Peace
$27.99Add to cartFirst appearing during the peace-loving 1970s, this book now receives a welcome reintroduction as part of Chalice Press’s Understanding Biblical Themes series. Brueggemann, professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary, looks at the protean concept of “shalom” and its relation to concerns today for peace and justice. The task is daunting, but Brueggemann tackles it with his characteristic penchant for conceptual clarity. He outlines a broad biblical vision for shalom (“one community embracing all creation… including all those resources and factors which make communal harmony joyous and effective”) and identifies some of its comprising factors (freedom, unity, order, justice, etc.). The second half of the book begins to work out what it means for the church and its people to be a community of shalom. One of the best sections is the new introduction, which is Brueggemann’s own insightful critique of the book (and the era in which it was written). Brueggemann seems just as at home with the New Testament as the Old, and like many seminary educators, his style slides between the pedagogical and the sermonic. Once in a while there’s a clunky cluster of theological terms, but just as often a memorable and poetic turn of phrase. This is another fine example of what Brueggemann does best: squeezing the Bible to produce hard-working theology for the church.

Short, insightful writings by respected leaders of local congregations urge church renewal through scripturally grounded preaching, teaching, pastoral care, and church administration.

Stones For Bread
$36.00Add to cartWith a proactive and engaging style, Daniel Frankforter explores the consequences of the tendency by many Protestant congregations to adopt new, ” contemporary” styles of worship. With membership and attendance declining, many churches are revamping their worship services to attract or keep participants, but too often the adaptation becomes nothing more than a Spirit-less reflection of popular culture. Stones for Bread presents some of the different programs for “marketing” worship, clarifies the implications for the integrity of a church’s mission and spiritual life, and proposes some alternative means for rejuvenating worship.

Beyond The Worship Wars
$28.00Add to cartAlmost every congregation is experiencing tension over worship. Many congregations have been participating in a renaissance of worship known as the “liturgical movement” and have reclaimed worship forms that have served the church for centuries. Yet because the church today is operating in a radically changed cultural environment, many people in our society do not understand liturgical worship and thus we must find language, music, themes, and images that speak to the unchurched, spiritually seeking person.
In Beyond the Worship Wars, Thomas G. Long discusses the nine characteristics of vital and faithful worship practiced by a wide range of “third-way” congregations-all characteristics that make for vital and faithful worship.

Reformed Worship

Additional Info
Pastors, seminarians, and worship leaders often find themselves in a quandary when it comes to worship planning. At one end of the spectrum are congregations that worship in ways that may be amusing, interesting, and entertaining but lack a sense of tradition. At the other end are congregations that go through the motions of repeating inherited patterns of worship, even when those patterns have lost their meaning or are boring or trivial. Finding ways to weave together the tradition inherited from the past and the culture of a particular community can be a difficult task. But the Reformed tradition has, from its beginning, tried to take both tradition and local culture equally seriously. Here, is discussions on the history of Christian worship; baptism; the Lord’s Supper; the Service for the Lord’s Day; music; prayer; the setting for worship; the church year; weddings, funerals, and other special occasions for worship; and worship style, Howard Rice and James Huffstrutler do what no other book does-they explain the Reformed liturgical tradition and give applications to actual settings of worship in congregational life.

Ecclesiastes : Ancient Wisdom When All Else Fails
$18.99Add to cartIVP Print On Demand Title
Recipient of a 2002 Christianity Today Award of Merit! “Meaningless!” says Ecclesiastes. “All is meaningless!” We live. We work. We die. Even with our best efforts to find lasting enjoyment and significance, we are faced with the conclusion that there is nothing new under the sun. Despite this gloomy assessment (or perhaps because of it), people have been drawn to the Middle Eastern wisdom of this enigmatic book for thousands of years. Its brutal honesty doesn’t flinch from life’s difficulties or its thorniest problems. The new translation and interpretive paraphrase provided here by T. M. Moore artfully unveils the ancient mysteries of this often puzzling book. By its very cynicism, Ecclesiastes seems to suggest that to find what is of enduring value we must embrace the hard things, not avoid them. With notes and a useful study guide, Moore skillfully shows us that the dark side will have its say. The question is, will it have the last word?

