  • Typological Interpretation Of The Old Testament In The New A Print On Deman

    $31.99

In 1938-39 Leonhard Goppelt finished his doctoral dissertation at Erlangen entitled “Typos: Die typologische Deutung des Alten Testaments im Neuen.” The lasting value of his work was evidenced in 1969 when this dissertation was reprinted, with an appendix on “Apocalypticism and Typology in Paul.” Goppelt’s work has maintained its significance because it deals with biblical hermeneutics – the study of the methodology of biblical interpretation – a subject of renewed interest in the last few years.

In his search for a normative hermeneutics, Goppelt appeals to the New Testament’s interpretation of the Old Testament as a guide. He offers “a study of the interpretation of Scripture that is characteristic of the New Testament” in order to provide a standard guide for interpreting the Bible today. The focal question for Goppelt is how the Old Testament and Jesus Christ are related, and Goppelt’s answer to this question is found in how the New Testament interprets the Old Testament – typologically.

Goppelt begins with a brief survey of the various definitions of typology to determine how it is distinguished from allegory, with which it is often confused. After this introductory chapter, Goppelt divides his work into three parts: Typology in Late Judaism, Typology in the New Testament, and Apocalypticism and Typology in Paul. In his survey of late Judaism, Goppelt examines both Palestinian and Hellenistic Judaism to determine the place of typology in their literatures. Turning to the New Testament, Goppelt looks first at the portrayal of Jesus Christ in the Synoptic Gospels and Acts. Elements of this portrayal are Jesus as the Prophet, as the Son of David and Lord, and as the Son of Man. Goppelt finds each of these characterizations typologically related to the Old Testament. Similarly, in his next chapter on the church as portrayed in the Synoptics and Acts, Goppelt finds a number of typological relationships between the people of God in the Old Testament and the church in the New Testament.

Goppelt next examines the Pauline epistles for Paul’s use of Scripture in general and for his view of Christ and the church. Goppelt here appends brief treatments on 1 and 2 Peter and Jude. In following chapters Goppelt deals with Hebrews, the Gospel of John, and finally apocalypticism and typology in Paul. Here he also examines traditional approaches to the relationship between the Old Testament and the New, the origin and legitimacy of the typological approach, an

In this book Dr. Jukes squarely faces and effectively deals with the problem of the differences which characterize the four Gospels. Viewing these differences as what one might expect when four different eyewitnesses testify concerning an event, Andrew Jukes goes on to demonstrate that they are further accounted for by the fact that each author had a distinct and specific purpose in view in writing his account.

Each Gospel is examined, its specific purpose fully discussed and its contents ably amplified. In the process, a wealth of information is presented which is both informative and inspirational.

  • Worship Of God A Print On Demand Title

    $28.99

While most Christians today value worship and regard it as a vital part of the church’s life and witness, there is also a wistful yearning that contemporary worship be vastly improved and given a more satisfying rationale.

Calling his book a “compact guide to some of the main themes of the worship of God,” and believing that the agenda of worship “needs a serious overhaul in our churches,” well-known theologian Ralph P. Martin here reexamines the concept of worship, “recasting . . . its meaning in such a way as will express its essentially theological dimension and yet will relate its practice to the concerns, interests, and needs of men and women in our world.”

To that end, then, Martin discusses several elements of worship: praise, prayer, hymns, the offering, the creeds and confessions, the sermon, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and the role of the Holy Spirit. The main thrust of Martin’s discussion it to consider, in the light of Scripture and history, the theological rationale for the practice of each element. A final chapter summarizes the author’s definition of worship and diagrams a “service of worship” that involves all the aspects of worship he has discussed.

Both theologically adequate and pastorally helpful, the book is designed for ministers and theological students, as well as lay leaders in the churches.

  • Worship As Pastoral Care

    $28.99

Demonstrates how worship and pastoral care can be blended to sustain and enrich each other.

Using insights gained from pastoral care and pastoral psychology, William H. Willimon explores what happens to people when they become involved in Christian worship. True pastoral care, he shows, cannot take place apart from an active worshiping community of faith.

Worship as Pastoral Care sensitizes pastors to the many ways Christian worship and pastoral care methods can be blended to enrich and support one another. It encourages pastors to broaden their understanding of corporate worship and to become aware of the importance of their role as priests.

To illustrate his concepts, Dr. Willimon examines four familiar acts of worship: the funeral, the wedding, baptism, and the Lord’s Supper. The psychological dimensions are discussed and suggestions are given on ways pastors can nurture and sustain their congregations through these services.

It is very profitable to have realized what one is; but do not add to that weakness, which is inseparable from our human nature, an estrangement from the very means of strength. Only hearken inwardly to him and despise boldly that which is despicable.”

