    $38.00

    1. Biblical Foundations For Multicultural Worship
    2. Theological Foundations For Multicultural Worship
    3. Toward Multicultural Worship Today

    Additional Info
The table can be an empowering place for building community; after all, it is at meals that families gather, reunions are held, events are celebrated, and stories are shared. To be excluded from the table often reflects the painful fracturing of a community.

Making Room at the Table explores the multicultural challenges facing the contemporary church. Using the image of the table as the central metaphor for worship, the writers strive to make worship more relevant to, and inclusive of, groups that have often been excluded – youth, ethnic minorities, and other marginalized people.

Rather than allow multiculturalism to be a dividing ground form the church today, this book seeks to bridge the gaps and unite all people in worship without threatening their personal or cultural uniqueness. Let the table be open, and let the ensuing conversation across the table transform the community.

    Additional Info
Judaism today is too often thought to represent a religious backwater, a highly particularistic religion with its own esoteric tales and traditions, practices and norms. First Christians, then Jews themselves, have succumbed to this characterization, resulting in the dismissal of Judaism’s universal religious significance. Bereft of its religious import, Judaism is increasingly thought of as merely an ethnic designation_and a quickly dissipating one at that.

Neusner pleas for vindication of “the universal character and appeal of Judaic monotheism in the mainstream of humanity.” Of the three great monotheistic religions, only Judaism has survived without political power, military might, or great numbers of adherents and has done so because its method and message aim to persuade the world of God’s dominion and the marks of God’s rule.

Theology is fracturing along tension lines once hidden by the great modern consensus that reigned from Schleiermacher’s day till our own. Now, all of it is in dispute: its starting point, its self-awareness, its claim to truth, its method and interaction with other disciplines and institutions in church, academy, and society.

Rieger offers an enlightening way to understand the chief strands or options in theology today and a valuable proposal for resituating theology around the crucial issue of inclusion. He sees four competing vectors at work in today’s Christian theology: Theology of Identity (liberal theology, represented by Schleiermacher and founded in the self), Theology of Difference (dialectical theology, represented by Barth and founded in the Wholly Other), Theology and the Postmodern (postcritical theology, represented by Lindbeck and founded on the text), and Theology and the Underside (liberation theology, represented by Gutierrez and others and founded in the interests of the other person).

Further, Rieger goes on to propose that each of these is in some way exclusionary and elitist; the mass of humanity and the globe’s most pressing problems do not invade this cathedral, and in some ways the market itself has replaced God. Religious thought can remain viable only when it is grounded in an openness that reaches beyond the global market and postmodern squabbles, critiques its own complicity in the situation, and resituates itself in express commitment to those left out of today’s “gated community.”

  • Psychological Biblical Criticism

    $22.00

This volume provides an introduction to psychological interpretations of the Hebrew Bible_with the Garden of Eden story as a test case. It approaches the text from Freudian, Jungian, and Developmental psychologies, comparing and contrasting the different methods while taking on the hermeneutical issues. Ricoeur’s work is used to establish criteria for adequate interpretation.

Genesis 3 presents a fruitful text for psychological interpretation given its importance in Western culture. Its themes of sexuality, guilt, consciousness, and alienation are issues of great concern for everyone in our society. Kille’s aim is to locate psychological criticism within the field of biblical studies and to propose a hermeneutical framework for describing and evaluating psychological approaches. The second part is devoted to analysis of different evaluations of Genesis 3 from the three chosen psychological perspectives.

  • Relational Trauma Of Incest

    $39.00

This volume presents a groundbreaking understanding of incest and an innovative, family-based approach to treatment. The authors show that while not all incestuously abused children experience the classic diagnostic symptoms of trauma, virtually all do experience “relational trauma” –disruptions in the sense of safety, security, loyalty, and trust that may block connection and communication with nonoffending family members. Systematically combining individual and family sessions, the relational treatment model focuses on strengthening the child’s protective relationships, mobilizing the family to help resolve the child’s emotional and behavioral symptoms, and building the family’s resiliency. Filled with annotated case material that illuminates the challenging treatment choices and dilemmas facing the clinician, this book offers essential guidance for anyone working with families in which incest has occurred.

