructions.
In this captivating 10-week study of an often-overlooked Old Testament book, the authors link Nehemiah’s obedience with its practical implications for believers today. As Nehemiah faced great opposition and numerous setbacks, he and the Israelites learned how to totally abandon themselves to God’s will and way for their lives. Each lesson offers valuable observations to help deepen faith, inspire hope, and strengthen the resolve to follow God’s leading at all costs.

$14.99Add to cart10 Lesson Bible Study

Moral decay, hedonistic lifestyle, political controversy. Characteristics from contemporary culture? For the Hebrew people exiled to Babylon in 539 BC, those words typified the lifestyle to shich they had become accustomed.Imagine being away from your homeland so long that the strange landscape, foreign people, and pagan customs are now familiar and comfortable – and the land of your birth seems nothing more than a distant dream. God’s Word and you Jewish faith in Him have faded into memory.
This was the regrettable situation the Hebrew people found themselves in. And when the impossible happened – a decree allowing them to return to their homeland – God planted a holy desire in the hearts of many Jews to return. Additionally, He commissioned the scribe Ezra to lead the return and, more importantly, to teach his people to love God and His Word once again.
The 10-week Bible Study examines the fascinating return of the Jewish people to their homes – and their faith – as they take a fresh look at the God of the ages. Each lesson provides challenging insights into the cultural, historical, and biblical background of the Book Of Ezra. God’s master design for His people is revealed once again as He continues to address a world in desperate need of moral restoration.

No Shame : A Study Of Six New Testament Women (Student/Study Guide)
$7.95Add to cartCindy Bailey believes that many women allow shame and embarrassment to cripple their walk with Christ. She has witnessed women who seem to feel that they aren’t qualified or “good enough” to use their God-given talents. No Shame refutes that premise and spotlights women in the New Testament who served the Lord boldly and effectively, confident of God’s will. Despite the odds against them and their humble backgrounds, these women were not ashamed to repeat an unanswered prayer or rise to God’s call. A great study with excellent documentation, this book is perfect for women’s groups and adult Sunday school classes, as well as for personal reading and devotion.

Who They Really Were
$15.95Add to cartWhen the problem of what to preach next Sunday raises its frowning head, solve it by calling on one of the hundreds of biblical characters standing in line at your study door, nearly beating it down with their clamorous “Take me! Take me!”.
Preaching on biblical personalities has an irresistible appeal, because audiences are more interested in people than in anything else. Jesus himself preached mainly about people (“a certain man had two sons …”); so there’s no excuse for making the Gospel dull — and with the help of Bodo’s book, preachers can add spice to the pulpit fare they serve up week after strenuous week. -

He then explores, from four perspectives, Jesus’ contemporary moral and theological pertinence. Keck looks initially at Jesus as a first-century Jew, then considers how Jesus’ mission was energized by his grasp of the kingdom of God. He goes on to probe the meaning of the crucifixion of Jesus in light of the biblical understanding of God’s holiness, a theme largely neglected today. Dr Engberg-Pedersen shows how a range of problems encountered in twentieth-century interpretation of three major Pauline letters (Philippians, Galatians, Romans) may be overcome by reading the epistles in the light of ancient Stoic ethics.
He discusses literary, conceptual and theological issues: for example, the unity and purpose of the letters; the relationship in the letters between theology and ethics; the logical character and shape of Pauline exhortation; the relationship in Paul between cognition and participation; the meaning of righteousness from faith; Paul’s handling of the Jewish law. The author illuminates the central core of Paul’s thought by applying the Stoic perspective and argues that scholars must move beyond the traditional Judaism/Hellenism divide to read a comprehensive and accurate reading of Paul’s lettrs. -

Paul : The Man And The Myth
$29.00Add to cartWe are left to reconstruct a portrait of Paul with only scraps of what was once a large and imposing canvas-a small collection of letters and a historical narrative written a generation after his death. This reconstruction focuses on important parts of the image that usually fall in the shadows, parts dealing with Paul’s sexual asceticism, his preoccupation with holiness-holy Spirit, holy community, and holy ethos-the evolution of his theology, and his emergence as a legendary figure. Although I have tried to follow the strict rules of historical investigation, of necessity much guesswork is involved in any exploration of Paul’s life. All of these efforts are attempts to deal with the gaps in the text, understood in the broadest sense to include not just Paul’s written words but also the culture, social world, and political realities surrounding them.