Mysticism, in the sense of a “longing for God,” has been present in all times, cultures, and religions. But Soelle believes it has never been more important than in this age of materialism and fundamentalism. The antiauthoritarian mystical element in each religion leads to a community of free spirits and resistance to the death-dealing aspects of our contemporary culture. Religion in the third millennium, Soelle argues, either will be mystical or it will be dead. Therefore, Soelle identifies strongly with the hunger of New Age searchers but laments the “religious fast food” they devour. Today, a kind of “democratized mysticism” of those without much religious background flourishes. This mystical experience is not drawn so much of the tradition as out of contemporary experiences. In that sense, each of us is a mystic, and Soelle’s work seeks to give theological depth, clarity, and direction.
This, her magnum opus, conjoins Soelle’s deep religious knowledge and wisdom with her passion for social!justice into a work destined to be a classic of religious literature.

In Who Killed Homer? acclaimed classicists Victor Davis Hanson and John Heath explain what has been sacrificed, who did it and why. Hanson and Heath argue that if we lose our knowledge of the Greeks, then we lose our understanding of who we are. Manufactured On Demand TitleIs there only one inspired Bible? The debate over the veracity of modern translations of the Bible continues to create confusion in the minds of believers who know that Scripture lies at the heart of the Christian faith. Yet many don’t understand why some believers insist that the King James Version is the only accurate translation of the Bible. “King James Only” proponents claim it is the only choice for those who want the “inspired” Scripture as their guide for faith and practice.
Pastors and church members alike need solid, sensitive answers to the ongoing questions they confront in ministry regarding the KJV. This honest examination of the “King James Only” position offers a balancred and scholarly presentation of the issues based on biblical and historical evidence. The authors, each associated with Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota, address the issues of origin, textual variant, and fallibility by drawing on the best current scholarship.

Shadows Of Things To Come
$18.99Add to cartA fascinating look at Christ’s relationship with His disciples and the activities of the early church so that we can better understand the present and predict the future.
“One of the greatest sources of prophetic vision is found by better understanding our past,” says Rick Joyner. “I studied Christ’s interaction with the apostles as well as the life of the early church to be obedient to a heavenly vision in which I was told that I would not be able to accurately foresee the future until I understood the past.” In this important book Joyner looks at the life and ministry of the apostles and of later generations so that Christians today can close the openings the enemy has used to gain entry and do his deadly work. He examines the successes and failures of Christians of the past so we can better understand how to be God’s servants today.

Beyond Retribution : A New Testament Vision For Justice Crime And Punishmen
$33.99Add to cartRecently a growing number of Christians have actively promoted the concept of “restorative justice” and attempted to develop programs for dealing with crime based on restorative principles. But is this approach truly consistent with the teaching of Scripture? To date, very little has been done to test this claim. Beyond Retribution fills a gap by plumbing the New Testament on the topics of crime, justice, and punishment.
Christopher Marshall first explores the problems involved in applying ethical teachings from the New Testament to mainstream society. He then surveys the extent to which the New Testament addresses criminal justice issues, looking in particular at the concept of the justice of God in the teachings of Paul and Jesus. He also examines the topic of punishment, reviewing the debate in social thinking over the ethics and purpose of punishment_including capital punishment_and he advocates a new concept of “restorative punishment.” The result of this engaging work is a biblically based challenge to imitate the way of Christ in dealing with both victims and offenders.

