It was a year when religious enthusiasm and postwar affluence coexisted with anxiety about global communism and an ever-present nuclear threat. McCarthyism, the advent of the hydrogen bomb, and the onset of the Korean War provoked ardent and diverse responses from religious leaders and occasioned lively debate in flourishing religious journalism.Ellwood’s 1950 is a cultural time capsule, recovering the impetus for many of today’s trends, remembering endings and beginnings, and documenting many other developments in American religious life fifty years ago. It highlights the parallels and divergences between religious culture then and now.

Proverbs Ecclesiastes And The Song Of Songs
$40.00Add to cartProverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs, though entirely different books, are similar in that they provide spiritual guidance about what it means to live wisely before God. In this thorough and readable commentary, Ellen Davis points out that the writers of these books considered wisdom and the fruits of wisdom – a well-ordered life and a peaceful mind – to be within the grasp of all those wholeheartedly desiring it.
From the confident “wise dealing” instructions in Proverbs, to the world-weariness of Ecclesiastes, to the exuberance of the Song of Songs, these books take the reader through the full range of human emotion. Their words cause one to reflect on both the ordinary and the extraordinary experiences of life: birth and death, poverty and wealth, education and work, grief and joy, human love and love of God. Though books of ancient wisdom, they continue to speak with particular power to the spiritual needs of our highly secularized age.

Describing his church planting ministry, the apostle Paul writes,“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. . .For we are God’s fellow-workers; you are God’s field, God’s building. By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no-one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
Mixing his metaphors, Paul speaks of the church in Corinth as both a field and a building. Church planters are co-workers with God, planting seeds from which churches grow and larying foundations on which they are built. God is the life source of these churches. Jesus Christ is their foundation. Other workers, like Apollos, water the seed which has been planted and build on the foundations which have been laid. The role of the church planter is to ensure that good seed has been sown and firm foundations laid.

This revisionist work – “To revise the classical Christian story in order to identify and to celebrate its ecological and cosmic promise”- mines Christian cosmology, Christology, Creation, Eucharist, so that the Christian “story” can be then rediscovered (history), reshaped (theology), reexperienced (spirituality), and reenacted (ritual).

2. The God Who Faces A Partially Open Future
3. What Difference Does It Make?
4. Questions And Objections
176 PagesAdditional Info
Perhaps no theological topic is more hotly debated within evangelical Christianity these days than God’s foreknowledge. Is the future exhaustively settled, or does it include possibilities (maybes)? In encountering such questions, a growing number of evangelicals are becoming dissatisfied with the classical view of foreknowledge and have accepted an alternative, open view of God. In God of the Possible theologian Greg Boyd offers an accessible introduction to the freewill theism position.Boyd begins by laying out and critiquing the “motif of future determinism,” which forms the basis of the classical view of foreknowledge. He goes on to explicate several scripture passages that depict the future as partially open and that God therefore knows it as such. He then discusses some practical areas in which he thinks the open view can make a positive difference. Finally, Boyd addresses the most frequently asked questions and typical objections raised against the open view. An appendix explores other passages supporting the open view of God and the future.
Exploring issues of foreknowledge, freedom, and the future, Boyd presents biblical, theological, and philosophical insights into the openness issue in this introductory, yet provocative, book. While geared particularly for a lay readership, more advanced students of theology will also benefit from his presentation.

Book Of Heaven
$37.99Add to cartDescription
In every culture, in every epoch, human beings have yearned for heaven–the kingdom of God, abode of the elect, fount of enlightenment, mirror of hopes and desires. Now, in The Book of Heaven , Carol and Philip Zaleski provide the first wide-ranging anthology of writings about heaven, drawing from scriptures, myths, epics, poems, prayers, sermons, novels, hymns and spells, to illuminate a vast spectrum of beliefs about the world beyond.The Zaleskis present a fascinating array of ancient and modern, solemn and comic meditations, as they explore such topics as the often treacherous journey to heaven, heaven’s colorful inhabitants, its topographic features, and its moral architecture. The emphasis is on great literature, with substantial excerpts taken from classic works such as The Iliad , St. Augustine’s Confessions, The Prose Edda, The Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost , and The Pilgrim’s Progress ; from sacred texts such as the Bible, the Upanishads, the Qu’ran, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and the Bhagavata Purana; and from diverse writers such as Plato, Cicero, Thomas Traherne, Henry Fielding, Emanuel Swedenborg, Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Henry Cardinal Newman, Hans Christian Andersen, William James, G. K. Chesterton, C. G. Jung, Rupert Brooke, and Arthur Conan Doyle. Selections highlight both the diversity and the universality of reflection on heaven: the sacred chants of the Buddhist Pure Land sutras reverberate alongside John Donne’s holy sonnets, and Shaker songs complement Jewish mystical hymns.
From the words of Sioux holy man Black Elk, to a sermon by Jonathan Edwards, to humorous musings by Mark Twain and fantastical passages from The Chronicles of Narnia , this rich anthology will deepen our understanding of the myriad ways in which human beings have envisioned heaven.

Next Steps In Community Ministry
$29.00Add to cartDudley and a research team go back to 24 ministries still in existence five years after the Church and Community Project’s completion. They discovered:
how the myths and expectations of funding, lay/clergy leadership, and church/society partnerships were shattered by what is doable;
how the often Herculean efforts frustrated and tired participants, who were then uplifted and sustained by making a difference;
how faith was the foundation for action, and how, through action, the poor, the homeless, and others in need became real people and not statistics.
Perhaps most important is the discovery that community ministry takes shape in ways unique to local issues of theology, church size, social location, and cultural composition. -

Soul Of The Congregation
$23.99Add to cartThomas Edward Frank points out that the dominant paradigm of many comtemporary books about church administration reflects an underlying “theology of progress,” a distilling of the gospel into self-worth, a conflation of basilea with market growth. According to Frank, good fortune and blessing are confused; praise and good feeling are identified. The paradigm of success and progress, however, fails to account adequately for the vision of the believers’ presence in the world as ecclesia. “The soul of the congregation,” argues Frank, is a way of being and being-in-the-world, and not didactic or productive.