Above all, Francois Fenelon desired to love God. Out of this love came a desire to share the truth of a life lived in the light of the Cross. His individual writings document his desire to find truth through the love of his Creator; corporately, they comprise a masterpiece of a recorded spiritual journey.

The Royal Way of the Cross is written with an unblinking honesty that distinguishes it from the murky intellectualism that pervaded the time, and it is this truthfulness that gives this work its enduring appeal. Arrestingly written, The Royal Way is an exceptional account of a man who saw the hand of God in all things and was intimately acquainted with “the royal way of the Cross.”

  • Baptism

    $24.99

Baptism is a gift from God to the church. If it is not, why make such a fuss about it? We may as well abolish the practice and thus put an end to the confusion and competing notions that surround it. Baptism is God’s gift to the church, Christ’s act within the church. This is a fundamental assumption. Now we must try to make sense of such a bold assertion. Few issues within the church are as controversial as baptism. By which method should it be administered? At what age? What if one changes denominations? Laurence Stookey sifts through the confusion and rhetoric to offer this practical, biblically sound guide to baptism. He examines the sacrament from historical, theological, and pastoral perspectives, and looks at how it has been altered through the ages. Stookey also suggests possible reforms, practices that need restoring and proper occasions for the service.

    REASON TO BELIEVE
Do Christians have good answers for the really tough questions?

Dr. R. C. Sproul believes they do. In this unique book he deals with the most common objections to the truths of the Christian faith:

    – Has science disproved the existence of God?
    – Does the Bible contradict itself?
    – Why does God allow suffering?
    – Is there only one way to God?
    – Why do people need religion when life is going smoothly?
    – Do Christians have a good answer to evil and suffering?
    – How does the church explain all its hypocrites?

REASON TO BELIEVE is no collection of “pat answers with a few proof texts.” Each of the questions is dealt with in a separate chapter, which includes a special capsule summary that gives the kernel of each argument. It is an excellent resource for those in visitation and calling programs and a “must” book for those who want to do more than scratch the surface of Christian truths.

  • Contemporary Approaches To Christian Education

    $23.99

Seymour and Miller, with four other experts in the field, seek to clarify the agenda, resources, and hopes for Christian education in the twenty-first century. Gone are the days when Christian education was variously envisioned as a school, a home, an educational system, a mission agency, or a school for Christian living. These dreams revealed the conflicts Christian education was to face throughout much of the twentieth century; yet they also clarified its resources and motivated efforts on its behalf.

Modern educators such as Seymour and Miller also dream of what Christian education is and what it can become. Here they investigate five approaches through which contemporary Christian educators can develop the theory and practice of Christian education: (1) religious instruction; (2) faith community; (3) development; (4) liberation; (5) interpretation. Although they explore these five vital approaches from psychological, philosophical, exegetical, and sociological viewpoints, the authors agree that the central theme is still the teaching of the Good News. It is there we will discover that we are delivered for dependency on the old ways and that we are free to move into new ways of living.

The books of Samuel focus on the lives of three men: Samuel, Saul, and David. They are first seen as individuals rising in their respective careers. As time passes, their lives more frequently interact and become interwined with each other.

    J. Carl Laney covers these two books section by section, often pausing to clear up a difficult passage that would mean trouble to the reader. This volume is complete with many maps that prove to be an invaluable aid to the reader in helping him to plot out where the action of a particular chapter is taking place.

Dr. Laney helps the reader to understand the anguish and agony David experienced as a result of the division of his household and the rebellion of his son Absalom. We can see how Saul met his ultimate downfall as king because of his reliance upon outside sources for guidance instead of implicitly trusting in the Lord. One also sees the godly Samuel who, nevertheless, was unable to keep his own household in order.

Contemporary lessons are plentiful in these two Bible books andavailable to those who take the time to study their truths.”

Five men entered the jungle in search of a savage tribe…and never returned. In January 1956, a tragic story flooded headlines around the world. Five men, spurred by a passion to share the good news of Jesus Christ, ventured deep into the jungles of Ecuador. Their goal: to make contract with an isolated tribe whose previous response to the outside world had been to attack all strangers.

At an greed-upon time, their five young wives sat by their radios, waiting for a message that never came…

Through Gates of Splendor, the story of Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Ed McCully, Pete Fleming, and Jim Elliot, was first recorded in 1956 by Jim’s widow, Elisabeth. Decades later, its story of unconditional love and complete obedience to God still inspires new readers. This edition contains subsequent developments in the lives of the families and the Waodani tribe.