Genetic Turning Points A Print On Demand Title
$38.99Add to cart360 Pages
Additional Info
Human genetic intervention could be considered a microcosm of the larger field of bioethics. According to James Peterson, “it raises almost all the basic issues addressed in a standard bioethics course, from informed consent to the goals of medicine.” Peterson argues that it is imperative to view human genetic intervention from an ethical framework, particularly as the technology in that intervention advances at an exponential rate.Peterson’s goal in Genetic Turning Points was to tie together some of the various questions related to human genetic intervention (better known, perhaps, as genetic manipulation or genetic engineering). He begins with a look at medical technology and moves on to major issues including genetic research, genetic testing, genetic drugs, and genetic surgery (physical manipulation of human genes in the body). The issues are raised in a progressive approach. Genetic research is the foundation for genetic testing and genetic drugs, thus issues related to genetic research are looked at first, and then issues related to genetic testing and drugs. Since genetic surgery techniques are still being perfected, and are not as available as the other technologies, Peterson looks at this vital issue last.
Christians, according to LeRoy Waters, have tended to view human genetics from one of two positions (not usually both): cosmic theology and casuistic analysis. Cosmic theology simply means looking at the grand scheme of God’s plan for humanity; casuistic analysis is that which addresses the questions of practice. Peterson hopes to bring the two positions together in a cogent and effective manner. He feels that one’s understanding of God’s plan for humanity (our purpose) shapes the concrete decisions of life (the practice). Ideally, Christians should be aware of both how purpose shapes practice and how practice questions purpose. Thus, Peterson sees the medical and ethical issues as eminently practical, but defined and shaped by one’s metaphysical beliefs.
Genetic Turning Points is laid out in a progressive manner, but topics can stand on their own. Chapters are generally short and the indexes and cross-references allow one to find a particular topic quickly and easily. Since there are fifteen chapters, the book easily lends itself to undergraduate or postgraduate study (one chapter a week), but is not solely for students. It is also for professionals (doctors, clergy, etc.) and for educated lay people. Its information is timely and it

Chain Reaction : A Call To Compassionate Revolution
$18.99Add to cartDarrell Scott launches a crusade for changing the world based on the ideals of his daughter Rachel, whose martyrdom at Columbine High School is chronicled in the bestselling book Rachel’s Tears.
Rachel Scott and her killer Eric Harris both talked about starting a “chain reaction.” Eric used violence to kill and destroy at Columbine High School. But Rachel chose another path. In a personal creed she wrote one month before her death in the Columbine tragedy, she explained her conviction that if one person goes out of his or her way to show compassion, it will start a world-changing chain reaction of kindness.
For Rachel, this was a solemn calling. And now her father, Darrell Scott, is carrying on her crusade by challenging people of all ages to commit themselves to creating a revolution of compassion that can make a real difference in our troubled world. Chain Reaction spells out this challenge in compelling detail, providing moving examples of practical compassion and giving illustrations from Rachel’s life and journals.

Abolition Of Man
$17.99Add to cartIn this graceful work, C. S. Lewis reflects on society and nature and the challenges of how best to educate our children. He eloquently argues that we need as a society to underpin reading and writing with lessons on morality and in the process both educate and re-educate ourselves. In the words of Walter Hooper, “If someone were to come to me and say that, with the exception of the Bible, everyone on earth was going to be required to read one and the same book, and then ask what it should be, I would with no hesitation say The Abolition of Man. It is the most perfectly reasoned defense of Natural Law (Morality) I have ever seen, or believe to exist. If any book is able to save us from future excesses of folly and evil, it is this book.” This beautiful paperback edition is sure to attract new readers to this classic book.

Mimesis And Intertextuality In Antiquity And Christianity
$54.95Add to cartThis riveting and groundbreaking collection of essays, by a distinguished group of scholars, examines the ways in which early Christian writers practiced mimesis–the conscious imitation of literary models from the Greco-Roman world. While the study of intertextuality has deeply influenced the study of the Synoptic Gospels and other early Christian texts, few scholars of early Christian literature have enriched their observations with studies of mimesis. The apocryphal Acts of Andrew, for instance, contains extensive imitation of Homeric and Euripidean poetry, and both Luke-Acts and Mark contain extensive imitaion of the Homeric epics. These essays examine the phenomenon of mimesis and intertextuality through an in-depth examination of particular texts, ranging from the apocryphal book of Tobit to Luke-Acts and the Synoptic Gospel.

Chasing The Eastern Star
$45.00Add to cartEmphasizing meaning as “effect” rather than merely “message,” Mark Allan Powell shows how biblical texts may legitimately take on multiple meanings in a variety of contexts. The first part of the book uses examples drawn from popular literature and culture to engage in a practical way the kinds of questions that scholars bring to their study of the Bible. The second part is devoted to approaching the Gospel of Matthew as a work of literature that readers may enter–and be affected by–as they might any other kind of text. The third part is an extended study of one passage from Matthew’s Gospel, the story of the Magi, in which Powell finds an excellent opportunity to teach readers to engage in–and to challenge!–the enterprise of biblical scholarship.

