Scripture Twisting : 20 Ways The Cults Misread The Bible
$22.99Add to cartScripture Twisting: 20 Ways the Cults Misread the Bible – How often have you encountered some bizarre doctrine only to be stunned to hear a Bible verse quoted to support it? With new religious cults springing up almost daily and old ones growing rapidly, this is more and more common. How are they seemingly able to twist Scripture to mean something orthodox Christians have never believed it to mean in 2000 years? James Sire has isolated twenty separate kinds of reading errors which are characteristically made by cultists as they interpret the Bible. He covers the full range from simple misquotation to complex argumentation which links one slightly eccentric interpretation to another, mixes in a few orthodox readings and ends with a conclusion totally foreign to the biblical world view. Sire also handles twisted trans- lation, overspecification, virtue by association, ignoring the context and others. A book to help us all become better readers of the Scriptures. Dr. James W. Sire , formerly associate professor of English at Northern Illinois University, is senior editor of InterVarsity Press and a frequent guest lecturer at colleges and universities. He is also the author of “Shirley MacLaine and the New Age Movement”, “How to Read Slowly”, and “Scripture Twisting”.

Church : Contours Of Christian Theology
$35.99Add to cartPerhaps no other doctrine has more tangible impact on Christians that their doctrine of the church. In a cultural climate where the very word church sounds a tone of dull irrelevance, the doctrine of the church has suffered studied neglect. The persistent demands to market and grow the church threaten to quench serious theological reflection on its abiding nature and mission. But few activities bear greater promise for renewing and reshaping the church than the work of theology. Edmund Clowney addresses these issues from decades of thinking and teaching. Biblical, historical, systematic and reformed, The Church is a timely reflection on the life, order and purpose of the household of God.

Genesis In Space And Time
$20.99Add to cartGenesis is a book of origins – the origin of the universe, the origin of life and the origin of man. Many today, however, view this book as a collection of myths, useful for understanding the Hebrew mind, perhaps, but certainly not a record of what really happened. Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer challenges that view and shows how the first eleven chapters of Genesis stand as a solid, space-time basis for for answering the tough questions posed by modern man.

Pilgrim People : Learning Through The Church Year
$17.95Add to cartAs a people whose faith is formed and nourished by the Bible’s stories of creation and fall, salvation and redemption, Christians hunger to order their lives by the church’s story and their own. Our journey to God leads us through the cycle of the church year?from Advent and Christmas to Easter and the season called “ordinary time”?as we tell and retell God’s story and make it the story we live by. In A Pilgrim People John Westerhoff looks at the gospel texts season by season and relates their teachings not only to Christian life and ministry but to the life cycle of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
In teaching the lessons of the church year, Westerhoff starts not with Advent but with Holy Week and Easter, which marks the birth of Christian faith and its vision of a dream come true. Commenting briefly on each of the gospel readings for each Sunday, he moves from Eastertide through Ascension and Pentecost, the season after Pentecost, Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, and Lent, offering useful themes for preaching and education. The final chapter incorporates a radical proposal for Christian education to reform the church’s organization, worship, education, and outreach.

Miniatures And Morals

Her sharp wit and sense of irony entertain, edify, and challenge both men and women alike. From theological and literary angles, Leithart unpacks both character and theme while summarizing each of Austen’s major works. For all who desire a richer appreciation of her enduring genius, Leithart offers a hearthside seat.

Openness Of God
$25.99Add to cartTHE OPENNESS of GOD presents a careful and full-orbed argument that the God known through Christ desires “responsive relationships” with his creatures. While it rejects process theology, the book asserts that such classical doctrines as God’s immutability, impassibility and foreknowledge demand reconsideration. Powers Of Darkness
$30.99Add to cartThe last two decades have witnessed a vast upsurge in occult activity. Scores of popular books have warned Christians of the dangers and urged them to do battle against these spiritual forces. Few books, however, have developed a careful biblical theology on demons, principalities and powers. Clinton Arnold seeks to fill this gap, providing an in-depth look at Paul’s letters and what they teach on the subject. For perspective, he examines first-century Greek, Roman and Jewish beliefs as well as Jesus’ teaching about magic, sorcery and divination. Arnold contends that the New Testament view is that principalities and powers are organized, personal beings which Jesus defeated at the cross and will bring into full subjection at his return. Arnold also suggests practical ways in which Christians today can contend with the forces of evil.

Company Of The Creative
$39.99Add to cartA History of Biblical Preaching from the Old Testament to the Modern Era) contends that in the modern world “casual television and junk reading dilute the content of the mind…and the interior life has become bloated with malnourishment.” In addition, he says, many Christians believe that the Bible contains all the truth they need about the world, so they do not read beyond the Bible. The author maintains, however, that “all Christians need to read broadly, deeply, and copiously.” He asserts that reading is vital to an engagement of the mind with serious issues of faith and culture. Reading, he notes, opens us to insights about issues and people; it stimulates the imagination and introduces us to beauty. In a series of insightful chapters, Larsen provides short, thematic summaries of more than 500 thought-provoking works of fiction, poetry, drama and biography that incite the imagination. He arranges the chapters according to historical period; for example, in “Identifying Our Assets from the Middle Ages,” Larsen ranges over Augustine, Jerome, Dante, Aquinas, Bernard of Clairvaux, Beowulf, Chaucer and the Arthurian legends. In each of his summaries, the author is attentive to the lessons that Christians can take from these writings. Such interpretive lenses sometimes cloud Larsen’s summaries, however. For instance, he remarks that “the actual state of Willa Cather’s spiritual life is questionable…and whether she had truly come to terms with God at her death is a matter of conjecture.” Such remarks fail to consider the power of the writing and turn readers away from the very fiction that Larsen urges them to read. While his book is an admirable attempt to recover the importance of reading for the Christian life, Larsen’s comments are often too narrow to be helpful.

Jim Cotter’s Psalms take today’s realities into account by including reference to issues of concern to us now, while retaining the poetry and beauty of the original Psalms.

Abba
$10.95Add to cart“Most Christian people often find it difficult to say their prayers in any meaningful way. Here, in these extracts from a book of devotional meditations by Evelyn Underhill, will be found clear but profound guidance on how to pray. The title of the book, Abba, is the term used in more than one place in the New Testament for addressing God as Father and it is with the ‘Our Father’ prayer that these meditations are concerned. At first sight it might be thought impossible to say anything fresh on something so familiar to all Christians as the Lord’s Prayer. Yet the inexhaustible depths of meaning to be found in it may, by the very fact of familiarity, all too easily escape notice and understanding. In these meditations those depths are explored with passionate intensity by an acknowledged expert in Christian mysticism. Both as a scholar of widely recognized academic distinction in her chosen field of story and as one of the leader conductors of retreats in her day, Evelyn Underhill (1875 – 1941) proved to have an unusual gift for combining spiritual perception of a rare order and a deep sympathy with the human situation.” –from the preface by Roger L. Roberts

These and many other images drawn from the Revelation have so seized hold of the world’s imagination that without them a good share of our best art would never have been created. THE LETTERS TO THE GALATIANS AND EPHESIANSThe Letter to the Galatians proclaims that Christianity was dependent upon nothing but God’s free gift of grace, bestowed on all who would accept that gift by faith, Gentile and Jew alike. Because it declares this universality and confutes the Judaizing Christians, the letter is one of the great theological cornerstones of Christianity, according to Dr. Barclay. The Letter to the Ephesians, “The Queen of the Epistles,” was a circular letter to the Christian churches generally. The main theme is the universal battle between good and evil, and the ultimate unity to be achieved only when all things are gathered together in Christ.
