Last Trial The Akedah
$18.99Add to cart“We find that the story of Abraham and Isaac rises almost spontaneously in the mind of one generation after another…. Constantly past and present react to and upon each other, and life is given an order, a coherence, by the themes which govern the Holy Scriptures and the reinterpretations of those themes.”
-from the Introduction by Judah Goldin
Shalom Spiegel’s classic examines the total body of texts, legends, and traditions referring to the Binding of Isaac and weaves them together into a definitive study of the Akedah as one of the central events in all of human history.
Spiegel here provides the model for showing how legend and history interact, how the past may be made comprehensible by present events, and how the present may be understood as a renewal of revelation. -
Making The Church Work (Revised)
$12.00Add to cartIn the first edition of Making the Church Work, Hammett wrote that the church is not only in need of change, but also in need of a conversion. Now his conviction is stronger than ever. In this second edition, he addresses the issues of changing values–values about what leaders and their congregations are doing as a church and the effectiveness of their techniques. * Opportunities for individual readers and small groups, and congregations to reflect on their journey in light of these trends and issues
Practical guidance for addressing some problems and for equipping the church for more effective ministry in the 21st century

Hacia Una Teologia Del Antiguo – (Spanish)
$17.99Add to cartDiscover a new the panorama of the Old Testament as Walter Kaiser explores the theology that grew and developed from Genesis to Malachi. Kaiser bares the bedrock of our faith by examining what the texts themselves say without the superimposition of philosophies, pre-suppositions, or theological systems. Instead he shows the actual theological world that each writer inhabited and how they combined their theological inheritance from earlier writers and prophets with the new and sometimes surprising revelation they received for application to the circumstances and needs of their own epoch. This is a book with theological meat that should have a place in the library of every serious Bible student, seminarian and pastor. This book is the cornerstone for developing an exegesis, an exposition, a proclamation and a systematic theology. Here are the issues, the conflicts and the possibility of a real beginning for a genuine biblical theology. Dr. Kaiser tests his approach by chronologically discussing the texts from each of the Old Testament eras from creation to the postexilic period. A special section examines the connections between the Old and New Testament theology.

Pastoral Liturgy New Handbook
$34.99Add to cartA guide to liturgy and worship in the Church of England within the framework of ‘Common Worship’, which combines theory, theology and history with a strong sense of the realities of parish life and pastoral practice. It explores the way in which liturgy can reflect the life of the church and the wider world, and the new opportunities for churches at a local level to own and shape the liturgy they use. This book is essential reading for anyone involved in worship in the Church of England, and who wants the worship of their church to be the best they can offer, based on clear liturgical principles. It is also practical and detailed – Michael Perham covers clothing and colours, children’s role in worship, the cycle of the Christian year, the timing of services, the use of church space and other elements that go to make up the feel of an individual church. The book has its roots in two of Michael Perham’s earlier works, ‘Liturgy Pastoral and Parochial’ and ‘Lively Sacrifice’, though much of the material is quite new, and fills its role as key texts for anyone interested in the liturgy of the Church of England.

Sabbath : Finding Rest Renewal And Delight In Our Busy Lives
$19.00Add to cartIn today’s world, with its relentless emphasis on success and productivity, we have lost the necessary rhythm of life, the balance between work and rest. Constantly striving, we feel exhausted and deprived in the midst of great abundance. We long for time with friends and family, we long for a moment to ourselves.
Millennia ago, the tradition of Sabbath created an oasis of sacred time within a life of unceasing labor. Now, in a book that can heal our harried lives, Wayne Muller, author of the spiritual classic How, Then, Shall We Live?, shows us how to create a special time of rest, delight, and renewal–a refuge for our souls.
We need not even schedule an entire day each week. Sabbath time can be a Sabbath afternoon, a Sabbath hour, a Sabbath walk. With wonderful stories, poems, and suggestions for practice, Muller teaches us how we can use this time of sacred rest to refresh our bodies and minds, restore our creativity, and regain our birthright of inner happiness.

Why Government Cant Save You
$18.99Add to cartAn alternative to political Activism
Though the Lord relentlessly proclaimed the law of God, He did not come as a political deliverer or social reformer. He did not issue a call for changes, even by peaceful means. Nor did Jesus rally supporters in a grandiose attempt to “capture the culture” for morality or greater political and religious freedoms. Rather, His divine calling was to rescue the lost souls of individual men and women from sin and hell.
“A certain amount of healthy and balanced concern about current trends in government and the community is acceptable, as long as we realize that such interest is not vital to our spiritual lives, our righteous testimony or the advancement of the kingdom of Christ. Above all, the believer’s political involvement should never displace the priority of preaching and teaching the gospel because the morality and righteousness that God seeks is the result of salvation and sanctification.”-John MacArthur
In Why Government Can’t Save You (An Alternative to Political Activism), author John MacArthur illustrates through Scripture that, regardless of the numerous immoral, unjust, and ungodly failures of secular government, believers are to pray and seek to influence the world for Christ by godly, selfless, and peaceful living under that authority, not by protests against the government or by acts of civil disobedience. Dr. MacArthur will explore these areas:
* Christians’ Responsibility to authority
* How and why to support our leaders
* How to live righteously in a pagan culture
* The principle of paying taxes
* Jesus’ lessons on tax exemptions
* The biblical purpose of government
* The principle and reasons for civil obedience“To devote all, or even most, or our time, energy, money, and strategy to putting a facade of morality on the world or the appearance of ‘rightness’ over our governmental and political institutions is to badly misunderstand our roles as Christians in a spiritually lost world.”-John MacArthur
In this book find out your Christian responsibility to government and political causes.

