We live in a world shot through with evil. The twentieth century has witnessed suffering and human cruelty on a scale never before imagined. Yet, paradoxically, in recent years the doctrine of original sin has suffered neglect and ridicule. In this philosophically sophisticated treatment of the biblical evidence for original sin, Henri Blocher offers a robust response. Interacting with the best theological thinking on the subject, this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume shows that while the nature of original sin is a mystery-even a riddle-only belief in it makes sense of evil and wrongdoing.
After a general survey of the biblical evidence, Blocher moves on to discuss the two key texts. First, he considers the relation of the Eden story of Genesis 2 and 3 to modern scientific, literary and theological thinking. Then, he offers a new and groundbreaking interpretation of Romans 5, where Paul discusses Christ and Adam. From this exegetical foundation, he goes on to show how the doctrine of original sin makes sense of the paradoxes of human existence. In the final chapter, he discusses the intellectual difficulties that some feel remain with the doctrine itself.
Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead

In this splendidly crafted work, McFague argues for theology as an ethical imperative for all thinking Christians: Responsible discipleship today entails disciplined religious reflection. Moreover, theology matters: Without serious reflection on their worldview, ultimate commitments, and lifestyle, North American Christians cannot hope to contribute to ensuring the “good life” for people or the planet. To live differently we must think differently.McFague has therefore written this primer in theology. It helps Christians assess their own religious story in light of the larger Christian tradition and the felt needs of the planet. At once an apology for an ecologically driven theology and a model for how theology itself might be expressed, her work is expressly crafted to bring people into the practice of religious reflection as a form of responsible Christian practice in the world. McFague shows the reader how articulating one’s personal religious story and credo can lead directly into contextual analysis, unfolding of theological concepts, and forms of Christian practice.
In lucid prose she offers creative discussions of revelation, the reigning economic worldview (and its ecological alternative), and how a planetary theology might approach classical areas of God and the world, Christ and salvation, and life in the Spirit. Enticing readers into serious self-assessment and creative commitment, McFague’s new work encourages and models a theological practice that “gives glory to God by loving the world.”

Ministerio De Jovenes Con Prop – (Spanish)
$18.99Add to cartIf you long to reach kids and see their lives changed by God, this comprehensive guide shows you how.
Moving to the fundamental purpose of evangelism, discipleship, friendship, ministry and worship, “Purpose Driven Youth Ministry” uses the experience of Saddleback Church to illustrate what a youth ministry can do. Here are nine basic principles that will help you: -Connect the power of God with an enthusiastic and committed leadership -Define the purpose of your ministry and communicate it effectively -Identify your potential audience -Create programs that reach your audience and fulfill God’s purposes -Implement processes that move students to maturity -Enhance your ministry with clearly defined values -Team up with parents to involve the whole family -Find volunteers and help develop them into participating leaders -Persevere through tough times and thrive in an ever-changing environment.
Balancing both theory and practice, “Purpose Driven Youth Ministry” can be applied to any church setting, regardless of size, denomination, facilities, resources, and existing leadership.
This book will help you develop a ministry that equips students rather than a ministry that coordinates events. Doug Fields says, “My goal for this book is to coach through a plan to build a healthy youth ministry that isn’t dependent on one great youth leader and won’t be destroyed when the youth worker leaves the church. It’s not a book on how to grow your youth ministry with six easy steps; it’s about identifying, establishing, and building health into your church’s youth ministry.”

When God Weeps
$19.99Add to cartIf God is loving, why is there suffering? What’s the difference between permitting something and ordaining it? When bad things happen, who’s behind them, God or the devil? When suffering touches our lives, questions like these suddenly demand an answer. From our perspective, suffering doesn’t make sense, especially when we believe in a loving and just God. After more than thirty years in a wheelchair, Joni Eareckson Tada’s intimate experience with suffering gives her a special understanding of God’s intentions for us in our pain. In When God Weeps, she and lifelong friend Steven Estes probe beyond glib answers that fail us in our time of deepest need. Instead, with firmness, and compassion, they reveal a God big enough to understand our suffering, wise enough to allow it and powerful enough to use it for a greater good than we can ever imagine.

Ethics And Spiritual Care
$23.99Add to cartEthics and Spiritual Care responds to three phenomena of increasing importance. (1) Although spiritual care is at the heart of ordained ministry, there is no text in professional ethics for clergy that focuses specifically on spiritual care. What ethical guidelines are needed to ensure that spiritual care in ministry is appropriate? (2) Many people in our world do not consider themselves “religious,” but use the term “spiritual.” The burgeoning interest in “spirituality” is an invitation to people with little training to set themselves up as “spiritual directors.” Guidelines are needed not simply for the ethical practice of parish ministry, but for specific practices of spiritual direction. (3) Allegations of “spiritual abuse” have been made both in practice and in the literature: the term is being used with some frequency. The development of the term and its implications requires some scrutiny and response as “sexual abuse” is not a good model for understanding spiritual abuse.

Como Jesus – (Spanish)
$14.99Add to cartWhere did we get this idea that we can’t change? From whence come statements such as, “It’s just my nature to worry.” “I’ll always be pessimistic. I’m just that way.” “I can’t help the way I react. I have a bad temper.” Such thoughts are not from God. He can no more leave a life unchanged than a mother can leave a tear untouched. His plan for you is nothing short of a new heart. If you were a car, God would want control of your engine. If you were a computer, God would claim the software and the hard drive. If you were an airplane, He’d take His seat in the cockpit. But you are a person, so God wants to change your heart. Max Lucado tells how God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you there. He wants you to have a heart like His. He wants you to be Just Like Jesus.

