Caretakers Of Our Common House
$30.99Add to cartNorth American culture bombards girls and women with negative and demeaning images of their gender. It trains girls and women to “give themselves away” by overemphasizing their caring for others and underdeveloping their sense of voice and personal authority. Carol Lakey Hess asks in this book whether caring families and the church can make a difference in the outcome of our daughters’ development. Weaving together theological, psychological, and biblical sources, Hess examines how theologians of self-sacrifice thwart both the spiritual and the psychological development of women by subverting their necessary self-assertion. The importance of self-differentiation and cognitive autonomy and of caring and connection are discussed, using as illustrations biblical stories, excerpts from novels, and an in-depth look at eating disorders.

Wesley And The Quadrilateral
$27.99Add to cartSince its first appearance in the Discipline in 1972, this formulation has come to be known as the “Wesleyan Quadrilateral.” The United Methodist Church has ever since been wrestling with how best to understand, interpret, and apply the concept of the Quadrilateral. Most United Methodists think that Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience can and must be used together in some way theologically, but there is considerable disagreement among them as to how this can best be done. The authors of this volume suggest that the solution lies in a “Wesleyan reappropriation” of a Quadrilateral as “the rule of Scripture within a trilateral hermeneutic of tradition, reason, and experience.” They are convinced that Scripture is primary but argue that it cannot function in a manner that negates the other components, for Scripture cannot be read or interpreted without the meditation of tradition, reason, and experience. And they hope that this formulation, resulting from their extended conversations with each other may be the beginnings of a shared theological language with which United Methodism can face the twenty-first century.

Marius Reiser argues here that the theme of judgement lies close to the heart of Jesus’ proclamation. For Jesus, the certainty of the coming of judgement is the presupposition of the ultimate coming of the reign of God. Judgement and salvation are two sides of the same coin. This book offers a corrective to a one-sided emphasis on Jesus’ message of salvation – to say nothing of the picture of a noneschatological Jesus. This work, originally published in German, features a new introduction in which Reisner engages the current American discussion of the historical Jesus, particularly engaging Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan. Reisner goes on to offer and overview of the concept of judgement in early Jewish literature and in the preaching of John the Baptizer. He then concentrates on the teachings of Jesus, both sayings and parables. Included are excurses on important related motifs like the “divine passive” and “conversion.” Marius Reiser is Professor of New Testament at the University of Tubingen. -

Eschatology Messianism And The Dead Sea Scrolls A Print On Demand Title
$23.99Add to cartThe New Testament is of prime importance for understanding early Jewish and Christian messianism and eschatology. Yet often the New Testament presumes a background and context of belief without fully articulating it. Early Jewish and Christian messianism and eschatology, after all, did not emerge in a vacuum; they developed out of early Jewish hopes that had their roots in the Old Testament. A knowledge of early Jewish literature, and especially of the Dead Sea Scrolls from Qumran, is essential for understanding the shape of these ideas at the turn of the era.
In Eschatology, Messianism, and the Dead Sea Scrolls, Craig A. Evans and Peter W. Flint have assembled eight essays from outstanding scholars who address the issue from a variety of angles. After an introduction by the editors, successive essays deal with the Old Testament foundations of messianism; the figure of Daniel at Qumran; the Teacher of Righteousness; the expectation of the end in the Scrolls; and Jesus, Paul, and John seen in light of Qumran. These essays originated at a conference for a lay audience and retain much of the popular appeal they had when first delivered. The usefulness of the volume as a resource for students, pastors, and interested laypeople is enhanced by a select bibliography and indexes.

How Good Do We Have To Be
$18.99Add to cartFrom the author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People comes an inspiring new bestseller that puts human feelings of guilt and inadequacy in perspective – and teaches us how we can learn to accept ourselves and others even when we and they are less than perfect. How Good Do We Have to Be? is for everyone who experiences that sense of guilt and disappointment. Harold Kushner, writing with his customary generosity and wisdom, shows us how human life is too complex for anyone to live it without making mistakes, and why we need not fear the loss of God’s love when we are less than perfect. Harold Kushner begins by offering a radically new interpretation of the story of Adam and Eve, which he sees as a tale of Paradise Outgrown rather than Paradise Lost: eating from the Tree of Knowledge was not an act of disobedience, but a brave step forward toward becoming human, complete with the richness of work, sexuality and child-rearing, and a sense of our mortality.
Drawing on modern literature, psychology, theology,,and his own thirty years of experience as a congregational rabbi, Harold Kushner reveals how acceptance and forgiveness can change our relationships with the most important people in our lives and help us meet the bold and rewarding challenge of being human.