Self Struggle And Change
$18.99Add to cartHow do I find greater wholeness in my life and in my family’s life?
“To appreciate the importance of the Bible and gain insight about ourselves from it, both Jews and Christians can use the process of midrash: The attempt to find contemporary meaning in the biblical text. The term midrash comes from the Hebrew root darash which means to seek, search, or demand (meaning from the biblical text). The starting point of our search for personal meaning is the Bible itself…. Each generation, each reader, can approach the text anew and draw meaning from it.” -from Self, Struggle & Change
The stress of late-20th-century living only brings new variations to timeless personal struggles. The people described by the biblical writers of Genesis were in situations and relationships very much like our own, and their stories still speak to us because they are about the same basic problems we deal with every day.
Learning from Adam and Eve, can we find the courage not only to face our other side, but to draw strength from it? Learning from Leah and Rachel, can we stop competing with our loved ones, and begin to accept them and find ourselves? Sarah, Hagar, Lot, Ishmael and Isaac, Rebekkah, Joseph and his brothers, Jacob and Esau…this vibrant cast of characters offers us new ways of understanding ourselves and our families and healing our lives.
A modern master of biblical interpretation brings us greater understanding of the ancient biblical text, and of the insights its characters give us about ourselves and our families today.
By bringing the people in Genesis to life-husbands and wives, fathers and sons, brothers and sisters-Self, Struggle & Change shows us how to find wholeness in our lives. -
Congregational Fitness : Healthy Practices For Layfolk
$23.00Add to cartWhen serious conflict surfaces in a congregation, lay people are usually stunned. They feel frightened, angry, and helpless. Congregational Fitness explores why congregations are prone to conflict and describes healthy behaviors lay people can practice to manage conflict constructively. Goodman argues that since it is members of the congregation who carry on from one pastor to another, it is important for them to know and practice positive behaviors continually, rather than reacting out of emotion and anxiety to an unexpected situation. Designed for use by individuals, study groups, and retreat participants. Foreword by Hugh F. Halverstadt.

Can Evangelicals Learn From World Religions
$30.99Add to cartChristianity has always faced the scandal of particularity. What does it mean to claim that God has revealed himself uniquely through the history of Israel and the person of Jesus? And what can evangelicals learn from it?

In 1637 Anne Hutchinson spoke in her own voice declaring that she had received a revelation directly from God. But Anne became her own person and a model of womanhood for us over four and one-half centuries later.
Sister Blandina Segale found her own voice when she stopped a lynch mob and kept the Billy the Kid gang from scalping doctors in Colorado in the 1870s.

Sally Priesand gained her voice to preach and officiate at Jewish religious services when she became the first woman rabbi ordained in the Reform Movement of Judaism in 1972.

Cahill’s important work brings fresh historical, theological, and ethical thought to the explosive area of family_deeply contested territory in today’s cultural and religious skirmishes. In the religious arena, evangelical-conservative vs. mainline-feminist lines echo larger social battles, contesting the authentic meaning of family within a Christian framework.
Though “family” has been dissected in the academic and cultural wars, Cahill asserts that the usual religious agenda of restoring the traditional nuclear family is actually misinformed and misguided. It bolsters oppressive social, economic, and racial mechanisms that are destroying families at the bottom, middle, and even top of the ladder.
Is there an authentically Christian notion of family? Cahill’s contribution shows in a striking way how very different were counter-cultural New Testament and early-church notions of family from our ideas of “family values;” how, throughout history, other influential Christian examples have emerged in the work of John Chrysostom, Martin Luther, and the Puritans; how, despite distortion by gender and class divisions, there develops a Christian vision of the altruistic family, animated by Christian discipleship to stand for compassion, generosity, and justice; how pertinent this vision of the “domestic church” is to public debate and public policy.

No One Can Stem The Tide
$10.00Add to cartThough most of Jane Tyson Clement’s poems remained hidden in private notebooks during her lifetime (1917-2000), the few that traveled beyond her hands were widely admired and drew critical acclaim. Now, with this first comprehensive anthology of her work, the public can at last discover this gifted poet and give her the audience she deserves.
Evoking comparisons to such better-known contemporaties as Jane Kenyon, Wendell Berry, and Denise Levertov, Clement is direct and understated. Even when technically sophisticated, her poetry speaks with a familiar voice and draws on accessible images from the natural world.
Still, these are no mere “nature poems.” In exploring the varied emotions of life–of love, longing, and loss; memory, sacrifice, and desire; struggle and frustration, joy and resolve–they reveal the tireless seeking of a generous and honest heart and beckon the reader down new avenues of seeing and hearing.

Paideia Of God
$10.00Add to cartYou can teach your students the Trivium, but if that is all you teach them, then you’re both in trouble. As these essays point out, education must remember the lessons of old without ignoring the demands of now.
In the ancient world, paideia was an all-encompassing education and involved nothing less than the enculturation of the future citizen. Scripture requires Christian fathers to raise their children in “the nurture and admonition (paideia) of the Lord.” However, the boundaries of paideia are much wider than the boundaries of what we understand as education. Wilson elaborates on this, as well as canvassing educational hot topics such as vouchers, uniforms, and college choices.
