Social Science Commentary On The Book Of Revelation
$32.00Add to cartThe author of Revelation presents himself as John, the astral seer, who professes faith in the Resurrected Jesus and who belonged to the house of Israel. John writes of traveling in to the sky; but this perspective of “sky-visions” is completely neglected in the traditional commentaries and studies on Revelation. Malina and Pilch demonstrate the necessity of taking ancient sky-interpretation seriously for reading the book of Revelation in its first-century context.

Joshua And The Shepherd
$15.99Add to cartJOSHUA AND THE SHEPHERD
A GENTLEMAN NAMED JOSHUA AND A SIMPLE MESSAGE THAT COULD REVOLUTIONIZE THE CHURCH…
It is the end of a bitter cold winter. A crowd of people files into a cathedral to celebrate the consecration of a new bishop-a good man, they think, strict in doctrine but capable of compassion. A man of tradition, not of reform. A ‘company man.’ His name is David Campbell.
And sitting in the last pew of the cathedral is a clean-shaven man of ordinary build, with gentle hazel eyes. His name is Joshua.
Within twenty-four hours of his first encounter with Joshua, David Campbell will propose the most far-reaching reforms in a millennium, reforms to destroy sectarian barriers, reforms to change the direction of the church, reforms to return Christianity to its founders with a simple message. With Joshua as his mentor, David Campbell-the Shepherd-preaches to Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, and Jews of the universal truth of God’s love. It is a message that changes everyone it touches. And no one who reads Joshua and the Shepherd will ever forget it.

The modern dating system is bankrupt. It does not train young people to form a relationship but rather to form a series of relationships, hardening themselves to all but the current one. Recreational dating encourages emotional attachments without convenantal fences and makes a joke of a father’s authority. The disrespect children have for their fathers in this area is an echo of the disrespect fathers have for their own office.Biblical courtship provides a wonderful freedom. It involves familial wisdom and godly protection. Grounded upon the involved authority of the father, courtship delights in its public connection to the lives of families. Sexual purity is a great inheritance for a marriage, and part of the fathers job is to guarantee to protect that heritage.
Biblical courtship is a humble affront to the sterility of modern relationships. And as a new generation rejoices in this ancient wisdom, the current waves of broken relationships will begin to recede.

Chapters Into Verse (Abridged)
$39.99Add to cartDescription
Drawing a unique map of the history of English poetry, Chapters Into Verse surveys and defines the literary legacy of the Scriptures from the fourteenth century to the present. Arranged in scriptural order from Genesis to Revelation, the book presents each poem alongside the biblical passage that inspired it. Thus readers can conveniently witness the various ways sacred text has sparked the imagination of poets throughout the ages. The editors have included poems by virtually all the prominent religious poets–among them John Donne, George Herbert, Henry Vaughan, Edward Taylor, and Gerard Manly Hopkins. Included, too, are devotional and visionary works from a wide range of vintage poets–Robert Burns, William Blake, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Christina Rossetti, Alfred Tennyson, and Robert Browning. Proving that the Bible is just as powerful a source of inspiration today as it was in the past, the collection also assembles a mixed congregation of modern and contemporary poets, such as Dylan Thomas, Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, Countee Cullen, e.e. cummings, William Butler Yeats, Laura (Riding) Jackson, A.D. Hope, Denise Levertov, and Philip Levine.Of enduring interest to readers of both scripture and literature, this anthology illuminates key passages of the Old and New Testament. In selection after selection, readers will encounter an astonishing variety of religious experiences, as a host of poets from many eras and many backgrounds respond to Holy Scripture profoundly and imaginatively. Beyond the typical ideas of worship, Middendorf explores the biblical definition and challenges the reader to move to a deeper understanding. Description
Recent years have seen a meteoric rise in the power and importance of organized religion in many parts of the world. Although violence is often perpetrated in the name of religion, history shows that religious people have played a critical role in peacemaking within numerous cultures. In the next century, will religion provide human civilization with methods of care, healing, and the creation of peaceful societies?
In this groundbreaking book, Marc Gopin attempts to integrate the study of religion with the study of conflict resolution. He argues that religion can play a critical role in constructing a global community of shared moral commitments and vision–a community that can limit conflict to its nonviolent, constructive variety. If we examine religious myths and moral traditions, Gopin argues, we can understand why and when religious people come to violence, and why and when they become staunch peacemakers. This innovative and carefully argued study also offers a broad set of recommendations for policy planners both inside and outside of government. Features