Christianity And The Roman Empire
$52.95Add to cartThe rise of Christianity during the first four centuries in the common era was a pivotal development in Western history, one that profoundly influenced the later direction of world history. In Christianity and the Roman Empire, Ralph Novak interweaves these primary sources with a narrative text, and constructs a single continuous narrative account of how Rome and the early Christians inteeracted in these fascinating and critical centuries.

Thy Kingdom Come
$19.00Add to cartFirst published in 1970, this book helped spur the modern rise of postmillennialism. Revelation’s details are often perplexing, even baffling, and yet its main meaning is clear . it is a book about victory. It tells us that our faith can only result in victory. “This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4). This is why knowing Revelation is so important. It assures us of our victory and celebrates it. Genesis 3 tells us of the fall of man into sin and death. Revelation gives us man’s victory in Christ over sin and death. The vast and total victory, in time and eternity, set forth by John in Revelation is too important to bypass. This victory is celebrated in Daniel and elsewhere, in the entire Bible. We are not given a Messiah who is a loser. These eschatological texts make clear that the essential good news of the entire Bible is victory, total victory.

How To Reach Secular People
$23.99Add to cartHOW TO REACH SECULAR PEOPLE
How do you communicate the Christian faith to the growing numbers of “secular” people in the western world? Pastors and Sunday school teachers who teach the faith week by week to professing Christians experience their assignment as increasingly difficult; so how do you communicate Christianity’s meaning to people who do not darken church doors, who have no church background, who possess no traditional Christian vocabulary, who do not know what we are talking about? The question presses us with greater intensity as we realize that the countries and populations of the western world have become “mission fields” once again.
The following pages contain a mere fraction of what we will one day know about effective mission in the western world. But they contain enough insight from communicators, congregations, and converts to help 99 percent of our churches to triple the number of new Christians they help into faith and thereby become contagious movements in their communities.

Patterns Of Love (Revised)
$15.99Add to cartBook two, Patterns of Love, winner of a RITA award for best inspirational romance, features Swedish immigrant Inga Linberg. Inga isn’t like her sisters; she isn’t pretty or flirtatious, and she wouldn’t know how to attract her man if her life depended upon it. She fully expects to spend her life assisting her minister father in his pastoral duties and creating her uniquely beautiful story quilts. Inga has a good heart and is a hard worker, and she is happy to volunteer to help when a beleaguered dairy farmer, Dirk Bridger, enters her life. Dirk himself has never married, but the sudden and tragic deaths of his brother and sister-in-law compels Dirk to come back to the family farm to care for his ailing mother and two young nieces. Dirk is a man whose dreams and faith have dried uq, buried beneath disappointment after disappointment. He has longed for adventure, to travel the world and see exotic places. Instead, he is stuck in Iowa, living his brother’s life, raising his brother’s children, tending his brother’s farm. So Inga goes to work as the Bridgers’ housekeeper and soon loses her heart to a family — and to a man — whom she thinks she can never have. But when Mrs. Bridger dies, Inga’s parents insist that she return home, since it would be unacceptable for her to live in the Bridger home with no other adult than herself and Dirk present. When the household begins to fall apart — and the two girls miss Inga terribly — Dirk proposes marriage. But this, he carefully explains, is merely a marriage of convenience that will not be consummated, and the two will be able to have it annulled when the girls are old enough that Inga is no longer needed. It is clear that Dirk expects one day to escape from this — marriage — and from the farm itself. Can Inga accept this kind of arrangement with a man she loves? And if so, how will she be able to live with him without being able to express that love? Can a tall, willowy Swedish immigrant erase the bitterness in his heart and give him something new to dream about?

It is a must reading for all who are observing closely the gradual defection of many allegedly conservative churches and denominations, or who simply want a greater grasp of an orthodox, God-honoring view of the Bible.