Makers Of Christian Theology In America
$49.99Add to cartThis important reference work presents critical, analytical, and interpretive essays on more than ninety figures who have been particularly important in shaping and influencing the development of Christian theology in America. The work is organized into four major sections: The Colonial Period (1607-1789); The National Period (1789-1865); The Post Civil War Period (1865-1918); and The Modern Period (1918-1970). Each section has a separate introduction by the editors tracing major theological developments in that historical period. A substantial concluding article by Martin Marty traces theological developments, trends and movements in American theology since 1965.
Each essay includes: (1) basic biographical data regarding the life, career, and major writings of the figure; (2) an analysis of the key theological issues and/or concepts to which the figure responded; (3) a critical discussion of the major theological themes developed in the course of the figure’s career; and (4) an assessment of the immediate influence of the figure’s thought and its significance for subsequent theological developments. Brief bibliographies at the end of each essay point readers to the most important and useful primary and secondary literature for each figure.
“Makers of Christian Theology is a welcome and long-needed addition to reference and textbook possibilities for courses on Religion in North America. . . . It is dramatically more inclusive and even-handed in its selection of figures for an historical orientation to theological developments in North American Christianity than any previous attempt. . . . Both the design of the book and the content of the individual essays reflect the fruit of the best current work on Christian theology in America. I recommend it highly!” –Randy L. Maddox, Professor of Religion and Philosophy

Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963
$8.99Add to cartThe year is 1963, and self-important Byron Watson is the bane of his younger brother Kenny’s existence. Constantly in trouble for one thing or another, from straightening his hair into a “conk” to lighting fires to freezing his lips to the mirror of the new family car, Byron finally pushes his family too far. Before this “official juvenile delinquent” can cut school or steal change one more time, Momma and Dad finally make good on their threat to send him to the deep south to spend the summer with his tiny, strict grandmother. Soon the whole family is packed up, ready to make the drive from Flint, Michigan, straight into one of the most chilling moments in America’s history: the burning of the Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church with four little girls inside.
Christopher Paul Curtis’s alternately hilarious and deeply moving novel, winner of the Newbery Honor and the Coretta Scott King Honor, blends the fictional account of an African American family with the factual events of the violent summer of 1963. Fourth grader Kenny is an innocent and sincere narrator; his ingenuousness lends authenticity to the story and invites readers of all ages into his world, even as it changes before his eyes. -

Prostitute In The Family Tree
$28.00Add to cartThe Bible is funny! Very funny, according to this new book from Douglas Adams. But in order to discover this humor, Adams says, readers must take Bible passages in their entirety – not just as selected lines. When looking at the Bible as a whole, readers see not just selected, moralistic passages. Instead they see biblical stories with all their rough edges – the unethical and ambiguous characters, the unsolved problems, and the surprising endings. Adams’s book shows how seeing these faults in biblical figures and events strengthens modern Christians’ faith. In addition to pointing out cleverness in the Bible. Adams offers readers various practical methods and examples of how storytelling and some simple dramatic techniques can recover the biblical humor for today’s education, worship, and preaching.

Sexual Ethics : An Evangelical Perspective
$50.00Add to cartIs our sexuality foundational and essential to our being? Grenz feels that it is, based on his understanding of the Bible. As a human, one must be either male or female. That sexual distinction must be recognized as a primary characteristic in all humanity.
But what exactly is sexuality? And how can we separate sexuality from sexual actions? The answers, according to Grenz, are more theological than simply psychological or social. He wrote Sexual Ethics: An Evangelical Perspective to clarify the theology of sexuality, and to place sexuality in its proper place in creation. He looks at several key questions, including the nature of sexuality, how marriage expresses sexuality, how singleness expresses sexuality, and how the church should view and respond to sexuality.
Sexuality manifests itself in a desire for community, and is, in and of itself, the ultimate manifestation of community, of two becoming one. Thus, the marriage relationship can be seen as the context which best describes and fulfills sexuality. Grenz deals with the issues which denigrate marriage, including adultery and divorce. He also discusses how singles can express their sexuality in a Godly way. He even touches on technological issues like abortion as birth control, and fertility advances (in vitro fertilization, cloning, etc.) And he looks at homosexuality and its relationship to true sexuality.
Grenz faces all the issues head on, and has developed a cogent, broad-based and biblical theology of sexuality. His theology will help to clarify the role that sex and sexuality should play in our lives, and will ultimately help the Church to restore a proper view of sex and sexuality in our culture.

No question, he thought, Kitty Traherne can write. Her face came back into his mind. He saw the pain in her eyes, heard the urgency in her voice, as he recalled the passion with which she had told him her reason for writing this highly controversial book. She had to risk doing whatever she could to prevent it, however the public might respond-and despite the bitter rift she was creating between herself and her family, the Camerons. She had to tell people about the horror of the last war, remind them of the awful price paid by the young men who were made to fight it.
As an editor, Craig Cavanaugh dealt with writers all the time. But something about Kitty Traherne touched him in a different way. Craig would fight to publish her book-and in the process, he hoped to get to know its lovely author….