Despite all of his acknowledged greatness, almost no one reads Edmund Spenser (1552-99) anymore. Roy Maynard takes the first book of the Faerie Queene, exploring the concept of Holiness with the character of the Redcross Knight, and makes Spenser accessible again. He does this not by dumbing it down, but by deftly modernizing the spelling, explaining the obscurities in clever asides, and cueing the reader towards the right response. In today’s cultural, aesthetic, and educational wars, Spenser is a mighty ally for twenty-first century Christians. Maynard proves himself a worthy mediator between Spenser’s time and ours.

    Additional Info
Scholars are agreed that the central metaphor in Jesus’ proclamation was the kingdom of God. But what did that phrase mean in the first-century Palestinian world of Jesus? Since it is a political metaphor, what did Jesus envision as the political import of his message? Since this is tied to the political economy, how was that structured in Jesus’ day? How is the violence of Jesus’ Mediterranean world addressed in the kingdom? And how does “self-denial” fit into Jesus’ agenda?

Malina tackles these questions in a very accessible way, providing a social-scientific analysis, meaning that he brings to bear explicit models and a comparative approach toward an exciting interpretation of what Jesus was up to, and how his first-century audience would have heard him.

    $14.99

A workbook for parents of school-age children (6-12) to accompany Raising Great Kids, which is a joint project of authors Henry Cloud, John Townsend and Mothers of Preschoolers International (MOPS). In Raising Great Kids, Henry Cloud and John Townsend approach parenting from the perspective of their unique theological and developmental system, and MOPS provides the hands-on application.

Most Christian approaches to character building focus on obedience to God and on moral functioning, but the authors will show how biblical character includes competent functioning in other areas such as relationship skills, responsibility and follow through, self-control, perseverance, delay of gratification, ability to lose and grieve, and the ability to forgive. Most resources for parents emphasize either structure and moral functioning over love, safety, and security or vice versa. Raising Great Kids provides a balance between these two parenting approaches.

  • Rivers Of Paradise Print On Demand Title

    $58.99

Many of the major religious traditions of the world owe their existence to the vision of ancient founders – historical figures whose charismatic personalities, authoritative teachings, and organizational genius established the enduring faiths we encounter today. The Rivers of Paradise explores the lives of five such founders of world religions, chronicling what is actually known of these fascinating men and introducing readers to the cultural and religious worlds that originally heard their messages.

Carl S. Ehrlich (York University, Toronto) introduces Moses and the development of Judaism, the numerically smallest yet historically oldest world religion. Richard S. Cohen (University of California, San Diego) discusses the life and role of Shakyamuni as the historical founder of Buddhism. Mark Csikszentmihalyi (University of Wisconsin at Madison) explores Confucius the man as well as later portrayals of Confucius the exemplar. Michael J. McClymond (Saint Louis University) examine Jesus through the lens of recent developments in the scholarly “quest for the historical Jesus.” Daniel C. Peterson (Brigham Young University) discusses the life of Muhammad, founder of Islam, the world’s newest and fastest growing religious tradition. The aim of each author is to present each of the great prophetic (personality) religions in terms of its founder, its governing principles and beliefs, and its historical development from the time of its founding up to the present day. Each of these compelling figures is viewed in light of contemporary scholarship and in comparative perspective. Indeed, The Rivers of Paradise is the only recent work to examine all five of these religious founders together.

Accented throughout with informative photographs and illustrations, these superb biographical essays, together with a concluding discussion of Max Weber’s well-known model of religious founders, provide an ideal introduction for teachers, students, and general readers alike.

