William C. Placher.is to be congratulated for having done what many would have considered impossible. In slightly more than 300 pages he has chronicled the whole history of Christian theology, from its background in the history of Israel to the various modes of liberation theology in the late 20th century. Moreover, he has touched almost all of the important bases and has dealt with significant figures, issues, movements in an incisive and illuminating manner. This intellectual history, a story of people and their ideas, is a delight to read. I predict it will be widely used not only in college and seminaries, but also in lay institutes and study groups. — John D. Godsey in The Christian Century

Triune God : An Essay In Postliberal Theology
$32.00Add to cartIn this original, contemporary doctrine of the Trinity, William Placher places the history of theology in dialogue with postmodern philosophy and yields a provocative postliberal interpretation. Placher deftly connects a radical view of God’s transcendence with a narrative Christology. His resulting thesis is twofold: first, the doctrine of the Trinity is not a way of explaining the inner nature of God but a way of preserving God’s mystery; and second, the Trinity should be presented by showing how Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one God–moving from the Three to the One, not the other way around. An exceptionally clear and engaging presentation of this central Christian doctrine, The Triune God both advances the scholarly and ecclesial discussion on the Trinity and provides an unusually concrete introduction to postliberal theology.

Struggling With Scripture
$18.00Add to cartChallenging the traditional meaning of Scripture is not easy, even in the face of issues that call into question those traditional interpretations. In these reflections, Brueggemann says that the Bible, as the live word of the living God, will not submit to the accounts we prefer to give of it. The Bible’s inherent, central evangelical proclamation has greater and more permanent authority than our inescapably provisional interpretations. Placher notes that taking the Bible most seriously means struggling to understand its meaning as well as affirming its truth. And Blount distinguishes what some may claim as a “last word,” which is necessarily a dead word, from the living word that is God’s word to us today.

Domestication Of Transendence
$43.00Add to cartTaking a careful look at the “classical” views (e.g., Aquinas, Calvin, Luther) and later trends beginning in the 17th century, Placher says theology has taken a wrong turn in terms of transcendence, and asks us to reconsider the nature–grace controversy in pre-modern thought.

Narratives Of A Vulnerable God
$39.00Add to cartWilliam Placher confronts challenging questions: Does a theology with a male savior inevitably contribute to the oppression of women? Does a theology with a suffering saviour valorize suffering in a way that only makes it likely to continue? Is a theology that identifies one human figure as the self-revelation of God, the unique savior, somehow intrinsically unfair to and oppressive of adherents of other religious traditions? Placher also deals with the issue of how the Christian community should function in contemporary American society and the academic world.
