Hidden History Of Coined Words
$29.95Add to cart“How do words get coined? That question is explored in Ralph Keyes’s latest book, The Hidden History of Coined Words. Based on meticulous research, Keyes has determined that successful neologisms are as likely to be created by chance as by intention. A remarkable number of new words were coined whimsically, he’s discovered, to taunt, even to prank. Knickers resulted from a hoax, big bang from an insult. Wisecracking produced software, crowdsource, and blog. More than a few neologisms weren’t even coined intentionally: they resulted from happy accidents such as typos, mistranslations, and misheard words like bigly and buttonhole, or from an unintended coinage such as Isaac Asimov’s robotics. Many of the word coiners Keyes writes about come from unlikely quarters. Neologizers (a Thomas Jefferson coinage) include not just learned scholars and literary lions but cartoonists, columnists, children’s authors, and children as well. Wimp, Keyes tells us, originated with an early 20th century book series on The Wymps, goop from a series about The Goops, and nerd from a book by Dr. Seuss. Competing claims to have coined terms like gonzo, mojo, and booty call are assessed, as is epic battles fought between new word partisans, and those who think we have enough words already. A concluding chapter offers pointers on how to coin a word of one’s own. Written in a reader-friendly manner, The Hidden History of Coined Words will appeal not just to word lovers but history buffs, trivia contesters, and anyone at all who is interested in a well-informed good read”-

Alpha Phonics A Primer For Beginning Readers 2016 Edition
$22.95Add to cartParadigm Company
This is the NEW 2016 version of the famed Alpha-Phonics by Sam Blumenfeld. The NEW ISBN is: 9780941995320. The contents of the book are IDENTICAL to the previous version. The only two differences are: The new one is perfect bound (Glued back pages for extra strength) – not comb-bound and it does not come with a CD Rom Version. The fabled Alpha-Phonics systematic phonics instruction program used by hundreds of thousands since it was introduced in the late 1970’s. Alpha-Phonics is probably the simplest, most effective and reasonably priced phonics instruction programs available anywhere.HERE IS WHY IT WORKS SO WELL: IT IS SIMPLE!! There are only 44 phonograms (Sounds) the child needs to learn. Reading, contrary to what you have been told, is easy to teach because all you have to do is teach the student to SOUND OUT the words they need to read. At first they sound the words out aloud, later they do it in their head silently. That is ALL there is to teaching reading. MOM get this: All 128 Lessons in Alpha-Phonics are covered in ONLY 14 pages of instructions for you. Students begin with short vowels putting together simple words (Like a with m = am or a with s = as) and progress to the more advanced words. With Alpha-Phonics the beginner can be reading simple sentences by lesson three, and that can even be on the first day! Other reading instruction programs try to do too much. They inject grammar, pictures and other material, needlessly complicating the task.
Alpha-Phonics just teaches reading only. Alpha-Phonics has as a BONUS: you teach SPELLING easily as you go (through simple dictation). Alpha-Phonics easily introduces over 3,500 words in its simple 128 lessons. Some can learn to read in only months. Alpha-Phonics also works very well for older students, even grown adults who need remediation. Is there a negative about Alpha-Phonics? Yes. In the past 30 years we have heard only one criticism (Only a few times). It is: Some Moms say they think their child can become bored when taught by Alpha-Phonics. Why? Parents have been convinced that learning has to be a fun time. They believe games, card decks, cartoons/pictures, spin the needle tricks, etc. make it fun. They feel they have to entertain their kids while teaching. But, this unnecessarily slows down the process. With Alpha-Phonics the student can actually be READING simple sentences even day ONE! Students do see lists of words in Alpha-Phonics lessons, but they QUICKLY are ac

Idioms Activity Book
$12.99Add to cartHere’s another of those important parts of speech that, for many of us, is hard to define. Once your students have studied the 20 memorable idioms in this book, they will remember that, while “a picture is worth a thousand words,” a well-placed idiom can accomplish almost the same task in a thoughtfully crafted sentence.
Reading comprehension and fluency are enhanced when children know the parts of speech. Our Idioms book is loaded with activities and ideas designed to add FUN into learning. Each page is divided into five sections — “Create a blueprint!” (Draw it!), “Plug it in!” (Think about it!), “Build a book!” (Create it!), “Saw through it!” (Read it!), “In the spotlight!” (Highlight it!), and “Set it in concrete” (Write it!). This unit is complete with a review test, extension ideas, reproducible pictures to supplement the lessons and a blank template for creating your own activity sheets. One of nine titles in our top-selling Reading FUNdamentals book and chart set series. 48 reproducible activity pages.