Reading Ruth : Contemporary Women Reclaim A Sacred Story

It is also a tradition during this holiday to spend the night studying the Old Testament (some people even stay up all night!). The year that I worked on the publicity for Reading Ruth, my sister and I decided to have our own study session during Shavuot and we read parts of this book together. We had a wonderful time reading the poems by Marge Piercy, Ruth Whitman, and Merle Feld and discussing the themes of the Book of Ruth — including loss, the relationship between sisters, and the bond between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. In addition to poetry, Reading Ruth includes essays, fiction, and personal narrative by famous Jewish women who are novelists, poets, rabbis, psychologists, and scholars. If you enjoy women studies and/or Bible studies you will enjoy Reading Ruth — any time of the year!

Roots Of Wisdom
$34.00Add to cartIn this book, Claus Westermann argues that Israel’s early wisdom literature grew out of an oral tradition reflecting an agrarian setting. Dealing primarily with Proverbs 10-31, Westermann demonstrates how the wisdom literature evolved into a form of poetry that had greater universal appeal as the people of Israel became more urbanized. A distinctive feature of Roots of Wisdom is Westermann’s use of other wisdom sayings, particularly those from ancient Africa, to illustrate the logical progression of wisdom poetry being simply observational in character to becoming more universal in character.

From Eve To Esther

As women and men today attempt to reevaluate past historical models, it serves us well to understand the values and inner workings of rabbinic thinking. As Dr. Baxter points out in his foreword, “The biographical treasures of the Bible are exhaustless. Again and again we turn back to the figures which move before us in its pages, and find new relevancies, new significances, new applicaitons to our own times and to our own lives. Somehow, these Scripture characters seem to be invested with typologically and representative qualities which live for all time.”
Included are provocative profiles of Elisha and Elijah, King Saul, Daniel, Gideon, Balaam, and Nehemiah. Also included are such New testament characters as: the Apostle Paul, Lazarus, the rich young ruler, Ananias, and Simon of Cyrene. -
Gnostic Paul
$37.95Add to cartIn this landmark work, Elaine Pagels demonstrates how evidence from gnostic sources may challenge the long-established assumption that Paul writes his letters to combat “gnostic opponents” and to repudiate their claims to secret wisdom. Drawing upon evidence from a variety of gnostic sources, including the Nag Hammadi documents, Pagels demonstrates how gnostic writers not only failed to grasp the whole point of Paul’s writings, but dared to claim his letters as a primary source for their anthropology, Christology, and sacramental theology.

A series of insightful and Bible-centered sermons on great (and not so great) women of the Bible from the mind and pen of one of America’s great preachers. Of this series Macartney wrote: “Among the subjects of the sermons in this volume is one of the bad women of the Bible, for no series on women of the Bible would be complete without a sermon on such a character as Delilah, the temptress of Samson.“To preach on these biblical women is to illustrate life in its deepest reality – sometimes base, ignoble, comtemptible and wicked, but often lofty, noble, godlike, and glorious. Like the great men of the Bible, too, the great women of the Bible afford the preacher an unsurpassed opportunity to press home upon the people the claims of Christ as Friend and Redeemer.”
In this series of thirteen sermons, Macartney uses his “sanctified imagination” and bibilcal knowledge to glean lessons from the lives of Ruth, Esther, Rahab, Lot’s Wife, Martha and Mary, Delilah, Abigail, Rachel, Rebekah, The Samaritan Woman, The Shunammite, The Woman with the Issue of Blood, and The Faithful Woman of Proverbs 31.

Imitating Paul : A Discourse Of Power
$35.00Add to cartWhat does it mean to imitate another person? What relationships are possible and necessary, or unthinkable, because of exhortation advising people to imitate Paul? What are the effects of giving special status to likeness? Questions such as these are posed in this thought-provoking book that addresses the notion of mimesis (imitation) and how it functions in Paul’s letters as a strategy of power.
The Literary Currents in Biblical Interpretation series explores current trends within the discipline of biblical interpretation by dealing with the literary qualities of the Bible: the play of its language, the coherence of its final form, and the relationships between text and readers. Biblical interpreters are being challenged to take responsibility for the theological, social, and ethical implications of their readings. This series encourages original readings that breach the confines of traditional biblical criticism.