Natural Grace : Dialogues On Creation Darkness And The Soul In Spirituality
$15.00Add to cartThe chasm between science and religion has been a source of intellectual and spiritual tension for centuries, but in these ground breaking dialogues there is a remarkable consonance between these once opposing camps. In Natural Grace, Rupert Sheldrake and Matthew Fox show that not only is the synthesis of science and spirituality possible, but it is unavoidable when one considers the extraordinary insights they have both come upon in their work. Sheldrake, who has changed the face of modern science with his revolutionary theory of morphic resonance, and Fox, whose work in creation spirituality has had a significant impact on people’s sense of spirit, balance each other with their unique yet highly complementary points of view. In these inspired dialogues a variety of ancient topics–including ritual, prayer, and the soul–are freed from the past and given new power for the future in the liberated universe Fox and Sheldrake show us.

IN THE TRENCHES
When Reggie White signed with Green Bay, he was the team’s last, best hope to bring a title back to Titletown, USA. The Packers were in dire need of some serious intimidation on the defensive line and, some would argue, a little divine intervention.Three years later, the pack was back and Reggie had led them to their 1996 Super Bowl win, making believers of everyone along the way!
For Green Bay’s Reggie White, there’s not much difference between faith, football, and everything else. Whether he’s chewing up offensive linemen on his way to his place in the Football Hall of Fame, speaking out against the racism and injustice of fire-bombings in black churches including his own, or planting ministries in the tough turf of inner cities, he invests the same intensity, the same commitment of will, energy, and focus.
In the Trenches is Reggie’s own fast-paced, inspiring account of his colorful, sometimes controversial career, both in the pros and in the pulpit. Packed with insights, observations, and war stories of his twelve years in the NFL-including his championship season-In the Trenches delves into the heart of an amazing athlete who balances an array of extremes: he is both beloved and feared, tough and gentle, competitive and compassionate, fierce and generous.
Better than a front-row seat on the 50-yard line, In the Trenches is your ticket to the sights, sounds, thoughts, and emotions that surround one of America’s most popular sports and one of its most respected stars.

Living Text Of The Gospels
$69.99Add to cartThis book represents an important new departure in New Testament textual criticism. David Parker offers, for the first time, a different way of reading the Gospels that treats seriously the fact that they first existed as manuscripts. Through an analysis of different forms of a number of key passages, he demonstrates that the Gospels cannot be properly understood as texts without taking into consideration their physical existence as manuscripts, printed books and electronic text. In conclusion, he argues that the search for an original text of the Gospels is a misunderstanding of the way in which the early church passed down its traditions.

Pastoral Letters As Composite Documents
$129.00Add to cartThe authorship of the Pastoral Letters has long been a matter of intense scholarly debate. The arguments have centered on the question of whether Paul or a gifted pseudonymist composed these letters. Dr. Miller argues against both these positions, suggesting that no single author can be held responsible for much of this material. He takes the reader on a wide-ranging tour of biblical and extra-biblical sources, examining their literary histories, and concludes that the Pastorals are composite documents based on brief, but genuine, Pauline notes, written to Timothy and Titus.

Downsizing The USA A Print On Demand Title
$31.99Add to cartIn this trenchant analysis of American society, Thomas H. Naylor and William H. Willimon take an unabashed stance against the belief that “bigger is better” and warn that size and technological complexity are not risk free. There is a grave price to be paid for our uncritical affirmation of bigness, universal solutions to problems, dehumanizing uniformity, and standardized mass production.
Naylor and Willimon argue that our government, our cities, our corporations, our schools, our churches, our military, and our social welfare system are all too big, too powerful, too intrusive, too insular, and too unresponsive to the needs of individual citizens and small local communities. They propose specific strategies for decentralizing and downsizing virtually every major institution in America, including America itself. The authors audaciously call for the peaceful dissolution of the United States through secession and provide a thoughtful game plan for achieving this controversial objective.

Genesis Of Doctrine A Print On Demand Title
$31.99Add to cartWhat is doctrine? How can a doctrinal statement made in the past have any authority in the modern period? How should doctrinal statements be evaluated and criticized? These questions are of central importance to Christian theology and have important consequences for the church. In the course of its extensive historical and theological analysis, this study presents a detailed investigation of the development of Christian doctrine and the nature of doctrine itself.
This groundbreaking study, based on the prestigious 1990 Bampton Lectures delivered at Oxford University, explores the reasons why doctrine is a necessary aspect of Christian existence and examines some of the factors that govern its development.
Alister E. McGrath begins with a critical engagement with the views of George Lindbeck on the nature of doctrine before moving on to present a fresh understanding of the nature and function of Christian doctrine within the church. Particular attention is paid to the way in which doctrine acts as a demarcator between communities of faith, allowing important insights to contemporary ecumenical debates.
McGrath also explores the critically important issue of the authority of the past in Christian theology, focusing especially on the manner in which doctrine serves as a means of maintaining continuity with the past heritage of the Christian tradition. The book represents an exploration of a “middle way” in relation to the significance of Christian doctrine, rejecting both those approaches that insist on the uncritical repetition of the doctrinal heritage of the past and those that reject the authority of past doctrinal formulations. McGrath concludes his work by considering whether doctrine has a future within the church, and he answers this question in the affirmative on the basis of a number of important theological and cultural considerations.