    $15.00

Poetry stands at the center of Christian living. We glorify God through noticing, comparing, and naming in sometimes startling ways. Unlike the eye of science, poetry sees the deeper meanings that bind seemingly disjointed facts together. Poetry is the language of revelation, a most immediate means by which we may suspect the Mystery of the Word inhabiting our lives. The Roar on the Other Side is an invaluable introduction to the habits and skills that make a poet; more importantly, it is an introduction to the “vision” that makes a poet worth reading.

  • After Paul Left Corinth A Print On Demand Title

    $33.99

After Paul Left Corinth gathers for the first time all the relevant extant material from literary, nonliterary, and archaeological sources on what life was like in the first-century Roman colony of Corinth. Using this evidence, Bruce Winter not only opens a fascinating vista on day-to-day living in the Graeco-Roman world but, more importantly, helps us understand what happened to the Christian community after Paul left Corinth. As Winter shows, the origin of many of the problems Paul dealt with in 1 Corinthians can be traced to culturally determined responses to aspects of life in Corinth.
The significance of the role that culture played in the life of the Corinthian Christians has either been ignored or underestimated in explaining the reasons for their difficulties after Paul left. Winter first examines the extent to which Paul communicated alternative ways of behaving while he was in Corinth. Winter then explores the social changes that occurred in Corinth after Paul left. Severe grain shortages, the relocation of the Isthmian Games, the introduction of a new federal imperial cult, the withdrawal of kosher meat from the official market_all of these cultural events had a substantial impact on the life of the emerging Christian community.

Accentuated with photos of relevant archaeological artifacts, this volume provides a significant new perspective from which to read Paul’s Corinthian correspondence.

Religious pluralism is today the most challenging issue facing traditional Christianity. This constructive work by a leading voice on the subjects of religious pluralism and interfaith relations probes the Christian understanding of God and salvation and offers a new perspective on religious pluralism that affirms unique salvation in Christ while also recognizing the religious ends of other faiths.

The questions explored here are both difficult and enlightening. What is the distinctive nature of salvation? Is there a place in Christian theology for recognizing other religious ends in addition to salvation? In pursuit of meaningful answers, S. Mark Heim uses the classical doctrine of the Trinity to develop a theology that allows Christians to respect the possibility that alternative relations with God exist in other religions.

  • Real Worship : Playground Battleground Or Holy Ground (Reprinted)

    $17.00

With 50,000 copies sold, the first edition of Real Worship helped many pastors and worship leaders make biblical sense in the controversy surrounding worship and worship styles. This second edition contains new chapters on taking worship seriously, planning balanced worship, and tradition in worship. A question-and-answer section, a bibliography, and a Scripture index have also been added.

While many books deal with how to worship, they fail to give a definition of true worship. Warren Wiersbe defines what worship is and the four elements it involves: wonder, witness, warfare, and wisdom. As he discusses such controversial issues as art, liturgy, worship styles, and music, Wiersbe keeps the focus on God and demonstrates the balance of worship for which every church should strive.

Real Worship is both biblically based and autobiographical, containing personal testimony, anecdotes, and illustrations from Wiersbe’s pastoral experience.

The first edition of this book was published by Thomas Nelson in 1986.

    Additional Info
Though written thousands of years ago, the book of Deuteronomy is unmatched in its relevance for the affluent Western church of today. Moses’ words were meant to equip God’s people for living godly lives in a prosperous, pluralistic world. The cultural changes now taking place in our own social setting make the parallel between Israel and the church-and what Deuteronomy has to say-both pertinent and instructive.

This New Studies in Biblical Theology volume offers a significant study of Deuteronomy that recovers this Scripture’s vibrant message for the contemporary Christian community. Showing the major contribution that Deuteronomy makes to our understanding of the Bible as a whole, J. Gary Millar explores Deuteronomy’s ethical teaching in the light of its most important theological themes: covenant, journey, law, the nations and human nature. His perceptive analysis reveals the power with which Deuteronomy calls God’s covenant people, from ancient Israelites to modern-day Christians, to hear God’s voice and do his will.