Role Of The Bishop
$18.00Add to cartThe essays in this book describe, from several perspectives, the role of the bishop in leading the church. The writers, from their global perspective, bear witness to the fact that the role of the bishop is an ever-changing one as bishops work in the world as it is. Rather than focusing on what will be an anachronistic concept of leadership, the writers hold up the evangelical principle that leadership in the church must be subject to the gospel.

“Trafton has produced a clear, understandable, insightful reading of the book of Revelation-not an easy task for a book that has left many readers puzzled and confused. One of the particular strengths of Trafton’s commentary is his close attention to the structure of John’s work and the internal connections between various passages of the book. Too many stories have been told of successful leaders who fail in their private lives and consequently neutralize their vocational achievements. Leadership expert Sam Rima believes the time has come for leaders to exercise the same skill and degree of leadership in their personal lives as they do in their organizations.Despite strong advances in organizational leadership, a key growth area is still lacking for many: self-leadership. Addressing this evident need, Rima offers practical implementation of essential leadership principles and discusses the emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual aspects of self-leadership.
Pastors, church leaders, and all Christians who serve in positions of leadership or authority will benefit from Rima’s insights. Leading from the Inside Out is also a useful tool for leadership classes, as well as church boards and denominational leaders who want to help those they oversee prevent personal failures. The book includes a study guide and a Self-Leadership Workshop at the end of each chapter.

What does it mean to confess that God is “The Father of our Lord Jesus Chrst”? The Promise of the Father begins by showing that Judaism’s claim of God as “Father” never attached an ontological gender or “masculine” essence to God. Instead of setting the standard for the conduct for human personal fathers or men in general as some argue, God’s identity as “Father” served as an example for the entire community of faith as one who promotes mercy, justice, and humility. Jesus’ address to God as “Father” thus did not introduce a new private experience of intimacy with the divine, rather, it evoked Israel’s ancient and corporate hope of God’s saving power and covenant faithfulness. Above all then, to speak of God as “Father” signifies the redemptive and life-giving work of God and then only subsequently to human experience of that work. Christians can confess God as “Father of Jesus Christ” because God was first “Father” to the people of Israel and to Israel’s Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth and to the followers of Jesus. -

Divine and Human stands apart as both a landmark in literary history and master-piece of spiritual and ethical reflection. Suppressed in turn by the tsarist and Soviet regime, the tales contained in this book have, for the most part, never been published in English until now. Emerging at last, they offer western readers fresh glimpses of novelist and philosopher Leo Tolstoy. Divine and Human consists of choice selections from The Sunday Reading Stories, the second volume in a two-part work titled The Circle of Reading. In the words of translator Peter Sekirin, “Tolstoy considered The Circle of Reading to be the major work of his life. Considering its difficult history, it is not surprising that only recently has it been rediscovered.” From its sparkling vignettes to its lengthier stories, Divine and Human probes the complexities of life and faith. Its characters range the spectrum of human emotions and qualities, from hatred to love and joy to grief; from sublime nobility to grotesque self-absorption. Tolstoy’s world, though far-removed from today’s information age, becomes our world — indeed, has always been and always will be our world. Motor cars may have replaced horse-drawn cars, but human hearts remain the same, and questions of truth, mercy, forgiveness, devotion, justice, and the nature of God knock as insistently on the doors of our lives today as they did in Tolstoy’s time. Welcome, then, to Divine and Human: a buried treasure at last unearthed, and certain to be prized by Tolstoy readers and lovers of great literature. -
Jesus The Sage
$32.00Add to cartIn the early Jesus movement, wisdom in the person of Jesus was believed to have returned to heaven, exalted to the right hand of God, and to reign from there. But Jesus as wisdom had left both his legacy and his influence behind. The sayings of Jesus recorded in the Gospels reflect not only the influence of the Israelite wisdom traditions, but also the tradition of the personification of wisdom.
In this provocative volume newly available in paperback, Ben Witherington provides both an introduction to Israel’s wisdom traditions and insight into how Jesus and his sayings fit in that tradition. Beyond this, he demonstrates the on-going significance and influence of these traditions on other New Testament writings. He concludes that Jesus may be viewed primarily as a prophetic sage emphasizing instruction, insight, and humor in a vein counter to the dominant culture.