Caring Well provides a fresh approach to problems in medical ethics. It shows how attending closely to the concerns and religious commitments of both patients and professionals enables ethicists to offer wiser critiques of moral issues in the field of health care. Beginning with chapters that work to recover an experience-near method of engaging moral problems from classic twentieth century writing on religion and medicine, the contributors next consider how the practice of care-giving is shaped by the particular commitments they serve, and patients themselves. Then, through on-the-ground accounts of issues attending the donation and transplant of organs, contributors consider how ethicists might help patients, their families, and professionals work through conflicts between commitments. The final chapters offer perspectives on the ways experience-near appraisals of care for the dying can help all parties concerned_health care professionals, patients, their families, and ethicists_to affirm the dignity of the dying and to connect the experience of mortality with what it means to be human. -

Combining biblical scholarship, midrash, and an imaginative, fictional approach, Mary Ellen Ashcroft takes a new look at seven biblical women: Mary Magdalene, Maria, Sister of Martha, Mary the Mother of Jesus, Joanna, The Samaritan Woman, and Martha. In this book Ashcroft views these women in light of Christ’s resurrection. What might they have thought, felt, and done, once they knew that Jesus had been raised from the dead? How did they influence and help build the early Christian movement?
Ashcroft maintains that these women have become “lost” in history, that their true identities have been obscured. By seeing them afresh, we can gain insights for our own discipleship. Ashcroft says, “Mentors and foremothers of the faith, have you been lost, or have we? You have sat, watching these many years, waiting to welcome us. Perhaps it is in finding you that we find our place in the faith.” Spirited Women includes spiritual exercises for meditation, reflection, prayer, and discussion.

This book helps those who provide care to victims of abuse and violence add to their knowledge base an understanding of evil_and how it works to destroy. Arguing that “the worst forms of trauma are the human intentional type,” or trauma perpetrated consciously and intentionally, the authors define radical evil as trauma-inducing acts engaged in consciously and unapologetically. This understanding of evil helps caregivers move toward the moral, ethical, and faith dimensions of life. The book integrates victims’ experiences and those who seek to help them with a socio-cultural and theological understanding of evil, a psychological understanding of trauma, and the resources of Christian faith.

This Far By Faith
$19.00Add to cart“If your faith is the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”–Matthew 17:20
A clarion call for those who want to have God in their lives every day and not just on Sundays, This Far by Faith offers clear-sighted, friendly advice that will guide readers gently into the new millennium.
As the owners of a flourishing company called This Far by Faith Enterprises, Linnie Frank and Andria Hall have started nationwide “Circle of Seven” prayer groups, produce a newsletter called “The Mustard Seed,” and conduct lectures and seminars at their Rhode Island retreat center. Now, in This Far by Faith, Frank and Hall share the “Faith Formula” they have developed in their work together, which they use in their own lives to conquer daily obstacles.
Through Scripture, original prayers and affirmations, and plain old-fashioned “straight talk,” the authors tackle issues ranging from friendship, family, love, marriage, child-rearing, and work, all while underscoring the importance of faith and perseverance as a way of maintaining balance in today’s busy world. In chapters such as “What You Won’t Do for Love,” “Keeping the Home Fires Burning,” “A House Is Not a Home,” “Jobs, Career, and Callings,” and “Give Me That Old Time Religion,” Frank and Hall discuss ways to “live in the light.”

Even a cursory reading of the book of Proverbs reveals that it is dominated by the subject of education, or personal formation. The voice of the teacher addressing his pupils resounds from its pages. A wide array of topics is presented, and frequent exhortations challenge the learner to hear and heed the teacher’s instruction. This material, however, comes for the most part without recognizable order or sequence. Much of Proverbs consists of apparently random collections of maxims. As readers, we see many individual pieces, but the puzzle as a whole remains unclear. In this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume, Daniel J. Estes synthesizes the teachings of the first nine chapters of Proverbs into a systematic statement of the theory of education and personal formation that lies behind the text. Working from the Hebrew text and building upon an extensive analysis of exegetical works, Estes organizes his study of Proverbs 1-9 into seven categories typical of pedagogical discussion: worldview, values for education, goals for education, curriculum for education, the process of instruction, the role of the teacher and the role of the learner.
His work agrees with but also transcends the original purpose of the text by revealing the foundational theory of intellectual and moral formation embedded in this important section of Scripure. It also has valuable things to say about constructing a bibilically informed philosophy of education today.
Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.

Wisdom Of The Sadhu
$15.00Add to cartOne of the first Indian Christian teachers to receive worldwide attention in modern times, Sundar Singh (1889-1929) wandered throughout Tibet and the Indian subcontinent as a sadhu, a penniless pilgrim wearing the traditional saffron robe. Sundar Singh remains an unforgettable figure in the long tradition of religious pilgrims in India. Nearly every aspect of his life has become the stuff of legend for millions of people: his decision at age 16 to leave his wealthy home and live as a sadhu (beggar-saint), his intense bhakti (religious devotion), his miraculous experiences, his mystical encounters with Jesus, his simple yet profound parables, the peace that radiated almost tangiably from his presence.
No one who met him was unaffected. The fruits of his spiritual life. The uncompromising intesity of his message is a challenge – or scandal – to those satisfied with conventional Christianity.

Sandee has three kids, none of them are alike. One studies on the floor with papers strewn everywhere, another lies on the bed with the radio blaring, and the third sits at the dinner table with cookies in hand! It used to drive her crazy. After all, this isn’t how she was raised! But it is The Way They Learn. In this enlightening resource, Cynthia Ulrich Tobias introduces the variety of learning styles that shape the way students interpret their world.