  • Be Still And Know

    $16.99

These daily devotional readings will encourage you in your Christian life throughout the year. Mrs. Stamm says, “Each day offers new opportunities. There will be new choices to make, new decisions, new avenues of service for the Lord. It may even be a day filled with heartache and pain, a day filled with unsolved problems. How different our day will be if we begin with a rejoicing spirit, knowing it has been entrusted to us by the Lord!” Begin each day with a verse of Scripture and a meditation amplifying that Bible verse in light of your innermost needs. Millie Stamm has drawn upon a lifetime of personal experience and devotional reading to build these inspirational messages. You will feel as if a good friend has come to chat and share insights that God has given her. If you feel the need for daily encouragement in the Lord, this book is for you. You will find reassurance and support as Millie Stamm brings messages such as: “Today burdens weigh heavily upon us. Often we are so pressed in on every side that it seems all strength is gone. What a relief to know that when OUR strength is exhausted, we have HIS strength available. He is an unfailing source of supply.”

George A.F. Knight’s contribution to The Daily Study Bible Series is a commentary that demonstrates the high value of Leviticus for Christians. It is written in a style that is accessible to lay people, while maintaining usefulness for advanced students as well. Knight argues that many elements of orthodox theology, such as the meaning of the atonement, the nature of the People of God, and others have their origin in Leviticus. He further asserts that a proper biblical theology is an Old Testament theology. Thus, for Knight, Leviticus is a very important book, that should no longer be ignored by the Church. The commentary is written from a moderately critical perspective, but there will be much that is useful to those from many other perspectives.

  • Testaments Of Love A Print On Demand Title

    $31.99

Using the same exacting scholarship that has characterized his other books and commentaries, Leon Morris here offers a thorough and instructive analysis of love in the Bible – a topic that he believes has been neglected and misinterpreted by most biblical scholars.

Morris is particularly concerned with eliminating the cultural and personal biases he finds in many interpretations of love in the Bible. Striving for a truly biblical interpretation, he scrupulously examines the various Hebrew and Greek forms of the word in both the Old and New Testaments, concluding that love is the basis of God’s dealing with men and that Christians ought to demonstrate more authentic biblical love within and without the Christian community.

In the Old Testament, claims Morris, God’s loving actions are very apparent, even though the word love is seldom used. He points out that even in the prophetic books God obviously loves his people despite their frequent disobedience. And in the New Testament, the definitive expression of God’s love on the cross demonstrates that “God’s love is not simply a beautiful but detached emotion – it is a love that pays a price.”

Other topics discussed by Morris include natural affection, friendship, passion, eros, and agape. Throughout the study, he refers to specific biblical passages and supplements the text with abundant footnotes that summarize and evaluate helpful additional information from scores of sources.

  • Green Letters : Principles Of Spiritual Growth

    $14.99

As the first book in a series of five on the Christian life, The Green Letters emphasizes both the doctrinal and experiential aspects of maturing in Christian living. The book is grounded in Scripture and enlivened by quotations from noted authors. “Not I, but Christ” is its theme. The author makes this arresting statement regarding the dynamics of the Christian life: “God . . . doesn’t intend to help us live the Christian life. Immaturity considers the Lord Jesus a Helper. Maturity knows Him to be life itself.” Perhaps the greatest drama in the world is the slow and subtle growth of character in the Christian. Beauty of character can be developed only through years of reflection and experience in the Word of God as the life of Christ is increasingly lived by faith. The Christian life is a healthy, robust kind of life. It advances also through trials, for in one who has faith even suffering is not wasted, but becomes a means for increasing spiritual vigor and strength.

  • Index To The Revised Bauer Arndt Gingrich Greek Lexicon

    $24.99

This revised edition of Alsop’s Index brings up to date a proven and valuable reference tool for translators, ministers, and students of New Testament Greek. The first edition was first produced by Wycliffe Bible Translators as an index to the entries in the Bauer-Arndt-Gingrich Greek Lexicon (BAG) and later published by Zondervan. Now that the second edition of BAG by Gingrich and Danker has appeared, the Index has also been completely revised and set in Greek type. Greek professors recommend the new Index because of these salient features: – Readable Greek type saves time for scholars and students. – Proficient students can double their speed in locating references in BAG. – Aids beginning students in learning to use BAG for careful exegesis. – Quickly locates the exact quadrant of the BAG page where the word and reference are treated. – English gloss gives quick reference to the general meaning of words. – Tells at a glance how BAG classifies a particular occurrence of frequently used words. – Eliminates laborious, line-by-line searching for references in BAG. – Highlights nuances of meaning for certain words by giving multiple references to BAG.

This book grew out of years of reflections on real women’s experiences. From them, Ann Ulanov states, “a common voice emerged speaking about each woman’s struggle to receive all of herself. Each was trying to find and put together different parts of herself into a whole that was personal, alive, and real to herself and to others.” This book focuses on helping women “receive themselves” by rejecting stereotypes and categories and seeking out their own individuality.

  • Theological Dictionary Of The Old Testament Volume 4

    $78.99

This multivolume work is still proving to be as fundamental to Old Testament studies as its companion set, the Kittel-Friedrich Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, has been to New Testament studies.