Ecumenism Christian Origins And The Practice Of Communion
$120.00Add to cartThe theology of communion, or Koinonia, has been at the centre of the ecumenical movement for more than thirty years. It is central to the self-understanding of the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches, and has been prominent in the work of the World Council of Churches. This book, based on the 1996 Hulsean Lectures, examines the significance of Koinonia for contemporary ecumenical theology, tracing the development of contemporary understanding in critical engagement with the thoughts of Plato, Aristotle, the Hebrew Scriptures, the New Testament, the Cappadocian Fathers and Augustine. In each case, reflection on community life is related to actual communities in which texts were produced. The importance of conflict and the place of politics for the Koinonia that constitutes the Christian churches is a major theme throughout. Communion is seen as a gift to be received and a discipline to be cultivated in the continuing practice of ecumenism.

Edward Said And The Religious Effects Of Culture
$113.00Add to cartThis book provides a distinctive account of Edward Said’s critique of modern culture by highlighting the religion-secularism distinction on which it is predicated. It refers to religious and secular traditions and to tropes that extend the meaning and reference of religion and secularism in indeterminate ways. It covers Said’s heterogeneous corpus–from Joseph Conrad and the Fiction of Autobiography, his first book, to Orientalism, his most influential book, to his recent writings on the Palestinian question. The religion-secularism distinction lies behind Said’s cultural criticism, and his notion of intellectual responsibility.

The resurrection and ascension of Jesus became the beginnings of the life of the believer, who is empowered by the Spirit to go to every extreme to make known the message of God’s saving acts in Christ.

Biblical Philosophy Of History
$22.00Add to cartBy R.J. Rushdoony. For the orthodox Christian who grounds his philosophy of history on the doctrine of creation, the mainspring of history is God. Time rests on the foundation of eternity, rests on the foundation of eternity, on eternal decree of God. Time and history therefore have meaning because they were created in terms of God’s perfect and totally comprehensive plan. The humanist faces a meaningless world in which he must strive to create and establish meaning. The Christian accepts a world which is totally meaningful and in which every event moves in terms of God’s purpose; he submits to God’s meaning and finds his life therein. This is an excellent introduction to Rushdoony. Once the reader sees Rushdoony’s emphasis on God’s sovereignty over all of time and creation, he will understand his application of this presupposition in various spheres of life and thought.

Providence And Prayer
$48.99Add to cartIf God has already decided how things will turn out, what use is it to pray? On the other hand, if our freedom limits God’s ability to achieve his wishes all the time, how much could he do even if we asked for help? How much does God know about the future, and how does this factor into the way our prayers affect the outcome? And how does God’s relationship to time enter into the whole question? With such questions in mind, Terrance Tiessen presents ten views of providence and prayer and then wraps things up with his own proposal. The result is a book that puts us at the intersection between theological reflection and our life and conversation with God. It prods and sharpens our understanding, making us better theologians and better prayers.

Being Presbyterian in the Bible Belt
A Theological survival guide for youth, parents, and other confused Presbyterians.Addressing such questions as “Is the Bible the Literal Word of God or Just a Long, Boring Book? this is an easy-to-understand, slightly irreverent approach to theology and the kind of theological musings that many youth and others have today.
Being Presbyterian in the Bible Belt acknowledges that though the views expressed in questions like “Are you saved?” “Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus?” and “Are you going to heave?” are popular in this culture, those are not the only ways to understand being a Christian. Foote and Thornburg help Presbyterian young people articulate their faith and respond to these questions forma mainline point of view.
