  • Your Father The Devil

    $39.99

Is John’s Gospel antisemitic? In John 8:44 Jesus tells the Jews, ‘You are of your father the Devil’, a charge used throughout the centuries by antisemites to fuel hatred of the Jews. And it is no one-off statement: throughout the Gospel, ‘the Jews’ appear as Jesus’ sharpest opponents, ultimately seeking his execution. Who then are ‘the Jews’ in John’s Gospel? Defending John against the charge of antisemitism, Motyer argues that, far from demonising the Jews, the Gospel seeks to present Jesus as ‘Good News for Jews’ in a late first century setting.

Taken together, the nine prophets found in the books Obadiah through Malachi lived during a tumultuous two hundred years of Israelite history. Their communities dealt with the crisis of the impending Assyrian threat in the eighth century and the Babylonian exile in the sixth, as well as the hopeful age of restoration in the late sixth and early fifth centuries. Intimately connected to the travails and needs of their communities, these prophets had the responsibility of bringing God’s message of hope – even in the bleakest times – to their people. Their questions – Where is the God of justice and mercy? What is God up to these days? and What are we, in turn, to do? – are timely for our own church and society. William Brown offers readers a look at these important prophets and their message about where the God of justice and mercy is at work today.

In this day of dwindling church attendance and clergy burnout, a new reading of Hebrews offers an encouraging and renewed understanding of the person and work of Jesus Christ. The letter of James deals primarily with the social and practical aspects of Christianity, reminding the reader that Christian faith touches every aspect of life. One of the most useful books in the New Testament, its concerns are grounded in day-to-day questions: How do we live? How should we live? and What are the implications of Christian faith for our lives? This epistle will challenge and encourage modern readers in search of a life of integrity.

What emerges is a Jesus whose moral and religious teachings are of secondary importance to that of his life, death, and resurrection. Jesus as depicted in Mark serves as the window through which we may see God. God’s love for humankind, Hare contends, is made visible through Mark’s Jesus.

What emerges is a compelling argument that the Gospel of John has an agenda for mission in addition to concerns for discipleship and community life.

Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from the twentieth century to the first century. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. In other words, they focus on the original meaning of the passage but don’t discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable — but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps us with both halves of the interpretive task. This new and unique series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into modern context. It explains not only what the Bible means but also how it can speak powerfully today.

We also see the similarities and differences in how Christ is portrayed in these epistles as opposed to the depiction found in other New Testament writings.

  • Pentateuch As Narrative

    $34.99

Most scholars studying the first five books of the Bible either attempt to dissect it into various pre-pentateuchal documents or, at the very least, analyze Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy as separate, self-contained documents. The Pentateuch As Narrative focuses on the narrative and literary continuity of the Pentateuch as a whole. It seeks to disclose how the original Jewish readers may have viewed this multivolume work of Moses. Its central thesis is that the Pentateuch was written from the perspective of one who had lived under the Law of the Covenant established at Mount Sinai and had seen its failure to produce genuine trust in the Lord God of Israel. In this context, the Pentateuch pointed the reader forward to the hope of the New Covenant, based on divine faithfulness. Throughout the commentary Dr. Sailhamer pays close attention to and interacts with a wide range of classical and contemporary literature on the Pentateuch, written by Jews, Catholics, and Protestants.

This innovative approach, combined with commentary that discusses the text according to its rhetorical units rather than the usual verse-by-verse procedure, offers a new way of looking at Paul’s relationship with his Corinthian converts.

  • Commentary On Romans A Print On Demand Title

    $43.99

This commentary on Paul’s letter to the Romans summarizes and completes Ernst Kasemann’s lifelong study of Paul’s theology and of this epistle in particular. As is common in his writings, Kasemann in this commentary has gone his own, frequently provocative way. He has emphasized theological rather than historical questions; as a result, this commentary divides Romans into sections according to what Kasemann sees as the key theological concept of the letter – the righteousness of God. That Kasemann has, however, considered seriously the historical as well as theological questions in the extensive literature on Romans is evident in the numerous references in the text and in the bibliographies provided for the major and minor subdivisions of the sections.

This commentary has been translated from the German by Geoffrey W. Bromiley, who has translated, among other works, Kittel’s Theological Dictionary of the New Testament. Long paragraphs in the original have been divided to provide easier reading, and the references have been converted to English- translation equivalents wherever possible. In addition, this translation incorporates changes that Kasemann made in the German original for the 4th edition.