Beginning with ‘abh (‘ab), “father,” and continuing through the alphabet, the TDOT volumes present in-depth discussions of the key Hebrew and Aramaic words in the Old Testament. Leading scholars of various religious traditions (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish) and from many parts of the world (Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States) have been carefully selected for each article by editors Botterweck, Ringgren, and Fabry and their consultants, George W. Anderson, Henri Cazelles, David Noel Freedman, Shemaryahu Talmon, and Gerhard Wallis.

The intention of the writers is to concentrate on meaning, starting from the more general, everyday senses and building to an understanding of theologically significant concepts. To avoid artificially restricting the focus of the articles, TDOT considers under each keyword the larger groups of words that are related linguistically or semantically. The lexical work includes detailed surveys of a word’s occurrences, not only in biblical material but also in other ancient Near Eastern writings. Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Ethiopic, Ugaritic, and Northwest Semitic sources are surveyed, among others, as well as the Qumran texts and the Septuagint; and in cultures where no cognate word exists, the authors often consider cognate ideas.

TDOT’s emphasis, though, is on Hebrew terminology and on biblical usage. The contributors employ philology as well as form-critical and traditio-historical methods, with the aim of understanding the religious statements in the Old Testament. Extensive bibliographical information adds to the value of this reference work.

This English edition attempts to serve the needs of Old Testament students without the linguistic background of more advanced scholars; it does so, however, without sacrificing the needs of the latter. Ancient scripts (Hebrew, Greek, etc.) are regularly transliterated in a readable way, and meanings of foreign words are given in many cases where the meanings might be obvious to advanced scholars. Where the Hebrew text versification differs from that of English Bibles, the English verse appears in parentheses. Such features

  • Life Of Our Lord

    $23.00

Charles Dickens–perhaps the best loved of all English novelists–here, in his own unique style, brings to life the gospel account of Jesus. This–the last work of Dickens to be published–is a beautiful retelling of the familiar Bible story. Originally handwritten by Dickens for his own children this inspiring account was created in order that they might know more of the book Dickens called “the best that ever was or will be known in the world.” The work remained, at the authors request, unpublished for eighty-five years. Dickens no doubt refused to permit publication because it was such a personal communication to his own children, and he did not want his deepest religious convictions to be subjected to public discussions. After the death of Dickens youngest child in 1933, publication was permitted and the work appeared in newspaper serialization and later in book form. It is now part of the rare books collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia. This charming, nostalgic work includes illustrations of pages from the original manuscript, a portrait of Dickens children, and engravings of Biblical scenes in a style often used in family Bibles during Dickens time. Definitely a work to be cherished. The Life of Our Lord is one book certain to be read again and again.

Offering a new look at the increasingly unfashionable institution of marriage, Geoffrey Bromiley presents here a timely theological study which, unlike others books on marriage, aims exclusively to relate marriage to God as Creator, Son, and Holy Spirit. Bromiley observes that God’s work on reconciliation makes it possible for his people also to achieve reconciliation with one another, particularly in the marriage relationship.

In addition to thoroughly discussing the relationship of the Trinity to marriage, Bromiley examines such topics as incest, adultery and fornication, celibacy, the permanency of marriage, and remarriage after the death of a partner.

The fact that George MacDonald–a scholar as well as a preacher and writer–once read this fairy tale to his students instead of giving them a lecture says volumes about the man and his beliefs. It also says much about his faith in the power of stories. The Light Princess is a simple enough tale, clearly written for children–a princess at her christening is cursed by a wicked witch with lightness (she floats blissfully about the castle all day long, and gets into all sorts of adventures, as one can easily imagine)–yet it holds a powerful spiritual truth. Gravity, weight, sorrow, suffering–all of this the princess misses, but with all of these she misses love, for what is love without weight, without body? What is love without falling? She discovers this truth, of course, only at the last minute when a faithful prince loves her enough to die for her.
Sometimes it’s not a ponderous lecture–or sermon–that we need in order to experience what incarnation is about.

Dr. Herbert Henry Ehrenstein says, “I am certain that this book will take its place as one of the greatest Dr. Barnhouse wrote during his lifetime, unfolding as it does an entirely new area of biblical truth for many readers who have never before contemplated this invisible battle involving God, Satan, angels, demons, and mankind. More than 25 percent of our marriages end in the tragedy of divorce, and over 72 percent of all teen-age marriages terminate in the courtroom. An undetermined number of young people are so disillusioned with marriage that it is no longer even a desirable option for them, and for many, marriage is really nothing more than an “armed truce.” What are the reasons? Is there an answer? William McRae feels that most couples enter into marriage unprepared. Their expectations are unrealistic, their roles are undeveloped, their responsibilities are unknown, and their goals are undetermined. Because of this every couple married by Pastor McRae must be willing to participate in a premarriage study program. The material that has been developed and used over these years is essentially the content of this book.