Whether read for its critical study of Scripture or for its practical insights into living faithfully today, this book will be a valuable resource for school, church and home.

Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.

To whom does primary allegiance belong? To great human empires, or to the God whose elusive presence we can never fully grasp?

Waldemar Janzen offers a fresh approach to the book of Exodus. The liberation from Egypt is a prelude to Israel’s unique calling to model before the nations a new life of service under God.

Through the subtly prepared servant Moses, God wages a dramatic battle with Egypt’s ruler for the release of enslaved Israel. The watching Israel wavers: “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Even after Israel covenants to be God’s priestly kingdom and holy nation, Israel worships a golden calf. Once more God’s brace wrests Israel away, this time from slavery to doubts, fears, and self-centeredness. The people then focus faith on the imageless presence of God in their midst. God still wrestles for his people today.

In this updated edition of a classic text, May presents the overarching images that shape the convictions and daily practice of the physician. Instead of using the typical procedures and quandaries that are the focal points of many books on ethics, he explores how the moral power of these images aid in understanding the healer and in defining his or her tasks. In this volume May updates his reflections on the five images of the healer: parent, fighter, technician, teacher, and covenanter. This edition also contains new material on the ethics of access to health care, genetic technologies, and physician-assisted suicide.

At a time when medical professionals are questioning their own roles, May supports ethical understanding based on moral reflection. His use of these images helps shape and order experience, presenting the practitioner with imperatives by which to live. This book will challenge physicians, students, and teachers of medical ethics to reach a deeper understanding of he physician’s place in society.

Your Marriage Is A Story Only You Can Tell

Your marriage is a story. . . a tale as unique as you are. Sometimes the story is beautiful, full of “happily ever after” togetherness. Other times, the story is full of pain, sadness, or deep disappointment. The story changes as time passes. Things happen. People come and go. Everyday pressures begin to build. Unless a couple guards against it, a downward spiral of unexpressed expectations, feelings of failure, negative perceptions, and increasing self-preservation eats away at the fabric of their marriage, tempting many couples to give up – and split up.

The good news is that this “cycle of disaffection” can be broken! Read The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted and find out how to. . .
    * Recognize the four warning signs of emotional “distancing,” and how to break harmful patterns that have begun to take root,
    * Recapture the closeness you once experienced as a couple,
    * Build a “fortress for three” around your marriage, where together with God you can build a plan for the rest of your lives together.

Each chapter contains an important topic for discussion, a Bible study, and optional activities. Working together, you and your spouse can experience a newfound sense of joy, passion, and companionship – all that God intended marriage to be.

  • Calling And Character

    $23.99

One of the casualties in our culture wars over shifting definitions of ethical behavior ahs been the ability to think clearly about the relation of one’s character to the performance of one’s job. This has been especially the case in recent debates over clergy misconduct, where much has been said on what point they should do so. Yet, as William H. Willimon points out, a far more fundamental set of questions goes unasked. When, at ordination, clergy commit themselves to live an exemplary Christian life, what particular perspective and habits must they develop if this commitment is to survive the strain of a lifetime of ministry? Waht are the expectations they must have regarding the consequences of failure to live up to their commitments? Willimon lays out a clear and compelling picture of the pastorial life, one that will inform both those embarking on ordained ministry and those who have been in it for many years. He lays our specific habits such as study, collegiality, and humor as the day-to-day means of following the difficult and dangerous, yet deeply rewarding, calling of pastor.

  • Unfolding The Deuteronomistic History

    $49.00

The Deuteronomistic History is the label used by scholars for the Old Testament books of Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings, as identified by Martin Noth. Campbell and O’Brien provide the biblical text with detailed notations on how this work came together, was modified, and was passed down to us in its present form, accounting for the shifts in Israel’s and Judah’s histories, their storytelling practices, and their ideological interests.

Identifying and explaining what accounts for these literary and social processes makes this volume a major step forward for the study of this major block of biblical texts.
